About "Imitation from the nature and art masters"

To promote and distinguish our own colors and identities, XUE XUE COLORS aims to raise the awareness of Taiwan’s cultural colors by taking inspirations from Taiwanese art masters and the nature beauty of Taiwan.

XUE XUE COLORS website established and archive of over 5,000 art pieces and photography that reflect the color inspirations of Taiwanese culture.

Xue Xue Colors "Xue Xue Colors" is the house brand of Xue Xue Institute and draws its inspiration from Taiwan’s color ful butter flies. They periodically launch single colored or multicolored scar ves to match the seasons. In the shop, an array of colors are displayed along different elements of nature and provoke visitors to discover colors inspired by nature.

We wish to learn from nature and draw inspiration from the colorful species of Taiwan. I designed 4 types of optical glasses and 2 types of sun glasses which were inspired from native butterflies of Taiwan.

Ecoh Ecoh Xue Echo Echo Xue — a restaurant at the Xue Xue Institute — advocates food as a path that leads to culture. Echo Echo Xue is themed around various townships in Taiwan and is dedicated to introducing local ing redients as well as different cultural backg rounds. The menu is renewed ever y t wo to three months.

The Show-off mural The Show- Off Mural is a mural in Echo Echo Xue that is themed around the various characteristics of different areas in Taiwan. The mural, constantly renewed by different ar tists and designers, is the main visual attraction of the restaurant.

Design Concept Tainan Month 2011 Tainan is the most historical city in Taiwan. During the era of Dutch colonial rule, Tainan began to flourish due to the street planning around For t Provintia. Presently, Tainan is the prime spot for many different authentically Taiwanese snacks. In my design, I used a circle to represent the beauty of the Mean (Zhongyong). With For t Provintia as the center of the circle, I used prints to depict the historical city of Tainan. The scattered and close arrangements of prints correspond with the imager y of the actual streets and blocks. The red of the background was inspired by the Confucius Temple; the overall visual effect aptly represents Tainan as a city of histor y and of delectable food.

Design Concept Yunlin Month 2010

Yunlin is the main agricultural area in Taiwan and contains the Zhuoshui River which is Taiwan’s lifeline of agricultural development. The culture of Taiwanese glove puppetr y is closely tied with Yunlin. Glove puppetr y often employs vibrant colors to attract the audiences. Therefore, in my design I used fuchsia, a color commonly used in

puppetr y, to depict the Zhuoshui River. The fuchsia-colored river echos with the railroad and travels across patches of greenness on the mural. The river is hung in midair as a strip of color to represent the geographical relationship between the Zhuoshui River and the par t of Yunlin that is south of the river.

Design Concept Hsinchu Month 2011

Hsinchu is one of the main Hakka settlements in Taiwan. Floral fabric, a traditional printed fabric, is an essential element of the Hakka culture. These floral fabrics are characterized by an abundance in vivid colors. The idea of my design was to represent this fabric in mosaics to enrich the sense of space. Sitting close to the mural, one is surrounded by colorful geometrical

shapes; seeing it from afar, one sees the clear silhouette of the Hakka floral fabric print.

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a city that never sleeps. It is also a city that blends old architecture and new buildings. In the alleys and lanes behind newer and taller buildings, one can always find old apar tment buildings. The white dots on the mural are painted with a neon paint that absorbs natural light in the day. As day progresses into night and as

natural light dims, the white dots begin to glow, forming a mural full of neon dots.

Kaohsiung is the main harbor city in southern Taiwan. Metal, shipbuilding, and harbor-related production are its main industries. The city’s geographical location, south of the Tropic of Cancer, ensures an abundance in sunshine as well as a rich blueness in the sea. The sunset, as seen from Sizihwan, is the city’s most beautiful scener y. In my design,

I used rectangular color blocks to represent Kaohsiung’s famed industries. From the composition of the mural, one can perceive a ship on the horizon, not far from the flaming red sunset, sailing into the big blue sea.

Concept of City Colors Design City colors are the sum of all exposed and perceived colors in public city spaces. They include natural environmental colors such as earth and vegetation; cultural colors such as those used in daily life, historical backgrounds, and cultural impressions; and artificial colors used in architecture, advertisement, and transportation. The composition of natural colors is formed by various territorial conditions, including a place’s latitude, longitude, altitude, and its bodies of water. A human being’s perception of color leads to changes in his or her mental condition. As a result, people of tropical zones are predisposed to selecting warm and passionate color combinations that are highly saturated and strongly contrasted. Conversely, the people living in temperate or frigid zones are more partial to neutral and rational color combinations of low to medium saturation. Different territorial conditions — sunshine, air, and water — contribute to a diverse source of natural colors,

providing versatile color elements. Speaking scientifically, the variation in the color temperature of sunlight is due to an area’s latitude and longitude as well as earth’s orbital and rotational period in relation to the sun. Variation in natural colors is due to differences in temperature and vegetation, which varies according to a location’s coordinates. Ecological conditions, such as those found in different bodies of water such as coastal, near-streams, and mountain streams, as well as lands such as deserts, rocky areas, and caves, also contribute to the variation in natural colors. These multi-layered relations are closely linked and inseparable. Since ancient times, when constructing their environment, man’s most important building materials have been those which are locally accessible. Therefore, different environmental conditions limit certain sources for building materials, making each region’s construction unique. For example, the pyramids of Egypt and the Colosseum of Rome are vastly different. Stated briefly, regional differences cause

the difference in appearances of countries. Since the dawn of industrial society, mass-produced building materials have been transported all over the world via highly developed means of transportation. The term ‘global village’ not only stresses the continuous development and perfection of the means of transportation, communication, and technology that allow people to feel closer. It also stresses the similarities in buildings. As building materials become internationally available due to trade, and, as techniques are exchanged and updated, there is a growing inability to distinguish between the appearances of diverse cities and countries. The issue of expressing local cultures and city appearances has been a long-standing discussion amongst countries; city colors are only one part of the equation. As Globalization transpires, the most important thing is how to present a culture at its best.

Development Background of University Area

Strolling through the neighborhoods of Qingtian Street, Heping East Road, Wenzhou Street, and Xingsheng South Road while investigating the area’s history, one sees many Japanese style official residences and dormitories that once belonged to the Taihoku High School and the Taihoku Imperial University. They were built by the Office of the Governor– General of Taiwan during the Japanese Ruling Era. Since then, schooling systems have changed, campuses have expanded, and as urban renewal took place, more residences and shops have entered the

area. During the 1990s and 2000s, airdefense grounds and official residences and dormitories were replaced by a great number of new buildings. Yet, in the alleys and lanes behind these new buildings, old residences and dormitories remain, forming unique groupings brimming with cultural atmosphere. In addition, the arts and music department of the National Taiwan Normal University is in close proximity, which attracts more cultural activities, cafés, tea houses, and independent music. This also enhances the area’s cultural atmosphere.

Inspiration The area, because of its early development, is enriched by the presence of old trees. The trees create a greenness and tranquility that have become a defining characteristic of living in these districts. Compared with the rapid pace of city dwellers, strolling under the shade of these old trees seems calm and elegant. The scene is akin to some simple yet stately ink and wash painting, rich in both culture and greenness. I have integrated historical aspects, environmental conditions, and functions of the city in order to conduct a plan of colors. Themed A Scholar’s Reasoning, Greener y and Black Tiles, this proposal is based on natural colors. It aims to analyze the protected old trees of this area, to link street blocks with various greens in the color spectrum, and to conduct color planning according to the characteristics of regional plants. The combination of the old façades of buildings, the Japanese style black tiles and gray building material such as concrete and granitoid, along

with the random old trees and green plants imbue the area with an ink and

wash imager y that is stately in its simplicity and elegant in its subtly.

Traditional Taiwanese Architecture

As a city’s economy takes off, the appearance of a city must change and many old buildings will cease to exist. Dihua Street, the only preserved old street in Taipei city, was once famous for carrying Chinese New Year celebration goods. Dihua Street’s course of development can be divided into three phases from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the Japanese Ruling Era, and finally, the era of postliberation from Japan. Now, there are three main types of shops on Dihua Street: Chinese medicine, fabric, and

groceries and dry foods shops. The diverse styles of structures on Dihua Street are modern times architecture in a nutshell, including Minnan style shops and residences, two-story Western style buildings, Baroque style buildings vastly popular during the Taisho and Showa periods, and modernist buildings. Taking inspiration from a painting, South Street Festival by Japanese Ruling Era Taiwanese artist Guo Shiue Hu, the spirit of this design project is to restore the colors of time.

Research

1. Minnan style shops and residences: The majority of Minnan style shops and residences are simple onestory buildings built with earth blocks and red bricks. Their main aesthetic characteristics are slanted rooftops covered with tiles, doors and windows formed by wooden boards, and arcades under the building’s eaves. 2. Two-story Western style buildings: Apart from typically having two stories, Western style buildings are also characterized by the parapets on the roof, arched windows, and vase-shaped railings arranged in fretwork. 3. Baroque style buildings: Baroque style buildings are mainly built with granitoid and red bricks. They are characterized by lavish adornments, erect and prominent gables, as well as intricate carved ornaments of floral scrolls. 4. Modernist buildings: Modernist buildings are mainly built with facing bricks and granitoid. Emphasis is placed on expressing the beauty of lines and balanced proportions; the overall effect is rational, concise, and bright. 29

Heart Sutra, adapted from a novel written by Eileen Chang

Heart Sutra, by Eileen Chang, depicts a story about incest. The story follows a father and daughter’s dubious feelings for one another and the changes in these feelings, which were the evils that

would corrode the family over a period of ten years. Eileen Chang’s words are delicate and never directly expose the relationship. The director disengaged the mother, whose role was an observer,

and placed her in and out of the script. She is portrayed as confused, helpless, oppressed, and near collapse when facing the relationship between the two greatest loves of her life.

Design Concept The main character of the script, adapted from Hear t Sutra, is the mother, her inner narrative and her ceaseless conflict with reality. The work of René Magritte has been an immense inspiration to me. Surréalisme reveals the distor tion and contradiction in reality as well as the conflict between the past and the present; its concepts are extremely congenial with the script. A tilted and peeling white space is the main language of my stage design. I created a stage atmosphere that is cold and neurotic and separated the blocking area into three par ts, according to the characters. The dining table on the left stage belongs to the mother; the living room on the right belongs to the father and daughter; the sky and alley of the up stage are areas disengaged from reality. The distribution of left and right areas give the mother space to deliver a monologue and to become independent from — or integrated with — the space as her lines progress and mentality develops.

Chuck, a young man with a Don Juan reputation, brings his date to play a round of miniature golf and to seduce her. He philosophizes and jokes, slipping in as much sexual innuendo as he can. When they move to the second hole, a slightly

older Chuck II appears with another date. His technique more slick, but his date is suspicious of him. Both couples continue their conversations and games, the dialogue comically interwoven. Finally a third Chuck, now in his late thirties,

arrives with a young date. He is somewhat rumpled, tired and things are not going well for him. His latest date doesn't get his jokes and, worse, she is beating him at golf.

Design Concept David Ives uses musical formats as a means of propelling a story forward. His method of piling up layers of dialogue has left a particularly deep impression upon me. When reading the script, one can already feel the sexual suggestions, which were expressed by a clever utilization of blocking. Taking the ‘musical format’ as the essential spirit of the new play, we can analyze the work as well as the director’s adaptation of the script, which accumulates emotions through a large amount of dancing and singing. Stage design provides the actors and the chorus group with visuals representing the musical format. I designed five layers of heights on stage — taken from the concept of the musical staff — for the main blocking area. No matter whether the actors move up and down or left to right, they are melodies that travel on the staff. The actors are notes while the gold flags are rests.

The number 3 is an important element; 3 groups of actors, 3 sets of dialogues, and 3 layers. The first group of actors entered the stage, played golf, delivered their dialogue, and then sang solo. Next, the second group of actors entered the stage, played golf, moved, delivered their dialogue; the first group of actors stood in counterpoint position, moved, and sang in group chorus. Finally, the third group of actors entered the stage, played golf, moved, delivered their dialogue; the first and second group of actors stood in counterpoint position, moved, and sang in group chorus. Thus, three different layers of accumulation are created. The interlude of dancing and singing further enriches the diversity of onstage performance.

The Two of Us is a play created by two actors whose personal life experiences were transformed into implicit stories. The story describes a twin sister and brother who returned to their childhood

home where they lived with their parents. They reminisced about the past that they experienced together and then the things that befell them in recent years. It was their birthday. The sister brought

a birthday cake back to this residence while the brother bid life farewell. The two disputed the issue of life, speaking of the self-doubt and quandaries that never ceased to exist in their lives.

Design Concept

A Play Created for The Crown Art Festival

Reading the script of The Two of Us, I sense congestion, oppression, staring, and dilemma. I set the background of the stor y in Yonghe, New Taipei City. The Zhonghe and Yonghe districts are amongst the most densely populated in the Greater Taipei region. Fur ther, many of the residents of Zhonghe and Yonghe residents are not native to the region; they moved from various areas in Taiwan for the area’s proximity to Taipei as well as relatively low living. Rooftop add-ons — common in overpopulated areas — ser ve as a sentimental design element that expresses self inflicted marginalization. This is a realistic setting. I used add-

ons seen on top of old apar tment buildings to express my sentiments about the script. The weather in Taipei is humid and hot, which causes walls to chip and peel. These rooftop add-ons are congested but contain the many aspects of a home, such as a backyard, a water tower, and an electrical panel box. The light from surrounding signs continuously shines in these homes. The sound of cars and people shuttle and flow through their backyards. There is an intently tangible sense of movement and a sense of heaviness when faced with the end of life; there is also a strong marginalized contrast between the two senses.

Poetics of Threads is an anthropological exhibition that goes beyond costume design. The creator, Professor Chen Wan Lee, designed the costumes for William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, combining classical Western clothing elements with Taiwanese aboriginal textiles. All textiles were hand woven by aboriginal people, weft by weft and warp by warp. Designing and building this exhibition was an extremely meaningful process and included: field research, exhibition design, exhibition production, holding aboriginal craft workshops, publication of results, and launching the final exhibition. The impact and energy I felt throughout the process brought me an understanding of the true meaning of an exhibition.

Plan The exhibition can be categorized into 4 parts: costume, bark axis, hand, and documentary. The costume section consists of ornamental hats, clothes, accessories, and shoes. Images gathered since 2004 of historical research, field research, workshops, and performances were printed on bark. The hands of all the creators involved in the making of the clothes were casted and molded as a form of sentimental documentation. In so doing, their energetic and vital touch was preserved.

Bark is one of the most primitive sources of fiber. The fiber was developed into threads which were, in turn, woven into textiles. Bark plays a pivotal role in aboriginal clothing. The creator used bark as a physical representation of the

time axis, on which all records are linked together. The bark curls around the space, partitioning it into parts; visitors can follow the curve while appreciating the documentation. Due to the uniqueness of the various

materials, the space’s design revolves around the language of thread. All pieces of clothing are strung together and displayed hanging on linen, which is a natural material that corresponds with the spirit of the exhibition.

This play is based on the true story of Chen Jun Zhi, the director of a documentary film concerning homosexuality. The author’s father was the owner of a film developing franchise during an era in which film was still popular. The franchise

expanded too rapidly and collapsed overnight. The mother fled to the U.S., leaving the author and his sister behind where they lead a homeless and miserable life. When the author was 17, his sister died from overdose which left the family forever broken. Later

in his life, he went to the U.S. to seek his mother and further his education. Only after his father passed away was unspoken reconciliation achieved. He still continues living, yet he has already had to escape his life so many times.

Design Concept ‘Escape’ and ‘death’ are amongst the two most devastating experiences in the author’s life. He lived in an era in which gay rights were not valued, nor was being gay accepted. These conditions painted his experiences an even darker gray. In my design, I restored the background to resemble that time. The vehicle being forcefully towed away symbolizes a home as well as the conditions that forced them to flee. The family’s impor ted vehicle, once a symbol of wealth, became their only place of residence; an item that was once the cause of env y was reduced to a means of escape.

About "Show On App" Show On is the pronunciation of bestselling author Xiao Hong’s Taiwanese name. In Show On APP an OL (office lady) vents her emotions and complaints about daily life. The project follows “an observation and report on modern women,” and starts out with ridiculing, self-mocking, and nonsensical writings. The illustrated idea is that not only does the modern woman consume objects needed for daily life, she also consumes herself and is consumed by others.

Design Concept On the surface, to consume is to purchase merchandise. People shop and consume to satisfy their daily needs and empty hearts. However, they do not just consume objects. They also consume themselves and are, simultaneously, consumed by others. People are objectified, celebrities are gossiped about, and objects are consumed — all this to satisfy a modern person’s hollow life. I fill up space with large amounts of merchandise — humans being one of the objects — for my design’s visual language. The old and new are translated as the old-fashioned and trendy. Through the idea of “one can buy a plant or hang up a poster of forest to satisfy one’s longing for nature,” the void which consumerism wishes to fill is expressed.

About "Turn Left, Turn Right. Love or Regret" In a city, a man tends to turn right ever ytime he leaves his apar tment building, no matter where he is going. A woman, who lives in the same building, habitually turns left each time she leaves. There are many coincidences in life, even two lines headed for opposite directions might meet at some point. The two met in front of a fountain in the park. Feeling as if they had known one another for many years, they spent a sweet afternoon together. Before they separated, they took down each other’s phone number but a sudden rainshower blurred the digits. Unable to find each other, they were left saddened and lost. The two lived in a maze-like city; they could not hear each other’s longing calls, nor could they find their way. At times, they brushed by one another on the hustling and bustling streets of the city. He still went right, she still turned left, but neither forgot the other.

Design Concept In Sophie Calle’s works, facts blend with fiction. When applied in different scenes, factual and fictional elements seem distanced from reality, although not too far away. In the work, there is a circulating conversation between words and photography that articulates a rational yet poetic aesthetic. Visually, the abstract concepts of ‘absent existence’ and ‘circulation’ are essential.

About "Absente Rendez-Vous Avec Sophie Calle" In French contemporary artist Sophie Calle’s work Exquisite Pain, she exhibits evidence of the pains she experienced due to separation. She also collected the painful experiences of others and responded to them with her own words and photography. As the story circulates, inch by inch her pain is erased away and the artist gradually becomes placid and objective. This act of convalescence and its back-and-forth movement became the main idea with which Absente: RendezVous Avec Sophie Calle was created. The director wishes to converse with the artist and interpret her words.

This is a production and marketing proposal for a three story residence that comes with a basement garage and garden. The client wanted the design to appeal to different potential buyers; the two proposals I designed are as follows: 1) 4 Adult Family 2) 6 Person Family

This proposal is specific to newlyweds living with their parents. There are two independent suites with built-in bathrooms on the second floor. This option offers a sense of family living as well as privacy. The rooms are spacious and suitable for preparing for a newborn. On the first floor, both the dining room

and the kitchen are next to floor length windows and are situated to face the back garden. When friends drop by the house, the host can allow the children to play in the open space of the garden while keeping an eye on them. Additionally, behind the living room on the first floor, there is an independent study room

where one may read in peace. In the basement, there is not only a garage and a storage/laundry room, but also a space for reading. The basement’s lack of sunlight and great sound insulation also ensures that it’s good for audio and visual entertainment.

This proposal is specific for threegeneration families with hired help. The children’s bedroom is on the second floor, in which, depending on the number of children, there would be a single bed or a bunk bed. When the children are older, they could make use of the grandparent's room. On the first floor,

retired grandparents can spend their leisurely hours in the living room, reading newspapers while watching the children play in the garden through the floor length window. The open space behind the kitchen offers hired help space to rest and dine. In the basement, there is not only a garage and a storage/laundry

room, but also a space for reading. The basement’s lack of sunlight and great sound insulation also ensures that it’s good for audio and visual entertainment. To ensure privacy, there is an independent room for the hired help to ensure privacy.

Residence Interior Design: Old Apartment In the original old apartment, the largest room was the study, in which there were three desks. However, the study was merely used as a storage room where even the refrigerator was kept; the space did not allow for fluid movement. The old kitchen and bathroom were quite cramped, as they were made in the space

that was originally the back balcony. In the two bedrooms, there was not much storage space except for the closets and bookshelves, therefore, belongings were stacked about messily. The mattresses were placed directly on the wood floor. Severe problems with heavy humidity and dust affected all the rooms.

Residence Interior Design: Renovation In my design, I transformed the original study into the living room and turned the space with the hexagonal window into the laundry room. I replaced the original living room with a dining room whose function was flexible: it could also be used as a study. The space is partitioned by glass, which allows more light to flow

throughout the rooms. I expanded the original kitchen and incorporated the bathrooms into the two bedrooms by using the idle spaces in front of the beds. In the main bedroom I added a coat room and designed a bedside cabinet, a drawer under the bed frame, and additional storage units in the walls.

In 2013, I took on a design case for a private residence. The project began in 2010 and, by the time I overtook it, most of the design had been completed. My task was to design the exterior of the residence, the outdoor swimming pool, the courtyard, and the landscape; I was also in charge of arranging the details of the layout and structure and contacting the electricians.

The clients were a married couple — an entrepreneur from Hong Kong and a senior Taiwanese singer — who chose to purchase a residence located in a secluded mountain residential area. The case is interior-design-oriented, therefore the building has to conform to the demands of interior spaces. Throughout the process, the

location of doors and windows, the direction of airflow, and the arrangement of the drainage system went through several corrections. This design case is still a work in progress. What I present here are the parts completed by me.

There is an abundance of trees in the mountain area. I imagine that the space is full of the lighting patterns, such like the sunshine flows through trees and leaves. The top floor is the private space for the female owner to do yoga, read,

and receive friends. This design displays the effect of natural light shifting due to time and seasonal changes. The space is private and exemplifies the female owner’s sophistication.
