RESEARCH

4. Shadow & Light

When I do research on the topic of POINT / LINE / PLANE, I find a number of precedents given me many ideas in various aspects. For example, in the precendent of Shane Prentice (figure 3), it gives me an idea that the combination of line can be transferred to a plane which is used in my final model as one of the main elements. It is obvious that the relation between lines and planes has been pointed out. An other idea is the organization of planes. In the Shadow & Light (figure 4), it tells that lines can be created by placing the plane skillfully: put two boards in a line leaving some spaces in between, which can be considered as a "line". 6

DEVELOPMENT

7

MODEL

8

In this project, I try to use various methods to show the topic: point, line and plane. Acturally, I think these three elements can be considered as the same idea: individual and group. For example, a point can be considered as a single object, then a line can be considered as countless points arranging together. Similarly, a plane can be also regarded as countless lines putting together. Therefore, I try to combine this main idea into my design which is illustrated by the main shape of this model: a grounp of objects and few single object. On the other hand, I design some details with the ideas gotten from the precedents. I use a set of straight lines to represent a plane which also reflects on this topic. Moreover, using different material to represent different elements: timber for planes, PVC for lines and etc. 9

Firstly, in my consideration, I have no idea about what to do with this topic. After doing large amount of research, I think the key point for MASS, is using the relationship between light and shadow to illustrate the underground feature and the texture of its material. All of the examples I choose emphasize the significance of light and shadow. It provides a strong spatial experience and also creates a internal mysterious space. Moreover, different material textures are magnified by light and the depth of space which should be also presented in my work. 12

DRAWING In this design exercise, I try to create an underground space with a beam of light shrining through. The first idea germinates in mind is an underground rook cave. After doing research on characteristics of rock and comparing to some pictures of rock cave. I design "a deep underground dark space" with "a ray of light". It is similar to a person living in hopeless life and one day somebody gives him a hand to save his life from despiration.

12. Bloomberg Pavillon

In the early stage of brainstorming of this topic, I am affected by the first exercise. In the first task, I use the combination of columns and walls which is the most fundamental form of "FRAME and INFILL". I think that there should be a great number of different kinds of frame and infill that can give me inspiration. For example, the Clubhouse (figure 9) is a good example to show that "INFILL" does not refer to fill up the rectangle created by columns and floors (which is also the normal explaination of wall). It represents to fill up the space and create any "interaction" with the frames. Furthermore, the Bloomberg Pavillon also tells that INFILL can be not only inside but also outside the framing. 16

COMPOSITION

MODEL

18

This exercise mainly focus on the connection between internal and external, the connection between on ground and underground. Therefore, I design this project which is not only placed on the ground but also underground as part of its characteristics. Inspired by the PXSTL Structure ( figure 11), I think that "INFILL" can be presented by soft object. Therefore, instead of using normal hard boards or walls, I use soft paper tapes to represent the "INFILL". This kind of infill can be shaped as any form to connect with the framing. They are placed in both outside and inside of the design which creates the communication between external an internal of the space in order to realize occupancy of the whole space. 19

HERRING ISLAND

SITE ANALYSIS When I first time came to Herring Island, I walked around the whole island to a find the most suitable space as the site for my final project. At first, I want to choose the flat plan at the central part of the island where there are no designing difficulties brought by landform. However, in my design, the first level and the second level should be underground which will lack of natural light if I place the building of the flat ground. Therefore, I choose another space where my design project is constructed together with the landform which will not be disturbed. Furthermore, this site can not only brings plenty of natural light but also the beautiful river bank sights to the visitors. These are all the reason I choose this space as the site for my design project. 22

CONCEPTACLE

24

"To make a maze" - this is the most suitable idea I can think about for this topic when I got this topice. In my consideration, a maze is a place with a number of SECRETS. It represent mystery and unknown. And it also refer to courage and curiosity. I want to design a place burying mystery, and it attracting v i s i to r to f i n d o u t t h o s e SECRETS during the process of realizing their personal value. This is a big topic which is also hard to present. After doing research, I decide to create an underground gallery and the gallery is designed in the form of maze. There are several hollow columns that connect the on ground area. Natural light can shrine through these channel and glazing into the underground spaces

DEVELOPMENT

Acturally, when I was sketching the plan for the conceptacle model, I designed rooms at each dead end of the maze that could be used as exhibition rooms for the gallery. However, after making the sketch model, I realized few problems. Firstly, how to use those "blocks" on ground? They are seperated from the underground construciton which are irrelevant to the main theme of this design. The second problem is that due to to seperation of on ground and underground construction, it is hard to show their connection. And finally, the design of this maze is unreasonable. There is only one access point as both entry and exit which may cause crowed and occur to accident. Therefore, I refine this design to solve this problems.

FINAL DESIGN

26

Two kinds of enter points give visiotrs different kinds of spatial experiences and increase the curiosity of visiting the gallery.

lery is a three-layer g that the first and loor is embedded into dform and the third a little bit higher than zontal plane. There are fferent entries in the two entries open on floor connected to the by stairs and the last pen on the second floor tors can directly enter. nal design, I change the he maze from a normal ensional maze to a well d three-dimensional his gallery, as a threeonal, is connected by hat visitor need to go all the levels to find the reates a better spacial ce for people.

Developing from the idea of MAZE, however, there is a great different between this gallery and a real maze: instead for trapping people in the space, this gallery is designed to provide a better experience to enjoy the gallery by leading visitors a specific way to visit. In the normal maze, there is usually one entry, one exit and only way to get out. On the contray, there are three entries and few ways to visit the gallery which means that people have the chance to experience a completely different way to visit this gallery when they come here in the next time. And this is also the main idea I want to present. 27

Different kinds of material present various function and also increase the interest of the design. 28

A group of timber columns as part of walls illustrate the interaction between interanl and external spaces.

PLAN A

The idea of this project is developed from the precedent work done through out the whole semester to provide a better spacial experience for visitors. Firstly, according to the technique I have learnt from POINT / LINE / PLANE exercise, using the combination of point, line and plane can create a similar structure but completely different feeling. For the external wall of the gallery, I use some columns to replace the normal walls. As a kind of corrider, it brings communicaiton between exterior and interior. On the other hand, I use various material to create the "open space" and "closed space". As one of the main materials using for wall structure, concrete walls block the signts and provides a sense of "closed space"; on the contary, using a great amount of curtain walls can not only ensure the natural light but also open up the sense of space and easy to enjoy the scenery. 29

REFLECTION

As the first design studio I have learnt in the university, this subject gives me great impression and changes my understanding of DESIGN. Comparing to Designing Environment, Earth Studio much more focus ANALYSIS and DEVEOPMENT. Instead of telling you what the requirement is in detail, giving you a chance to try or to practice by yourself to find you personal understanding. Especially, I have no idea in the MASS task, however, after practicing in the studio I gradually understand what to do. I realize that this is the process of improving my ability of analyizing the problem by myself. On the other hand, DEVELOPMENT is another key word throughout the whole semester. We are asked to develop the first three tasks combined with the final design and develop an integrated project from zero to one. During this process, I find difficulties to use the elements for the previous works because they are completely different and individual design. After refining, I try to pick out some small but significant elements and present them to my final design. All of these are the improvement of my ability and thinking in design learnt from this subject. And I will keep thinking and practicing to become a better me as a designer. 33
