128th Annual Report 2014-15

The Paris Basis The continuing basis of the work and witness of the Young Men's Christian Association is expressed in the Paris Basis, as adopted by the delegates of the First World Conference in Paris in 1855, and reaffirmed by the 6th World Council of YMCAs in 1973:

“The Young Men's Christian Associations seek to unite those young men who, regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour, according to the Holy Scriptures, desire to be his disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of his Kingdom amongst young men. Any differences of opinion on other subjects, however important in themselves, shall not interfere with the harmonious relations of the constituent members and associates of the World Alliance.”

Mission Statement of YMCA Thrissur “The Young Men’s Christian Association of Thrissur seeks to unite young men, women, boys and girls for the development of their physical, social, intellectual and spiritual manhood/womanhood, to inspire them with the ideals of Jesus Christ and to lead them to His discipleship and cooperate with the church and other organizations working for the welfare of India and to stimulate the formation of movements for the highest advancement of humanity.”

128th Annual Report 2014-15

The President’s Message Dear Members and Friends, India’s ‘missile man’ Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam once remarked, “If you want to shine like the sun then first you must burn like the sun.” Dr. Kalam was an erudite teacher who taught us to start dreaming in order to achieve great things. And in that quest for success, we have to burn like the sun and face difficulties and be persistent on the job. For the Thrissur YMCA, this has been a year where many of our YMCA members have been burning like the sun to make our Thrissur YMCA’s dream come true. Therefore, it gives me great joy to address you all, as the President of YMCA Thrissur which has been on the path of exponential growth in the recent past. This year the Chairmen and members of the various Standing Committees had done a very commendable job in organizing the regular programs of our YMCA distinctively. In addition, this year is special in many ways, since we have initiated several new social projects and organized innovative programs for the youth. The most noticeable among them were ‘Fly High,’ the week long Children’s Summer Day Camp which ended with many children requesting us to have the program every year. Another highlight of this year was the Inter-Faith Prayer Meet in tribute to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam where religious leaders from various faiths prayed and paid homage to him in the presence of a large gathering of our members. Our International Guest House at Palace Road now has a new look with the installation of TV sets in all the rooms and setting up of dormitory facility. The International Guest House and offices have been put under 24x7 CCTV surveillance. This year was also a turning point with regards to our YMCA Youth Centre at the Multi-Project Centre at Kannara. By God’s grace, the main hall at the centre will be officially named ‘CJ Palu Memorial Hall’ on 13th September this year along with the four a/c mini-halls which will be named as desired by their respective sponsors. In addition, a prayer hall has also been made ready at the Centre. I have to specially thank the Board of Directors of our YMCA for their whole-hearted support they have given me, especially Er. Francis Chandy, Mr. Joy George Chiriankandath and Mr. Joju Manjila and for their efforts in supervising the completion of the work at the International Center. Our immense gratitude and appreciation goes to all the sponsors of the Centre, especially Mr. Jose Chiriankandath. I also take this opportunity to thank all the Members of the Board and YMCA Members who have done a commendable job in organizing a wide range of programs for our YMCA. Without their help we could not have done what we did and would not have been selected as the ‘Best Metro YMCA’ of this year by the YMCA South West India Region. Let me end with a truly inspiring quote of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.” Let the YMCA and its members be the fires that glow and shed goodness. Thank you all once again. Dr. T T Paul 3

YMCA GOLDEN HOUR AWARD 2015 YMCA Golden Hour Awards were given to Police Officers KP Shibu and A Ratheesh with the Thrissur Traffic Police Station. What these Police officers did, was an act of pure grit and skill when they drove 14 kms on a motor bike, with a critically ill man sitting between them, to reach a hospital in the nick of time. The man was immediately admitted in the ICU and consequently his life was saved. The person in critical stage was en route to a hospital when his vehicle was caught in a 7 km long traffic block near Pattikad on the Thrissur-Palakkad Highway. On being approached for help, these policemen who were actually on their way for special duty at the Peechi Police station decided to act without delay. There was no way that they could make a way for the patient's vehicle through the long winding traffic block. The only option was to whizz thru the traffic jam on their motor bike. And that’s what they did. Remember the scene from 3 Idiots where Amir Khan takes his friend’s father to a hospital on a scooter? Well, it was something like that what happened here. Medical professionals might disapprove this mode of transport, but it did save the poor man's life. Therefore the YMCA decided to show the community's appreciation to these policemen for their act of humanity. 10

INTER-FAITH PRAYER MEET AND TRIBUTE TO DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM With the sudden and sad demise of the beloved Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, India has lost an eminent scientist, inspiring orator, prolific writer, great scholar, visionary leader and a respected statesman. Dr. Abdul Kalam’s words and actions were in tandem and that was the reason he became beloved to all the children of our country. His life shall continue to inspire generations yet to come. As a mark of our profound respect to the late Dr. Kalam, we organized an Inter-Faith Prayer Meet on July 30, Thursday, the day of his funeral, at 7.00 pm. We have been giving a monthly educational scholarship to children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. This program is in co-operation with TNP+ (Trichur Network of Positive Persons) which is a self-help group of People Living with HIV/AIDS. We take this opportunity to request our members to contribute towards this fund to ensure continuity of the project.

EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT OF TRIBAL CHILDREN The objective of Project for Educational Empowerment of Tribal Children is to support the education of the tribal children including boys and girls who would have other-wise lived a life of seclusion and ignorance in their jungle hamlets. The program will also help in the enhancement of their soft skills and open up chances of better social integration. The program will enable the tribal children to avail resources for books, school stationary, uniforms, nutritious food and such necessary things that would ensure that they go on to successfully finish their high school. We have been supporting 28 children this academic year 2014-15 directly through this program and our mission is to enable them to complete class 12. These children are originally inhabitants of the tribal colonies of Kadapara and Thaliyakkal (in Palakkad District) and are studying in various schools in Kannara near our International Centre. They have been offered residence at Akasaparavakal (Birds of the Air) Orphanage, Chennaipara and Alvernia Boys Home, Kannara for which we are thankful to Fr. George and Brother Johnson respectively. For this first year (2013-14) the YMCA of Ajman has partnered with us and has sponsored all the 28 children. We are extremely thankful to all the members, Directors and office bearers of Ajman YMCA. For the second year (2014-15) YMCA Greenville (USA) sponsored the children. We are thankful to Ms. Jamie Inman, Vice-President of YMCA Greenville, for their support. 11
