Project 1 D-school

Our first design is a work with classmates. We need to create an imaginative work according to the needs of our classmates. Interacting with real people will guide my design direction, and I will try to meet the needs of others. It's a little shame to show others unfinished work, because I know it's not the best. I am not used to fast-paced design and work, because I prefer to spend a long time thinking and completing the same work. If I will do that again, I will go back to the design stage and design more satisfactory works

Everything Start Here......

Project 2 Who-Designs

In this part we try to introduce a famous artist. I choos to intocuce Dana Tanamachi.

My aunt used to be a teacher. When I was young, she often brought us some surplus chalk heads. The special strokes created with chalk heads ran through my childhood. The thick and textured lines, clear and concise patterns, and clear expression of ideas are all the aesthetic legacy of chalk-lettering for me, So I like this kind of art, even though they are now drawn by computers.

Figure 2&3 Dana Tanamachi's Project

In 2009, an impromptu chalk installation for a Brooklyn housewarming party landed Dana her first commission for Google and set the popular chalk-lettering trend— and her career—in motion. After working under design icon Louise Fili, she opened Tanamachi Studio, a boutique design studio specializing in custom typography and illustration for editorial, lifestyle, food, and fashion brands. She has been commissioned globally by clients such as Target, Nike, USPS, Penguin Books, Ralph Lauren, Instagram, and West Elm. Named a Young Gun (YG9) by the Art Director’s Club in 2011 and a Young Creative to Watch by HOW Magazine, she has had the distinct honor of creating custom cover art for O, HOW, and TIME Magazines.

In my opinion, her design is popular and artistic. Art should not only be something obscure and difficult to understand, nor must it have profound implication and connotation. Art should also bring people simple enjoyment of beauty and design objects that can be accepted and felt by most people. I think she is an excellent artist.

Project 3 Dot-Line

For the dot and line work, in my opinion, we need to use gray and black strips of paper to form a specific meaning.Due to the limited shape and quantity, we used the principle of gestalt.

The gestalt is to use different small things to build a big thing. In this project, we need to use dots and lines to build a topic. It's not that hard for me and I like to make a “well-crafted object!”! I have a lot of ideas about how things should be! Since there are always pictures in my brain, I prefer to spend extra time on small details to get things right. I didn't let this project change my idea of abstraction. My understanding of abstraction guided me how to complete this project.

Figure 5 Dot-Line Draft 1

At the same time, in this design, we started using a large number of sketches. First, use a sketchbook to draw the desired shape, and then use actual paper to paste and make it. After determining the shape we want, we will also make more detailed modifications to the same shape, such as converting colors and sizes. From this, we can select the most satisfactory version.

Figure 6 Dot-Line Draft 2

For the topic terror, I choose to use constriction to show. The two independent line will be seen as a whole, so people will think two heavy things make that broke.

For the topic freedom, I also try to make two stick as a whole, the derection of the stick and dot make a feeling of motivation, it looks like the ball is broking the limited and be freedom

For the topic scarcity, I use a lot of negtive space, the dot and the line combine with a single thing, they are small and only a little part of the picture, so it looks scarcity

Project 4 Letter Forms

In this chapter, we explored the multiple forms of letters and fonts, and attempted printing. This is my favorite part! Movable type printing is one of the the Four Great Inventions in ancient China. I feel happy to make works in this way.

In this design, we need to first select a word and then design for it. The design is divided into two parts. The first part is to draw a mind map about this word, allowing us to delve as deeply as possible into a word and its related things. The second part is design, which involves designing the final product through printing, scanning, collage, and other means. I choose the word "fate".

In this assignment, I fully enjoyed the fun of design and was pleasantly surprised to create so many interesting images through simple physical means. Unfortunately, during the review, I found that I did not choose a good word. The concept of "fat" is too abstract and difficult to visualize. But I still feel that my finished product is beautiful.

Project 5 Iterative-Illustrations

This assignment is a mixed project where we need to prepare different types of works to showcase an animal. This is a difficult process, especially when I don't understand a certain technology, my thoughts and paintings become very funny and strange. Finally, we need to showcase our finished product in InDesign. In order to start this work, we need to do a lot of learning. Not only do we need to learn the form of wolves in their natural state, choose artists we like to imitate, but we also need to collect different materials.

Figure 17 Final iterative-illustrations project

This is the first “master” artist iterations, the artist is Wayne White, his artistic style is to use huge artistic characters to express the theme of a landscape painting. When making this painting, I used online landscape paintings as background materials, drew the silhouette of the wolf in Photoshop, and combined them together.

This is the second “master” artist iterations, the artist is Lisa Yuskavage, her artistic style is somewhat abstract, using very thick strokes to depict edges, with materials similar to colored pencils and crayons, and she likes to highlight joints when drawing characters.

I used a colored pencil to draw this picture and tried to draw the background to make the picture less monotonous.

This is the typographic collage iteration. We need to collect black and white text and then collage it into the shape of a wolf.

In this section, I used card carving techniques to stack different parts layer by layer. I also use different shades of background and white text on a black background to represent dark shadows.

Figure 18 "master" artist iteration 1 Figure 19 "master" artist iteration 2 Figure 20 typographic collage interation

This is the collage iterations, in this work we need to use cut shapes from different paper to show the wolf.

I tried to use a picture of flowers to create a wolf to represent nature, but unfortunately, due to the size limitation of the original picture, I used Photoshop to adjust it to make it look more like a wolf. The background uses a gradient effect.

This is the geometric iterations, in this work we need to use different geometric to show wolf.

I did not use painting, but instead used origami, which naturally produces a combination of different geometric shapes. I learned the folding method of the howling wolf on the internet and also used gradient to draw a circular background to show the moon.

This is the continuous line iterations, in this work we need to use only one line to draw the wolf. This assignment requires multiple attempts and practice, and in the end, I chose to depict the shape of a wolf crawling on a stone with its side head. To increase the overall contrast of the poster, I also used Photoshop to convert the lines into pure white and used a black background.

Figure 21 collage interation Figure 22 geometric interation Figure 23 continues line interation

Another very important part of this assignment is typesetting. In addition to the final draft, I also designed two different versions, all of which were eliminated due to various shortcomings.

Project 6 psa-posters

In this project, we need to create posters to be posted in public, it's a public service announcement . This is a pairwise project where we are both the content provider and the designer of each other's posters. This time, I collaborated with Kyle Mcfadden, another classmate in the course, who provided me with the topic of cautious use of artificial intelligence.

During the pas-poster work, it was challenging to be limited to type only, since there is little space to my own idea. I tried using dark bubbles to separate the line of sight and guide reading. And from this work, I have learned that different fonts may give people a completely different feeling.

Although lacking in practice and talent related to art, I always yearn for and love beauty, which is why I hope to choose this class. In this class, I continuously absorbed new and interesting knowledge, which is the exercise of my personal abilities, the expansion of my insights, and good practice.

I believe that art is mainly the release of one's own thoughts, which is very personal and subjective, while design is prepared for others and needs to make others feel beautiful and convenient. For me, I want to choose art, because it’s a way to release my thoughts, and I don’t care if other people like my art.

I firmly believe that I can continue to follow this path to create more art, thank beauty, present beauty, and bring beauty.
