YMCA Calgary is a hard working charitable organization. Our mission is to promote the spiritual, mental, physical and social development of individuals, and to foster a sense of responsibility in the community.

A community-supported organization providing access to all Calgarians Along with donations raised through various campaigns, fees for programs, services, admissions and memberships are invested right back into the organization to help maintain facilities, deliver programs, and provide fee assistance to those in need. Our fee assistance program helps support Calgarians with: program, membership, child care, and day (and overnight) camp fees.

A dedicated community delivering gym, swim, leadership and needs-driven programming Our Community YMCA branch offers need-driven programs that respond to the social and emotional needs of the community. These Community YMCA programs include Aboriginal, atrisk youth, math tutoring, leadership, ESL and New Canadian settlement programs.

A place to connect, belong, grow and thrive. Our spaces allow us to deliver programs, services and opportunities to help the Calgary community connect with others, build life-long skills, and keep active and healthy. WE INCORPORATE PHYSICAL LITERACY INTO ALL OUR PROGRAMS

PHYSICAL LITERACY

101

Have you heard of the term physical literacy? We don’t take the term lightly. Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and confidence required to participate in regular physical activity and play a sport. YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose. Those who are physically literate are comfortable in all physical environments: on the ground (eg. running, throwing balls); in the water (eg. swimming); on snow and ice (eg. skating and skiing); in the air (eg. moving in the air without support - ie., jumping/ spinning in the air); and in the outdoors (eg. movement on uneven surfaces).

Start early. It’s important to build a foundation of physical literacy. The early years are the best time to start. You can continue to build these skills through life.

4

Be active for life.

It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life.

PHYSICAL LITERACY AGES & STAGES Start by developing a good base of foundational skills. Developing physical literacy skills is progressive, and different at each developmental stage.

Once a foundation of skills is built, youth can choose to build specific skills to participate in competitive sport. In these stages, youth can begin to develop sport-specific skills while still continuing to build physical literacy skills.

OR skip competitive sport and simply choose physical activities to be active for life. Once a good foundation of physical literacy is built, anyone can confidently participate in a variety of sports and activities - with the goal of being active for life!

BOYS 0 - 6 GIRLS 0 - 6 Learn basic movement skills and link them together to play. Develop habits for being active.

BOYS 12-16 GIRLS 11 - 15 TRAIN TO TRAIN Build aerobic base and consolidate sport-specific skills.

BOYS 6 - 9 GIRLS 6 - 8 Learn fundamental movement skills and build agility, balance and coordination.

BOYS 9- 12 GIRLS 8- 11 Convert fundamental movement skills to fundamental sport- specific skillls.

BOYS 16 - 23 GIRLS 15 - 21

BOYS 19 GIRLS 18+

TRAIN TO COMPETE Train to solidify sportspecific/position-specific skills and physical capabilities.

TRAIN TO WIN Refine skills with the ultimate goal to win.

AGES 12+ ACTIVE FOR LIFE

Life-long participation in a variety of sport or recreational activities.

Are your kids physically literate?

Take the physical literacy quiz: http://activeforlife.com/educating-parents-physical-literacy

Physical literacy stages have been adapted from the Active for Life and Canadian Sport for Life models.

Active for Life is a non-profit organization committed to helping parents raise happy, healthy, physically literate kids. For more information on physical literacy, please visit activeforlife.com.

progression

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHAT SWIM LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD? our progression chart and level  Use descriptions on page 15 & 16. If you have observed your child in the water, use the descriptions on the following pages to determine what level is right for your child. With the exception of Star Leadership 7, our unparented swim programs have two levels in each swim class. Once your child can confidently complete the skills in the first level they will move to the next (for example, once Bobbers successfully complete their skills, they move to Floaters). Depending on skill level, your child can be enrolled in the second level to start.

View your child’s lesson or ask your child’s swim instructor on the last day of lessons where to place your child for the next session.

  

Use your child’s online swim report card to determine what skills match which level. Contact your local YMCA and speak with a certified swim instructor.

Book a swim assessment with one of our aquatics team members or drop-in during our regular swim lessons - it’s free! If your child is under 8 years old, you must be in the water with your child during the assessment.

To access your child’s report card, visit www.ymcacalgary.org/reportcards. Use your membership or swim access card barcode number to login.

NEW!

YMCA Calgary Basketball Leagues It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

YMCA Calgary now offers basketball leagues across the city for ages 7 - 16 and Junior Basketball for ages 5 - 6. Different from our traditional basketball programs, participants will have a weekly practice, then test their skills in a weekly game against other YMCA teams. Our leagues will encourage fun, skill development, and making new friends. Our goal is to ensure your child feels successful and develops the confidence and skills for life-long participation in sport and physical activity. League information can be found in in the Health and Fitness section under children and youth programs. Please Note: age group offerings vary from branch to branch. Sign up today!

YMCA Calgary’s Philosophy on Sport Everyone Plays - we ensure equal playing time for all players. Character Development - we help players of all ages learn valuable life skills such as discipline, leadership and teamwork. Healthy, FUN Competition - we make competition fun while role modeling and teaching sportsmanship and characteristics of a valuable team player. Sport for ALL - we welcome participants of all skill levels and backgrounds. Family Involvement - we encourage parents, siblings and friends to get involved too. We provide opportunities for family to help with weekly sign in, coaching, refereeing or cheering from the sidelines. Physical Literacy as a Focus - we include intentional physical movement in each practice and game to help kids develop physical literacy - the skills and confidence to participate in any sport or physical activity for life.
