MARIMBA SOLO

D U R A T I O N: 5’00

Commissioned by Ellen Sjö-Sander with support from Kulturbryggan, Sweden

–2014–

SETUP Marimba Range A-c4 (Nordic def.) or a2-c7 (US def.) Equipment - Mp3-player/phone - Small speaker, to fit in a resonator tube, with or without bluetooth (practical without cables). Place to stand on tape underneathn and inside the resonator tube. - Spoons/forks/keys to hang on a stand - Rubber bands (one big & several thin), tin foil, pearls (in a necklace or free), buttons & thread - Bow, mallets (soft, medium & hard), chop stick & steel brush Electronics Mp3-player/Phone [Play 3 sound files. In total 1’00] 1. 25 seconds (+ 0’50 silence)

2. 20 seconds (+ 0’50 silence)

3. 15 seconds (+ 1’15 silence)

EXPLANATIONS Play with a steel brush inside of a resonator tube (B in Nordic definition or b2 in US definition). Make a circle motion with the brush inside of the tube.

Play with a mallet inside of a resonator tube (b in Nordic definition or b3 in US definition). Make a circular motion with the mallet inside of the tube.

Find three different spots on the resonator tubes and play on it with a mallet. Choose the resonator tubes where it is easy to find the spots.

Play on a resonator tube either with a knuckle or a mallet. Any tube will work.

Tap with fingers on the bars. More flesh than nail on the finger.

Play with a bow with the right hand. The left hand snaps the rubber band wrapped around the g#-bar. Let the rubber band stay on g# throughout the whole piece.

Play on g# with at mallet. The tone is prepared with a rubber band wrapped around the bar.

Damp the bars with the mallet while you drag it along the bars. Choose a hard mallet to make a sound. Other options are to damp the bars with your left arm and drag a mallet along them. The specific pitch is not the most important.

Blow air on the bars. Non specific pitch but blow in a way that the friction creates a sound. The angle is the key.

Blow air on one of the resonating tubes . No specific tube but blow in a way that the friction creates a sound. The angle is the key.

Play with a bow on a string in between the bars. No specific place.

Hang a dozen of spoons/forks/keys on a stand in front of the marimba. Attach a thin rubber band on each object. That will keep them in place. Then hang all the objects on either a flower stick, a string or a coathanger.

Start a soundfile by pressing play on the mp3-player lying on the note stand. The speaker connected to the mp3-player is situated inside and at the bottom of a resonating tube.

Place objects like buttons and pearls (put on a thread to not roll away) on a piece of tin foil. Make it ready to just put on the bars when it is time to prepare it.

Play on the bars prepared with objects on tin foil with a mallet.

Play with a mallet on a bar. Hold a piece of cardboard underneath the bar, above the resonating tube. Let it touch the edge of the tube to make a buzzing sound while playing with the mallet on the bar. The best angle is when the cardboard is touching the bar and the resonating tube in a 45 degree angle. Play with a mallet on a bar. Hold a piece of cardboard underneath the bar, above the resonating tube. Move it away and back to make a vibrato.

Make a f-sound yourself at the same time as you play with mallets on the bars.

Play with a mallet on a part of the hanging construction of the resonators, on the right side of the metal rack. Let it ring in the resonating tubes.

Play with a mallet on the right leg of the metal rack.

Play with a chop stick on the right leg. Drag it along the leg to make a swish-sound.
