Laughing Together Audience Experience at Nantucket Film Fest by Catherine Macallister Those of us who have stayed up way past bedtime on a Saturday to tune into the late night comedy stylings of the cast and crew of Saturday Night Live know that we are in for treat when we see the Nantucket Film Festival’s line up of comediennes who will be receiving this year’s Creative Impact Award. Anne Beatts, Jane Curtain, Heidi Gardner, Sudi Green, and Sarah Schneider represent various generations of comedy writers and performers who have kept audiences laughing at their witty sketches on Saturday Night Live. Executive Director of the Festival, Mystelle BrabbĂŠe comments: “It’s such a unique show, they’ve produced 40 episodes a year for 44 seasons. The amount of work is undeniable.â€? The popular ticketed event, The Comedy Roundtable, will see a first: the recipients of the Comedy Impact Award are also this year’s guests for the Signature Program. During the Signature Program—SNL Writers’ Room Gold—audience members can expect an inside look at un-aired sketches as well as conversation between the women led by NPR’s Ophira Eisenberg. Original SNL writer Anne Beatts will be returning to the island for the first time since 1967 as one of the recipients of this year’s Creative Impact Award. She is widely known for her work in the 1970s as a co-editor for the National Lampoon magazine and her Emmy award-winning work on Saturday Night Live. She went on to create and produce the 1980s show Square Pegs, where she says people “found it exceptional that I was running a show,â€? illustrating the underrepresentation of women writers and producers at the time. She recognizes that comedy has and hasn’t changed and that it’s “still harder for women to get jobs and get recognitionâ€? but that it’s a “really good time for strong women in comedy.â€? While she has stopped writing for SNL officially, she has returned on many occasions, writing for the likes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler but admits

One if by Land, Two if by Sea The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) will open their One if By Land, Two if By Sea exhibition with a festive reception this Friday, June 21, from 6 to 8 pm in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. “Given the vast history of New England and Nantucket, as the harbor fills with boats and the summer flora and fauna begins, we timed this exhibition to coincide with the arrival of the islands most colorful season. Nantucket lends itself to beautiful vistas, both of land and sea, so our artists were invited to bring in two smallish works or one large piece showcasing landscapes vs. seascapes, for this exhibition,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “And as an added plus, on the second floor we will continue to display some of the works completed during our 8th annual Plein Air Nantucket painting festival,” added Frazier. The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is Courtney Muller, who will also discuss her work during a Spotlight Artist Talk on Saturday, June 22 at 10 am in the gallery, 19 Washington Street. A stone’s throw from Main Street, the AAN Gallery displays jewelry, oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, wooden carvings, photographs, and some textiles by its nearly 300 local artist members. All this talent helps make the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson an award-winning gallery and one of the most comprehensive island venues for local art. One if By Land, Two if By Sea will be on display from June 21 – July 1 at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. The gallery is open Monday–Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm and 2:30 pm to 5 pm; Sundays, 11 am to 4 pm. For further information about the AAN and 2019 programs and events, please visit the website at www.nantucketarts.org or call 508-228-0722.

MMA SUMMER SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES
The Fate of The Universe by Catherine Macallister If you ever find yourself out on Surfside Beach on a clear night, look up and gaze at the star-filled sky. Above you in band that reaches across the night sky, you’ll see the Milky Way. Take a moment to be thankful to be in a place where you can see a clear night sky. The Summer Science Lecture series is back for its fourth year at the Maria Mitchell Association and an array of astronomers, scientists, and experts will offer lectures throughout the summer months. Lydia Gullicksen, the Executive Administrator and Development Associate for MMA reflects on the choice of speakers this summer saying “We try to pick speakers whose area of expertise might be of interest to the Nantucket community,” noting that this summer there is a focus on climate change. As a premiere scientific education center on island, the Maria Mitchell Association uses this summer series to “bring scientific topics to the community to educate first and foremost but also create a spark of science” says Gulliksen. Speaking this Wednesday, June 26, is Dr. Laura Prichard, an Affiliated Astronomer with MMA. She will present research on the beginnings of the Universe, galaxies and what will happen when The Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies collide in 4.5 billion years. Coming from the UK, Dr. Prichard was less familiar with Maria Mitchell initially but is “fascinated to hear the history” of the Maria Mitchell Association and Maria Mitchell herself. “As a woman in astronomy, I am so grateful to the women whose passion and hard work made it possible for me to pursue a career in research. Maria Mitchell was pivotal in bringing women into astronomy in the US.”

Campagnolo Clan on Nantucket by Robert P. Barsanti The Professors of the Peloton passed me at our new stop sign on Surfside Road and Bartlett. I eased to a stop, adjusted the radio, then looked up at sixteen middle-aged and older men swooping past me like starlings. They pulled out into the oncoming traffic, waved at the Miles Reis truck, smiled at a minivan on Bartlett, then darted back into the correct lane. My angry old man came out on the porch and put his hand on the horn. There is a bike path. Of course, I have been a bicyclist, just not one in a yellow singlet. I spent my first year on island bicycling and mooching rides; I know the heady thrill of riding the yellow line in the middle of the street. And I also knew the certain caution that comes from looking at the dirty stuffed animals tied to the front of the Miles Reis trash trucks rolling down York Street and at freewheeling bicycle me. Ask not for whom the horn sounds, it honks at thee. Freedom isn’t free. The Campagnolo Clan counts on that. Their freedom got delivered by Amazon Prime on a same-day discount. They bought the road they rode on; it came in the same package deal as the Nantucket Cycling Experience. Somewhere in their minds, when they made their reservations, they bought the dream of a Tour de Ack. They don’t work on Saturdays; they have special sunglasses; and they are up-to-date on their legal retainers. We sold the Professors in the Peloton this dream, and now they are making it real. Miles Reis himself, behind the wheel of a great blue trash truck, wouldn’t break their contract. The Campagnolo Clan have another retainer: one for righteousness. They are athletes, of course, who are bringing themselves to an endorphin peak out in the sea air while we sit, clogging our arteries and befouling the air behind the wheel. They breathe a monastic gust, one that swirls above the air conditioning and exhaust. The Clan had dedicated themselves to a higher power, and like flagellants walking through Paris, demanded a certain veneration from the rabble. I followed the clan at a deferential distance down Surfside and onto the Boulevard. At the look of a wide open road, they stood in their saddles and raced up to and into the first puddle. When the water reached the pedals, they stopped mid-way across. I enjoyed watching them litigate their way to shore. We don’t live on an island that can easily indulge the Professors in the Peloton. The roads are too narrow, the traffic is too heavy, and the drivers wear the black hat rakishly. Somehow, I can imagine a Concord-Carlisle bicyclist seeing the island map and the loop out from town to Sconset and back, then put himself at the handlebars on the Polpis Road dawn. Maps are the dreams men write down in the morning. When the dream fades and the wind picks up, you need to drop a few gears and soldier on. We don’t live on an island that can make many dreams real. We try, of course, and, if the dream is modest enough, we succeed. But island dreams tend to get more and more complicated the further away from the sand and spray. I don’t think it is crazy to imagine you and your buddies biking around continued on page 22

Movies can be like fine wine. Depth, character, and an unexpected ending are all qualities that can be found in both of these creative endeavors. What makes each of them unique is the artistic style of the director who has a vision from start to finish of the project. This is played out by a multitude of influencers involved in the ever-evolving plot. If all goes well in the initial stages of development, post-production is typically more of a minimalistic, hands-off approach. The final cut is the culmination of hours, days, and months of hard work, determination, and passion all bottled up into one. The annual Nantucket Film Festival gives us the opportunity to experience movies that we may never have otherwise seen, much less heard about. Here you have the opportunity to meet and greet with the filmmakers themselves, attend discussions to learn more about life behind the scenes, and discover stories that are told through the art of film.
THE BEES HAVE IT The benefits of bees far outweigh the possible sting you might receive from them. In fact, live without bees would leave a much bigger sting that could ever be possibly imagined. Bees are responsible for a majority of pollination in the world. This includes not only flowers and vineyards, but also some of the food we eat. Honeyland is the story of a beekeeper Hatidze in the remote mountains of Macedonia. He tends to his hives with the golden rule for sustainable honey cultivation: you take half and you leave half for the bees. See what happens in this documentary when nature’s delicate balance is threatened when new tenants move in next door. Creating and maintaining balance is key in the vineyards as well. Idlewood Flora & Fauna “The Bee” is a lovely Piedmontese inspired white wine from the rugged hills of Mendocino County in California. Angler’s Paradise Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation On Nantucket, we are fortunate to have an amazing sport fishery suited to everyone from the newest anglers to seasoned “old salts.” Whether you're interested in a good fight on the line or feel inspired to catch dinner, Nantucket has a rich fishing tradition with many species available to catch. You might not notice it among the shops and galleries along the wharfs, but there is still an active, working waterfront that we all benefit from. Even if you never go fishing yourself, the commercial fishermen and women, the oyster farmers, scallopers, and charter captains all work on the water from various parts of the island throughout the year. If you want to go fishing yourself, there are many options depending on your interests, time available, and who else you are with. There is really something for everyone. “Wetting a line” while on Nantucket makes you a part of the fishing tradition in this maritime community.
BEACH FISHING Anyone can go fishing from the shores of Nantucket and have a good chance of landing a fish; especially from now through September. My fiveyear-old neighbor brought his little rod down to Brant Point last year to fish off the beach and into the channel like so many other locals looking for a meal. Not only did he succeed, he caught a keeper bass to share with his family. The pride he felt at catching that fish is evident when he tells the story himself. Brant Point may be crowded at times, but it can be a prime surfcasting spot during rising or falling tides as the narrow inlet to the harbor creates a strong, fast moving current that pulls and pushes bait in and out. Great Point is the most notorious of shore-fishing on Nantucket. The difficulty in getting out there somehow makes the fishing all the better. First you have to drive almost 40-minutes in a vehicle that can handle the soft sand as well as a permit to do so. Access may also be limited by nesting shorebirds, high tides, and storms which close the access. Once you’re out continued on page 25

Laughing Together from page 3
she “doesn’t know the new generation” as well. Beatts points out the “terrific crop of women” currently a part of Saturday Night Live and the impact cast members like Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Cecily Strong, and Melissa Villasenor. Beatts is currently working on a documentary about women in comedy titled The Girl in the Room, inspired by former SNL cast member Gilda Radner and the notion that she was often the only “girl in the room” when it came to comedy in the 1970s. Anne Beatts is currently teaching at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, where she imparts wisdom and a rigorous schedule to her students, often having them write as though they were sketch comedy writers on SNL. Witty as ever, Beatts reflects on her journey as a comedy writer, awardwinner and professor and is reminded of a phrase a good friend once shared with her, a little advice for future writers, and the importance of perseverance: “If you can’t get in the door, go through the window.” Leslie Dixon, another comedy great, is this year’s honoree for the Screenwriter’s Tribute Award. Dixon’s screenwriting abilities are apparent in films like Outrageous Fortune, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hairspray, Freaky Friday, The Thomas Crowne Affair, and Limitless. Dixon joins a long list of accomplished screenwriters who have received this award over the course of 21 years, becoming the fourth female to win. Mystelle Brabbée describes Dixon as “somebody who has this unbelievably long body of work,” spanning comedy, musicals, and, more recently, suspenseful plots. While the award is not a lifetime achievement award, it recognizes the important work of writers and is for a “a screenwriter who has impacted American cinema,” and as Brabbée points out, Leslie Dixon “checked all sorts of boxes with sixteen films under her belt.” Brabbée is also keen to point out that “comedies are not always recognized” in the world of cinema, so taking the time and opportunity to recognize Dixon and the women of SNL shows the way in which comedy has changed the landscape of film and television, particularly for women. Laughing Together from page 19
SNL Comedy Round Table will be held Saturday June, 22 in the Main Dreamland Theater, followed by the Screenwriters Tribute Awards that begin at 6:30pm in the ‘Sconset Casino. The film festival is an opportunity for a Nantucket audience to see a collection of films that have been carefully selected by the Festival team. Basil Tsiokos, Film Program Director, describes the uniqueness of the Nantucket Film Festival and how it “brings attention to gems that might otherwise go unnoticed.” “It’s connecting and engaging,” says Tsiokos and it’s “nicely contained,” emphasizing the schedule of about 60 shows and programs that allow for a greater audience engagement with each selection. With larger film festivals like the Sundance Film Festival or Tribeca Film Festival, films and features get lost “unless you know to look” says Tsiokos. This year especially, you will find women at the forefront of films and programs as writers, producers, and performers—sometimes all of the above. Find your favorite films and programs ahead of time at nantucketfilmfestival.org and prepare to be swept away by the lineup of films, features and stars that will be on Nantucket through Monday, June 24. The Nantucket Film Festival has programs and films running morning to evening, and provides attendees with the chance to experience cinema at its finest and most vulnerable. Mystelle Brabbée commented on the success of the festival in its ability to bring audiences together: “It’s that shared experience of sitting in a theater and sharing in a story…crying…laughing together.”

Dr. Prichard has studied the stars, the universe, and the physics behind it all, earning her doctorate in astrophysics from the University of Oxford. Her research has brought her to places like the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the European Southern Observatory, otherwise known as “The Very Large Telescope” in Chile. Currently she is working as a post-doctoral astronomer and researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr Prichard shares her fascination with science and astronomy saying “I have traveled to some incredible places to use telescopes, go to conferences, and work with collaborators and have met many interesting and inspirational people along the way from around the world.” For those of us who don’t know the science lingo and theories, Dr.Prichard will break it down in an informative and thought-provoking lecture. She hopes to share how “both incredible even our small corner of the Universe is, and sheer scales of space” adding, “hopefully without inducing too much of an existential crisis.” Join Dr. Laura Prichard on Wednesday June 26 at 33 Washington Street from 7 to 8pm. This event is free to MMA members and $10 for non-members. If you can’t make it this week, be sure to check out the other Science Lecture Series presenters that will be sharing everything from the stars to the sea over the course of the summer. The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a private non-profit organization that was founded in 1902 in honor of Maria Mitchell, a well-known astronomer and educator who made great strides in the science community. In an effort to preserve the importance of science and education for all ages, the Maria Mitchell Association invites you to purchase a ticket to their fundraiser, The Red Ticket Soiree. Every summer, MMA hosts the Red-Tie Soiree to benefit the research and programs that are provided to the public all year round. This soiree under the stars will be held on Sunday, July 14 from 7-10pm at the Sankaty Head Golf Club. Tickets and more information about MMA can be found at mariamitchell.org

the island. But the island won’t hammer that dream true, nor will the agents, consultants, or contractors. The truth is an eight-inch deep puddle on the Boulevard...or Equator...or Skyline...or Lover’s Lane. Geology is destiny. Everything that we do on the island is dependent on the rocks, water, and sand underneath us. All of those puddles have been ponds for a very long time, and they will continue to be ponds. We can fill them, divert them, and drain them, but the geology doesn’t change just because there is a strip of pavement running over it. When the rain comes, the pond returns. For several hundred years, people saw Nantucket as a blank pillow they could fill with dreams. A sand hill thirty miles out to sea didn’t have any of the usual flora, fauna, or culture that the mainland had. So, our island fathers looked at the moors and imagined what we could put there instead of seeing what was there already: we planned our bike trip across the moors. So much of the current island came at the tail end of someone else’s fantasy. We brought the bunnies so horse riders could hunt them, we brought the deer because they looked cute, we planted the elms because that’s what a Main Street should have. The elms don’t belong here any more than the Professors of the Peloton, although they move much slower and don’t flip you off in traffic. The truth the wind knows has been buried deep in sand. Lawns, roses, hydrangea, and even elm trees obscure that truth, but can’t eliminate it. Up in Pocomo Point, the Gamble house stands as the epitome of island fantasies. It was built on the windiest spot on-island and with Nantucket in mind…to put a thumb in its eye. But then, as the days blew past, the burned truth of Nantucket was made manifest. The owners couldn’t open the windows; the fog and wet of the island would warp all of the precious woods hijacked from Africa and Brazil. The shades had to be drawn in order to keep the wood’s color. The candy-striped bannister was at particular risk of warping, splitting, and fading. Now, the sand had shifted on the bluff and the upstairs doors won’t close. So it must be moved back from the bluff and into the next twenty years of its existence. Only the sand knows what happens after that.

Arneis, and 2% Cortese. The wine is very aromatic with scents of honey and wildflowers from the Muscat, yet has structure from the Arneis that leaves a touch of richness on your palate with the finish. This pays homage to the work bees do in the vineyard to make the flora and fauna flourish.
WORDS
OF
LOVE
No movie is complete without some sort of love story. Director Nick Broomfield shows us the intimate, bittersweet story of the love between world-famous musician Leonard Cohen and his muse, Marianne Ihlen, in the film Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love. Learn about this unconventional relationship that endured for half a century after they met on a Greek Island in the 1960s. This romantic documentary would be made even sweeter with in-hand a glass of Château Léoube “Rosé de Léoube” from Côtes de Provence, France. This organic pale salmon-pink color rosé wine is made from a blend of Grenache and Cinsault, completed by a touch of Syrah and Mourvèdre. This fruity, well-balanced, and generous wine will have you falling in love with it over and over again.
BLACK
AS
NIGHT
While most movies are about one story that may have many common threads throughout the scenes, DC NOIR by talented writer/producer George Pelecanos is a crime anthology of four stories. Each sequence is set and filled within the neighborhoods of Washington, DC. From a hit man in love, to friends drawn into drug dealing, and the lives of cops in between, the name of the film shows some of the dark side of city living. A great monster of wine to pair with this movie noir is Leviathan Red Blend from California. This monster of a wine is Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, all blended together to produce a singular wine that showcases the best characteristics of the vintage. Red plum, spice, vanilla, and oak are all elements you will find in this flamboyant racy blend. continued on page 24

WOMEN WARRIORS Nothing makes for a great movie plot than when someone tells the main character that they can’t, and then they do. This is exactly the theme for this year’s closing film feature, Maiden. The story is about British sailor Tracy Edwards, who was long dismissed and belittled as the only woman crew member on the ships where she worked. In order to prove herself, she entered the Whitbread Round the World Race, typically an all-male endeavor, with an all-female crew determined to prove her naysayers wrong. Filmmaker Alex Holmes creates an uplifting, against-all-odds story that will have you out of your seat cheering not just for the story itself, but also for the historical footage and method of historical storytelling. To toast the end of this heroic seafaring saga, we cheer with a taste of Krug Grand Cuvée Champagne. While the house of Krug has been known for many years, it’s current presence and stature in the marketplace is due to the efforts of President and CEO Maggie Henriquez. Born in Venezuela and educated in the United States, Maggie was the former President of Möet Hennessy Argentina before taking her current position. Her visionary spirit serves as her inspiration as she guides Maison Krug into new areas, while still respecting the roots and history of how Krug came to be. Whichever movies you decide to see this weekend, be sure to get in line early so that you have your first choice of seat in the house. If you are looking for some nourishment or libations before or after a film, enjoy a tasty breakfast or a freshly made salad and sandwich served with warm hospitality at The Beet, open from 8 am to 8 pm just steps from the Dreamland Theater at 9 South Water Street. Cheers to the cinema and the sips that pair with the movies!

there fishing, you still may have to battle one of hundreds of grey seals for your catch. It’s all just part of the adventure! There are good surfcasting spots all around the island. It depends on wind, season, water temperatures, and a little luck, of course. To know where to go, it's good to check with the local scene.
INSHORE FISHING Inshore is the typical type of fishing not far from the docks or the beach. Striped bass, and bluefish are the targets this time of year. Later in the season, the bonito will show up followed by the false albacore. Great with a guide, but completely doable solo in a small boat or kayak.
BOTTOM FISHING Trolling the bottom from a boat is where some of the most delicious fish can be found; fluke and black sea bass are the top with both served at many of the island’s top restaurants. Scup (commonly known as porgy) also make for a great fish fry, but can be overlooked as a sportfish. When bottom, or deep sea fishing, some of the non-target species are interesting as well. Sea Robins, for example, don't usually grace the table. This fish, also known as gurnard, have “feeler fins,” which make them look like they're walking on the bottom of the ocean. Just last week Topspin fishing charters caught a sea robin and brought it to the Maria Mitchell Aquarium to be put in a display tank. Many of the local charter boats contribute to the seasonal, local aquarium bringing anything from dogfish, skates, and small flounder to oyster toadfish, seahorses, and any other Southern species that travel up in the Gulf Stream. Check out many of these species for yourself at 28 Washington Street (mma.org).
OFFSHORE FISHING Offshore fishing is where people go to find big tuna, sharks, and cod. Many factors come into play regarding fishing for these species. This is where experience comes in. The guides who fish these areas put their time in and continued on page 26

track patterns to know the when and where. Of course, sometimes it's more than the fish themselves that make the experience. If you're lucky enough to venture offshore, there's a good chance of seeing other species like whales; after all they're looking for food too. Typical encounters can include humpback whales, minke, finback, and pilot whales, but others are possible as well. Just last week a charter boat off of Chatham spotted an orca with a pod of dolphins – a species usually found in Arctic and Antarctic Waters. Also be on the lookout for North Atlantic right whales, one of the most endangered species with just over four hundred individuals left in the wild. It is important to remember that for boaters, kayakers, paddle-boarders, etc. it is illegal to approach North Atlantic right whales within 500 yards (1500 feet) without a Federal Research Permit. Binoculars are best in this case. Pelagic birds are another bonus for offshore trips. Shearwaters, jaegers, and petrels are more common in open water. These birds rarely spend time close to shore. Off-shore whale watches or fishing trips are one of the few ways to view such birds in the wild. Other memorable encounters I've had include views of surfacing leatherback turtles (over six feet long!) and regular sightings of Mola Mola, or Ocean Sunfish. The surfacing fin can fool a novice, but I've been pleasantly surprised to find a five foot long Sunfish rather than a shark. Before you go out, make sure you know the fishing regulations, so you know what the size limits are for keepers and how many individuals you can keep. If you hire a charter, have a talk with your captain before-hand about whether or not you want to keep any fish or just take photos. Then no fish will be wasted. Want to know more about the Nantucket fishing scene? Local guides and charter captains like Captain Fred Tonkin of the Herbert T know up-to-theminute information about what, when, where, and how. You’ll find Capt. Tonkin at Slip 14 on Straight Wharf (508-228-6655)—he has the knowledge and the gear to help you have an experience of a lifetime.
