129th Annual Report 2015-16

The Paris Basis The continuing basis of the work and witness of the Young Men's Christian Association is expressed in the Paris Basis, as adopted by the delegates of the First World Conference in Paris in 1855, and reaffirmed by the 6th World Council of YMCAs in 1973:

“The Young Men's Christian Associations seek to unite those young men who, regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour, according to the Holy Scriptures, desire to be his disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of his Kingdom amongst young men. Any differences of opinion on other subjects, however important in themselves, shall not interfere with the harmonious relations of the constituent members and associates of the World Alliance.”

Mission Statement of YMCA Thrissur “The Young Men’s Christian Association of Thrissur seeks to unite young men, women, boys and girls for the development of their physical, social, intellectual and spiritual manhood/womanhood, to inspire them with the ideals of Jesus Christ and to lead them to His discipleship and cooperate with the church and other organizations working for the welfare of India and to stimulate the formation of movements for the highest advancement of humanity.”

129th Annual Report 2015-16

The President’s Message Dear Members and Friends, YMCA Thrissur has been continuing our path of exponential growth this year also as we did in the recent past few years. The year began with something special happening that has added a colourful feather to our cap. A significant turning point was that; with regards to our YMCA Youth Centre at the Multi-Project Centre at Kannara, the Main Hall and the four Mini-Halls were officially blessed and named by His Grace Dr. Mar Aprem in September 2015 by God’s grace. The main hall was named ‘CJ Palu Memorial YMCA Hall’ and the four mini-halls were named as follows – T P Timothy Memorial Spring Hall (sponsored by Dr. T T Paul), Emke Silks Summer Hall (sponsored by Mr. M A Shanavas), KT Francis & Mary Francis Kunnath Autumn Hall (sponsored by Prof. P C Thoams) and Lavish Home Winter Hall (sponsored by Mr. Ouseph T L). Our immense gratitude and appreciation goes to all the sponsors of the Centre. I take this opportunity to pay my homage to our dear Late Mathew Mampilly, past President and Board Member of YMCA Thrissur, who was a very active and irreplaceable member of the Board. Infact though the Hall Naming Ceremony was held during my tenure, it was under his tenure and efforts, a major part of the final works of the Youth Center were finished. I must specially thank the Chairmen and members of the various Standing Committees had done a very commendable job in organizing the various programs of our YMCA distinctively. The most noticeable among them were ‘Fly High,’ the week long Children’s Summer Day Camp which we were able to successfully conduct for the second time this year. Commendable among the programs were the Hiroshima Day, Mandela Day and the Patriotic Song Competition organized by the Programs & Youth Work Committee. I also extend my gratitude to the all the Members of the Board for their trust in my Presidentship and their unrelenting support during the past two years. They all have done a commendable job with the organizing and conduct of the various programs of our YMCA. I also thank each and every one of our Members who had taken an active part in supporting our programs with their presence and also resources. As the whole world is in the Olympic fever, may I share a little history of the YMCA and Olympics. Did you know that the Indian Olympic Association was established in India in 1927 by Sir Dorabjii Tata with the support of Dr. A G Noehren the then Physical Education Director of YMCA. The first Indian Olympic team was trained by H C Buck, Principal of the YMCA College of Physical Education, Madras, who was also the manager for team India at the 1924 Paris Olympics. The Olympic Games is not just about sports and medals, it also has inspiring lessons for our lives. The creed of the Olympic Games says “not to win but to take part” and “the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well." In the spirit of the Olympics, the most important thing is to have taken part fairly, and to have done one's best. This is what the Olympic Games are really about, and some might say it's what life is really about as well. This shall be my farewell message to you as my term as the President and also as a Board Member of YMCA comes to an end. As YMCA members the spirit of the Olympic games is a big lesson for us because it is about doing our part with all sincerity without any profit motives. What do you think? Thank you all once again.

Dr. T T Paul 3
