Formation on stage
Stage

---------------------------------------------------Group A: Clarinet in Bb & Cello The instruments are seated far away from each other; on each side of the stage. Group B: Zither, Indian harmonium & Percussion The instruments in group B are amplified. The sound should go out in two small speakers placed in front of the percussion table. The electronics played by the percussion player should be played both in the small speakers and through the 4 speakers placed in the room. The cables can be connected either to a big mixer in the hall or a small one underneath the percussion table (and from that to the big mixer). Electronic sound: 4 speakers are placed in the room; 2 on stage behind the ensemble and 2 in the back, behind the audience. The sound is in stereo but should be connected in cross: Left: Left channel Right: Right channel Left back: Right channel Right back: Left channel
Explanations Clarinet
Play a tone with a vibrato. Follow the graphics. Here it starts with a slower bigger movement.
Play a tone with a vibrato; smaller and smaller movement to no vibrato.
Play a normal tone and go gradually to half air tone. When reaching the point of half air tone, start bending the tone. Follow the graphics. Small to big glissando/bending.
Play a drill on a normal tone. After that play the flutter tongue technique while bending the tone.
Cello Natural harmonic. The lower staff is the fingering (c on the first string). The resulting tone is shown on the upper staff. The duration of the tone is shown above. It is hard to see the duration on harmonics otherwise. Make a glissando on two tones at the same time. The graphic curves show how the glissando should evolve. Always circulating around the two tones.
Play with a big vibrato while making a glissando. Follow the graphics. Make a tremolo between a normal tone and an artificial harmonic.
Percussion Play with a bow on a lampshade. Not too sharp sound.
Tap with fingers on the lampshade. Should be mellow sound.
Play on finger cymbals. Make them touch each other to get the typical sound. It can be very loud so qn (quasi niente) has to be done in a delicate way.
Play on bells in two different ways. Either with mallet or using the striker inside of the bell. There will be 4 bells with different tone, size and timbre.
Play on a lid from a saucepan. It should be a lid which is easily ringing when striked. Tap with finger.
Play on a lid from a saucepan. Tap on it and shake the lid to create a wobbling sound. The paper tube should be covered with a balloon material (very tight) and be tapped while played. Another playing method could be to grab a part of the balloon on the top, pull it away and let go. Need time to prepare this technique. Play on a big singing bowl. Play with either a normal singing bowlmallet or a normal soft mallet. The bowl is hard to play in a normal circulating way. Therefore, play with the mallet on the side to keep it ringing.
Play on the spring steels on the lamp. Percussive sound.
Play with styrofoam. Grind two pieces of styrofoam towards each other.
The tin can should have a rubber band all the way around it, across the opening (only open on one side). The size of the tin can is free of choice.
Make a sign to the harmonium player to start playing. To do that, you should check the time on the mp3-player. Give sign at 4’17.
Start the first soundfile on the mp3-player. The time of the soundfile is indicated in both score and percussion part.
Harmonium It is not possible to play over a big range on the harmonium. You are only playing with the right hand. The left hand is pumping. So, to play over a big range it is needed to come up with some solutions. Let go of the pump (natural dimenuendo), and insert a sharpened eraser on the tone e. Start the pump when the eraser is in position.
When the e should stop, let go of the pump and remove the eraser. When it is removed, start the pump again.
In the front part of the harmonium, there are 9 buttons. 5 of them are drones (1, 3, 5, 7 & 9). The rest are controlling the air in the bellow. The air buttons are not indicated. Do as you please. In this piece only drone 1 and 5 are used. To start a drone, let go of the pump and pull out. To remove drone, do the same procedure but push the button in instead of out.
To change drones, let go of pump, push the fifth button in and continue playing with the pump.
Use the pump to make the rhythm. Not the right hand. Requires practise to do it properly. Let the backside of your hand slide along the upper surface and structure of the instrument to make a rhythm. Found the best place during rehearsal and mark it. On the left side of the harmonium there is a metal part that holds the bellow together while it is in the box. It can be played on. It should not be played on too nicely. A good grip is needed.
Zither All the chords are marked with a number in the score. Place the e-bow on c#3 (sound: c#2) on the 2nd chord-section. It should be started already when placed. After placing it, play f# (F#) on the 4th chord-section. Lift and move the e-bow from one tone to another.
Play a rhythm using both hands on two different chord-sections.
Make a glissando using a tuning fork.
Playing chords on many chord-sections.
Play an arpeggio on a chord-section. One movement.
Play a defined arpeggio on the same chord-section.
