YMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2016 Annual Report

“The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team. - John Wooden

Dear Friends, It’s been an exciting season for our YMCA, and to all of the supporters who helped to make it possible, we offer our sincere thanks. Much like a sports team, it takes many players working together to deliver wins for our cause of strengthening community. And in that game, we are blessed to line up beside thousands of committed teammates dedicated to helping people of all ages, incomes and backgrounds learn, grow and thrive. The victories of the last year belong to the donors, volunteers and staff who joined us on behalf of something larger than themselves. In 2016, it was our privilege to support 248,328 individuals who trusted us to help them achieve better health and wellness in spirit, mind and body. Nearly a third of those were young people, who found at the Y caring adults to help them cultivate the values and skills needed in the game of life. Although our game plan for a stronger community is sound, our opponents are formidable. Obesity and chronic disease continue to take a costly toll on our nation, state and community. And too many children face unprecedented challenges and a shortage of opportunities to reach their potential. We’ve made great strides, but with so much at stake, we must not relent or be content to watch from the sidelines. Fortunately for our community, we have never been reluctant to take on big challenges. For more than 140 years, we’ve tackled the pressing needs of our neighbors, inspired by a Christian mission rooted in a belief that all of God’s children deserve the chance to lead full and healthy lives. And we will continue to do so. We will continue to support those on a journey to better health. We will continue to nurture the potential of our children and teens. And we will continue to be a team to which everyone belongs. May this annual report and all that we accomplished together in 2016 be powerful reminders of what’s possible when a team comes together for the common good. With thanks,

Dan Dummermuth President & CEO

Jimmy Granbery Association Board Chair 2016-17

“Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.” – Mike Singletary

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Giving Every Child the Chance to Play When kids sign up to participate in sports at the Y—soccer, basketball, flag football, swim team— they’re signing up for more than a trophy or accolades. They’re learning the value of teamwork and hard work. They’re making friends and staying active. They’re developing as athletes and as young people—building character and confidence with the support of coaches who truly care about them. That’s the Y’s approach to youth development—not just in sports programs, but in everything we do. From summer camp to the swimming pool to the Y’s after-school care sites and teen centers, we provide safe, supportive spaces where more than 78,000 kids and teens of all income levels and backgrounds can learn critical life skills, explore their passions and feel like they’re a part of a team. Our team.

OUR BIGGEST WINS Nurturing the potential of more than 78,000 youth through programs and center membership Keeping 11,000 kids engaged throughout the summer with camps and enrichment programs Providing a safe space for those in need by offering nearly $384,000 in financial assistance to kids in after-school care Helping more than 7,000 kids learn life-saving skills in swim lessons

“Goals should be realistic, attainable, and shared among all members of the team.” – Mike Krzyzewski

HEALTHY LIVING Teaming Up for a Healthier Community In Middle Tennessee, chronic disease is a formidable opponent, closing in on every side and threatening the well-being of kids, individuals and families across our region. But we believe that with the right approach, the Y has the resources and reach to change the game. Our strategy is that age-old sports adage: the best defense is a good offense. In our chronic disease prevention programs, we’re promoting healthy lifestyle changes rather than treating a diagnosis. We’re prioritizing wellness among our own staff. And we’re giving our 203,000 members the expertise, personal attention and supportive environment they need to tackle chronic disease and press on in the pursuit of greater well-being.

OUR BIGGEST WINS Providing a supportive, safe environment where 203,000 members from all walks of life can improve their health Investing nearly $950,000 in healthy lifestyle promotion programs to help at-risk populations transform their overall health and well-being Offering community and encouragement through 1,800 group fitness classes taught by 643 instructors Providing close to 28,000 families a home away from home at the Y Giving parents peace of mind through on-site child care at our 15 family-friendly wellness centers Reducing our employee health claims costs by $240,000 from 2015 through fitness incentives and accountability

“No individual can win a game by himself.” – Pele

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Leveling the Playing Field At the Y, we believe every person—no matter their age, background, income or ability—brings value and unique talents to the team and deserves a chance to play. But some in our community face circumstances that leave them on the sidelines, unable to access what they need to truly thrive— social support, resources to live healthier or the most fundamental of needs: food to eat. With 15 welcoming facilities, a presence at 119 schools, and more than $5.7 million in financial assistance provided annually, the Y works to level the playing field so that people from all walks of life can access the Y and its life-changing programs. Through the Y, the disenfranchised find connection, children facing hunger are nourished and members become part of a team that’s making our community stronger and healthier.

OUR BIGGEST WINS Serving 118,857 meals to children at our highest-need after-school care sites Helping more than 50,000 neighbors in need (1 in 5 of our membership) belong to the Y through the Open Doors financial assistance program Providing more than $5.7 million in financial assistance, giving members and program participants access to the Y’s life-changing services Offering more than $8.8 million in total charitable assistance to our communities Fostering community and connection among 35,000 seniors who belong to the Y

2016 YMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE FINANCIAL SUMMARY In 2016, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee fully realized the benefits of the difficult decisions made during the last three years. The restructuring of our membership and program operations strengthened our financial footing, allowing us to again fund reserves and make the capital reinvestments necessary to support long-term sustainability for our Y.

Joseph W. Harwell Chief Financial Officer

Our Y’s Earnings Before Interest, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBIDA) declined by $2.2 million in 2016. The reduction in EBIDA was driven by a $1.7 million (-2.2%) decrease in revenues and a $0.5 million (0.8%) increase in operating expenses. The revenue shortfall was concentrated in Membership Fees, which were $1.4 million less than the prior year (closed center membership revenues for 2015 equated to $1.5 million), and Contributions, which declined by $0.5 million (closed center contribution income for 2015 equated to $53,000, and the majority of the remaining decrease is a result of capital campaign fundraising efforts for various facility projects coming to an end during this timeframe). Program Fees, Other Income, and Government Grants and Contracts each increased, but these increases were insufficient to offset the reductions in Membership Fees and Contributions. The higher spending was concentrated in Other Expenses, which increased by almost $1 million. Approximately one half of the increase was the result of a pledge to the YMCA Foundation to return a contribution the Foundation made to the Association in 2014. Bad debt expense totaled $290,000, the majority of which was a direct result of the Association’s move to the accrual accounting of Annual Giving Campaign contributions in 2016. Prior to 2016, only capital pledge activity was reported on an accrual basis. Personnel expenses increased modestly over 2015 due to a 2.5% merit increase granted to all eligible employees, the first such increase since 2011. Additionally, a 1% Employee Appreciation Award was shared with our fulltime employees to recognize their outstanding performance during 2016. Lower-than-budgeted claims to our self-insured medical benefit program resulted in a favorable year-end adjustment of $240,000. Spending also declined in Property and Equipment and Services and Supplies. Income from Continuing Operations, a financial measure that takes financing costs, depreciation, amortization, and unrealized gains and losses into account, improved from a $901,000 deficit in 2015 to a $155,000 surplus in 2016, due largely due to a $3 million favorable change in Unrealized Gains and Losses. In 2015, an asset impairment charge of $1.368 million was recorded to recognize the reduced value of a closed membership center that was being held for sale. We also accrued an unrealized loss of $872,000 on our interest rate swap; in 2016, we had an unrealized gain of $746,000 on the swap due to higher interest rates. A total of $1.25 million was transferred to Reserves during 2016, which was the first time any reserves had been set aside since 2008. We are excited about our YMCA’s prospects going forward. We will continue to invest in our valued staff via merit increases, continued training and development, and new staff additions that support our strategic objectives. We remain constantly focused on further strengthening the YMCA of Middle Tennessee to ensure that we will have the resources required to serve our communities for many years to come.

Order of the Red Triangle

Liz Wilson Allbritton When George Williams founded the YMCA in London in 1844, he did so as a volunteer, and it is in this deep-rooted tradition of volunteerism that we honor annually an individual who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. For 2016, it is our great pleasure to present our highest volunteer honor, the Order of the Red Triangle, to Liz Wilson Allbritton. A Kentucky native, Liz has made Middle Tennessee her home for more than 30 years, a large portion of which she’s been an active YMCA member and volunteer. After joining, then chairing, the advisory board at the Maryland Farms Y, Liz accepted the invitation to join our Association Board and quickly made her mark as a passionate advocate for our mission. In 2013, she co-chaired the Associationwide Annual Giving Campaign with Mary Lee Bartlett and remained at the helm as campaign chair in 2015 and 2016, helping to raise more than $13 million in support of the life-changing work of the Y. She also agreed to serve as Honorary Campaign Chair in 2017. Liz’s endurance as a triathlete serves her well, not only in her advocacy for our Y, but for countless other organizations. In her relentless pursuit of a stronger community, she has served as past president of the Nashville Triathlon Club and was named the 2006 Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she also served as a board member. And still, she found time and strength to train for and complete her first Ironman in 2008. An accomplished Certified Financial Planner™ Practitioner and Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor with more than 27 years of experience in financial planning and asset management, Liz is the Managing and Founding Partner of Monarch Advisory Group, a Franklin-based financial planning and wealth management firm. She holds a B.A. in Management and Human Relations and M.S. in Financial Planning. Liz and her husband Bob live in Franklin with their energetic miniature schnauzer Nova, who tolerates their love for travel and Auburn football. It is the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s privilege to honor Liz and celebrate the mark she has left, and will continue to leave on our community. She deserves a big War Eagle.

H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award

James A. Webb III In 2016, the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee presented its highest honor, the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, to James A. Webb III. Jimmy Webb’s legacy of service to our YMCA spans more than three decades. He joined our Association Board in 1986 and went on to become Board Chair, providing volunteer leadership to our Y during a period of unprecedented growth. Not only was he instrumental in helping our YMCA procure the property that’s now the Maryland Farms Y in 1998, he later served on our Vision 2020 Cabinet, providing support and guidance for capital expansions totaling more than $78 million that included the construction of our resident camp, new Ys in Bellevue and Smyrna and major expansions at the Downtown and Margaret Maddox YMCAs. Jimmy’s passion for our mission is evident in his continued involvement as a volunteer leader, and he embodies the spirit of the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, with his generosity and servant leadership extending far beyond our YMCA. After graduating from Montgomery Bell Academy and Vanderbilt University, the Nashville native began his career as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, where he served in Vietnam and later in New Zealand as part of Operation Deep Freeze, a scientific study of Antarctica. Prior to his honorable discharge in 1975, Jimmy received the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Unit Citation. In 1975, he joined the firm of McKee, Geny and Thornton as an insurance account executive. He left the firm in 1979 to co-found Freeman Webb with longtime friend Bill Freeman. The real estate investment firm today owns and/or manages more than 14,000 apartments and one million square feet of commercial space across the southeastern United States. In addition to his commitment to the Y’s cause, Jimmy is an active supporter of a number of other community and charitable organizations. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cheekwood and is a pastchairman of Montgomery Bell Academy and Sister Cities of Nashville. He is a founding member of the Nashville Zoo Board and is also a former board member of the Better Business Bureau of Nashville and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Chamber’s Urban Planning/ Land Use Committee. He’s also served as a volunteer leader with Buddies of Nashville, the March of Dimes, Men of Valor, Nashville City Bank, Tennessee Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program, the Tennessee State University Foundation, 100 Club of Nashville and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Jimmy and his wife Becky Smotherman Webb are the proud parents of three adult sons and two young grandchildren living in Nashville and Austin.

Richard’s love for the Y is evident in all he does, and because of his leadership, we are a better organization. He is very special to our Y family, and I can’t thank him enough for his friendship and dedication to our mission and cause.

I am beyond grateful that Wes Bender’s journey led him back to Nashville and for the good fortune the Maryland Farms YMCA enjoys by being his “home” center. I’ve been blessed to know Wes for years through mutual YMCA work with teens but knew his gifts extended far beyond that demographic. In true servant-leader fashion, Wes is volunteering on an ongoing basis and using his skills as a successful consultant to help our team navigate important discussions around diversity and inclusion. He is a gifted facilitator, but perhaps even more valuable than that is his innate ability to create meaningful connections with everyone he encounters. His true desire to do God’s work and give so selflessly to our YMCA is both humbling and inspiring.

Shauna is extremely passionate about the YMCA and the impact it has made on her family. She’s a mother of five who will tell anyone that she continues to have babies because the YMCA is here to support her! In 2016, Shauna chaired our My Y Week and led us to a growth of almost 1,000% in contributions from members. Her enthusiasm, creativity and passion give us the extra push and help lead our efforts to keep the YMCA available to all, especially families in our community. I couldn’t be more thankful for all she does for the North Rutherford Family YMCA. – Joey Hassell

Lance Taylor has been the principal of Guild Elementary in Gallatin for more than 12 years. During that time, he has been a champion for his school and a strong supporter of YMCA Fun Company. Mr. Taylor has partnered with us for his entire tenure and has made our staff feel like a part of the family at Guild. Even during the massive construction at his school this year, he took the time to make sure we had space to run the program so we could continue to serve families. He is excited about the expansion and eager for us to be in a larger space so we can offer the program to more families. He has said more than once that his school would not be the same without the YMCA, and we wouldn’t be the same without him! – Rico X

Ruth egers S

SUMNER COUNTY FAMILY YMCA

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR When Ruth Segers received a breast cancer diagnosis, she drove from Hendersonville to Green Hills to participate in the YMCA’s After Breast Cancer program. Thus began her passion for bringing ABC to the Sumner County Family YMCA. As she said, “We have to have this program here. It’s a lifeline.” For three years, Ruth was the guiding light of the Sumner Y’s ABC committee and fundraising efforts. Her dream became a reality in May 2016 when we reached our $10,000 goal to start the program. Ruth’s passions in life were her family, her church, and the ABC program. Both her family and the Y believe that ABC in Sumner County is one of Ruth’s legacies. Her dedication and determination continue to inspire our staff and volunteers to sustain the ABC program for future participants. Through each class, Ruth’s legacy lives on. – Kathy Raglin

YMCA COMMUNITY ACTION PROJECT

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Delanie Walker truly cares about the kids and wants to do his part to help them all reach their God-given potential. He believes every child deserves a chance. Delanie wants to make sure that our students are prepared on day one when the school doors open. That’s why he felt it was necessary to provide them all with brand new backpacks overflowing with school supplies to make sure they had what they needed to compete in the class room. Delanie is not only an all-star on the football field; he’s an all-star in the lives of the kids he has impacted here at Y-CAP and in the community. – Henry Smith

“In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?” - Jesse Owens
