Setup and more information Configuration on stage: Object 1 Object 2 Violin Bass flute _____________________________________________________________
Pictures of objects: C-vitamin (fizzies; can also be treo or other kind of medicine) Play on all parts of it: Caps (2-4 caps put together in groups to create stronger sound. You need to buy more tubes to have the caps) Tube (blow on the tube) Tablets (fizzies to put in water in pieces)
Glass (drinking glass for the c-vitamin with water in it)
Metal bowl (to put the sand or grit in; 3-5 litres) Grit (1/2-1 kilograms; sand or fine grit; ex from playground) Bow (to use on the metal bowl)
Tin can (empty food can with 2 rubber bands crossed over it. Open in one end.) Rubber band box (wooden/metal/paper box w. rubber bands crossed over) Rubber bands (to use on tin can & rubber band box; min 15; different sizes)
Gravel (1-2 kilograms; medium big grit) & Plastic bag (to put the grit into) Stones (2 stones; at least one of them flat) Leaves (at least a handfull very dry leaves) Branches (5-10 dry branches) Water (1-2 litre) Watering can (to put the water in; nicer version for table) Container (with good acoustic to pour the water into)
Pictures of electronics: Mp3-player (n eed a display to show which file is played) Voice recorder (with speed control; will be played in 0.6 tempo; Olympus is a good brand) Note: You can choose to play soundfiles from a computer, smartphone or iPad instead. And, the voice recorder can be replaced by a free app for smartphone or an audio recorder like Roland R-05 or other which usually also has speed control for playback.
Speakers (either small ones on the object table or connect to big ones in the concert hall) Audiovibe speakers (for example the brand iZound Nanobeat or Dwarf or other) Tin box (the audiovibe speaker can be played on it)
Explanations Violin Play at the nutpeg
Play with the wood part <of the bow. Shift bow.
Play on the strings so that you can hear the tones from the finger positioning. No bow.
Make an audible sound removing the metal mute.
Make a circle motion with the tip of the bow while damping all the strings.
Damp all the strings and glide with the wood part of the bow up towards the bridge.
The same technique as above but no damping.
Make a pizzicato with two fingers. Soft but strong.
Play a tone and make accents on harmonics.
Make a pizzicato on the fourth string behind the bridge
From an harmonic to normal tone to double stop.
A pizzicato arpeggio.
Play with the bow on the instrument body.
Play with the bow on the tail piece.
Molto vibrato. Smooth lines.
Play a glissando from a diminished artificial harmonic. Stay on the g#2 but glide up on the harmonics.
Damp all strings. Play short tones with hard pressure to make a sound similar to an old door.
Make a tremolo with the bow on the 1st and 2nd string on the bridge. Damp all strings. Should be no tone, only soft noise.
Fast vibrato. Small motions.
Bass flute Bass flute Play double tongue with half air, half tone.
Play white noise air tone without accent.
Play on harmonics with the 'a' as base tone. Play this with fluttertongue.
Tremolo between two different type of airy tones; one of them is a microtone. The fingering is indicated above. The last tremolo goes from 'airy' tone til air tone.
Play accent. Fr-sound.
Play keyclicks. No air. The fingerings for the microtones are indicated above. It is not necessary to play these exact notes, but the purpose is to make as many changes as possible to make a lot of noise. The dynamic is showing the effort and not the result.
Breath tone. No tone. Play accents.
Play breath tone but don't play with your mouth straight on the moutpiece. Turn your head side to side and blow air on the mouth piece to make sound. No tone.
Play vibrato. Follow the graphics; slow to fast vibrato.
Play normally from g to a. Then sing a glissando from b to a1 while playing audible keyclicks fast.
Play tones and sing at the same time. The first tone is the same in voice and flute.
Play a normal grace note. The next tone is a normal note, which is the same in both flute and voice. End the gesture outside of the flute making a shsound (like shell).
Play tongue ram.
Play high up on the harmonics which will be helped by the dynamics. Little airy sound.
While playing a glissando/bend, go from normal tone to a more airy tone. The gesture ends with a microtone. The fingering is shown above.
Play half air, half tone and play a rhythm using the diaphragm instead of tongue.
Multiphonics and microtones played on bass flute. The fingerings have been found on a webpage for Kingma flute, but these fingerings seems to be general for all bass flutes.
Object 1-2 Put fine sand in a metal bowl and make a sound through making a turning motion.
Same as above but lean the bowl in different directions.
Make the sand jump to make a percussive sound.
Play on a tin can (from food). Put two rubber band across it and play. Percussive sound is made when played on the lower side (not opened). The bands should smash against the metal. Same object as above but a soft tone, which is played on the upper side of the can (opened).
Play on the tin can. Pull up one of the bands more and more and play a pizzicato on it. The tone will be higher and higher.
Play on the metal bowl with a bow.
Instructions when to play the soundfiles on the mp3-players. This is mp3-player number 1 playing the first soundfile.
Shake caps from a cvitamin tube (the vitamins are fizzies). The sound will be similar to eggs.
This is mp3-player number 2 playing the second soundfile, the first soundfile on this mp3-player.
Blow air on to a c-vitamin tube (no cap). Airy sound.
Record the ensemble with the voice recorder (no microphones need to be plugged in).
Same as above but more precise. The dynamic is showing the effort and not the result. Crush some c-vitamins and let a piece of them into a glass of water. Practise the amount to know how much to use for specific dynamics. Same as above but damp the sound. Hold hand above or put a piece of thick paper over it. Play on a rubber band box. The box is either a wooden, paper or metal one. Put rubber band over it and try to make a different sound on each rubber band. It depends on the tension and quality of the rubber band. The first gesture is just a glissando over the whole box. Next event is the highest and lowest band at the same time.
Play up the recorded soundfile from the voice recorder but in a different speed than normally. Do the setting before so that it will be played in tempo 66% instead of 100%.
Symbols for playing and stopping the voice recorder. The 1st object player is showing the ensemble the tempo/seconds to the ensemble. It doesn't have to be big gestures but can be helpful when going from the 'electronic part' into the acoustic one. Notation of different materials that is used in the piece. 1st line: Water (poured from a can) 2nd line: Stones (grinded and hit) 3rd line: Branches (break dry ones) 4th line: Leaves (crush dry ones) 5th line: Gravel (crush with feet)
Play on an empty tube from a c-vitamin. Don't blow directly into it but let the air touch the edge to make as much sound as possible.
Make a sound that is not different from an old creaky door. Change the timbre through the vowels written below. Do all this into the c-vitamin tube. Not directly down into it but in a way that the sound gets out a bit amplified through the tube.
The soundfile 4 on the mp3-player the object player one has, shall be played through an audiovibe speaker. Audiovibe speaker is different from normal speakers. They are more powerful than most of that size and when they are put on a material they will resonate through that and change the timbre of the soundfile. When you lift this speaker up in the air, it will be almost quiet.
Use the character of the audiovibe speaker to create a more fluid sound. Change the positions of the speaker and place it on different materials while the soundfile is played. Don't forget that the speaker goes quiet when it is not touching any material. You can use a tin box or something by wood or other. Try it out alone first.

Object 2 Mp3-player –––––– 2 speaker Voice recorder ___/
SETUP for Achenar There are several options for the electronic setup in the piece Achenar. Everything depends on what kind of equipment the ensemble has or what the concert hall has. There is not just one way of doing this, so here are several different setups. Choose what suits you. One thing to think of is that the small setup wouldn't work for a really big hall. But most smaller halls will work with the smaller setup. SMALL SETUP 1.

Play on c-vitamin tube (Create a creaky scary sound with your voice & let the sound echo in the tube. The sound is created in the easiest way when you slow down the air from the lungs & let it slowly squeeze out sounding almost like an old door. Keep the tone in a low register. The vowels in brackets are the the vowels you say while you create this sound.)
