Characters: Nina D (soprano) & Will S (tenor) & Narrator (mezzo soprano)

ACT I Scene 1 Instrumental intro [A white blanket of snow is prevalent everywhere.]

Choir: Sounds [Aaah.Ssch.Mm.]

[A shiny silver vehicle waiting. A man and woman come walking. Elegant. The woman receives a rose from the man..When the man turns around, she puts a finger to her mouth. She has stung herself on the rose. They sit in the car. The man sees that she sucks on her finger.]

Will: Is it bad?

Nina: Not really.

[She smiles and shows her finger, where a diamond ring sparkles.]

Nina: It is just a little sting.

[They start their journey Projections of landscape on paper bricks around and on the stage.]

[Passing the urban environment. A sign that says Bayonne. The woman watches the man. The man does not notice anything. Ecstatic about his power over the vehicle which he worships. The woman tries to give him a jam ball in his mouth. He refuses, spits and turns his head away. The woman is bleeding and exhausted. She connects the finger with a handkerchief and then hold the left arm with her hand and falls asleep. She wakes up and have blood on her clothes. She let the arm hang outside the window, convinced that the icy wind from the fields would have a healing effect.]


Nina: If someone wants to find us, it will be easy. He only needs to follow the traces of my blood in the snow.

[Then she thinks about what she said, and her face blushes in the first light of dawn.]

Nina: Imagine, a trace of blood in the snow, the whole way from Madrid to Paris. Wouldn’t it be nice for a song?

[Nina’s song] Nena: He came, he saw and followed. Followed my trace in the snow. A snow which had the colour. The colour of love, life, despair. He could not resist to find the source. He could not resist my trace. My trace of blood is visible the whole way from Madrid to Paris.

[They continue to travel. They are passing a sign that says Paris. At that point, the woman bleeds unchecked.]


Nina: My life is running out of me. [She speaks aloud to herself]

[The man turns towards the woman. Becomes terrified. He calls out. Stops the car. Honks and looks desperately around him. Tries to lift the woman, but she is completely gone.]

Scene 2 [The man rushes out of the car and end up quite suddenly in a chaos of people. He tries to see any help. When there is no help to see, he instead tries to take himself back to the car.]

[When the man touches the car, the chaos around him stops. He turns around and sees that a green cross is lit. Someone has noticed him, and comes with a stretcher. He must speak to several people, but it is impossible to hear because it drowns in the music. Even the woman is questioned by a nurse. The man picks up the woman's handbag in the car and he presses her hand when he comes back with it to her. A new doctor comes to examine her.]

[Electronics & Choir] Choir: Psst‌[sounds]

Nina: Don’t get scared. The worst thing that can happen is that this cannibal cuts off my hand and eats it.

Scene 3 [The doctor takes away the woman and puts up a hand to stop the man. The man stays without knowing what he will do, looks at the empty corridor in which the woman was brought away. He sits down on a wooden bench and falls asleep.]

Aria III: The sky surrender (Taivas nĂśyrtyy) Pentti Saarikoski

The sky surrenders and thoughts does not bring us anywhere we are constantly lost -----------------------------Scene 4 [He tries to get information but nobody seems to notice him. He goes out of the hospital but all is chaos around him and he flees back to the hospital. He is like on the run. He does not know what to do. The woman has all the information he needs and he does not know where she is. In fact, the woman had intense care but dies two days later. It is possible to see her on the small stage in the back of the stage, where she dies in agony.]

[Will’s song] Will: He came, him the fool, and strangled. Strangled the love of his life. A life of which he's not worthy. If worthy was ever for him.

How can I ever go on? Give me a chance to start over.

[At the same time as the woman is dying, the man lives in chaos and cannot find her. Everything becomes grayer after her death, and everything is harder. Even the man gets harder. After one week, someone ( a doctor at the hospital) tells him the truth. At this point, he has no feelings left. He sees the dead woman but leaves at once.]

Explanations

The grade of accidentals.

Dynamics. The circle means ’nothing’/’zero’. ’qn’ means quasi niente (almost nothing in Italian)

Voices

Say the text instead of singing it. There is a specific tone behind, so try to control the speaking voice.

Sing while breathing in.

Whisper.

Sing normally but with an airy tone. Leaking tone.

Normal singing.


Flute Air tone. No normal tone and no attack in the beginning of the air tone. Different from breath tone.

A transmission from normal tone to air tone.

Bend the tone according to the graphics. Like a glissando.

Double tongue. Rhythmical.

Play flutter tongue.

Play a tone with half air. A tone leaking air.

Play a quarter tone flat tone in a dynamic crescendo from nothing (zero).

Play slap tongue.

Play tongue ram.

Play whistle tones. If the octave is not working or if you are more comfortable playing whistle tones on another flute size: change it!

Play breath tones in an accelerando phrase. Accentuated attack.


Clarinet

Play a tone with vibrato. Follow the graphics.

A part of a bass clarinet solo. Starts with a bended tone. Stop playing and say a hushing sound and continue to play again.

Play a tone with half air. A tone leaking air.

A transmission from normal tone to air tone.

Play slap tongue.

Play a tremolo between two air tones.

Play a semi high tone with a thin timbre. A thin tone. Start playing with an ’almost nothing’-dynamic.

Play double tongue. Rhythmical.

Percussion

Play an accelerando motion using fingers on a drum.


Play an accelerando motion using stick on a drum.

Play guiro in a normal way. One motion.

Play styrofoam in a circular motion.

Play the Noah bell, either in a normal way, or remove the inner stick and play with a mallet. Hit on different spots on the bell to get the dissonance. On Noah bells, the lower the number, the bigger the bell.

Play a Noah bell in a dynamic phrase.

Play a Noah bell. Hit on different spots on the bell to get the dissonance.

Piano

Place an e-bow on a string. Start it before placing it.

Place and lift can either be realized actually lifting the e-bow to make a diminuendo or using the pedal, but that will effect all the sounds in the piano.

When you use the e-bow, the tone will be ringing and vibrating. Put a nail towards the string to make a buzzing sound.

Play a pizzicato inside the piano. One string.


Play on a tone with a stick. It could be a chopstick. Let it fall on the string and control it with your fingers. Relaxed but firm. Best technique is to have the palm of your hand to face upwards. Play a sharp sound using a piece of an inner tire from a bike tire. An old tire is better than a new one. Try to get it for free from a bike store. Drag the bike rubber piece along the string, not too forced, and let the tone ring. It will take some time for it to start. Practise this technique several times to feel comfortable .

Try to make a wobbling sound using the pedal. Do not press it down completely. Then the sound will dissapear. So from all the way down to half up is good.

Play with your nails along the keys in a motion from low to high register. Click sound. You can choose if you want to play it on the upper side of the keys or on the front side.

Hit many strings inside the piano with the palm of your hand. Keep it on the strings to damp them and glide up. Hit the piano with a knuckle on the wood. Use the pedal to make the first hitting motion audible

Violin

Play on the e-string behind the bridge. The dynamics goes from ’nothing’.

Play a variation of playing techniques: pizzicato, mezzo legno battuto, arco battuto‌ The other instruments do the same so the variation of timbre will change a lot in this part.


Play a motion of long tones and jetĂŠ-phrases.

Damp all strings and play jetĂŠ-phrases.

Play double stops and also a left hand pizzicato on the highest string.

Play fast vibrato. It is different from molto vibrato which has big motions. Fast vibrato is small but fast motions.

Play with the bow on the fingerboard. Tha bow technique is mezzo legno tratto.

Play two natural harmonics; one sounding one octave higher and one on the same note as the one being played.

Play a phrase with natural harmonics.

Play a tremolo motion between a normal tone and a natural harmonic on the same position as the normal tone.

Play a normal tone on the lowest string and let the bow touch the instrument body. Will result in a soft noise sound.


Play legno battuto in an accelerando motion.

Play legno tratto.

Play mezzo legno tratto. Play a quarter tone flat tone in a dynamic crescendo from nothing (zero).

Play with a light bow pressure.

Hit all the strings with the palm of your hand on the fingerboard, so that the strings are damped, and glide up towards the bridge. And hit the instrument body.

Play on a string up close to the nut. Sometimes it is easier to play on the second highest strings. Try to keep the tone still.

Play with the bow on the tail piece. A dark and mellow sound.

Cello

Play a glissando on artificial harmonics with the wooden part of the bow.

Play a variation of playing techniques: pizzicato, mezzo legno battuto, arco battuto‌ The other instruments do the same so the variation of timbre will change a lot in this part.


Damp all strings and play pizzicato and also jetĂŠ-phrases behind the bridge.

Play on two strings and make a vibrato. Follow the graphics. It starts in the lowest possible dynamic.

Play a phrase with natural harmonics.

Play a normal tone on the lowest string and let the bow touch the instrument body. Will result in a soft noise sound.

Hit the body with a knuckle or finger tip.

Play on the tail piece with the bow. A dark and mellow sound.

Play with the bow near the bridge.

Play an artificial harmonic with a slow bow motion.

Play a double stop with natural harmonics.
