Like a Shade Tree Letter from the President and Endowment Board Chair
A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit. -- Elton Trueblood (1900-1994) In 1972 a group of Y visionaries who wanted to insure that the positive influence of the Y would be a part of Greenville for generations to come took the strategic steps to establish the YMCA of Greenville Endowment. Their goal was to create a financial support mechanism for all YMCA branches in Greenville that would last well beyond their lifetime. To date more than 90 families and corporations have made gifts to the Y Endowment. Today, the endowment continues to be led by a volunteer board and has grown to be a solid foundation of support for all branches. When a gift is made to the endowment, the gift is placed into the corpus for perpetuity. The fund is invested conservatively and each year a percentage of the earnings from the funds are made available to the branches in the form of grants for new programs, collaborative outreach, or small capital improvements. Much like a tree, the roots of the Y Endowment stretch far into our community and the growing limbs stretch out to support new life and to provide renewed energy in the YMCA of Greenville. As you give consideration to your personal philanthropy, please give thought to a gift for the Y Endowment – the tree you plant today, will shade many for years to come. Sincerely, Melvin Younts Scot Baddley Endowment Board Chair President and CEO

Encourage a Generation When I reflect that one man, armed only with his own physical and moral resources, was able to cause this great land of Canaan to spring from the wasteland, I am convinced that in spite of everything, humanity is admirable. But when I compute the unfailing greatness of spirit and the tenacity of benevolence that it must have taken to achieve this result, I am taken with immense respect for that old and unlearned peasant who was able to complete a work worthy of God.
--Jean Giono, The Man Who Planted Trees A heartwarming story about the impact of one man, Elzeard Bouffier, who planted trees from 1900-1946, in the area where the Alps thrust down into Provence, France.

adventure guides & trailblazer programs
The Adventure Guide program
Create a Magical Connection
Since 1927, Ys throughout the country have been providing an activity-based program for fathers and sons/daughters age 5-8. Adventure Guides is as relevant today as it was in the 1920s. Events such as campouts at Camp Greenville, pinewood derby racing, bird house construction, baking cake for the annual cook-off, and the father/daughter dance provide opportunities for fathers to create a special and meaningful rapport with their braves/princesses. Come be a part of this unique, time-honored program.
The annual “Jamboree,” kicking off the program, will be at the Eastside Y on Tuesday, August 23, 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. Please contact Greg McKee at 963-3608 for further information.
The Y Trailblazer Program Our Adventure Guides program continues into adolescence. The Trailblazer Program is for dads and sons/daughters age 9-16. We have created a more challenging program, including : adventure weekends at Camp Greenville with rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Plus there are opportunities for leadership and service to others via a volunteer weekend and support for Adventure Guide events. To paraphrase Robert Frost, it’s a program that “makes all the difference” in creating an extraordinary bond between parent and child. The first meeting will be Thursday, August 25, at the Hollingsworth Outdoor Center. Contact Greg McKee 963-3608 for more information.
