Meet Vontresse & Leila
Meet Kobe
At 11 years old, Kobe has grown up participating in YMCA programs. At the age of 3, he played in his first team sport at the YMCA, youth basketball. He has attended YMCA summer and holiday day camps and is eagerly waiting to become a CIT. But Kobe is most excited about finally being able to be in Leader’s Club, a YMCA program for 11 – 17 year olds. Being in Leader’s Club gives him the chance to volunteer in the community and around the YMCA and to develop his leadership skills by having to make decisions with peers on their group activities.
Vontresse and her daughter, Leila, a student in the Wilson Charter YMCA Afterschool program, were living in a homeless shelter until October 2009. Vontresse enrolled Leila in the YMCA program because she needed a safe place for Leila to go after school until she could pick her up. Not only that, the program also provided Leila resources with homework assistance, socialization, and physical activity – things she couldn’t get living in the shelter. The YMCA staff also helped Vontresse secure a permanent home and furniture. Because of her experience with the YMCA and its staff, Vontresse is determined to keep Leila in YMCA programs and volunteers her time as much as she can.

Brandon
was 18 when he came to YES!. He was attending school in Texas postKatrina but, like many students from New Orleans, he wasn’t able to keep up with the other students. He was tested at 7th grade reading level. Brandon attended YES! long enough to get the basic skills he needed to transfer to a GED program. He plans on attending Delgado for training in automotive repair.
