MODEL PHOTOS The POINT/LINE/PLANE model is developed from the first sketch model. The devolvement from point to line to plane and relationships among them are explored. Both curving and linear elements are included. The locations of the elements are based on a grid.

MASS DRAWING In the MASS drawing, various of voids with different sizes, shapes, accesses and lighting are created underground. Some spaces are relatively small, so people might just walk through. On the other hand, people might stay in the larger space. The drawing imitates the falling shape of an object with the influence of gravity. The different depth of space is showed by leaving blank.

MODEL PHOTOS The frame is based on a grid which is broken and extended. Elements with different folds are the infills. They are inserted into the frame by folding and wrapping. The materials of the infill elements change from transparent and light to opaque and heavy from bottom to top, which shows FRAME AND INFILL are not influence by gravity.

17

2D REPRESENTATION - DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

18

The basic frame is made up of 3 bays which is 2500 mm wide.

The frame is broken diagonally and half of the grid is extended by 1250 mm, which created the height differences.

The thickness of the frame is added. 150mm and 250mm thick members are used.

The frame on two sides are removed to create a sense of openness.

4 infill elements are inserted diagonally into the frame.

The rest 4 infill elements are inserted diagonally in another direction.

HISTORY Gallery Herring Island is a manmade island. It as made in 1928 to mitigate the effect of flooding. In 1994, it was transformed into a park. The sculptures were placed during 1997

and 2001.

SITE The pavilion will be located on the southeast of the Herring Island. It includes the highest point on the Herring Island. The main vegetation is grass, so there are sufficient buildable spaces. In addition, the site is closed to the road and the start of the punt services, so the pavilion could be seen before arriving on the island.

MODEL PHOTOS

The conceptacle models combine point/line/plane, mass and frame and infill together. The main concept is GRID, which is used in both point/line/plane and frame and infill. The descending elements in point/line/ plane, the voids underground from mass drawing and the folding elements from frame and infill model are merged to form the conceptacle.

PERSPECTIVE The design of the pavilion is based on a grid. Then the grid is related to coordinates. Combining the coordinate and secret, what occurs is a treasure map. As a result, the pavilion is about the exploration and discovering the hidden secret. From south to north, the pavilion changes from irregular to regular, from sparse to dense, from light to heavy. There are clues to the location of the secret space underground. The on ground part are extruded from the landscape and made of gray and white concrete and glass. The above ground part is suspended slabs, which are supported by the extruded volumes on ground. The underground space is created by subtraction and is made of rammed earth.

37

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The technique used to generate the form of the pavilion is superimposing the shapes and techniques used in previous projects.

In the following steps, the 1m by 1m grid will be transformed by superimposing the shapes and techniques used in previous projects.

38

+

The basic plan of the pavilion is two triangles, which is developed from the POINT/LINE/PLANE model.

+

The grid is broken and shifted which is the technique used in FRAME AND INFILL model.

+

The extrusion technique and the descending form are evolved from the CONCEPTACLE model. In addition, the height of the cubic volumes decreased from southwest to northeast.

+

The sectional MASS drawing is turned into a plan and overlaid to the pavilion. Some of the cubic elements are subtracted so that a form which seems irregular and merging into the landscape is produced. This form is used to hide the secret space.

40

The composition of the pavilion gradually become simple from north to south which lead people to find the secreat space.

3.0 REFLECTION The POINT/LINE/PLANE, MASS and FRAME AND INFILL introduced the three different spaces to me. They helped me to connect the three spaces in the final project. The different techniques and approaches used in three projects also helped me to develop the final project. Through the subject, I understood that the relationship with the site also is an important aspect of architecture. I learned different approaches, expression methods and ideas of design through the study of presidents. The feedback and advice from tutor and peers are helpful. In addition, both physical and digital drawing and model making were improved through the semester.
