Poetry Written by Our Bodies
July 15-21, 2021

by Suzanne Daub As writers use words to articulate the human condition, dancers uses movement to express human emotion. Both artistic endeavors require dedication and imagination, hard work and passion, giving into rhythm and continuing with intention. Whether you use an interplay of words or an interplay of motion, both writing and dance communicate. As author Lene Fogelberg wrote: “Dancing is like poetry written by our bodies: our outstretched arms our words of longing.” It seems natural that our Nantucket Atheneum presents as its major annual fundraiser a festival of dance that brings stars of ballet to the island. For four days this July, a selection of the nation’s best ballet dancers will perform to benefit our island’s public library. Now in its 14th year, the Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival is a major source of funds for this beloved community center for learning, culture, education, and pleasure. For the first time, Dance Festival performances will be outdoors and free. In 2007, a committee of Atheneum staff and board members conceived the idea for a dance event that would serve the dual purpose of raising funds and sharing culture. The committee included many appreciators of dance who were donors, patrons, and board members at the New York City Ballet and the Boston Ballet. Together, they organized a single dance performance. This single performance event evolved and grew over the next twelve years into a multi-day festival with classes, lectures, films, demonstrations, dinners, and gatherings that culminated in two days of star-studded performances. Then came the pandemic. Last year Artistic Director Tyler Angle, Atheneum staff, and the dedicated committee who plan the festival pivoted and created a virtual dance festival with continued on page 13

Bringing Special Magic to Nantucket Serenella 44, the exciting new retail concept at 44 Centre Street, Nantucket created by Leslee Shupe, blends the best of international high fashion and artisanal design. This is Serenella’s second outpost on our island, joining Serenella at 9B South Beach Street, known as one of the top 50 boutiques in the world and consistently voted “Best of” and heralded by regional and national publications. To accomplish her goals with Serenella 44, Leslee scanned the globe and hand-selected a refined selection of the season's must-haves in ready-to-wear and accessories. To compliment the fashions, they offer a fresh take on tableware, home accents, and modern apothecary treasures offered by Serenella Casa. In her search, Serenella 44 emphasizes brands exuding a robust sense of place to transport clients through the design and craftmanship of these pieces. Leslee has always been an advocate for the Latin American fashion and design community through her work with the Latin American Fashion Summit. While serving as a judge in 2019, she discovered Juan de Dios, a resort-wear brand out of Colombia founded by Isabella Gutierrez and Maria Valencia. “The impetus to bring Juan de Dios to Nantucket is that the brand is really the ethos of my philosophy of the theme of Serenella 44,” Leslee explained. For Summer 2021, Leslee is pleased to present to you a select offering from the latest coming out of Juan de Dios’s Colombia. Juan de Dios has partnered with another Colombian women-owned brand, Moye, which also originates from the picturesque, storied countryside of Colombia. Through their pieces, they narrate a story where the magical and the mythical intertwine with the everyday...a story in which the elements of nature, embodied in prints, become the narrators. continued on page 22

Loving, Trusting, and Evolving Through Art
Kathleen Knight’s passion for art has brought internationally known painters, sculptors, glass artists, and artisans to Nantucket at her downtown gallery for more than three decades. Her love of art makes for an exciting and enlightening gallery visit, as she shares her discoveries with all who come up the stairs to her expansive second-floor space that is Gallery at Four India. The collection of traditional and contemporary art there is like nothing else anywhere on our island. This week, Kathleen is hosting a “double-feature.” Thursday, July 15 from 6 to 8 pm is the opening reception for Nantucket in Bloom, an exhibition of paintings by American Impressionist Candace Whittemore Lovely. Her Nantucket paintings capture the essence of an island summer and will be on display to July 23. Starting this Saturday, July 17, The Gallery at Four India is hosting the return to Nantucket of internationally acclaimed painter Giovanni DeCunto in an exhibition named Love—Trust—Evolve. The artist will attend an opening reception Saturday

True Value During The New Normal by Robert P. Barsanti
We went to the movies for the first time in a year or so. The superheroes were on the big screen, the sound shook the seats, and no one looked back at the explosions. In front of us, a string of teenagers needled each other and glanced at their phones. We were glad to be there, glad to be maskless, and glad that they were making popcorn again. After the final explosions, and the credits, and the after-credits, we emerged into a damp night where the last seating on Oak Street gave us applause. We have travelled a long way through the fog. And it has broken. Movies, cinemas, and popcorn have been an important part of my family’s lives. Before the pandemic, I would drive hours to the young man’s school, take him to some super-powered, mutant-infested, near apocalypse, buy him a bucket of popcorn the size of his prodigious head, and let the film take him away. If the movie was especially to his liking, he would bounce, he would stand, and he would chatter throughout. Without the cinema, he made microwave popcorn and watched the movies on one small screen or another, but he was without the kinetic nuclear joy that came from a trip to the movies. I don’t know if we are fully back from the gray and wet pandemic. Like the fog, it remains perched offshore in reefs of gray and purple, waiting for a shift in the wind to task us and take back our time. Now, in the clear evening air, we have lines forming on Dave Street and Broad Street every night. The birthday parties are filling their voices with song as well as the restaurants. You can walk around the supermarket, buy toilet paper and ice cream, and then trade gossip with the cashier without talking through a mask or a plexiglass screen. At one breakfast place, one eight-person table was taken up by a large group of St. Grottlesex boys and another table with an equally handsome and large group of Miss Greenhill girls. They tried to ignore each other. So, you can fool yourself into thinking that fingers were snapped, the world was reset, and we are in the clear. In the new normal, we eat outside. Al fresco has become a favorite side dish. For some of the small restaurants, their dining room just expanded to their parking; the financial attraction is tangible. But for the diners, the meal is a lot more pleasant under the trees and on the cobblestones than it is cooped and crammed into a a tastefully decorated, dimly lit box. The Europeans had this figured out a long time ago, the Wagyu steak and the shrimp scampi taste better with more room, more sea air, and the rustle of an elm tree. We go to plays and movies outside as well. The Dreamland drive-in has proven itself over the last year-and-a-half. We will pile into cars and head out for an old movie in our car seats. Or, we will go to Bartlett’s for Mamma Mia, even if we spend more time basking in the sunset and stars than we do in the stage lights. Perhaps the greatest change post pandemic doesn’t come from what is open, but from what is closed. Restaurants, bakeries, and stores close up for many evenings and many days. More than a few of the restaurants have adopted the September-Long-Weekend-Schedule, where there is food on the table Thursday through Sunday, but the chairs are upside down otherwise. And don’t show up after eight. Perhaps the stores are without cashiers or clerks, but they are also without the fierce capitalistic urge that kept the lights on deep into the evening continued on page 26

Arts on Nantucket
Art abounds this week on Nantucket, and here are our Staff Picks for island gallery exhibits you just can’t miss...
Friday, July 16 is your last chance to see works by Adam Saligman at Susan Lister Locke Gallery located on the harbor at 28 Easy Street. A world traveler & teacher of literature, Saligman’s photography beautifully captures the shapes and colors of our planet and its people. Come back to the gallery on July 24 for the opening of a new exhibit featuring local multimedia artist Anne Marie Bratton.
Thursday, July 15 from 6 to 8 pm is the opening reception for Nantucket in Bloom, an exhibition of paintings by American Impressionist Candace Whittemore Lovely at Gallery at Four India. Capturing the essence of an island summer, Lovely has been referred to as “the top American living female impressionist artist” and “The Grand Dame of Boston Painters.” Sold throughout the world, many of her works have depicted life and landscapes from New England. Her paintings capture the moment. “Nantucket in Bloom” continues through July 23. Starting this Saturday, July 17, The Gallery at Four India is hosting the return to Nantucket of internationally acclaimed painter Giovanni DeCunto in an exhibition named Love—Trust—Evolve. The artist will attend an opening reception Saturday evening from 6 to 8 pm, and his art will be on display at the Gallery at Four India through the end of August.

Island artist G.S. Hill has stunning new paintings in his gallery at 40 Straight Wharf. Well-loved for his paintings of Nantucket that grace many homes here and around the world, Greg is known for his plein air work and his water views. This season he has again devoted time to painting sweeping island vistas that capture the serenity of Nantucket. And with canvases that measure just 8 inches tall and 30 inches wide and longer, these paintings are perfect for that spot in your home where nothing else will quite suffice.
Head to the Hostetler Gallery at 42 Centre Street for the Opening Reception of Shaped By Light The Oculus Series on Friday, July 16. The artist, Mohamed Yakub, will be present to dive in to his architectural photography, each image transcending the architecture and offering a unique vision of another world.

July is upon us, and it’s high season on the island. When traffic is too much and you can’t find a parking spot by your favorite beach, it’s a perfect time to get out on one of the many trails around the island. We are fortunate that there are so many trails created and maintained by our dedicated conservation organizations. With efforts by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Nantucket Land Bank, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, Mass Audubon, the ‘Sconset Trust and more, we all have plenty of options to choose from. July is also the perfect time for berry picking. Whether you want a casual snack on the trail or are in for some serious foraging and pie-making, there is something for every palate. The native wild edible berries of Nantucket vary in their sweetness as well as in their availability. Some are more like “pie berries” where they are so plentiful you can easily find enough to make a pie. Blueberries fall into this category. Other berries are just as delicious, but are less plentiful. These are the muffin or pancake berries. Black huckleberry fits this description. Lastly, there are the infrequent producers. These are generally plants that produce delicious berries, but only a few per plant or the plants themselves are not easily found. Shadbush falls into this category for me, as well as elderberry. These are “snack berries.” If you are lucky enough to find them, you have to just eat them on the spot and enjoy the treat while out and about. Many friends have noted recently that this is a banner year for high bush blueberries. High bush are usually the first of the wild summer berries to fruit (not counting the early summer strawberries at the farm). The high bush blueberry bushes (Vaccinium corymbosum) are taller shrubs usually around five to eight feet tall and like to have their feet wet. That means that they like their roots to be in or near water, so check on the edges of wetlands where there is still plenty of sunlight. Really old shrubs can have a gnarled appearance. The berries produced are the fat, juicy blueberries similar to the ones people usually find in the grocery store. However, they are the second most important species commercially. The next bushes to fruit—lowbush blueberry—is the leading source of commercial blueberries in North America. On a recent walk in the middle moors with my son and our dog, we came upon a perfect patch of lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium). These are the tiny berries that grow low to the ground along the edges of many paths. Don’t let their size fool you. They are very sweet and plentiful. These are pie berries. The edible berries are rich in vitamin C and sugars. Lowbush blueberry plants are easy to find along our many open, sunny trails. Tolerant of nutrient poor soils, the lowbush blueberry bushes love the sandplain grassland and heathlands found around the island. This past weekend while on a walk at Squam Farm my son exclaimed, “Mom, there are raspberries!” I almost let him try it knowing it would be sour and force a pucker on his face, but I felt kind that day. “No,” I told him. “That is a dewberry. Like a blackberry. You need to find a black one for it to be sweet.” We found a few and they were delicious, but it’s only mid-July. The dewberries and blackberries won’t be ripe in any abundance for a few more weeks. Dewberries and blackberries are all members of the Rubus genus, along with raspberries. Some are more viney than others and some grow more upright, but all have that characteristic berry clump. Knowing what color it will be when it’s ripe helps to know if you’ll get a mouth full of sour or a sweet treat. Because the Rubus species on Nantucket are primarily low-growing, they are favorites of our small mammals, rabbits, and birds alike. My son wondered if the turtles ate them as well. As omnivores, I think a spotted a painted turtle traveling the uplands of Squam Swamp would eat a berry or three if it could reach them. My personal favorite is next in the edible calendar: Black huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata). The dark purple/black berries are plentiful since this is one of the most dominant shrubs of Nantucket. Found throughout the moors, south coast, and heathlands, black huckleberries ripen at the end of July - early August. They are slightly sweeter than a blueberry with a similar taste. The tiny seeds can be eaten (just like a blueberry), but have a little crunch to them that adds texture. These are great berries on top of ice cream, in pancakes, or just as a snack continued on page 27

Dance Festival from page 3
“really wonderful film projects,” Angle explained. “We had live musicians, performed what had been planned, and filmed it. It was a bright light for us as performers during a dark time: we could practice our craft and help a worthy organization.” Donors were generous, and the library received needed funds. It takes months to plan the Atheneum Dance Festival, so organizers had to start on the 2021 Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival at a time when they did not know what restrictions Tyler Angle would still be in place. “It was a wildly changing landscape, with the realities of the pandemic and dancers being out of work for a year and a half… there were a lot of moving pieces,” said Angle. “We realized that we could not plan an indoor festival with any surety.” “Everything is different this year,” added festival co-chair Cathy Weinroth, “We wanted the festival to be live if possible, but we weren’t sure how.” After much discussion, the concept of an outdoor venue was considered. Planning was intense and focused: an outdoor festival involved juggling many new issues and calculations, permits, technical challenges, and equipment. The hours of hard work have come to fruition, and on July 22, 23, and 24, six free performances of the 2021 Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival will be held at Children’s Beach. Each of the six performances will be one hour long. Three different programs are planned: two performances of each. Eighteen dancers and five musicians will perform during the three days. “There were a lot of discussions on the program… we wanted to make it visually and musically interesting. In a normal year, we do two performances: same cast and same pieces,” Angle described. “This year, be-

cause we are doing slightly shorter programs with no intermission—and with two performances a day—I did not want the performers to be doing the same movements in every program.” The final plans are for what Angle describes as “three beautiful jewel box performances: each with five or six pieces—they are jampacked full of dancing.” Dancers in this year’s festival are high-caliber principal dancers and soloists from New York City Ballet, Miami Ballet, Boston Ballet, the L.A. Dance Project, and Houston Ballet. Many of these bright talents performed in the 2020 virtual festival. “I felt strongly about asking all the dancers who put all the work in during 2020 to come back this year and perform. Some of the pieces are those that were filmed, but they will be different: dancers draw a lot of energy from the audience,” said Angle. Musicians include world-renown and critically acclaimed performers and composers. A list of performers can be found on nantucketdancefest.org In addition, for the 2021 festival a “Choreo Challenge” was designed around “music that was interesting and rigorous, but very danceable by Timo Andres.” Judges chose two winners: Eric Trope, a dancer with Miami City Ballet, and Abdul Latif, a choreographer from New York City. Their original choreographed dances will be part of each performance. Changing the venue from the large, modern auditorium of Nantucket High School to Children’s Beach required strategizing. The sheltered bandstand stage will be built out so the part of the stage will be outside the pavilion, lighting and sound systems are being brought in, chairs will be provided for ticketholders. “In performance—no matter where you are—an otherworldly focus happens… the difference between indoor and outdoor is mostly for the audience. There will be more stimulus around the audience… it is a more active show with more light over the audience: not dark and anonymous... I think it will be bustling with energy,” said Angle. “The biggest thing is weather,” he added. “Weather on Nantucket is usually glorious…and most of the dancers and all of the musicians have done performances in outdoor theatres...there are three distinct programs with completely different works, so we can change the programs if there are weather issues that might make the stage slippery.” Dance festival organizers plan to proceed with continued on page 28

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

It is the place where my soul connects with nature, where the magic happens!” In the Juan de Dios brand, that magic helps to make women feel feminie and beautiful with effortless elegance. Moye is renowned for its exquisite interior décor and wallpaper. In it’s collaboration—Juan de Dios x Moye—this company enables clients to add the beauty of Colombia’s magical landscape to their homes as well as fashion. The capsule collaboration features everything from bold printed dresses to wallpaper emblazoned in the same motifs, pillow covers, and napkin and tablecloth sets all featuring intricate designs inspired by the flora and fauna of Colombia. With this latest offering at Serenalla 44, Leslee is thrilled to bring the magic of Colombia to Nantucket through this very special partnership with Juan de Dios and Moye—at the same time, celebrating the artisanal talent of Latin America and supporting two women-owned businesses. “Nantucket style has allure, that “je ne sais quoi,” and charm and makes you feel great!” added Valencia. “The lifestyle where you go to the beach in the day and then dress up for the night.” And Leslee Shupe’s impeccable taste at Serenella 44 and Serenella helps women on Nantucket to do just that! evening from 6 to 8 pm, and his art will be on display at the Gallery at Four India through the end of August. A world traveler based in Boston, Giovanni DeCunto is described as a Global Expressionist; his 2021 exhibition here on Nantucket combines pop and mod-
ern art in a form that is all his own. DeCunto’s work consists of abstract and representational forms made with acrylic paint—poetic, gracefully formed, and at times boldly colored—that hang in perfect balance. He has developed a technique that no other contemporary painter is using that excludes the use of tools.
He manipulates the paint through movement and, occasionally, with the touch of his hands to create a oneof-a kind pieces unlike anything else currently on the market. Giovanni also spoke of a new technique he is using in some of his abstract expressionist paintings— a technique that makes them seem to glow: “depending on the light, they change radically...All in painting is either reflection or absorption: I’ve taken it to a new level. I trap light and bend it in the painting.” Kathleen Knight has been collaborating with Giovanni DeCunto since 1990 and believes he sets the standard for combining pop and modern art with classical impressionism. She explains: “Giovanni has more depth, thought, and emotion than other pop artists. His extraordinary work is unique and on par with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. “Giovanni has always been ahead of his time,” Knight continued. “His work moves people at a time when we need peace, harmony, unity, and love the most. And, his unparalleled ability to combine different art genres together yields very emotional and powerful original pieces that contemporary art collectors will appreciate beyond measure.” The Love—Trust—Evolve exhibit features original artistic works of flags, abstracts, and portraits. The “Love” portion of the exhibit is an ode to the “Women We Love,” showcasing 36 x 36 portraits of iconic, beloved women such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Twiggy. The “Evolve” section of the exhibit represents how artists have evolved from traditional art to abstract art, featuring 50 x 60 abstracts of flowers and other miracles of nature. The “Trust” part of the exhibit addresses the unity and patriotism people continued on page 24

crave as we heal our nation, featuring 48 x 48 paintings of freedom flags. The theme of the exhibit reflects the current state of our country. Giovanni, always the patriot, says he tries to see positive results of the pandemic: “I’m very sorry for all the losses, but I’m trying to regard it as something that was happening to the world that would get us to understand what the future could bring. People are starting to identify that we need each other…there’s no real platform we can follow to build the future, but when we can trust the people around you, we can build a building. When you cannot trust them, you cannot build anything. “What we really need is a language that we can speak universally to be able to convey trust to each other and work together–my art is presenting itself as that language,” he explained. “I believe that art will help you share with the person next to you, and when you can share, you can love. When you can love, you can trust, and when the country can start to love ourselves again and start trusting, then we can evolve.” Giovanni is thrilled to be exhibiting again at Gallery at Four India with Kathleen Knight: “I really like Nantucket: for a lot of great artists it has been part of their journey. I feel lucky to be represented there. There is a truism on the island, an identity.” Kathleen is excited to host Giovanni in-person at the opening on July 17 and to again show his work: “What excites me about his return is to give artists who dream of having a successful career the opportunity to meet and speak to Giovanni, who has worked very hard to get where he is today.” “We will bring together art aficionados, community leaders, and local friends,” added deCunto, “to celebrate the concept of Love, Trust, and Evolve when we need it the most—during the first post-COVID summer. Art brings healing and beauty during this critical time.” July 17 to August 31: Love—Trust—Evolve in The Gallery at Four India upstairs at 4 India Street • 508-228-8509 • thegallerynantucket.com

Live AAN Gala Returns on Saturday
Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is thrilled to announce that it is, once again, hosting its annual Art Auction and Gala at the Great Harbor Yacht Club this Saturday, July 17. The evening event will be in-person again after the pandemic pushed the 2020 Gala to an online-only format. “We are especially delighted to be hosting the annual Art Auction and Gala, in person, back at the Great Harbor Yacht Club this year,” said AAN Executive Director Courtney Bridges. “It is a joy to welcome back our loyal patrons and artist members to the tradition of AAN’s most festive evening of the year, and at the same time honor longtime and beloved artist member, generous supporter and past board president Lynn Nicholas as this year’s honorary artist.” The July 17 event will feature a silent auction that anyone, even those not attending the live event, will be able to participate in. Bidding will be held via the online link at www.32auctions.com/GalaSilent2021. Bobby Frazier, AAN Artistic Director, says, "To offer this online opportunity to our patrons near and far is a great benefit and something that we learned during the pandemic. It opens up the event to so many more of our devoted art enthusiasts.” The Gala event will also be filmed by NCTV18 and can be viewed live on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H98eKPizNEc Limited tickets to the Art Auction and Gala were still available as of this publication’s press date. The New Normal from page 7
for window shoppers and idle plutocrats waiting for the tables to clear. Instead, the bakers have gone fishing and chefs are in the deep rough, looking for a golf ball that could conceivably claim to be theirs.
I could swear and could almost believe that the New Normal will remain after we have stashed our masks in the sock drawer or repurposed them into napkins. The way we lived pre-pandemic, rushing from one frustrated customer to the other, was a short trip to the hospital and retirement. A year without family (or locked inside with it) should give us all a moment to reconsider how valuable the Tuesday Night 9 pm seating really is. At the beach, the late afternoon has become more valuable. After the young and firm have climbed onto their bikes and gone for a brewery tour, the olds slip onto the beach. On Tuesday evening, after I woke up under a book, the Miss Porter’s Ladies Lacrosse team to my right had been replaced by a crew of six Honduran house painters, complete with work boots, towels, and pizza. On my left, a restaurant owner of renown sat on a beach chair in front of a grill, with grandchildren tumbling in the surf, children in chairs, and a pint glass filled with something pink. For those moments, he held time firmly in his hand while money slipped away. The best lesson of the pandemic might be that our only true currency is time. We pay for everything in minutes, hours, and days.

A Berry Good Season from page 12
while rambling in the moors. As July wanes and August looms, a new set of fruit will ripen. Beach plums, rose hips, and eventually fox grapes will be visible (if you know where to look). While delicious and plentiful, the fruit of August and September usually needs processing to enjoy. Jams, jellies, and fruit pies are usually in order. That said, I prefer the lazy berries of July. While taking a walk I can just reach out and have a sweet summer treat warm from the sun. It’s a gift from nature and I am truly thankful for this mid-summer ambrosia. Remember that in addition to us, the local wildlife also enjoy and rely on these berries during the summer months. Birds, small mammals, and even deer relish this summer bounty. Notes on harvesting/foraging: Do not eat anything unless you are positive of the identification or you have been shown by an expert. Only take what you will eat and/or process. Never take all of anything. The fruit is how the plant survives. It is also important to leave some for the local wildlife. Be careful of the plants. It’s the berries you are after: please don’t trample or damage the plants you’re harvesting from. We want to take care of the plants that are feeding us. Be aware of property ownership. Make sure you have permission to harvest on the property you are on. Each conservation group has different rules about harvesting and foraging. Be mindful of these rules. Don’t pick near the poison ivy! I have been berry-blinded myself and jumped right in before realizing there was poison ivy in the mix. Be aware of your surroundings. Have fun! For resources on trails all around Nantucket, visit any of the above-mentioned conservation groups’ websites for local maps. You can also check out Walking Nantucket by Peter Brace, available locally at Mitchell’s Book Corner and Nantucket Bookworks.

Many of our generous donors have come to love dance because of the dance festival.” “The choice to make it a public event was due to the support of our donors, who really want poeple to have opportunities to see the dance performances,” added Atheneum Executive Director Ann Scott. Giving out free tickets to a primary component of a fundraiser does bring a few questions to mind. The Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival is their major fundraiser: unlike many public libraries, the Atheneum must raise 75% of its annual operating budget. Donations are accepted at nantucketatheneum.org, and Weinroth explained that major Atheneum Dance Festival sponsors get tickets to performances and to behind-the-scenes events with the artistic team. “Plus, after each performance, a champagne evening reception will be hosted at the Atheneum. We want our donors to have a chance to get to see each other again… that will be such a joy. And a party will be held at a private Nantucket estate.” “It makes my heart glad,” added Ann Scott, “that we can juggle the need to raise all this funding with our mission to give access to all.” As of our press date, the Dance Festival performance tickets are nearly all claimed. If you have reserved seats but cannot use your tickets, contact the Development Office at the Atheneum at 508-228-1110, x114. And if you’d like to make a donation or become a sponsor to help the Nantucket Atheneum continue its mission, please visit NantucketAtheneum.org or call 508-228-1110.
