TOGETHER IN SPIRIT:

Boston Pops for Nantucket on Saturday by Catherine Macallister When Nantucket Cottage Hospital opened the doors of its brand new hospital in February of 2019, it was clear that the new building would support greater access to healthcare for Nantucket year-round residents, summer residents, and visitors. What they did not expect are the challenges that a global pandemic would bring just over a year later. Covid-19 has brought many obstacles to Nantucket and the world, but Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s response and careful planning have helped our island community navigate these uncharted waters and come together in support of one another. Jason Graziadei, Public Information Officer at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, has become a go-to source for information and connections to the community. This has been “a major adjustment for everyone…responding to the challenge of the pandemic,” says Graziadei, and “everyone has been touched in some way.” Around 5 pm every day, the nantuckethospital.org is update with daily COVID-19 testing results. As of our press date, Nantucket has had 41 confirmed cases of Covid-19 out of 4,202 tests. The number of infections may seem low, but does not mean that we should relax our vigilance. A mass effort by Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Town of Nantucket, Board of Health, and the community has resulted in businesses operating under strict guidelines and with special protocols. The island now has greater availability of testing. The hospital is currently operating under strict precautions and protocols to ensure that patients and staff are safe, and are constantly adjusting to ensure that proper restrictions are followed. Throughout the pandemic, hospital staff has approached the day-to-day

Sharing Talented Artists and a Passion for Art

Kathleen Knight has a talent for finding talent, and she loves sharing her discoveries at her gallery in the heart of downtown Nantucket. A walk up the steps at 4 India Street brings you into a world of exquisite glass sculptures and a collection of traditional and contemporary art like nothing else anywhere on our island. Starting this Friday, August 7, The Gallery at Four India is hosting internationally acclaimed painter Giovanni DeCunto in an exhibition simply called America. Knight was the first to exhibit DeCunto on Nantucket Island thirty years ago: “I first met Giovanni in 1990, and I fell in love with his work...it was inspiring, ahead of the times...” She hosted two solo shows for him in her gallery: one show on the American Flag and the second exhibiting his nautical flags in a pop style that no one else was painting at the time. “Today there are many artists painting the flag, but none as brilliant and powerful as Giovanni,” Kathleen commented. Last winter she decided to call to see where his career had taken him and was excited to find out he was at the top of his field. “I was thrilled to hear the news, as I have over the years launched the careers of many up-coming innovative artists, such as Steampunk artist Bruce Rosenbaum and Upcycler Thomas Deininger. Bringing back Giovanni has been what makes this business so worth working hard for!” Giovanni said he was very happy to hear from Kathleen: “I’m really excited, it’s been a long time since I’ve exhibited there. Hopefully, it will be part of my new routine.” He went on to describe himself as a “Global Expressionist” with a style that is from the Baroque Period influenced by Impressionists, culture, and humanity—a style the bridges the gap between the old and the new: “I threw away all my tools and paint directly onto the canvas to make my images... by eliminatcontinued on page 16

NHA Opens Inspiring New Exhibit

A new exhibit in the Nantucket Whaling Museum tells the story of inspiring individuals who moved Nantucket—and the nation—towards a more just and equitable distribution of political power. It begins with a simple will written in 1710 that endowed a formerly enslaved man with property and continues to the enactment of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920 that granted voting rights to women. The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is excited to present The Road from Abolition to Suffrage, a new exhibition in the Williams Forsyth Gallery of the Museum on Broad Street. As the title suggests, the story has two parts—the first looks at the scourge of slavery and the second highlights those individuals with Nantucket connection involved in fighting for civil rights for women. Curiously, the pursuit on whales mirrors the former, while the latter reflects Nantucket’s post-whaling period. Early on, the virtue of tolerance, so prized in the Quaker community, paved the road for a multitude of ethnicities to engage in the pursuit of whaling. With the decline of the Wampanoag population, African Americans, Pacific Islanders, Azoreans, and Cape Verdeans stepped into those roles. The Underground Railroad had a stop here as escaped slaves benefited from the social distancing of long whaling voyages. The passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments ended slavery and gave Black men the right to vote. Women would wait another five decades. In the island’s post-whaling economy, women and men pressed for the full embodiment of that foundational phrase in the Declaration of Independence: “All Men Are Created Equal.” Finally it came in 1920, 72 years after the Declaration of Sentiments were adopted at the first Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. Nantucketers today can feel a special pride for those islanders who advocated for civil rights. This new exhibit tells their stories. The exhibition is open to the public during Whaling Museum hours; NHA members can sign up for member mornings and evenings at nha.org.

Serenella has been a part of the downtown Nantucket shopping experience since 2010, has helped shape the fashion scene on our island, offering a customer-centric shopping experience, guaranteed to excite the most discerning shoppers. Owner and curator for the store, Leslee Shupe, took ownership of Serenella in Boston in 2003, just after graduating college. She knew that Nantucket would be her “first choice for a second destination location. She opened Serenella of Nantucket in 2010 and has continued to grow the business, opening their Palm Beach location in 2017, and a second specialty collaboration, La Double J X Serenella, on Nantucket this season. Shupe’s careful eye sets her apart: “I am forever researching and sourcing the ‘best of the best’ for our sophisticated, educated, and discerning clientele, says Shupe. Shupe has taken to the runways in places like Milan, Paris, and New York, carefully choosing which pieces to include in her Nantucket, Boston, and Palm Beach locations. Turning an Island Museum Inside Out

The Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum has found an innovative way of sharing their exhibits during the global pandemic: they are turning their museum inside out! Instead of welcoming the public inside this year, they are encouraging visitors to come to the museum’s grounds at 158 Polpis Road, to enjoy the gorgeous scenery and see the outdoor exhibits express what would be found inside the museum. Museum staff has created twelve full-color storyboards and placed them around the property, and they include details about how the museum came to be, the formation of the United States Coast Guard, and several shipwrecks from the 19th and 20th centuries, including the wrecks and rescues of the HP Kirkham, the British Queen, and the 1956 sinking of the Andrea Doria. Also placed around the grounds are several socially-distanced tables, chairs, and benches throughout the grounds for all to enjoy. The museum is inviting islanders and visitors to pack a picnic lunch or dinner and take in the tranquil splendor of the adjacent Folger’s Marsh. Bird lovers will be fascinated by the many species seen in the area including ducks, egrets, swans, seagulls, saltmarsh sparrows, and more. Post a photo of yourself at the museum and tag Egan Maritime or the Shipwreck

Museum on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and you’ll be entered to win fun items from the museum's gift shop. This is not the only pandemic pivot made by staff at the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum. Visitors can enjoy a virtual museum experience at eganmaritime.org. And since early April, Egan Maritime Institute’s Maritime Studies Instructor Evan Schwanfelder has been hosting free podcasts that tell the dramatic stories of wrecks and rescues that the museum is famous for telling. To listen to the Time & Tide podcasts, visit timeandtidenantucket.com The museum is located only 4 miles outside of town and there is plenty of free parking, and it’s directly across from the Polpis bike path. The property is open only during daylight hours, and there are no bathroom facilities. Facial coverings are encouraged while walking around the property. Founded in 1989 to preserve and celebrate our island’s seafaring heritage, Egan Maritime Institute offers many programs and educational opportunities to inspire the appreciation and preservation of Nantucket's maritime culture and seafaring legacy. Financial support is greatly appreciated: if you’d like to donate or become a member, visit eganmaritime.org.

Pairings for 2020 Dining by Jenny Benzie, Advanced Sommelier of Épernay The current dining scene on Nantucket is like none we have ever seen before. One could have only dreamed of eating al fresco, under the beautiful stars that Maria Mitchell once gazed upon many moons ago. For those who are still a little skeptical about being in socially distanced proximity to others while dining, the good news is that the restaurant community on Nantucket has options for all of your favorite meals that can easily be packed for curbside pick-up for you to enjoy at home or elsewhere.

BRUNCH, PLEASE

Why wait in line for a table at Black-Eyed Susan’s when you can have your brunch on the go? While you can’t go wrong by selecting any of Black-Eyed’s best brunch menu items, you would be remiss if you failed to order their delicious Pennsylvania Dutch Cakes with Jarlsberg Cheese. It’s brunch, right? That means it is totally acceptable to have dessert before noon. This is a great menu item to share, if you are into sharing in these different times – or you have an excuse to eat it all yourself if you “aren’t comfortable sharing” at the moment. This unique stack of cakes is their house pancake specialty, slathered with syrup blended with sweet butter. You can do even better by adding real maple syrup, or make it the best with berries on top. There is much to celebrate here, so let’s add a bottle of sparkling wine to the equation. Naveran Dama Cava is a gorgeous sparkling wine from Spain, made just like Champagne, where the second fermentation that creates the bubbles occurs in the bottle. However, this “grande dame” from the Iberian Peninsula is a fraction of the price of its counterpart from France. It is a blend of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Parellada, an indigenous Spanish grape varietal, all from organically grown vines. This is also considered a vegan wine. Perfect to accompany your brunch, or versatile enough for almost any meal!

Shouting Down the Status Quo

August 6-12, 2020

by Robert P. Barsanti The moon surprised us. The marginal fog had simmered away until the beach settled clear and blue. We were lolling in our chairs on the south shore before an insistent, distant, and muttering surf. All around us, pink skin stretched over towels, under umbrellas, and in front of phones. During the week, a longshore current had scooped and sculpted a steep beach. Waist- and shoulder-high waves broke right on shore, scooted up the wall, then raced back into the teeth of the net wave. It made for a dramatic show, when you looked away from your book or phone. Then, without announcement, the tide began poking up over the wall. The water demonstrated what it could do, if it were deeper than a quarter inch. The ocean came scooting under the beach chairs, dampening feet, and warning of the moon. Then the ocean became demanding. It marched up and over the edge, swept clothes, shoes, and towels out in front of the wave. A nearby family, complete with newborn, found all of their gear lifted, pushed up beach, and then swept back into the water. They recovered it all, (including the baby) but retreated back into the safety of their Yukon. The water, however, stopped retreating. Instead it smoothed away the footsteps and pooled up in long, shallow ponds that kept rising. Up the beach, squeals exploded when a bigger wave pushed up over the wall, over the towels, over the purses and backpacks, and lifted the coolers. The bikinis and the jams leaped up out of their dramas, rescued what they could, retreated, and cast a hairy eye on the ocean. Tonight, they would be praying to continued on page 35

A Closer Look at Ticks on Nantucket by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation

Ticks are as part of life on Nantucket as fog, summer traffic, and sand. That's not a statement meant to scare people away. It's a fact of life. Taking preventative and proactive measures will help ensure the health of you, your family, and your pets. First, it is important to know what we have on-island and what the potential dangers, if any, actually are. Deer Ticks Blacklegged ticks (a.k.a Deer ticks) take 2 years to complete their life cycle and are found predominantly in woody, shrubby habitats. Research has shown that they prefer the humidity of understory shrubs. Their numbers rely greatly on the distribution of its reproductive host: white-tailed deer. Both nymph and adult stages transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Babesiosis, and Anaplasmosis. On Nantucket, this is our most common tick. Dog Ticks American Dog ticks are found predominantly in areas with little or no tree cover, such as grassy fields, as well as along walkways and trails. These used to be more prevalent on the island, but are less-frequently encountered now. They feed on a variety of hosts ranging in size from mice to deer, and nymphs and adults can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia, though these are less commonly encountered than other tick-borne diseases. Lone Star Ticks This tick species is a more recent find in our region. Prevalent in the southeastern US, their distribution has been expanding with global climate change. Previously only known from a few areas of Massachusetts, lone star ticks (LST) now have confirmed breeding populations in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Lone star ticks are known to be more aggressive than the deer and dog ticks. They actively “hunt” down a host instead of passively hoping one walks by. Lone star ticks, fortunately, don’t transmit Lyme’s, but they have their own unique set of diseases: they carry tularemia, human ehrlichiosis, and STARI (southern tick associated rash illness). The most sensational headline that gets repeated, with a hint of truth, is that the LST bite can make you allergic to red meat (anywhere from hives to anaphylactic shock). The good news, however, is that LST’s are less likely to carry pathogens than deer ticks. Lymes, Babesiosis, and Ehrlichiosis Lyme disease is caused by an infection with a spirochete (a type of bacteria) which can be transmitted to people by bites from nymphal and adult black-legged ticks. Many of the symptoms of early Lyme’s mimic flu-like symptoms. Other tick-borne diseases passed on through ticks include human Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis. Symptoms are similar for all three infections, and you can have co-infections, but treatments differ for each disease. When going to the doctor with a tick bite, confirm that you are tested for all possible tick-borne diseases. It's important to be treated early if you test positive to prevent later, more serious problems. Powassan Virus This tick-borne illness has been in the news lately despite its rarity. Approximately 100 cases of Powassan virus disease were reported in the United States over the past 10 years and there were only 16 reported cases in Massachusetts. Unlike Lyme and other tick-borne bacterial infections, Powassan is a virus for which there is no treatment except supportive care. It is spread via the blacklegged tick. No cases of this disease have ever been reported on Nantucket. For a great online resource that can answer most of your tick questions and will even go the extra mile, check out the Tick Encounter Resource Center at tickencounter.org, out of the University of Rhode Island. It offers a plethora of regional tick information based in science and with important information from the CDC. Not only is it a great source of information, but you can participate!

Have a tick? Take a photo and send it in. The information they gather through volunteer participation allows TERC to create maps of infestations and calculate a Tick Encounter Index. Several friends have remarked recently about finding nymphs on themselves after a walk. Young ticks, or nymphs, are most active in the warm weather months which is why we're seeing them more now. Adult ticks are most active during the fall and spring, but can also be seen at other times of the year. Nymphs are difficult to identify at this stage, but best to avoid them altogether. After a recent day “in the field,” I found my shins covered with 10-20 tiny nymphs. I thought it was mud splatter until I realised it was bumpy. I must have walked by a hatch. The nymphs are easy to pick off and can even be removed with a lint roller or duct tape. So you found a tick on you. Now what? 1. Take it off. If it wasn't biting you, pick it off and throw it in the toilet. Putting it between two pieces of tape and tossing in the garbage also works. Just don't flick it back into your surroundings, especially if you're inside. One less tick is still one less tick! 2. If it is attached, try to remove it completely. This means you want the head out. If it only bit recently, it should be easy to do. Tweezers work well, but you can pick up any number of tick removal tools at pharmacies around the island. 3. If you know the tick was only attached for 24 hours or less, treat the spot like a mosquito bite and go about your day. If you're worried it may have been attached longer, check in with your doctor or the clinic at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Caught early and treated, you may never experience any symptoms. The Nantucket Cottage Hospital has good information about tick disease treatment and prevention at nantuckethospital.org/health-wellness-services/tickborne-disease. If you happen to have the tick that bit you, don't bother bringing it to the hospital, you can, however, send it in to be tested. TERC now partners with the UMASS Laboratory of Medical Zoology and their tickreport.com to offer tick testing. You can contribute to science and send the tick in for testing yourself. Not only will you get a report of what pathogens the tick may have been carrying, but you are contributing to important research. Tick Report was born from the mind of Dr. Steven Rich. As a microbiologist studying pathogens and tick-borne diseases, he heard from people who are truly concerned about the “tick epidemic” in their areas. Tapping in to the concerns of citizens allows Dr. Rich’s lab to collect a multitude of data while providing a service to interested people. After I found a lone star tick on me in 2015, I called Dr. Rich and sent in my tick. The results came back in a few days and all was well. My tick was negative for every possible disease. Phew! On Nantucket, multiple researchers are studying all aspects of ticks; tick biology, species and populations, tick-borne diseases, how to reduce the populations, and reduce disease transmissions. There may be some overlap, but, as with all scientific research, studies build upon each other. We all benefit when there are more researchers studying these issues. Prevention is the best treatment: • Avoid known tick habitats: brushy and moist areas (try to stay on the path) • Tuck your pants inside your socks • Use repellant. There are many options for sprays or inoculated clothing. • Regularly check yourself and your family for ticks. Pay close attention to armpits, groin, and back. • Treat your pets with medications or tick collars to repel ticks. • Support tick research where possible. The more we know, the better prepared we can be. Don't forget to enjoy Nantucket! With some preventative measures and a good tick check at the end of the day, you can still enjoy the wonderful nature Nantucket has to offer.

Sharing Talented Artists and a Passion for Art from page 4 ing the tools, I can give equal time on the canvas and keep the experience of painting pure to itself... be true to painting but bring it into this age, bring together the past, present, and future. It’s all about communication: paintings must have relevance to today to remain in the future.” DeCunto also describes himself as “an American artist and a patriot,” and his paintings of the American flag are full of heart and uniquely inspiring. His work, created in an inimitable style that is gracefully poetic and visceral, mindful and intense, can be found in museums and private collections around the world. In 2016, he was awarded the key to the city of Lawrence, MA, where he was raised—an honor given only to two others: Robert Frost and Leonard Bernstein. Not only is Kathleen Knight bringing Giovanni DeCunto back to her gallery on Nantucket, but she also spearheaded a charity auction and artists reception to benefit the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. “The fundraiser was my suggestion,” she explained, “to give back and support the children of the future and Nantucket's pride. It brings me joy when young artists visit the gallery and tell me about their artwork and what they love in the gallery. “What excites me about his return to our island

is to give artists who dream of having a successful career the opportunity to meet and speak to Giovanni, who has worked very hard to get where he is today. [To show them] there is a bigger world out there, to take the chance and paint outside the box and to never give up! I believe artists need patrons who listen and go beyond to help them establish themselves on- and off-island. Specializing in contemporary and traditional fine art, Knight has dedicated her life to supporting artists and sharing their work. Her exhibition space presents a wide variety of dozens of artists from the USA and Europe. Her contemporary art glass collection is our island’s only source for stunning sculptures in crystal and glass. “My goal has always to bring new and exciting exhibits to Nantucket...to broaden the minds of artists, collectors, and our museum. The world of art is my life, and I wouldn't change one minute of my 45-year career of representing passionate, dedicated artists. Those who go beyond the same painting over and over. Those who push the struggle to finding their voice. It's a very rewarding accomplishment to see artists become real!” Giovanni DeCunto’s exhibit America will be on display in The Gallery at Four India through August. The Artists Reception and Charity Auction is held this Saturday, August 8, from 4:30 to 7 pm at 21 Broad Street. opeations in new and inspiring ways. Many departments have adjusted their daily schedules, and the Emergency Department, the Med-Surg unit, and the Birthing Center continued to provide 24/7 care to patients. Departments like the Infusion Center have also remained essential to the hospital, operating throughout the pandemic to ensure that patients could receive their regular and essential care. There has been “a lot of teamwork, a lot of collaboration, and a lot of learning,” explained Graziadei. Graziadei also commends the Environmental Services Department, who have altered their schedules to ensure NCH nurse anesthetist John Hanlon plays the hospital piano constant and appropriate cleaning of the hospital, “they are so important to what we do.” Every department within the hospital has truly risen to the challenge of the pandemic and come together to continue offering high-quality care to the island community. As part of the direct response to Covid-19 illnesses on the island, the hospital has divided and designated a “hot zone” in the Emergency Department. This separate area allows for positive or “under investigation” cases to be appropriately treated separately from other emergency room treatments. Additionally, the Physician Clinics at the hospital came together and created a drive- through testing site that continues to be available on a daily basis. The entire operation has been “beefed up,” says Graziadei, offering services beyond just Covid-19 testing, so that patients who may be experiencing symptoms similar to the virus, can be evaluated before entering the hospital in a separate and safe outdoor area. “The completed rebuild of NCH has allowed staff to “better respond to changes, operationally,” says Graziadei, commenting on the main entrance turned to drive through site that was built as though it was “made for drive-through service.” Though it is hard to believe that so many months have passed since this virus became a global pandemic, NCH has been transparent and moved towards a “major communication effort…from the beginning,” says Graziadei. There was a “demand for information from the community,” he says, discussing the hospital’s efforts to reach community members. Through targeted efforts, NCH has partnered with the Town and Board of Health to ensure constant and effective communication with residents and visitors. Using social media and the hospital website, Graziadei has been gathering information and sending it out in multiple languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Bulgarian. There is also a continued effort towards contact tracing, led by Elizabeth Harris, an RN and Infection Prevention Manager at the hospital. All efforts by the hospital come down to the community’s continuous support of island initiatives like wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and staying home if you feel sick. “No one likes wearing a mask,” says Graziadei, “but it’s an important thing to do.” Across Nantucket, many have “really listened and understood.” As Nantucket Cottage Hospital looks towards the future, they know they have the continued support of the island. “The community has been incredibly responsive,” says Graziadei, “and we are very grateful for everything.” From the beginning, support has been coming in the shape of supplies, donations, and meals for healthcare workers: truly a community effort. The hope is that people will continue to donate to or volunteer at the hospital, as the hospital remains a continued on page 21

year-round operation. With so many necessary changes involved with the onset of the pandemic and a loss of income over winter and spring from the lack of nonessential operations, there is still a lot of work to be done for the hospital and ways to give back. Boston Pops on Nantucket, the hospital’s annual fundraiser, will still be held this Saturday, August 8, but instead of a live concert on the beach with fireworks, it will be broadcast as a virtual event. The hope is that this Boston Pops for Nantucket will “engage everyone” and “still support the hospital,” says Graziadei. A team of anonymous donors has created a 1:1 match for donations made between now and August 8, which will double every donation to Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Now is the time to show your appreciation by continued financial support. A donation equal to the cost of a Pops ticket—just $30—becomes $60 if you give by August 8 at nantuckethospital.org/ways-to-get-involved/events/boston-pops The event will be focused on the community members who have been “keeping the gears running” on Nantucket: essential workers, hospital staff, first responders, and grocery workers, to name a few. This non-traditional experience will be a combination of Pops music and some original features. While we may not be able to sit side-by-side on the beach, we will still be able to support our island’s hospital and give back to some of the essential workers who have continued caring for us all. Tune in at 7 pm to the local radio station 97.7, or watch on the Nantucket Community Television station showing on Comcast channel 18 and streamed at their website nantucketcommunitytelevision.org. At 7:45 pm, step outside and clap for the carers loud enough for America to hear! Even with the summer season underway here, our island community has done “really well” says Graziadei, commenting on how “a lot of people have really risen to the occasion,” of navigating the pandemic. The efforts to continue education, outreach and awareness will continue throughout the summer, and it’s important to remember the health care workers, essential workers, and NCH staff who remain vigilant against this global pandemic. As you venture downtown, to beaches, and across the island, please make sure that you continue to follow the mandates of the Town and Board of Health by wearing masks in designated areas, practicing social distancing, and frequently washing your hands. CAN’T BE BEET The small, local restaurant joints are always the hidden gems when it comes to finding value in neighborhood eateries. Sometimes they might not be easy to see, even when they are there right before your eyes. The Beet Nantucket, while known for their amazing salads and healthy food for breakfast and lunch, also serves a beetutiful dinner. You have the option to dine inside or in their quiet sidewalk nook tucked on the left side of the building, where you won’t have foot traffic parading through your repast. Riesling from Wirz Vineyard in Cienega Valley. First of all, don’t get your nose in a twist about Riesling. This is the most versatile wine grape in regard to pairing it with food due to the amount of acidity in the wine. This is what makes your meal go from wow to POW. Also, this is a wine made by a Master of Wine, so he must know what he is doing. This dry wine is full of character, with lime, white flowers, and bright saline notes to pair with all three of the dishes mentioned above. It comes from a single old-vine vineyard in the Central Coast of California. If there is a year to do things differently and start drinking Riesling, this would be the year. Wherever your dining experiences may take you on Nantucket these days, please remember to be courteous and kind to those who are being of service to you. We are all in this together and enjoy being part of what could possibly become a new outdoor dining tradition on our fair isle. Cheers!

Leave only footprints... Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Where to Take Your Take-Out

There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. There are still limitations under current guidance, and statewide and local face-covering orders remain in effect. For up-to-date details, visit nantucket.net/COVID-19-FAQ.php

Around Town You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most in-town streets. There are a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.

The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.

Shouting Down the Status Quo from page 11

the gods of rice. Eventually, the tide pushed us all back to the dunes. The tidal lake had become more permanent with each successive wave. The tide then formed a channel and sucked all of that water back out to sea, along with sandals, some shirts, and the white lifeguard storage locker. We all agreed that we had never seen that before. We had seen an angry ocean, of course. And we had seen high tide, but not like this on the south shore. Some thought it could be an incoming tropical storm, others thought global warning. Eventually, the truth emerged. The Sturgeon Moon, faded in the electric August sky, had ambushed us. Fifty years of living by the ocean, and I still get surprised by the tide. Driving back to town, we had to slow for the new stop signs—and other signs. Surfside Road, these days, is awash with signs. They sit like flamingos on the yards, sounding “Black Lives Matter,” that the African American Meeting House needs results, and that Surfside Crossing remains a threat. One spray painted sheet of plywood simply bore the name “Breonna Taylor.” In mainland America, a ubiquitous sign proclaims the Apostles Creed of the suburbs: “In this house, we believe…” Those have yet to wash up on-island in any number, but they probably will. The signs annoy old friends of mine. “It isn’t Nantucket,” they say, with some dark comments about the H.D.C. And, to be sure, the signs aren’t Nantucket. In the summer, the island likes to keep its politics locked up in the shed with the snow shovels and the deer rifles. So many of the mortgage payments, tuition checks, and HBO subscriptions are directly tied to the good feeling and well wishing of the right-leaning plutocrats. If they don’t like the politics of your bumper stickers, they can find someone else to mow the lawn and trim the hedges. Silence is never natural—it only comes from power. As an island, in August we are meant to be beyond the ebb and flow of politics. Democrats and Republicans, progressives and conservatives are supposed to hang their debate points away with their ties and socks, then settle into their beach chairs. Richard Mellon Scaife, the billionaire who funded Troopergate and Swiftboating, walked the course at Skinners unprotested and unmolested. In August, politics should be like baseball: distant, pedantic, and inconsequential. The presidents on that other island are not welcome to golf here. The various elections should have the same consequence as a pennant race: engaging for those who are involved, but Not Our Kind, Dear. Should such topics arise at the table, a knowing smile will blow it away like so much passed gas. But those days are done. The signs are everywhere. If the ultimate displays of power are the echoes of silence, the deafening mutter of yard signs shouts down the status quo. If we have to virtue signal the platitudes and cliches that “Black Lives Matter” and “Science is Real,” we must think them to be revolutionary slogans. You shout the truth only when the silence believes the lie. You recite a creed to not only re-affirm your own beliefs, but to proclaim them to the unbelievers. All of those signs recite the same creed. All of those signal the same virtues. And, as a wave will drown in the sand, so will all of these signs. But by the time that happens, the beach has changed, people have moved, and the status quo has been shifted to a place where police can’t shoot a woman in her own house and doctors can say more about disease than politicians. That night, we shared this year’s favorite dinner; corn, tomatoes, grilled red potatoes, swordfish, and key lime pie. After dinner, I stepped back out to the grill to reassure myself, and others, that I had indeed turned off the gas. The Sturgeon Moon shouted out the dark and lit the island blue. Above it, Jupiter reflected its distant light and, somewhere hidden in the moon’s glare, the Perseids meteor shower had begun. You should never be surprised by the moon.
