June 23 - 29, 2016

NFF Turns 21 For more than two decades, Nantucket has been the venue for a festival designed to promote the awareness and appreciation of screenwriting. This week through June 27, screenwriters, actors, producers, agents, and fans will gather on our island for the 21st Annual Nantucket Film Festival. Films that have premiered at past NFF celebrations have gone on to become audience favorites, including The Full Monty, Inside Out, Boyhood, Beasts Tallulah of the Southern Wild, Next Stop Wonderland, Whale Rider, and Winter’s Bone. NFF audiences love being able to say “Oh, I saw that already on Nantucket.” In addition to films, NFF has a slate of stimulating and entertaining conversations, panels, parties, awards, and storytelling events. New this year is a Virtual Reality experience held in the Legacy Lounge. For the full festival schedule, festival passes, and tickets, visit nantucketfilmfestival.org. Many NFF films and events sell out, but there are “will call” lines for most events. Goat

Walk the Walk, Then Talk the Talk

Three years ago staff and volunteers at A Safe Place Nantucket first asked men on the island to strap on some heels, buckle up some boots, or slip into some stilettos and walk a mile to raise awareness and funds to help combat domestic violence. This Sunday, June 26 at 10 am, caring men and their families will again walk the 1 mile route from Children’s Beach to town, up Main Street, down Centre, and back to Children’s Beach. “It’s not easy to walk in these shoes, but it’s fun and will help the Nantucket community think and talk about some difficult issues: gender relations

by Amy Jenness For centuries Nantucket mariners used the ocean as a global superhighway that took them away on business ventures to almost every continent. But when the United States entered World War I, the island’s culture of the sea shifted to the sky. The months around the April 1917 announcement of war were tumultuous ones. German submarines attacked ships all along the east coast, with some occurring within miles of Nantucket. The US Navy took control the local lightships and the Marconi wireless station in Siasconset. It also expanded its Chatham base on Cape Cod and by Photo courtesy US Library of Congress. NANTUCKET

Out on the Water with Shearwater Excursions by Sarah Morneau Nantucket is surrounded by water, but how often do you think about the ocean, its sea life, and how it shaped the island into what it is today? In the summer it is easy to get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of traffic, dinner reservations, and obligations, and take for granted how beautiful of a place this island is, and how fortunate we are to experience it. Early one morning I was able to escape the office and get out on the water with Shearwater Excursions, before the crowds and humidity arrived for the day. I walked down the Straight Wharf docks and met the Shearwater team at their slip. I was heading out on their Whaling History Tour, aboard the Minke. After I grabbed a coffee (included with the tour) I boarded the boat and we headed out into the sparkling harbor. The Minke is a comfortable and quiet boat that seats 23 passengers. The red and white canopy keeps you sheltered from the hot sun, and the wraparound seating insures that everyone gets a good view. There are railings along all sides, so parents don’t have to worry about their little ones leaning too far over the edge. Captain Blair Perkins was at the helm that day, and as he expertly guided us through the water on the Minke he told us about the history of the harbor and of whaling days gone by. The viewpoint from the boat lends a different perspective to the docks and town, and helps you imagine what things may have looked like during the great Whaling Era. He points out the historical landmarks that still exist today, and where the whaleship Essex would have been docked back in its time. As we round Brant Point Lighthouse, we get a history of the lighthouse, a landmark that almost all of us encounter when coming to and from the island, but don’t know much about.

Every Sunday, at 11:30, I realize I am late for church. I come by this feeling honestly. My family came to St. Marie Goretti’s late as a regular habit, so much so that the Pastor had the wise idea that if he made my father a Reader, we would arrive on time. Faced with the prospect of an audience for his sonorous tenor, my father made sure we were all out the door on time and sitting in the first pew to the left of the altar. For our part, we wanted that pew, since it meant that we would be the first ones downstairs for the donuts. My parents steeped me in the church. I went to CCD in elementary school and then went to the St. Joseph’s School on Saturday to be educated in the catechism. My mother considered that a good start, to be followed up by several years as an altar boy and, had she and fortune had their way, four years at B.C. High or Malden Catholic. As with so many of my mother’s dreams, money got in the way, and I was forced to get a superior education at the local high school among the pagan. I slipped away from the Holy Mother Church in college and didn’t fully come back. They stopped serving free donuts, and life kept interfering with my Sundays. When I was younger, I would return to church for the occasional wedding, and now, in my middle age, I return for that far grimmer Holy Mass. Each time I return, I find some of the peace that my parents must have felt. The mass doesn’t change, leastwise since they stopped saying it in Latin and let the priest face the parishioners. Each service follows the same beats I learned when I was wearing a cassock and surplice. Stand, kneel, sit, and ring the bells when you are supposed to. Of course, the prayers are the same. The Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Apostle’s Creed repeated over and over Sunday after Sunday, year after year, baptism to funeral. You don’t silently say those prayers, you speak them along with everyone around you, so the churchgoers create one giant chanting mob. Or they would have if we hadn’t been there. My father had a habit of speaking slightly faster than everyone else, as if he has to prove that he knew the words and had to lead the rest of us. His children, all fruit of the pagan and godless public schools, made up our own words for the prayers or said them in funny accents. Whoever stood near my mother would get “the bite” with her annoyed fingers. These days, on summer Sundays, I find myself in the Quaker Meeting House when my life allows and the doors are open. The Society of Friends is about as far from the Roman Catholic Church as you can get and still call yourself Christian. No prayers, no songs, no funny stained glass, and no snacks. You sit on 150 year old benches, look at white walls for an hour, and say nothing. A Quaker Meeting has two basic rules: sit down and shut up. I first went to a Quaker Meeting when my boys were very young and very loud. If one wasn't shouting, the other was, and if both were silent, Thomas The Tank Engine was trying to be a very useful engine. When I wasn’t a father, I was in a classroom talking a lot and listening far less. So, I had no idea what to do with an hour of silence. Nobody needed to talk to me and I didn't need to talk to anyone. We sat in quiet until the town clock struck the hour, then St. Paul’s and the Quaker Meeting let out. It was great. You forget how noisy and pushy our world is. Someone

In the age of technology, I believe it’s appropriate to begin our family excursions with geocaching. What exactly is geocaching? It is just like an old school treasure hunt! Using your smartphone, download the free Geocaching app and enter your location. There are geocaches all over, but the ones with the best views are right here on Nantucket. It will bring you to a map of our little island. You will notice different colored dots. The dark green dots are free geocaching locations and all other colors require an updated version. There are over twenty free geocaching locations here! I am new to geocaching so I spent some time discovering all that the app had to offer. Navigating the app: Once you click on a dot it brings you some details about the location with the attainable geocache. There is a brief description of the location and what the hot spot has to offer, from views of trails to even a little history about the location. In addition, there is information about the level of difficulty when searching for the treasure. The terrain is listed too and is set on a scale of zero to five, five being the most difficult. You can also gage how long the hunt will take according to how many miles away the geocache is from the start. Another fun element is the size of the geocaches. Medium might be a shoebox and small might be a sandwich box. If you absolutely need it there may be hints to help you along your way while hunting. My favorite part of the Geocaching app is the log. When you find the booty you get to brag about it in the log by stating that you found the cache and you can comment about your journey too. I recently went geocaching at Tupancy Links, which is on the north side of the island with excellent views of Nantucket Sound from the bluff and long, winding walking trails. As a new mom, I decided to go with my seven-monthold son and some friends. The first hurdle I came upon was walking through the entrance of Tupancy with my jogging stroller. It didn’t fit! Next time I bring my son, I plan on using a baby carrier. Tupancy is a typical place I would take my dog and let her frolic through the field, so this geocache is dog friendly! The app’s description of the terrain informed me of that as well. Opening up to the Geocache app to a map and pushing the start arrow, I began my search! On the bottom of the screen are coordinates and the number of feet you are from your destination. As we walked along the path we noticed the number growing and shirking, as we got farther away then closer. The level of difficulty was a one, the terrain was 1.5, and the geocache was small. We thought we had this in the bag! After some trial and error, we came close enough to our find that it was no longer in the hands of our app, but in the eye of the beholder. We curiously searched our surroundings until I spotted my very first geocache! I will not tell you where or how, but it is there and it was exciting.

Pairing Wine with Films by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Wine has played an integral part in numerous hit films. Whether it is a story that revolves around life in a vineyard, as part of a romantic comedy of wine drinkers. or a supporting role based on brand placements or verbal references in movies, wine and the lifestyle that revolves around it makes for a very interesting story. A movie should be able to transport you to another time or place and allow you to feel the emotions of the characters in the film. What better backdrop for a love story than one that revolves around a winery? A Walk in the Clouds (1995) tells the story of a young man traveling home after World War II who encounters a beautiful young woman heading home from college to help her family at their vineyard in Napa Valley during harvest. The soldier (Paul) learns that the lady (Victoria) is pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend, so he decides to stand in as her husband so that she can face her domineering father. With plans then to leave quietly in the night to go about his way, Paul is encouraged by Victoria’s grandfather to stay and help with the harvest. What Is This? by Katherine Brooks Maria Mitchell Association Volunteer What is black and orange and has six legs? Nicrophorus americanus, commonly known as the American burying beetle. American burying beetle is striking with sleek black & orange wing markings, and acts as nature’s recycler. Nantucket is the site of the only successful reintroduction of the species. The American burying beetle has even received attention from Jane Goodall in her book, Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species are Being Rescued from the Brink. Goodall describes the beetle as the “linchpin of the ecosystem: “There are stories where one little insect [like the American burying beetle] becomes extinct, and it doesn't seem to matter. But then it turns out that was a major food source for another creature. So, gradually, there's a chain reaction, and you can have an entire ecosystem collapse just because one piece was taken out, and we didn't realize what that would do. “ The American burying beetle is federally listed as endangered. Before making it onto the Endangered Species List, the beetle was common throughout the eastern half of the United States, but now only survives in a few remote habitats. The Seinfeld Series Returns to TWN Need to refine your acting skills? Interested in a behind-the-scenes look at producing theater? This July and August, the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket is bringing back The Seinfeld Series: Master Classes in Theatre and Performance, an exciting educational program open to the public. All three sessions (July 9, August 6 and 20) are free, but because seating is limited, tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. The Seinfeld Series supports the mission of Theatre Workshop by introducing neighbors, friends, colleagues and audiences to the theatre, its productions, resources and initiatives. Plus, it’s a way for TWN to thank supporters for years of encouragement, support, participation and applause. The Seinfeld Series was conceived by Judith Seinfeld, a long-standing supporter and member of the Theatre Workshop board. Seinfeld has long been a devoted advocate of theater and is the creative engine behind the Seinfeld Series as a benefit to the friends of the Theatre Workshop. “The series will implement a “thank you” to all people on Nantucket loving the theater. We expect the Seinfeld Series to be a highly successful program for our organization” said Seinfeld. “As we celebrate our 60th Anniversary this season, we will continue the tradition of sharing this art form not only through mainstage performances, but by exploring artistic opportunities that feed the soul and stimulate our

senses,” explained Justin Cerne, Artistic Director at Theatre Workshop. “We have designed these events to bring our community together without solicitation throughout the entire island by providing workshops, classes, dialogue and programs to increase our community’s theatrical participation,”said Cerne. “The Seinfeld Series will be an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of the Nantucket arts community,” added Theatre Workshop Managing Director Jonathan Jensen. “This year we’ve selected three speakers that will bring unique experiences and philosophies to our stages. We dedicated to shaping the vision of how theater can transform a community and enrich the life of our island.” Three partners have agreed to share their work with Theatre Workshop for these free Saturday morning events: Mark Robbins, President and CEO of the American Academy in Rome; Paul Binder, Founding Artistic Director of the Big Apple Circus; and the entire creative team of Annie Get Your Gun and The Full Monty. Free tickets to The Seinfeld Series three sessions, July 9, August 6, and August 20, must be reserved through the Theatre Workshop Box Office at theatreworkshop.com or by calling 508-228-4305.

the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Roger Williams Park Zoo to reintroduce the beetles to the island. The last record of an American burying beetle on Nantucket was in 1926 and after reintroduction; the population is back up to and estimated fifty to seventy beetles each summer. The American burying beetle is the largest and rarest of its species. These beetles need carrion (dead animal flesh, such as quail or rats) for reproduction. The beetles smell out the carrion, bury it underground, and lay eggs in it. They raise up to thirty new beetles this way. What makes these beetles stand out from most insects is that they provide bi-parental care. The parent beetles take care of their young and help feed them until the young are ready to burrow into the soil to morph into adults. What brought about the demise of this unique beetle? Scientist are unsure, but theories include the extinction of the passenger pigeon (a perfectly sized bird for this beetle), insecticides, an increase in mammal scavengers, and increases in artificial light at night. Despite these ongoing threats to the American burying beetle’s survival and recent efforts by oil and gas development corporations to remove conservation protections, there is a recovery plan—and Nantucket is at the forefront of brining these beetles back. Nantucket’s lack of mammal scavengers and abundance of birds makes the island a perfect place for reintroduction. And it is important that humans work to save this species. While other beetle species also recycle carrion in the same way the American burying beetle does, losing this beetle species could further weaken struggling ecosystems. “Having redundancy in nature, animals and plants that do the same things and use the same resources, provides resilience. And as climate changes, the environment needs to be resilient to survive,” says Andrew McKenna-Foster, the Maria Mitchell Association’s Director of Natural Science. In 2006, the Roger Williams Park Zoo began rearing hundreds of the American burying beetles in captivity for reintroduction. This species is very inexpensive to work with and the original rearing facility was a converted men’s restroom facility at the Zoo. For a few thousand dollars a year, the Zoo was producing about 500 beetles annually. The reintroduction of one large mammal, like an individual wolf or oryx, can cost well over $10,000. Since the start of the Nantucket reintroduction program, the population on Nantucket has been monitored and tracked. Zoo staff and Maria Mitchell Association interns, trap, weigh, measure, and tag beetles, and then release them. On the east side of Nantucket, there are sixty traps throughout twelve sites on land owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. The traps are simple: glass jars set in a hole in the ground with rotting chicken (to simulate carrion) and a sponge to provide moisture. The holes are covered with wire to keep out crows and other animals and foil to keep out the rain. Everyday for about twelve to fourteen days in June, McKenna-Foster and his team go out daily to check the traps. They count the number and types of beetles in the trap, but are really looking to collect any American burying beetles. The beetles are cared for in the Natural Science Museum until late June when the males and females are paired and then buried with a quail carcass. The quail provisions help keep the beetle populations high, but to test whether the population is self-sustaining, McKenna-Foster and his team have reduced the amount of quail provided from over 100 to less than twenty-five. By reducing the quail carrion, the team has recorded a significant decrease continued on page 14

in the beetle population suggesting this population is dependent on human assistance. Even with the drop in population, this collaborative effort between Nantucket nonprofits, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Roger Williams Park Zoo has led to the “most successful reintroduction of this species on planet Earth” according to McKenna-Foster. The reintroduction of these beetles has come with challenges such as unknown amounts of available carrion on Nantucket, problems estimating the re-introduction population size, and a short active-season, which can be greatly affected by weather. Despite these obstacles, what is particularly important is the dedication that this team of scientists has toward this project. June 2016 started this year’s active season for the burying beetles. The photograph shows Lou Perrotti (Director of Conservation Programs at the Roger Williams Park Zoo); Andrew McKenna-Foster; and MMA intern and senior at Earlham College, Elisabeth Sorrows, counting beetles at one of the twelve trapping sites on Nantucket. Perrotti spearheaded the American burying beetle reintroduction program, which has been flourishing for twentytwo years, and he continues to teach young scientists, like Sorrows, the importance of helping this indispensable part of the ecosystem. Nantucket may be small, but the island is doing great things for conservation through its local nonprofits such as the Maria Mitchell Association. Scientists, such as Lou Perrotti, are dedicated to learning more about the creatures we share planet

Earth with. Perrotti recently discussed the importance of the American burying beetle project and preserving this delicate part of our ecosystem during the Maria Mitchell Association Science Speaker Series that features a different speaker every Wednesday night at 7pm at 33 Washington Street. The MMA was founded in 1902 to preserve the legacy of Maria Mitchell and to promote her belief in learning-by-doing. An astronomer and natural scientist, as well as an educator, Maria Mitchell shot to worldwide fame when she discovered a comet in 1846. For her discovery, she was awarded a gold medal from the King of Denmark – the first American and first woman to receive the honor. She served as the Professor of Astronomy and Mathematics at Vassar College from 1865 until 1888. Today, the MMA operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and the birthplace of Maria Mitchell. The MMA conducts scientific research, leads classes and workshops for people of all ages yearround, and welcomes thousands of visitors to its museums and observatories. beeps you, or updates you, or tugs on your arm, or yells in your face from coffee until nightcap and often beyond. I suppose I should listen for the Word of God in my soul or transcend my daily existence, but I always wind up daydreaming and walking back through the week. Most of the time, it isn’t a pretty stroll. It involves too much cowardice, avoidance, and candy. Had I returned to Holy Mother Church, the priest would give me five Hail Mary’s and the South Beach Diet, and I could leave cleansed and fresh. Instead, I shake hands after an hour and walk out into the world I soiled. The hard core O.G. Quakers didn’t use the Bible. To them, if God wanted to say something to you, He would pull you by the ear for a little “Yahweh would like a word and fill you in, one-on-one. Nonetheless, the urge to write proves hard to resist, and the Quakers indulged it to write down questions. To examine your life, they asked “Queries to which you would silently answer and stew over. For example, they asked “How are you mending the world? I am twenty years too old to lie to myself and call it honor. I don’t do enough to mend the world, although I do more than recycle my beer bottles and pizza boxes. But mending the world doesn’t require dramatic acts to sew up the ripped seams of our society. It just asks for a stitch here and there, a thought before you start tearing, and a willingness to do something even if it seems too small to matter. One person standing in the face of a milling mob doesn’t do much, but it’s a start. In this time when we can buy guns more easily than we can buy Sudafed, we rip our world up by the clip. From Sandy Hook to San Bernadino to St. Maria Goretti, we are asked to pray, and I understand prayer. It soothes and settles us back into the pattern of a life. But sometimes, I would like people to forget their prayers, settle onto a bench in the Quaker Meeting House, and find themselves in the silence of white walls. How are we mending the world?

time, which established a market for intercontinental airship travel that lasted until tragic explosion of the Hindenberg in 1937. Nantucketers experienced their first dirigible visit in 1918. The Inquirer & Mirror published this report: “The big air-craft sailed gracefully across the Sound, and when it hovered over Wauwinet it took a straight course down the harbor, being overhead at noon and giving the islanders who were aware of its approach an excellent view of it, as at one time it was flying only about 300 feet high. The dirigible sailed around over the harbor, made a couple of long sweeps, and then went over towards Brant point, following the shore line along, sometimes moving rapidly and sometimes slowly, rising and falling as the aviators put it through the different experimental tests. The balloon followed the north shore of the island and gradually passed out of sight to the westward. In those early years, local dirigibles experienced crashes and malfunctions and Nantucket boats were called upon to rescue their crews. But the navy continued and Nantucket was often in the mix as a destination and support base. In 1924 a small fleet of navy seaplanes and the tender Patoka spent a month anchored at Nantucket while pilots trained with the dirigible Shenandoah off shore. And, in January of 1925 the navy flew a dirigible over Nantucket during an eclipse of the sun to take observations. Germany, which pioneered the airship technology and used it effectively in the war, gave the United States dirigibles as part of their war reparations. One ship, the 654 foot Los Angeles, was sent to Nantucket annually in the early 1930s to assist calibration efforts at the US Radio Compass Station at Surfside, located in the former Lifesaving Station. The compass station emitted a radio signal for passing ships to use for navigation. The Inquirer & Mirror reported on the visit 1931 visit, “From the south tower, Wednesday morning, we saw a sight which we had never seen before: Four lightships could be discerned in the offing, three steamers were ploughing their way through the sound, a fleet of quahaug boats were at work on continued on page 23

the beds near Tuckernuck shoal, and over from the northwest came a speedy Navy plane, while a little farther to the westward the big dirigible Los Angeles glistened in the sun-light. But there was not a schooner in sight anywhere!” In 1929 the New York Times ran a feature story on the historic round-theworld flight of the German dirigible Graf Zeppelin under the headline “From Nantucket to the Urals and From Tomsk to Tokio.” The Nantucket wireless station was the ship’s last American point of contact before it headed across the sea on its historic run. Backed by newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, the Graf Zeppelin left Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey on August 7 and flew around the world, making it the first successful trans-Atlantic flight ever made. Over the next eight years the Zeppelin Company set the standard for intercontinental travel and flew more than 1,056,000 miles, made 590 flights, and carried 13,110 passengers. Germans airships were designed to be lifted by helium gas, which is not flammable. But America controlled access to most of the world’s helium supply and banned its exportation in 1927. The Germans used hydrogen instead, which is lighter than helium, but also ignites easily. On May 6, 1937 the German dirigible Hindenberg caught fire and exploded while trying to dock in New Jersey. The accident killed 37 people and images of its fiery demise in newspapers and on movie newsreels shocked the world. The public lost its desire for commercial dirigible air travel and the huge airships never gained their foothold back. The navy’s last Nantucket dirigible mission occurred in 1938 when a ship named TC-1J passed over the town flying so low that a man could be seen waving a handkerchief from one of the windows. It circled around for the morning while it calibrated with the compass station and then flew to Martha’s Vineyard. The island’s brief involvement with dirigibles had ended, but Nantucketers, and the nation, had caught the bug for aviation. In 1918, The town built a pier for seaplanes to tie up. In 1927 the island’s first airport opened in Tom Nevers and offered commercial air service to Boston. Today, the Nantucket Memorial Airport is one of the busiest airports in the state and on peak days can record more landings and take offs than Boston’s Logan Airport. Geocaching from page 9

A sample of a geocaching box

Once you find the geocache, there are a few things you must do. You must bring an item to place in the container in order to take an item from the container, you can also sign the logbook inside the container, and then place the geocache back exactly how you found it. There are all sorts of trinkets inside, just like a treasure hunt! You also need to log that you found the geocache on the app and it is marked with a smiley face on your map, which is a very rewarding feeling I might add. Mission accomplished! Remember to charge your cell phone, watch for poison ivy, wear sunblock and bug spray, and check for ticks. You should also try and remember to bring a pen because more than likely, there will not be one in the container for you to sign the logbook with. Happy Geocaching!

and men’s sexual violence against women.” Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the men and boys, particularly along Main Street, where they will navigate the cobblestones. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® was created in 2001 by rape crisis volunteer Frank Baird, and has grown into an international effort with tens of thousands of men worldwide raising money for local programs. According to event organizers, “...For preventive education, it helps men better understand and appreciate women’s experiences, thus changing perspectives, helping improve gender relationships and decreasing the potential for violence. For healing, it informs the community that services are available for recovery. It demonstrates that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making the world a safer place.“ It’s further described by the international organization as “a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to men's sexualized violence against women.” As men and boys walk in high-heeled shoes through the streets of Nantucket, they are also raising money for A Safe Place, whose goal is to eliminate and fight the battle against domestic violence on Nantucket. Men have the option of walking solo, or with a team of friends, family, or co-workers. High-heeled shoes will not be provided; but event staff will have decorated women’s flip-flops available to walkers who don’t have heels. If participants would like to fully embrace a woman’s lifestyle, dressing up is entertaining and amusing for all of the walkers! Participants can register on the day of the event at 10 am before 10:30 am start, or can register in advance online at crowdrise.com/walkamileinhershoesnantucket. There is a required $20 donation for each individual along with a suggested $100 fundraising fee per walker; higher donations are appreciated and strongly encouraged. Raindate is Monday, June 27. All proceeds will go directly to A Safe Place on Nantucket. Show the women in your life that you care enough to walk in their shoes!

Featured Restaurant: The Ships Inn

Perfect from First Bite to Last It occurred to me when I started writing this week’s featured restaurant that I could probably sum up our experience with just a single word: WOW! But that would not give you any detail on how very good Chef-Owner Mark Gottwald’s food tasted or how warmly welcomed long-time manager Bob Moulder made us feel or what a fine job Melissa did serving our table. For the second year in a row, our meal at this restaurant was a homerun— perfect from the first nibbles of warm Ships Inn rolls and cinnamon baguette to the final spoonfuls of raspberry souffle drenched in creme anglaise. From the moment you enter The Ships Inn on Fair Street, you are surrounded by Nantucket history. The building it occupies, along with the inn upstairs also run by the Gottwalds, was once the home of Captain Obed Starbuck, famous for his record-breaking success in whaling. The lower Grilled Sea Scallops level restaurant is divided into a main dining room and the less formal Dory Bar, with the same menu served in both. We were seated in our favorite corner of the main dining room, under the row of windows that look out onto one of their several gardens. (Take a peek out the window behind the Dory Bar: there’s even a garden in that subterranean view.) Tables are beautifully set with classic style—crisp linens, silver, candles and fresh flowers—your first indication that this truly is a fine dining establishment. Everything served at The Ships Inn is made in-house from the freshest ingredients. Chef Gottwald was classically trained and has spent years honing his skills, but it takes inborn talent to cook as he does. Each of his dishes has layers of intense flavor. He knows just when to add a sauce and how to use restraint in doing so. And his presentations and accompaniments are well-thought out and beautifully designed, with an eye for color and texture as impressive as his talent for pairing flavors His cool and summery Jumbo Lump Blue Crab and Kale Salad is sophisticated without being self-conscious. The Vegetarian Risotto chopped purple

kale is tender and tossed with plump golden raisins, roasted beets, and a subtle yogurt and marscarpone dressing with a hint of lemon. On top is a generous serving of crab meat in very large sweet pieces, chilled and topped with a curry remoulade that adds vibrant color and flavor, yet lets the delicate crab shine through. If you like clams, you’ll fall in love with the Clams Broiled “Croute Herb. For this sensational starter, Chef Gottwald shucks tiny littlenecks, places them back on the half shell and tops them with garlic herb butter and bread crumbs. He then broils them just till the butter melts and the crumbs turn golden. The clams emerge very lightly cooked with an appealingly crunchy topping. Without all the extras typical of clams casino, in this dish you can really taste the clams.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Vol. 46 No. 7 • Our 46th Season!

The third seafood appetizer we tasted and adored is the Grilled Sea Scallops. The scallops are elegantly presented in a large scallop shell with a single colorful flower — the aromas of butter, smoke, and truffles combine to capture the attention of all at our table (and at the table next to Rigatoni with Duck Bolognese us). Grilling enhances the sweetness of the scallops. The lobster vinaigrette underneath and the hollandaise studded with bits of black truffle overtop make this appetizer irresistible. The robust and enticing Vegetarian Risotto can be ordered as an appetizer or as an entree. There’s a garden of flavor in this dish: fresh herbs are stirred into the creamy risotto along with diced carrot, leeks, mushrooms, asparagus, and tomato. Draped over the rice are broad grilled slices of zucchini, summer squash, and eggplant, with a delectable summery char. Fresh herbs and the bright flavor of garden-fresh tomato take the reigns in Chef Gottwald’s Rigatoni with Duck Bolognese. We thought this dish might be heavy for a summer menu, but no. The shreds and juicy pieces of duck meat are enveloped in a sauce that tastes of summer sunshine. Hearty, but lighter than steak (which is also excellent here) is the Veal Scallopini Citron, one of our favorite dishes. The veal, pounded thin, is forktender with deliciously crisp edges and is served in a deeply flavorful, rich sauce studded with capers and brightened with citrus. Think of veal piccata with rich veal stock added to the sauce. YUM! A tangle of homemade fettuccine (spinach and egg) is served alongside with two quenelles—one of broccoli and one of carrot—that add bright color and intensely fresh flavor. You will never go wrong ordering fish at The Ships Inn. Chef Gottwald is

a master at preparing fruit de mer. If Grilled Swordfish is offered as an special as it was the evening we spent at Ships Inn, don’t hesitate to order it!

Grilled Swordfish

The meaty swordfish steak was fresh from the dock, moist, and deliciously charred from the grill. Nantucket’s fresh garden harvest was paired with this bounty from the sea, with lemongrass and braised leeks served on top of the swordfish, tender-crisp asparagus and carrots served alongside with a tasty, golden brown artichoke and potato gratin. It was the Paillard of Wild King Salmon that stole the show. We have never had salmon this good! Sparklingly fresh and handled with the expertise of a very talented chef, the salmon was simply seasoned, grilled, and served on a dark, potent sauce of balsamic vinegar reduced with malbec to soften it and add depth of flavor. Alongside the salmon is herbed brown rice and a fun and colorful vegetable spring roll truly made with just vegetables. Don’t skip dessert at The Ships Inn—just don’t! As full as we were entering into the final course, we couldn’t resist finishing every last bite, each dessert was that good. We had ordered the souffle, of course—you don’t dine at The Ships Inn without someone at your table ordering the Souffle of the Evening. The night we were there it was Raspberry: tall, fluffy, and delicious, served with creme anglaise good enough to drink from the pitcher. Pastry Chef Matt Ames’ Flourless Chocolate Souffle Cake is back on the menu this season, its deep, dark chocolate flavor set off with pistachio ice cream and white and dark chocolate sauces. The two desserts we were still raving about the next day were the housemade Blueberry Ice Cream that somehow captured the deliciousness of fresh summer berries in a frozen treat, and the Cappucino Creme Brulee that is a coffee lover’s dream captured in a perfectly executed creme brulee. Good thing they used decaf, because we devoured every bit. For a marvelous meal prepared with passion in an intimate, historic setting, spend an evening at the Ships Inn. This is the perfect spot to make memories to savor. ery tasting room the next day. The ladies happen to be acquaintances, so a double date is arranged and the plot thickens from there. Drinking wine in wine country can lead to some entertaining scenarios! Known as the movie that bashed Merlot and made Pinot Noir more famous, the tongue-in-cheek ending is best paired with your favorite red from the Santa Ynez Valley. As for somewhat of a wine history documentary, Bottle Shock (2008) is based on a true story of the 1976 wine tasting competition later referred to as “The Judgement of Paris.” It tells the tale of Stephen Spurrier, a British expat who lived in Paris and was the owner of a bottle shop. In order to save his business, he wanted to show Parisians that quality wines could come from countries other than France. He decided to put together a blind wine tasting that would pit American wines against what were considered the best of the French wines. In the film, he travels to Napa Valley to find the best wines from California that he can use in his tasting against the French wines. This is where he meets Jim Barrett, owner of Chateau Montelena. Barrett is not interested in participating in the competition as he thinks it is a set-up to embarrass the New World producers. Barrett’s son, Bo, however, gives Spurrier a couple bottles of the winery’s Chardonnay to be used in the tasting. Amongst all the twists and turns in the plot (some fictional and some fact) that lead to the contest itself, Bo travels to Paris to represent the Napa Valley vintners at the event. Once the scores are tallied, it shows that Montelena did indeed win the Chardonnay competition. In essence, what resulted from Spurrier’s event was that the wine scene of Napa Valley would be forever changed. This same exact blind wine tasting was held again thirty years later… and the results remained the same. Bo Barrett was the assistant winemaker at the time of the first tasting and has been at the helm as current winemaker at Chateau Montelena for decades now. He made his first trip last year to Nantucket. Meeting him in person and tasting his wines together over lunch, you realize how much Bo is committed to and passionate about his grape growing and winemaking. While he is considered a celebrity, a star winemaker, Bo talks about being a farmer and the work he does with his hands when you ask him about the premise of the film. Watch this movie with a bottle of Chateau Montelena’s world famous Chardonnay and a tub of buttered popcorn.

Books & Publications On This Day in Nantucket History

by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island

Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.

I have to say, I learned a lot during my hour-long tour, the Captain’s knowledge of Nantucket history and enthusiasm for the island is contagious. As we docked back at the slip, I disembarked feeling like I have a new appreciation for the island and its history. My husband and I went out on our boat a few days later, and as we left the harbor I found myself pointing out historical details to him that I had learned on the cruise. The Whaling History Tour was introduced last year as new trip for Shearwater Excursions, inspired by the book and movie In the Heart of the Sea. Blair and Rachael Perkins noticed families with young children on the docks early in the morning, looking for something to do. The parents were often blearyeyed and tired, up before they want to be while on vacation, which brought about the coffee portion of the cruise. Getting out on the water in the calm quiet of morning with a cup of coffee in hand, and learning about the history of the island is a great way to start the day. Shearwater Excursions is a family-run business, started by Blair and Rachael Perkins in 1999. Blair grew up on Nantucket, on a farm out in Polpis,

and has always been interested in the natural world around him. The couple had traveled extensively through Mexico and Costa Rica, taking eco-tours at each place they went. Hosting their own eco-tours on Nantucket seemed like an ideal fit and filled a niche that was missing on the island, and so Shearwater Excursions was born. Captain Blair has over 40 years of experience as a commercial fisherman, boat captain, and naturalist. He has helped researchers with their projects, and loves sharing the wildlife and beauty of Nantucket with others. Rachael is the hard-drive of the business, she handles all of the reservations and event planning, as well as the advertising and promotion of the company. While Blair is usually out on one of the boats, you can find Rachael under the blue umbrella at their slip on Straight Wharf. At the time of its founding, Rachael and Blair’s children were ages 9, 6, and 2. Sons Max and Alex, and daughter Renee grew up in the business and today hold crucial roles within the company. Max and Alex both have their captain’s license and assist with hosting tours and driving the boats. Renee is the communications expert, handling all the social media accounts and she also assists on the docks and as a crew member on board. Max and Alex also own and operate Flyboard Nantucket. Shearwater Excursions hosts numerous tours throughout the season. The Whaling History Tour, Harbor Tour/Ice Cream Cruise, Sunset Cruise, Kids Fishing Trips, and Clamming Excursions run on a daily basis. The Whale Watch runs on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Their Seal Cruise sets out on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. They also hold private events aboard both the Minke and the Shearwater, depending on your party size, and are happy to cater a tour to your needs.
