Percussion Indian harmonium __________________________________________________________________________________ The piece is inspired by a Maltese poem by Alfred Grech: Musbieħi isfar lellux u f'moħħi
Lampa, gul krysantemum och tankar Lamp, yellow chrysanthemum and thoughts
Jintefa d-dawl u taqa' dalma kbira
Släcker ljuset och sprider mörkret Turns of the light and spreads the darkness
U bħal fi nżul ix-xemx iterrqu lura

To tune: Find the position for the highest and lowest bridge. Place the other bridges evenly in between them. Tune the strings when the bridges are attached. Fine tune with the bridges.
Percussion Feng gong (Also known as wind gong.
Sizes from 50 centimetres or more)
Cymbal (On a stand) Drum
(Mellow sound, with a skin that gives a friction when using a superball mallet. "Deep lion's roar" kind of sound)
Styrofoam (Flat surfaces) Office lamp
(Playing on spring steels, shade surface & shade edge)
Bowl (steel) with LECA-marble (expanded clay aggregate) structure:
LECA-marble
can be replaced by small stones:
Equipment: Superball mallet Several 'normal' mallets Stick Bow Steel brush Rosin (for the bow)
Grade of "lion's roar"-sounds: Long, stable and dynamic sound - Feng gong (with superball mallet) Medium long to short sound - Drum (with superball mallet)
Indian harmonium Range C-f2 Uses 4 drones (g#, a#, c# & d#) Other techniques used are: - bellow sounds (air) - blow air on keys - drag nails along the upper surface of the instruments - make a "pizz" on the metal part holding the bellow in place when it is closed
EXPLANATIONS In general Turn the light on.
Turn the light off.
Tap on the instrument with your finger. Good wood sound.
Zither The number indicates which section of strings this tone will be in. Sometimes it is possible to find a tone in several sections. This is a pizzicato (with fingers).
Play the first tone as a slap (hit other strings or the instrument body) and the other ones as pizzicato. The tone is found in section number 3.
Place an e-bow on g#1 in section 2. The tone will start sounding after a while. The circle in the beginning of the crescendo means that it starts from nothing (no dynamic). When you are using 3 e-bows you need to keep track on which ebow is moving where. These are my suggestions. If you come up with another solution, it is fine. Here you move one e-bow from b1 in section 5 to g#2 in section 6.
Glide up and down with the e-bow on the c-string in section 4. Be careful the e-bow does not fall of.
Solo part with box notation. It is a free part where the zither is playing a solo on the tone c in section 4. Because that string is very loose the timbre variations are many. The dynamics is notated as 'free' but means 'ad libitum'. Play with different sound quality. The other musicians will follow your command.
Place the e-bow on the c-string in section 4 over the acoustic hole.
Put your nail against the vibrating string. Not to hard towards the string so that it stops, but lightly to make a 'buzzing' sound.
There are 3 e-bows placed on the strings. Place also a thin piece of paper over the strings (one or more pieces of paper). It will make the tones sound less but there will be an extra sound added instead.
Remove the piece of thin paper from the strings. The sound will grow bigger now.
Drag your nails along the b-string in section 1.
Use a piece of an inner tire from a bike and make a fast gliding motion over a string (choose one that is making a sound always). The prefereable sound is a sharp qwerky sound. Blow air on the instrument. The friction of the air passing through the strings will make a soft but audible airy tone. The notes does not indicate any register but is more the motion over the instrument. From left to right and back.
Guzheng Play a tone with the right hand (pizzicato) and make a vibrato with the left hand on the same string on the other side of the bridge. You make vibrato when you push the string downwards. Easiest way is if you push with 2 or 3 fingers together. Bending technique is almost like vibrato but you push further down and will reach another note. Only one motion for going up and one for going down.
Let your right hand rest on the side (wooden part) and play pizzicato in a more controlled way than if your hand is upright. Make a small and short vibrato on each tone when you play these tones (pizzicato). Vibrato technique (see on the previous explanation). Bending technique is almost like vibrato but you push further down and will reach another note. Only one motion for going up and one for going down.
Choose a string on the left side of the bridges and drag your nails along it to make a noisy sound.
Play on the string on the left side (LS) of the bridges. Only the first note. The second one is in normal position. Make your hand flat and move it in a circular motion from a high register and down on the strings. Follow the graphic score. The specific tones are not important. You will not hear the pitch. It will sound like an old LP-player. Touch the upper surface of the instrument (underneath the strings) with your hand. Make circular motions. First with one hand and then with both.
Do the circular motion on the strings with the right hand and touch the instrument body (underneath the strings) with the left hand.
Cello
Natural harmonic. Notation below and sound above.
Play on the tail piece. First example is a real tone. The second one is with lower bow pressure so the result is a more noisy and softer sound.
Play a tremolo with the bow on the instrument body.
Damp all the strings and play on the 1st and 2nd string with the bow in a circular motion. Move the bow towards the 2nd and 3rd string and make a crescendo.
Play double stop on one open 1st string and the 2nd string. Make a vibrato on the second string and follow the graphics.
Make a transmission from normal to hard pressure while playing a drill between A and B.
Play a drill between E and an artificial harmonic on E. Make a glissando upwards.
Play legno battuto while doing a glissando. Play natural harmonics with a half hair/half wood on the bow.
Make a slap and do a glissando. After that an artificial harmonic with the bow.
Damp all strings and make a pizzicato arpeggio down. From high to low tone.
Play a tremolo and repeat the gesture as long as the arrow indicates. The free dynamic means 'ad lib'. The zither is playing a solo and will be leading the dynamic flow.
Play a tremolo between natural harmonics. End the gesture with a left hand pizzicato.
Use the tip of the bow to play a soft tremolo. Move the tip of the bow in circles.
_______________________________________________________ Percussion
Damp the cymbal lightly and tap with your fingers.
Tap with your fingers on the drum skin while damping.
Play with a bow on the cymbal. The timing should be prepared.
Drag a stick on the surface of the cymbal. The dynamic is 'free' but means that it is 'ad lib.'. The zither is playing a solo and is leading the dynamic. Follow.
Play with a superball mallet on the drum. Accent while doing a circle motion.
Use a stick on the side of the drum to make an accelerando. The dynamic is lead by the zither. But the sound in this case should be heard. Extrovert sound.
Use a superball mallet on a feng gong. Make a circle motion around the surface. Control the dynamic.
As previous comment but with 'free dynamic'. Follow the zither.
Make an accent with the styrofoam. Short and direct.
Move two bits of styrofoam against each other in a circle motion. Possiblity to make dynamic change.
Use your voice and make the sound 'sch'.
Touch the lampshade with your hand to make a soft styrofoam-sound. If you can't make it sound: Find another solution.
Knock on the lampshade with your knuckle. Be careful so it doesn't fall of.
Play with a bow on the edge of the lampshade.
Play with a bow on the edge of the lampshade and move the bow in circles. The sound will not be as clear as the previous comment. It will be more noisy. Tremolo.
Play with a bow on the lampshade in circles. It will be mostly no tone but more noise. Tremolo.
Use a tool (stick, brush, end of bow...) to make a 'ritsch'sound on the spring steel on the lamp.
Play on the spring steel with your fingers. A shorter sound than the previous one.
Put some LECA in a metal bowl and make them jump.
Have LECA in a metal bowl and let them smoothly glide in the bowl in a circle motion.
_______________________________________________________ Indian harmonium Play with 2 drones. Prepare so the drone buttons are active before you start pumping the bellow.
Add one drone to the 2 previous drones.
Make the bellow go in. No drones should be out.
Take out the bellow to fill the airbag underneath.
The lower staff shows the drones and the upper staff means the right hand playing. Take away one drone.
First play a tremolo and then only use the bellow to make air sound. Right after play normally but be careful with the bellow since the airbag will be quite full.
Make a crescendo from nothing and play the tone as long as the arrow indicates. Follow the graphics and technique instructions. The graphics show the intensity of the bellow tremolo.
Blow on the keys and use the friction to make an audible sound. Blow from low register and up and back.
In the free part: play 3 tones freely and the dynamic is 'free' but means 'ad lib.'. The zither is playing a solo so listen and follow. Improvise with the dynamics and react to the zither.
To be able to play a big chord, let go of the bellow. Prepare so that the bellow will have air when you stop pumping.
Play a small and intense bellow tremolo.
Play a very rhythmical bellow tremolo.
Play on the metal part that is holding the bellow in place when it is packed the bag. You can play it like pizzicato.
Drag your hand with nailside down over the wooden surface of the instrument. When your nails are touching the wood pattern on top of the instrument, it will make a percussive sound. After that sound, play a bellow-in sound.
