FEATURES 8101 Highway 23 Belle Chasse, LA 70037 Phone: 504-392-9622 Fax: 504-681-6169 After Hurricane Katrina, the YMCA of Greater New Orleans saw a need in Plaquemines Parish, a need for something far greater than a gym…there was a need for a place for community to return, a place for people to gather and to heal. There was a need for a home away from home—a place where all ages, races, and religions could come together to get healthy, grow, and play. With tremendous community support, including a $5M disaster grant from the former Conoco Phillips Alliance Refinery, the Y was able to open a facility in Belle Chasse. This state of the art fitness, family, wellness, community center opened in 2011 and has been expanding programs to meet community needs ever since.

Together our Plaquemines Parish YMCA’s serve more than 9,000 people annually.

I WANT TO GIVE BACK... In times of need, people need a place to go where they can feel supported, improve their well-being, and create meaningful experiences in their lives. And we know that this can happen when people not only become part of an organization, but join a cause that benefits them, as well as their neighbors. For member Treamell Hill, the Y has given him the strength and courage to continue his recovery after a massive stroke. As his wife, Gená, tells it: “Weightlifting and fitness have always been a passion of my husband’s. As long as I can remember, he has always worked out 5 days a week. Then, while at work, my husband suffered a massive stroke. At 40 years old, he was in the best physical shape of his life. It was determined that his stroke was caused by an undiagnosed blood disorder. It was a devastating, life altering change for him…. In the beginning, my husband wasn’t strong enough to use the stairs. Not only does he now use the stairs, he can also walk on the treadmill, use the Stairmaster, and use the AMT machines. The improvement in his overall strength is immeasurable. The staff at the Y has given my husband the courage to push a little harder each and every day. They have also helped him regain his confidence through constant support and encouragement. With the generous help of the Belle Chasse YMCA staff, my husband has been able to regain his strength, courage, and confidence.” At the Y, we exist to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. When people like Treamill and Gená join the Y, they become part of a cause that gives them the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, while also making their community healthier and happier. Last year, the Belle Chasse YMCA helped hundreds of children and adults take charge of their health, spend quality time together as a family, develop relationships with neighbors, learn new skills, improve their grades, and enjoy a laugh with staff and other members.

VOLUNTEER YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE .By teaching children the values of teamwork and sportsmanship in youth basketball, mentoring teenagers through college and career placement, or any of our other numerous volunteer opportunities. As a volunteer at the YMCA, you help us strengthen the foundations of our community by increasing accessibility, inspiring healthy living, and bringing about bigger and brighter achievements. Volunteers of the Y:  Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community  Coach our sports teams and teach many of our classes  Motivate and support youth in building character strengths, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals  Advocate for the Y’s efforts to influence policies and initiatives that positively impact societal issues of importance to the nation and your community  Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors

The Y is a nonprofit like no other. Become a part of the YMCA movement by getting involved. You can make a difference.

DONATE THEY NEED US…WE NEED YOU. It is this simple. When you donate generously, children that cannot afford YMCA programs will be given the opportunity to participate in Summer Day Camp, Leaders Club, Homework Club, our Youth and Teen Centers, Youth Sports, and Swim Lessons. When you give generously, thousands of families that need the YMCA will be given the opportunity to join any of our facilities and make progress toward their goal of living a healthier lifestyle. And, when you give generously, hundreds of adults struggling to navigate life because of a lack of reading skills will be able to participate in our YMCA Educational Services (YES!) program. The YMCA does not turn anyone away due to an inability to pay! The YMCA of Greater New Orleans is focused on three Mission priorities:  Youth and Teen Development  Support for Families  Adult Literacy
