Connecting the Island with Laughter
Fifteen years ago comedian Kevin Flynn saw the need to inspire Nantucket’s youth after a rash of teen suicides here in 2007. Knowing there is healing power in laughter, he spearheaded an educational program designed to teach students how to perform stand-up, and he provided comedy lessons. Flynn’s program, called Stand Up & Learn™, is now a nationally-acclaimed comedy education program for youth ages 8 to 18 that uses laughter to empower, engage, and inspire. In order to perpetuate the good work of the nascent Stand Up & Learn™ program, he reached out to friends in the comedy world and to organize a fundraiser: the annual Nantucket Comedy Festival. This Wednesday, July 13, the Nantucket Comedy Festival opens it’s 14th year with the world premiere of Nantucket Nights: A Filmed Special Featuring Don Gavin showing in the Dreamland Theatre. Gavin, the Godfather of Boston Comedy, filmed his first ever television special here on Nantucket last Christmas Stroll. Watch the hilarious final edit, plus live opening comedy by Boston comic and festival favorite, Jimmy Dunn. After the special, there will be a live Q & A with Don Gavin, Jimmy Dunn, Director Dan Driscoll and Comedy Festival Executive Director, Kevin Flynn. You don't want to miss this comedy legend in action! Comedy Festival 2022 continues on Thursday at 8 pm with the ever-popular Ladies' Night. Nationally headlining comediennes Tammy Pescatelli, Marla Schultz, Bernadette Pauley and Carolyn Plummer bring their lively talents to the Dreamland Stage for a hilarious evening designed for both for ladies and for gentlemen, so make it a date night or bring your friends.

A Revolutionary Show photo by Kit Noble
This Friday, July 8, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket brings to summer audiences a special show that Broadwayworld described as “like going to a musical and a concert.” We Will Rock You follows two revolutionaries as they try to save rock’n’roll in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s a fist-pumping, foot-stomping anthem to individuality, featuring live music and twenty fantastic voices on the TWN stage. One of the longest running shows ever to play London’s West End, We Will Rock You includes more than 20 hit songs by Queen. Performed in Bennett Hall at 62 Centre Street, the show lasts approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are available at theatrenantucket.org and by calling the box office Tuesday-Friday from 10am to 2pm at 508-228-4305.

U-Boat Commander by Robert P. Barsanti
One recent morning, the good fishermen of Madaket woke up to a Land Rover Discovery. It was discovered off the end of the Jackson Point Ramp, in eight feet of the North Atlantic. The owner described it as stolen. And sunk. Such is the summer. While a lot can be said about the U-Boat commander, we can’t say that it is a surprise. Cars, from Chappaquiddick on to the East, have found themselves deep in the Atlantic more than their drivers’ manuals recommend. Ford 350’s slip in the surf off of Nobadeer, Jeep’s become awash on the way up to Great Point, and Fortieth Pole claims a four-wheeled victim almost every Sunday. I choose to blame television. If you watch enough television, you watch these wonderful ads where some car goes cruising along the beach, picking up plastic, saving the turtles, and splashing through the surf. All of us, entranced by the pleasure of stomping in puddles, come to an island where you can drive on the beaches. With the promise of advertising, who wouldn’t want to send their Kia splashing through the waves? Nantucket redecorates and rearranges itself for its new summer visitors. We mow the lawns, trim the hedges, and plant more houses where we can. The island distributes pictures, brochures, and guides across the country and, with remarkable effect, the visitors come flocking every summer. The acquisitions lawyer from Herndon comes up for two weeks, re-directs many of his billable hours to a realtor, and finds his BMW stymied amid the rolling stops on Main Street. The island has changed over the last fifty years. We have deeper wine cellars, greener golf courses, and plusher beds than we have ever had. For our most discerning guests and members, the island offers five stars in almost everything. We have upgraded all of our amenities. Save for the streets. Nantucket, the town, was laid out before whaling became a thing. Travel one mile uphill from the harbor, and the farming history of the island created the paths and roads that cross most of the sand. Only two roads, Milestone and Surfside, owe their creation to railroad tracks. In July, the streets that were laid out for steam engines and buggies start loadcontinued on page 22

Bringing the American Revolution to Life
The First Oval Office Project is a one-of-a-kind traveling immersive environment that includes hand-sewn tents and hand-made camp furniture that bring to life the stories of the diverse people and complex events during the years 17751783. This week, Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July 14, the Nantucket Historical Association is welcoming the Philadelphia Museum of the American Revolution as they bring this unique display to Nantucket Island. Visitors will be invited to explore replicas of General George Washington's tents; examine and try out replica equipment, tools, and uniforms; and engage with living history interpreters. The program will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on both days at the NHA’s Old Mill. This program is family-friendly and free. An evening lecture with Dr. R. Scott Stephenson, President & CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution, will be held at the Whaling Museum on Wednesday, July 13, at 6 pm. Stephenson will explore the history and significance of General George Washington’s mobile field headquarters, now housed and displayed in Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution, which had a rich and dramatic life following the death of George and Martha Washington, with a remarkable cast of characters from Lafayette to Robert E. Lee to an Episcopal priest. Tickets are available at nha.org. The NHA will also host a special lecture with author Nathanial Philbrick on Friday, July 15, at 6 pm at the Whaling Museum. During this lecture, Philbrick will dive into his series of books based around the American Revolution, including Bunker Hill, Valiant Ambition, and In the Hurricane’s Eye. Tickets to this lecture are also available at NHA.org. The NHA’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.

Launching Lives Event on July 14
Thursday, July 14, Egan Maritime Institute will host its annual Launching Lives, Lasting Legacies Fundraiser in at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum from 5 to 7 pm. Egan Maritime Institute’s mission is to preserve and celebrate our island’s seafaring heritage. The Launching Lives, Lasting Legacies cocktail party celebrates all of Egan Maritime’s programs, with a special focus on our educational arm: Sea of Opportunities. Sea of Opportunities is a diverse offering of education and outreach programs available to every Nantucket student at multiple points throughout their educational careers. It seeds the maritime workforce of tomorrow and opens doors for local youth to opportunities that will enhance their futures and our coastal community. Over the past eight years, Egan Maritime has provided opportunities for local youth to sail aboard a Tall Ship for three- or seven-day expeditions to learn the ropes and find confidence at sea. Each participant has earned the title of Student Mariner upon their return. These sails have greatly impacted their futures. Some Student Mariners who have graduated from Nantucket High School have gone on to maritime institutions and academies, and they all attribute their choice of education and career paths to their time on the Tall Ship Lynx and their Student Mariner experiences. The annual Launching Lives, Lasting Legacies fundraising event is held on the gorgeous grounds of the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum and will include heavy hors d'oeuvres from A Taste of Nantucket, a raw bar from Legacy Raw Bar Co. , and signature cocktails from Cisco Brewers. Guests will hear brief updates from Evan Schwanfelder, Director of Maritime Education and from Captain Don Peacock of the Tall Ship Lynx and will hear stories from students who have participated in Sea of Opportunities programs throughout the years. Plus, there will be an exclusive pop-up exhibition inside the museum about the Sea of Opportunities programs and students. Tickets are still available at eganmaritime.org or by calling 508-228-2505.

Count Everything! by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation It’s once again BioBlitz time on Nantucket! July is the perfect time for a BioBlitz. It’s peak growing season, height of insects, the tail end of nesting season for many birds, decent weather for beachcombing, and there are lots of people on-island to help count them all! A BioBlitz, traditionally, is a biological survey to document every living thing over a certain amount of time in a designated area. Usually, it’s for a short period of time; 24 hours or a weekend. However, our Nantucket BioBlitz will be held for the entire month of July to catalog as many living things as possible. The Nantucket BioBlitz has been an annual event since 2020 and is hosted by the Nantucket Land Council (NLC) and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF). What started as a response to COVID, with nature exploration being one of the only safe activities, has morphed into a month-long deep dive into all living things on Nantucket. Starting July 1, participants using the iNaturalist app take photos of any living thing and upload them to the database. Participants can enter a name for the species or let the algorithm suggest an ID based in the photo, lo-

Friday, July 15, local Nantucket kids who have taken Stand Up & LearnTM workshops perform their original stand-up sets on stage in the White Heron Theatre at 5 pm. Professional comics will be on hand to give notes to these up-andcoming future comics. This show is a free, family-friendly, and fun for all ages. At 8 pm, the fun moves back to the Dreamland Theatre as Comedy Fest performers ease into a Night of Southern Comfort for a decidedly adult-only show, featuring some of the top comedians from the South: Ron Bullard, Tony Esposito, and KarenMorgan. Rounding off the evening, local comic and musician Brian Glowacki's band Perfect Day will play Southern music, and, add to the laughs as the festival celebrates the life of comedian Vic Henley. Boston vs New York Comedy SmACKdown ends the 2022 Nantucket Comedy Festival on a high note on Saturday, July 16 when comedians from Boston and New York face-off. Emmy Award Winner Bob Ley from ESPN will once again officiate and keep the game (relatively) clean as these comics swing for the fences. Jay Whittaker, Brad Mastrangelo, and Paul D'Angelo are here for Boston; and for New York: Al Ducharme, Marla Schultz and Alex Babbitt. This show always sells out, so buy your tickets now! “Every year, the Nantucket Comedy Festival brings together an amazing group of talented comedians who come to the island in order to raise funds for our children’s charity Stand Up & LearnTM,” says Founder and Executive Director Kevin Flynn. “We are all so grateful to have made it through the last two difficult years, and we are so happy to be back at full capacity again.” Tickets and Patron Passes may be purchased at Nantucketcomedy.com. The Nantucket Comedy Festival is a non-profit organization that uses comedy to empower, engage, and inspire through its annual festival and the year-round Stand Up & LearnTM workshops for students. Their vision is a community connected by laughter.

cation, and season. Volunteer verifiers then add an identification or confirm the ID you may have given the observation. iNaturalist is one of the most popular nature apps in the world, helping people identify plants, animals, insects, microbes, etc. It is a joint project between the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. As of this writing, there are more than 105 million observations from around the world documenting more than 384,000 species. This huge database is used by scientists to track different aspects of nature. By recording and sharing observations, you create researchquality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. Participating in the July BioBlitz is a great way to learn about iNaturalist (which many of us use year-round) and to learn about local biodiversity. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation hosted an online workshop last winter on using iNaturalist. A recording can still be viewed at youtube.com/watch?v=hbwLjGeHPZk.

During the 2021 BioBlitz, participants more than doubled the target goal for number of submissions and number of species with total reports of over 2,200 observations and 861 species. A few highlights of observations include dog-vomit slime mold, chain-dot geometers, and Northern Harriers. For 2022, we’re hoping to beat last year’s numbers and we’d love for you to participate. There are prizes for most observations and unique finds. Last year, the most observed species for the month was common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) which eked in a win with one more observation than the common milkweed. Which species will take the lead this year...will be a plant again or possibly an insect or mollusk that could take the lead? To participate, head out to any location on-island with your smartphone, snap a picture of the species you see, upload to the iNaturalist app, and join NLC and LLNF for Bioblitz 2022. You can document nearly any living thing you find—fish, crabs, insects, flowers, trees, and more—to help document the many special species found on Nantucket Island. Visit the project page at inaturalist.org/projects/nlc-and-llnf-bioblitz-2022 to keep tabs on what’s been seen where and who the leaders are. As of this writing the event has just started and there’s a tie for most observations: goat’s rue (Tephrosia virginiana) and yellow thistle (Cirsium horridulum). These are followed closely by Black Cherry Leaf Gall Mite. I expect these to be overtaken by more showy flowers and charismatic species as the month continues. If you want to BioBlitz with others or just learn more about iNaturalist, join one of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s guided walks on Friday mornings. For the month of July, they will be focusing on using iNaturalist and documenting species. Representatives from the Nantucket Land Council will also join. The walks are free, but participants are asked to register at llnf.org/events. By taking part in the 2022 BioBlitz challenge, not only are you engaging with our beautiful open spaces and varied habitats, you are fostering a love for the outdoors for yourself, your children, and joining a community of like-minded environmentalists. To find out more and to receive updates on the results of the BioBlitz, follow LLNF and NLC on social media or sign up for their newsletters.

locked “Tragedy of the Commons.” Someone should call the realtor and complain. I am sympathetic. Nantucket was not designed for the mass of people who arrive in early July. The cell phone circuits clog, the water pressure drops, and previously idle intersections stack up with cars. Greed, bad planning, and Yankee stubbornness have created jammed parking lots and slow-moving automotive clots. Had we built the island with an eye towards tourism, as Disney World was, we would have colorcoded parking areas, open-topped courtesy shuttles, and cartoon characters picking up the trash from Main Street. Goofy and Pluto would bag your dog’s poop at Tuppancy Links. Instead, Nantucket developed as an intimate island where, for six weeks, the population quadruples and the milk runs out. As a result, it does not run on the usual written (or unwritten) rules of society. Instead, it operates on consideration. In mainland America, rules make for an orderly society. We take a number at the deli and wait our turn. We keep in our lane, we shop with our eyes down, and we try not to stare. We have traffic lights and traffic cops and traffic signs that instruct us when it is our turn to go. The rules insure that we don’t need to know anything about the car in front of us, the lady in the other line, or the other diners. They might be drivers, shoppers, or customers, but they aren’t real people. On-island, the real people are everywhere. The well-fed fellow at the stop sign is the same fellow in

line at the Bake Shop and is also the Eucharistic minister at the church (or your landlord). Rules work in a nameless society, but out here the labels slip off and the names stick out. We “know who you are” in your office or at the country club, and we know who you are at the hostess stand. We won’t forget who you are now. Especially if you are a U-Boat commander. Therefore, instead of rules, Nantucketers make do with consideration. Those who were born here walk Main Street with the assumption that whatever they do, and whatever they are wearing, will get reported back to Mom before the next boat. You learn to consider the response before you consider blasting your car horn. Consideration means standing in someone else’s shoes and deciding that you would rather not be stepping in Ben the Wonder Dog’s poop. It means coming into an intersection and looking at the other drivers’ faces. It means waving, gesturing, and letting someone else go, even if she got to the stop sign a split second after you did. She will be making your coffee in about five minutes. Nantucket goes against our national culture. As a nation, we have become a velvet rope jungle of brass nameplates, member’s only dining rooms, and kitchen entrances. The “rules” force us to cluster by shoes, shirts, and cell-phones. On the mainland, we can ignore rivers of people who work in the same building, live in the same city, and drive the same streets. Not our kind, dear. Just look forward. On Nantucket, however, the land is too mixed and the population too small to let the velvet ropes of class and cash control everything. You might have swindled Bitcoin, rode Tesla to the top, and own the course record, but you still have to wait in line for doughnuts. The stop signs speak, the parking lots whisper, and the cobblestones mutter the same thing: you’re not as important as you think you are. (Even if you were, in fact, born here.)

Steve Pacek gives a stand-out per- photo by Cary Hazlegrove formance as the main character, Morton. He perfectly portrays the obsessively fearful but engagingly optimistic young man, capturing both his vulnerability and the character’s boyish charm. And Pacek brings the audience along as Morton, through his many encounters, gains the insight and confidence to become the man he was meant to be. Broadway actor Jonathan Brody nimbly plays all the other characters: yes, all! This is no mean feat when you realize this includes more than a dozen fast transitions from one very different character to the next: Morton’s father, a train conductor, an Old Salt of a sea captain, a female innkeeper, aviator Jean Adams Cook, a little girl, island businessmen, and Tony Sarg. His body language and brilliant expressions demonstrate Brody’s great range: a true showcase of talent. Shanahan’s script and direction demand perfect comedic timing and physicality from Pacek and Brody, and they both deliver from the moment the play begins with performances that are believable and funny and that welcome the audience into the fast-paced action. See Monsters of the Deep is a delightful summer offering at White Heron Theatre, located downtown at 5 North Water Street, behind the Whaling Museum. Theatergoers who arrive early can enjoy a delicious libation from the White Heron bar while they mingle before curtain time. With masterful storytelling, heartfelt themes, and extraordinary acting, See Monsters will add joyful fun and plenty of laughter to your island evening. Tickets to See Monsters of the Deep and The Half, playing in repertory, are available at WhiteHeronTheatre.org or at their Box Office at 508-825-5268.

Featured Restaurant: Petrichor Wine Bar
Perfect Pairings & Plentiful Plates by C. Oscar Olson
Though we’ve been out to sea for years and years, it seems there is always something new to lay our eyes on. A new place to spot the sunset or a new beach to dip our toes into. Or, better yet, a restaurant new to us (but not new) where we can enjoy some fantastic culinary creations and libations. We walked into Petrichor near 5:30pm and the place was beginning to buzz. Wine was being poured, cocktails stirred, and delicious looking dishes were rushing from the kitchen. Yet the dining room was dark and relaxed, very inviting, and we felt right at home after a hectic day in July. Interesting accent pieces both bright and subtle liven up the space, eclectic art adorned every wall, and we were immediately greeted by owner Jill and her right-hand man John. The menu at Petrichor is refined and covers all the bases without any added fuss. All the starters are made to share, and Wine and Cocktails the entrees will leave you wanting
for nothing. Of course you could come alone, but everything tastes better when shared with good company. What more perfect plate to start with than a Cheese and Charcuterie? It featured a wide range of house-selected meats, cheeses, jam, fruit, and more, making every bite perfectly unique and delicious. Rich, meaty Manchego and three unique salamis, crispy green apples, and ripe red grapes, crunchy toast and a fantastic fig jam—what more could you ask for? The soft, ripe sheep’s milk brie was our favorite piece on the simple and simply elegant slate dish. Cheese and Charcuterie Flatbread is an excellent option when dining with friends, and Petrichor prepares more than one. We chose the daily vegetarian preparation. On the night we dined, a generous portion of this take on pizza was made with more of the deliciously sweet fig jam we enjoyed on the Charcuterie, a blend of cheeses, and cool, peppery arugula. The crust was crisp on the outside, chewy and tender within, and we fought over the last piece. Our favorite first of the evening was the Tuna Tartare. The presentation was picture perfect: mild, tender tuna topped with creamy avocado and mixed with grapes that surprised us in the best way. Scallions provided an herbal, oniony edge and the chili aioli livened up every bite. The thick-cut house potato crips added just enough salt and drove everything home.

Jill Hollen Viselli, a Nantucket sommelier and year-round island resident, is a certificated graduate of Boston University's Elizabeth Bishop Wine Program. For more than 20 years, their courses have guided, taught, and enhanced expertise in the art of wine for passionate people like Jill. Be sure to ask for an unmatched beverage pairing to go with any dish you order. Jill and her staff Tuna Tartar have expert understanding of wine and spirits that will enhance your meal in ways you wouldn’t expect. And don’t sleep on the full bar: we sampled some of John’s incredible cocktails just to make sure the rumors were true... they are! The Flying Jilbert is a daring take on the classic whiskey sour. Dubbed “a whiskey walks into a wine bar…,” it’s a refreshing rye sour with a red wine float. The wine adds a dry element that counters the sweet of the mix and brings out the fruitiness in the whiskey. It’s also pretty nice to look at. Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Wake up the evening with a round of Night Swimming espresso martinis. It’s the smoothest and most refined we’ve ever had, and we’ve had a lot. These could definitely be dangerous. Our favorite refreshment was the Good Vibration. It’s a daringly delicious take on a sangria, with blanco tequila, peach, strawberry, and a prosecco floater. The wine adds just the right amount of fizz for the most satisfying drink of summer. Petrichor’s mid-island location is an excellent place to unwind and hop over the hustle of downtown. There’s plenty of parking and it’s easily accessible from whatever direction you might be Lamb Lollipops

coming from. The dining room is spacious and inviting, and once you walk inside you’ll feel right at home. Chef Dante Benatti kept the hits coming with our entrees. Just like our starters, the portions were sized to share and so satisfying. We settled down with a Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. Served alongside a perfectly dressed portion of greens and a tangy Grilled Skirt Steak lemon caper aioli, there was almost no breading or binder to be seen. Sweet, plump pieces of crab filled every single bite. Lamb is a rare treat for us, and the Lamb Lollipops at Petrichor are not to be missed. It’s a deliciously rich dish served with buttery Yukon Gold mashed potatoes atop a divine rosemary garlic butter sauce. The roasted cherry tomatoes explode with flavor in every forkful and the lamb itself was absolutely spoon tender. The special of the evening was a special indeed: a Grilled Skirt Steak with a verdant chimichurri, crunchy, creamy new potatoes, and an arugula salad on the side. Marvelously marinated, medium rare, tender and toothsome, his will absolutely knock any steak you have this summer right out of the park. Get it while you can. After this most scrumptious spread, dessert was destined to be divine. Their take on a tart tatin, Petrichor’s Apple Tart absolutely allows the fruit to sing. The classic combination of cool, creamy vanilla ice cream and warm, well spiced apples is a match made in heaven, and we had a hard time not licking the plate. The menu changes often, so take a seat regularly and check back often. With dishes and drinks like the ones we tried, we know for certain you Apple Tart wouldn’t want to miss a single thing.
