Legno battuto
Viola d'Amore Play with the bow in a circle motion on the sixth string (open string). The bow style is mezzo legno. qn means quasi niente (almost nothing).
Move the bow while you play from close to the bridge to high up on the fingerboard. Make a crescendo at the same time.
Natural harmonic. The lower staff is the played note and the staff above is the result. Play this natural harmonic on the seventh string and make a thrill between the harmonic and the open string. o in the beginning of the cresecendo means no sound at all. Play different battuto styles. The first example is played with a stiff arm; don't move the bow, just let it jump on the string with a non accelerando/ritardando. The second example is jeté-style so you will move the bow and make a ritardando and diminuendo. Play double stop with mezzo legno bow. Change bow position as well from ordinary to bridge position.
Intense part of the piece. Lower staff shows the open strings. Middle staff shows normal stopped notes and upper staff is the result of the harmonics. In the top of the example is a help if you get confused of the note values. Play on damped seventh and second string with legno bow. Change to ordinary bow style and play a natural harmonic on the second string. Play up-bow and continue the motion up and let your arm "fly" for a while. At the same time, turn around, a circle, and when you get back in first position, play double stop on open strings with legno bow again. Go from tastoposition to bridge-position.
Alternate to use voice sounds and to play on open strings (4th and 5th string). Say the sound sh (like the first sound of the city Shanghai). The dynamics of the spoken sounds should match the played sound. Here it could be like mp/p and then a diminuendo. It is not written down since it can be to much information. The rhythm of the sounds are more important than the exact sound and dynamic.
Play an artificial harmonic and make a glissando with small distances. First only quartertone up or down and then continue to make a glissando down.
Make a glissando down on artificial harmonics and when you reach the bottom, just breath in. Start with low dynamic and make a cresendo. If you don't think you can hear it, change to breath out instead.
Lower staff is open strings. Start to play a left hand pizzicato on the open first string. Afterwards you damp all the strings with your hand/fingers. Put your hand/fingers in a high-up-on-fingerboardposition. Move them towards the bridge and make a sound. When you reach bridge-position, use your voice to say "f". No voice, only sound. As before, the rhythmical function is most important. Play with the bow directly afterwards on natural harmonics on the second string.
Play with the tip of the bow on the sixth string, then touch the seventh string and stop the bow. At some points in the piece there will some texts that should be spoken. That can be done in many ways. It can be whisper, mumble or just spoken. My view of it is that most of the words can be mumbled but some words can be louder and clear. Preferably words that have some "good" sounds or that might mean something for the musician. The last word that is spoken in the piece is "radice". That is an example of a word with "good" sound. The spoken text can be connected to the other visual and more theatrical parts of the piece like turning around or looking at the audience and making voice sounds. It should be like if you were playing in your livingroom; walk around, talk to your self, experiment, enjoy playing and listen.
Play a vibrato on the fifth string while playing on the open fourth string. Follow the graphics. End the gesture with quartertones.
Play a grace note on the open sixth string and continue with a natural harmonic on the same string.
Play a transmission from normal to hard pressure on fourth and fifth string while damping them both. Play with an ordinary bow style. End the gesture with the sound "sh". End with a mezzo legno battuto on the two strings.
Play on the open sixth string with normal to medium hard pressure; soft sound. Move the bow from ordinary position to a position closer to the bridge. A grindy sound is preferable.
Play three tones at the same time. One of them is an open string. Slow down the speed of the bow while going from normal pressure to hard pressure.
The symbol that shows that you should look up from the score and notice the audience. Don't make funny face, just look up while playing.
Take down the viola d'amore and play pizzicato arpeggio in a guitarstyle. Damp all the strings and play on all of them.
Play on the lowest string behind the bridge. And afterwards an pizzicato arpeggio behind the bridge.
Play a glissando on two strings. Last in the bar, play a left hand pizzicato on the open first string.
Play a thrill between an ordinary played note and a natural harmonic in the same position.
Play natural harmonics on two strings. Play up-bow and let the hand "fly" for a while. Exaggerate the motion.
A free box. More free than the rest since there are no note values. Just play how you see the music in the box.
Symbol for turning around while playing. Go round in a circle. The duration is free.
