Because Ys are devoted to the well-being of every person involved in Y programs, ensuring safety is an important part of what Ys do every day— whether teaching a child to swim, training a lifeguard, or maintaining aquatic facilities. This is why Y-USA provides a comprehensive plan to help Ys manage aquatic safety to meet the needs of all.

GROUP SWIM LESSONS The Y Swim Lesson Program is a nationally recognized program with a history of success. We are professional, safe, and incorporate character development (honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility) into every swim lesson.

While our immediate goal for each level is to teach various swimming skills, our long term goal is to develop a sense of self-worth, an attitude of service to community, and to inspire personal values in each child that participates in our program.

When you sign up for either the preschool or youth lessons they will be evaluated on the first day of class and placed in a YMCA swim level based on their swimming skills. Halfway through the lessons you will receive a mid session report telling you how your child is doing in their specific level. After the last lesson is complete, participants will receive a progress report which will determine if they progressed to the next level. The following descriptions are the different levels where your child could be placed based upon ability.

PARENT / CHILD LESSONS Baby Shrimp Lessons (6 months-18 months) The Shrimp Level is designed to get both the parent and the child comfortable in the water. The child will become comfortable moving in the water while the parent learns how to teach their child to be safe in and around the water. They will work on blowing bubbles and kicking. These fun classes teach through music and games while the parent guides the child through basic aquatic skills.

Toddler Perch Lessons (19 months – 36 months) Perch level builds on what a child learned in the previous Shrimp level. In this level the children will work on floating, changing body positions, and moving through the water on their front and back with an inflatable floatation device (IFD) by themselves. These fun classes also teach through music and games.

PRESCHOOL LESSONS, AGES 3-5 YEARS PIKE Pikes work towards becoming comfortable in the water while learning how to be safe around water.

EEL Eels will begin to work on basic stroke development, including the front, back and side strokes which will aid with overall endurance.

RAY Rays will work on front and back paddle, breast stroke and rhythmic breathing. Elementary backstroke will be introduced at this level.

YOUTH LESSONS AGES 6-12 YEARS OLD POLLIWOG In Polliwog, children will become acquainted with the pool and comfortable in the water. Skills will include submerging while blowing bubbles, front and back floats, flutter kicking on their front, back, and side, as well as paddling.

GUPPY In Guppy, children will continue to build endurance while working on basic stroke components for front crawl (with rhythmic breathing), back crawl, and sidestroke as well as receiving an introduction to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, diving, and reinforcement of basic safety practices.

MINNOW In Minnow, children work on refinement of strokes with proper breathing techniques and building endurance.

GROUP SWIM LESSONS BLOCK SCHEDULING YMCA swim lessons are offered in a block scheduling format to make it as easy as possible for families with multiple children to schedule lessons conveniently.

This allows children who differ in age and skill level to participate in swim lessons at the same or similar times, while being in the class most appropriate for them. Please call or visit your local Y for a schedule of classes.

Because the Y believes safety around water is something that every child deserves to know, we do have scholarships available. Please inquire at your local branch.

PRIVATE AND SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS– ALL AGES We offer private and semi private swimming lessons for both adults and children, which is perfect if you prefer individual or small group instructor attention. Maybe you started learning to swim as a child, but never quite mastered it? Maybe you’re afraid of the water? Maybe your child is a little nervous about learning to swim, so you’d like to ensure they have special attention in a one-on-one or small group environment? Whatever the reason, we’re here to help you learn to swim confidently, with a certified and supportive instructor, so you can enjoy the beautiful bodies of water in our communities – whether it’s a pool, lake, or ocean.

Our private lessons are 30-45 minute one on one lessons tailored to your individual needs and goals. Prices vary based on location.

Our semi private lessons are 30-45 minute two-on-one lessons tailored to the participants’ needs and goals. These lessons are usually purchased for siblings, friends, or spouses. Prices vary based on location.

ADAPTIVE SWIM LESSONS The YMCA of Greater New Orleans offers adaptive swim lessons to children with special needs who are unable to participate in traditional swim lessons because of learning disabilities, hyperactivity, physical limitations, or developmental delays. Offerings vary based on location. Please contact Association Aquatics Director Rachael Jonas at rachaelj@ymcaneworleans.org to discuss options and availability.

YMCA SWIM TEAM We are a competitive swim league with YMCA teams representing each of our branches  West St. Tammany YMCA Tiger Sharks  East Jefferson YMCA Stingrays  Belle Chasse YMCA Barracudas.

Our goal for this program is to provide an opportunity for the participants to set goals, work as a team, make friends, and improve their swimming skills. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to compete in 5 swim meets throughout our summer swim season. Participants will learn how to refine all competitive strokes, proper starts and turns, as well as build endurance.

Season Dates: May 31st - August 6th (10 weeks)* Cost: $175 members / $250 community participants *Additional Winter and Fall seasons available at West St. Tammany YMCA. Additional Fall season available at Belle Chasse YMCA. Please call or visit the branch for additional information.

Swim Team Requirements: The ages for swim team are 6-17. The 10 week season will start May 31st and run through August 6th. The Y will provide all practice equipment and coaching. The parents will need to provide a swimsuit, a swim cap, and goggles.

Beginner Team 25 meters (1 length) of each stroke: Front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, & a basic knowledge of butterfly.

Advanced Team 50 meters (2 lengths) of each stroke: Front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, & butterfly.

YMCA SWIM TEAM MEETS To make swim meets fair and teach children about competition the following rules will be enforced for all swimmers at every swim meet. Infractions of these rules will result in disqualification from the event where the rule was broken.

1. During breast stroke and butterfly events all swimmers will perform two handed touches on each wall they touch during the race.

2. Swimmers will not false start (start before the whistle blows) on any individual race. Swimmers will not false start (start before the previous swimmer touches the wall) on any relay race.

3. Swimmers will not touch the bottom of the pool during the race. This includes standing on or stopping for any amount of time to touch the bottom of the pool.

4. Swimmers will not hold on to or use the lane lines, side of the pool, or bottom of the pool to propel themselves forward.

TRAINED TO SAVE LIVES YMCA Lifeguard Course

During this YMCA Lifeguard Course, you will learn the following skills: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, how to utilize an AED and Emergency Oxygen in a time of need, how to prevent incidents, and how to recognize and respond to emergencies in the pool and around the deck. The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments. Participants MUST attend all course times and complete all online tutorials PRIOR to the first day of class. The pre-work will be sent out 7-10 days prior to the start of the course. The physical prerequisites for the course are:       

16 years old or above Treading water for 2 min with no hands Two pool lengths of each: front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, and elementary backstroke kick with no hands Feet first and head first surface dive and sprint swim at least 60 feet Pick up object off of bottom of the pool (6 ft) Climb out of pool without assistance of ladder or steps Listen to verbal directions given

INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE This course provides participants with the basic knowledge and skills to teach YMCA swim lessons to parent-child pairs, pre-schoolers, youth and adults. It includes both land and pool sessions, lesson planning, teaching methodology, class organization, class components and skills for the YMCA progressive program.

RECREATIONAL SWIM AT THE Y: RULES AND SAFETY INFORMATION Swim Test Policy: A swim test is required for all children 11 and under in order to use the slides or swim in a part of the pool that is more than chest deep. Non-swimmers can be in a splash park or zero depth area with an adult actively supervising them. If a child does not pass the swim test and wishes to use the slides, a parent or guardian (16 years or older) must be positioned at the bottom of the slide to catch the child.

The swim test consists of the following: Jump in feet first at the end of the lap pool, fully submerge head and face underwater, swim with a strong stroke (front crawl or breast stroke) 60 feet, stop and tread water for 15 seconds, swim back to the starting point, and get out of the pool. The entire test must be done without touching the bottom of the pool or wall.

Age Policy: For any child that is 6 years and younger a parent or guardian (16 years or older) must be within an arms reach in the water. For any child that is 7-11 years old a parent or guardian (16 years or older) must be on the pool deck actively supervising their child. Any child that is 12 years and older can be in the pool area by themselves.

Water Contamination: Water contamination may cause the aquatic areas to be cleared or closed without notice. Please understand that this is in accordance with health department guidelines and is for the safety of everyone.

Inflatables: Inflatables including water wings, rafts, and inner tubes are not permitted in the pool. Flotation devices must be coast guard approved.

Weather Policy: During thunderstorms and if lightning is seen patrons must evacuate the outdoor pool and seek shelter inside a substantial building. The pools will not reopen until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder or strike of 11 lightning.
