EQUIPMENT Instruments: - Percussion player uses bows, mallets and sticks - Zither/Grand Piano/Electric Guitar player uses bike rubber [inner tube of bike tire], stick & e-bows - Violin and Cello player use metal mute Notice that in the clarinet part, the multiphonics can be variations on the written multiphonics since clarinets are so different from each other. Find the best solution with as many similar tones and dynamics to the notation as possible. Electronics: - 2 Microphones for the the whole ensemble - Computer (with ProTools and/or Max/MSP) - Mixer & 2-4 speakers (2 for normal stereo, 4 for cross-stereo & more volume in the front than in the back) - Sampler/MIDI keyboard (for the pre-recorded soundfiles version) - MIDI controller (for the live-electronic version)

ZITHER/GRAND PIANO/ ELECTRIC GUITAR There are different settings on the e-bow. Normal setting is the one to the left. The setting to the right reveals the high harmonics. Damp the strings [usually you have to play first and then damp the string]. Put a nail against the string, to create a ’buzzing’ sound. Drag the bike rubber against a string on the instrument to create a screaming, piercing but still clear tone. Unspecified tone. The bike rubber is the inner tube from a bikes tire. Drag bike rubber against strings on the instrument to create a screaming, piercing but still clear tone. Specified tones. Do a hard pizzicato where the string slaps back to the fingerboard. Drop a stick [ chopstick or pen ] on the string and let it jump to create a tremolo.

ELECTRONICS

Extract from the score to show what it looks like when a soundfile should start. The first soundfile starts the whole piece.

The same as the extract example above but from the part instead. It looks different. Compact picture Extract from the part. The soundfile is played until the next soundfile starts. In those soundfiles that are in fact short, there is added some silence so that it does not loop or makes it more complicated to play precise. Either press the key on the sampler or just let the computer run.

The same extract as the one above but from the score instead of the part. This shows when to start the file in relation to the cello.

More about the electronics: The electronics in this piece can either be played live with a Max/MSP-patch or playing soundfiles, using a sampler or a computer with ProTools or other flexible program. The effects used in the patch are: Feedback, Reverb, Harmonizer and EQ. When it is played live, nothing is prepared or used as a back-up. Everything is a consequence of what the musicians are playing and how the electronics react. Someone has to control the slides in the patch so that it goes well with the music. It should enhance the music on stage. In the more safe version, only pre-recorded soundfiles are played. There are 26 soundfiles and it is indicated when to press play. The sound level has to be set during rehearsals so that it matches the acoustic sound. It should melt together. Since this isn't related to what the musicians actually are playing (like in the live-electronic version) the sound level has to be set carefully. Choose what version you prefer and read more about it here below:

Soundfiles

Sampler

Playing device (ProTools or other)

Upload the soundfiles to the sampler and assign the files to a key each. To make it easier, you could mark each key with the soundfile number.

Import all the soundfiles to an audio program and bookmark each one to make it easier to switch between.

Live-electronics (Max/MSP)

Playing device (Max/MSP or other)

Helpful equipment (MIDI controller or other)

Use the patch for Euphorbia that is called Play Machine. You can also choose to play the piece with external effects but that might be harder to control

You can either choose to control everything from the computer or through an external midi controller.

The electronics in Euphorbia is made in Max/MSP. It can also be done with external effects (EQ, Reverb, Harmonizer and Feedback/Distorsion) controlled by a mixer, or similar. All the electronics is improvised and live. It is reacting on the instruments so you have to be careful and react quickly if there is a peak in the volume. If that happens, the electronics could be hard to control. In the box with instructions to play the soundfile, there are also instructions for the live-electronic; in this case: Reverb & Harmonizer. Play freely but with the intention to enhance the character of the music the musicians are playing. It is a possible to either play a soundfile or a live sound through the effects in the patch. You can also record what you are playing in 3 different ways: 1. Mix of the soundfile or live sound & the electronics (effects) in stereo 2. All electronics (effects) separated into 4 channels (Reverb, Feedback, EQ & Harmonizer) 3. Soundfile / Live sound & electronics in 4 channels (1-2: Sound source & 3-4: Electronics)

The bow is in normal position. Move it to molto sul tasto while playing G (open string). When the bow is molto sul tasto you let it touch also the D-string.

Place your finger below the bow. Slide back from and towards the bridge (ponticello) and play the harmonic spectra.
