2017 FINANCIAL SUMMARY 2017 marked our third consecutive year of greatly improved financial performance. Major financial trends included strong Membership and Program Revenue, continued favorable experience in medical benefit costs, and the ongoing reduction in restructuring expenses related to the downsizing implemented during 2013-2015 that dominated our financial results during that difficult period. Following the restructuring, we continue to strengthen our fiscal health by making the investments necessary for a sustainable future. In 2016 and 2017 we were able to restore funding of our reserves, ensure completion of major maintenance, and implement merit increases for our employees, our most valuable assets. We continue to reap the benefits of the difficult decisions that were necessary to ensure the long-term viability of our YMCA.

Statements of Changes in Net Assets In 2017, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s Change in Net Assets from Operations improved by $0.64 million compared to the prior year. For comparison, Net Assets from Operations declined by $1.2 million in 2017 and by $1.85 million in 2016. With the exception of the $0.23 million decrease in Contributions, all other Public Support and Revenue categories increased year over year. The decrease in Contributions was mainly due to a difference in the timing of pledge support from the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The combination of re-negotiated third party payer rates and improved member retention resulted in an increase in Membership Fees of $1.22 million. Program Fees increased by $0.9 million, Other Income increased by $0.3 million, and Government Grants and Contracts increased by $0.28 million when compared to 2016. Total expenses increased by $1.83 million. Personnel medical costs accounted for $0.40 million of this increase, although we continue to have very favorable experience in this expense category. The increase over last year is due to 2016 being an exceptionally good year for medical expenses; 2017 medical costs were significantly less than budget. The remainder of the increase in Personnel cost was due to the full-year impact of the merit increase granted in April 2016 and the partial year impact of the merit increase implemented in April 2017 (there was no merit increase in 2015). The Association was able to fund these increases at least in part as a result of the restructuring activities that took place during 2013-2015. The change in Net Assets resulting from Non-Operating Activities for 2017 was $0.92 million lower than 2016 (2017 reaped a $0.84 million positive change in net assets compared to $1.76 million in 2016). Contributions for the construction of capital assets accounted for the majority of this decrease as there were fewer capital project fundraising efforts in 2017 than in 2016. The Association continues to recognize unrealized gains on the declining liability associated with the interest rate swap agreement entered into in 2015 to protect our YMCA from fluctuating interest rates on our long-term Bonds Payable. This liability decreased $0.75 million in 2016 and an additional $0.67 million in 2017.

Summary Statement of Financial Position Our financial position continued to strengthen during 2017. Unrestricted cash increased by $1.09 million to $11.17 million, and restricted cash declined by $0.69 million due to the release of temporarily restricted funds to pay construction project expenses. Net receivables declined by $1.45 million due to the payment received on a promissory note related to the sale of property the Association previously owned in Mount Juliet. Property and Equipment, net of Accumulated Depreciation, declined by $2.78 million as depreciation expense exceeded net new investment in fixed assets. Cash reserves of $1.25 and $1.87 million were funded in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The 2016 reserve transfer was the first since 2008. Our long-term debt declined by $2.06 million during the year as principal was repaid on both the long-term Bonds Payable and Notes Payable. Other liabilities declined by $0.67 million due primarily to the decrease in the obligation related to our interest rate swap agreement previously mentioned. Total Accounts Payable and Accrued Expenses declined by $0.57 million due mainly to the payment of a 2016 pledge to the YMCA Foundation. Deferred Revenue and Capital Lease Obligations were comparable to 2016. 2018 and Beyond The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is well positioned for the future. We continue to strengthen our Y so that we can serve our community for years to come. We have developed an ambitious but achievable budget for 2018 that includes an additional $1.25 million transfer to cash reserves. The 2018 budget includes another well-deserved merit increase for our employees, as well as funding for new initiatives that will allow us to better serve our community. Looking beyond 2018, we have developed targeted reserve levels for Debt Service, Capital Reinvestment, and Contingencies, and prepared a five year operating plan to achieve those targets. The strong results we have experienced over the last three years have allowed us to make significant progress toward reaching the targeted reserve amounts.

LIFE LESSONS FROM GROWN-UPS WHO CARE At the YMCA, we believe the presence of a caring role model can change the trajectory of a kid’s life. Growing up, Raymond had a mentor like that in his Uncle Barry. A former Marine, Raymond’s uncle taught him valuable life skills and set an example of how to be a confident leader and responsible, compassionate adult. “I had a lot of bad influences in my life,” Raymond says, “and he was the person who kept me going in the right direction.” Those important lessons have largely informed Raymond’s life now as a college student, a military police officer in the Army Reserves, and a school site director for YMCA Fun Company. He and other staff invest in 60 to 90 children after school—the time of day when kids are most at risk for acting out unhealthy behaviors. From providing homework help to leading the kids in crafts and games—and even occasional dance parties!—Raymond and his colleagues fill the critical gap between school time and home with a sense of structure, fun, and support that allows kids to thrive. “Every day, if a child learns more about themselves…I think I’ve done my job,” Raymond says. With this quality time together every school day, it’s no wonder the students and staff share a unique, familial bond in which kids and adults enrich each other’s lives. And that dynamic is found all across YMCA school sites, youth prevention and intervention programs, teen centers, swim lessons and summer camps serving thousands of children and teens in Middle Tennessee.

A BROTHERHOOD FOR BETTER HEALTH The YMCA knows that when people buddy up to work out, they’re building community as well as muscle—and both are equally important to finding balance in spirit, mind and body. For Mick, Curtis, Vince and Bob—the men of the self-proclaimed “Old Man Workout Group”—friendship is what fuels their fitness routine. At least six mornings a week, the guys of the OMWG are a fun-loving, welcoming presence at the Robertson County Family YMCA. Several of the men have lost some serious weight, and all say they’re stronger and healthier since they joined forces three years ago. The group is enrolled in the Y’s Member Referral Program, which offers savings to members who join the Y together—and stick with it. “It’s just a way of life,” Curtis says. “I’m retired, so this is kind of like a jumpstart for my mornings.” Though they keep a strict schedule, their routine is anything but boring; the guys’ jovial chatter can be heard all over the building, from the wellness floor to the sauna to the group exercise studio, where they stray out of their comfort zone by taking classes (including dance!) throughout the week. “You can have fun, and enjoy yourself and meet new people,” Mick says. “All the classes are like that.” The group spends time outside the Y’s walls, too, sharing life over breakfast once a month. It’s a solid system of support countless others have also found through connections made at their local Y. “I think of him just as much as I would my brother,” Bob says of his buddy, Mick, and then adds, “All three of them.”

A CONSTANT THROUGH LIFE’S CHALLENGES The YMCA exists to support and strengthen individuals and families in every stage of life—especially when life gets hard. That’s what Stephana experienced when she first joined the Y as a single mom struggling to get back on her feet. Through the Y’s Open Doors financial assistance program, Stephana gained access to an “extended family” of encouraging staff and fitness instructors and a safe, caring environment in Y-Play for her then infant daughter. Being part of the Y community, Stephana says, brought physical and emotional renewal. “Early on, the Y helped me mentally beyond what I could ever think.” In the midst of new joys and hardships, the Y remained a constant in Stephana’s life. Shortly after Stephana and Justin married and began growing their family, Justin lost his job. Throughout a difficult pregnancy and the stress of making ends meet, the family needed a respite like the Y more than ever—and were able to maintain their membership thanks to Open Doors. “The Y was our rock and our place of consistency,” Justin says. “The Y was everything for us and our family.” Now, the family of five frequents the Y so often it feels like a second home. The grown-ups benefit from quality time spent exercising together, and the kids’ creativity and confidence are nurtured through youth soccer, dance classes and time in Y-Play. “These experiences that would ordinarily be outside our means are made real for our children,” Stephana says. “It’s so awesome.”

ORDER OF THE RED TRIANGLE

R. Walter Hale III Since its earliest days in London, England, volunteers have fueled the work of the YMCA, forming a powerful partnership with staff to champion a common goal of helping individuals grow in spirit, mind and body. It is fitting, then, that the YMCA of Middle Tennessee presents annually its top volunteer honor, the Order of the Red Triangle. For 2017, the Y proudly honors longtime dedicated volunteer, Walter Hale. The retired Executive Vice President of SunTrust Bank, Tennessee joined the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee Board in 1992 and has remained a permanent fixture since. Walter cleverly skirted ever having to roll off the board by being elected Secretary; thus he has served the Foundation for a quarter century without interruption. During that time, the Foundation’s assets have grown from less than $2 million to nearly $10 million. And Walter’s commitment isn’t waning. In 2017, he agreed to become Chair of the Foundation Board and continues to serve as the volunteer leader for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s planned giving efforts. Although he and his wife Faye now make their home in Naples, FL, he travels frequently to Nashville, and keeps up with his Y duties without fail. Walter received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1966 and his M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. After graduating from Wharton Business School, he started his career with Price Waterhouse & Company, working as a senior accountant until joining Third National Corporation. Between college and graduate school, from 1966 to 1968, Walter served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He received two Bronze Stars for valor and meritorious service and a Purple Heart serving in Vietnam. Walter also serves on the Board of Trustees of Montgomery Bell Academy and as an emeritus Trustee of the Webb School and an alumnus of Leadership Nashville. He has held a number of past leadership roles including the Board of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, where he was Vice Chairman of Finance. He served as a Director with the Salvation Army for many years and as a past president of the Nashville chapter of the Financial Executives Institute. He is also a past president of the Nashville City Club. Walter and Faye have three adult children and five grandchildren. He enjoys golf and is an active member of several senior golf groups, including the United States Seniors and the 200 Club, where he served as Captain. He is a member of Royal Poinciana Golf Club where he is a Director, and Belle Meade Country Club, where he served as a Director and Treasurer. He is also a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Naples. The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is proud to celebrate the volunteer legacy of Walter Hale, and we are grateful for his many years of tireless service on behalf of our mission.

H.G. HILL JR. PHILANTHROPIC AWARD

Marty and Betty Dickens

In 2017, the Foundation of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee presented its highest honor, the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, to Marty and Betty Dickens. Marty and Betty’s faith, love for one another and commitment to community has left an indelible mark not only on multiple nonprofits and other organizations, but also on countless individuals who have benefitted from their generosity. Marty joined the YMCA of Middle Tennessee board of directors in 2000 and has remained a dedicated volunteer leader for nearly 14 years. When he accepted the chairmanship in 2012, he joined hands with our staff to embark on a long-term financial sustainability effort that resulted in the most significant restructuring of operations in the organization’s history. Marty championed the fiscal health of our nonprofit, and his leadership and wise counsel were indeed gifts to our Y during a pivotal time in its history. Marty’s service to the YMCA is just one of the many ways he gives back to support our community. Throughout his 38-year career with AT&T, he served as a volunteer leader with numerous organizations and has continued to do so following his retirement as President of AT&T Tennessee in 2007. The Nashville skyline bears a permanent reminder of Marty’s legacy of service in the Music City Center. In 2003, he signed on to serve as founding chairman of the community-led coalition to build a new convention center. He also continues to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Belmont University and is past chair of a number of community boards including the Adventure Science Center, Baptist/ Saint Thomas Hospital Foundation Board, Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, Family and Children’s Service, Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau and PENCIL Foundation. He has also served on the boards of the Arts and Business Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, The Nashville Symphony and Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music.

For Betty, the women served by The Next Door are a reminder of the power of second chances. As a volunteer for the Nashville nonprofit dedicated to helping women in crisis, Betty has been instrumental in the growth of the organization’s efforts to reach women impacted by addiction, trauma and incarceration. A staunch advocate for The Next Door’s mission, Betty has opened many doors for the growing agency, bringing new supporters into its fold and helping to expand its reach and impact in the community, and together, Betty and Marty led the charge to build a playground for women and their families at The Next Door’s Freedom Recovery Community. Marty adds to this honor the Kiwanis Club Outstanding Nashvillian of the Year, Operation Andrew Group’s Business Man of the Year and Joe & Honey Rodgers Leadership Award and Boy Scouts’ Silver Beaver Award. He was inducted into the St. Thomas Hospital’s Seton Society in 2006. In 2012, he was honored by Belmont University with the naming of Dickens Hall, and in 2013 was named Nashvillian of the Year by Easter Seals Tennessee. Marty and Betty are the proud parents of two grown sons. John, his wife Sherri, and their children Ally Grace and Bo live in Atlanta, as do Jamey and his wife Sara. On behalf of the many organizations who feel so deeply the impact Marty and Betty have had in this community, we congratulate and thank them for their generosity, servant leadership and faithful support.

2017 YMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR

Lance Roller II

Gracie Scandrett

Lance’s volunteerism has greatly impacted our YMCA Black Achievers Saturday programming. The way he engages with our students shows how much he truly cares about them. He always provides important words of wisdom and readily shares his worldly insights. The students really enjoy being around him! – Joshua Love

I have to thank our wonderful former staff member, and Gracie’s dear friend, the late Mattye Porter, for introducing Gracie to the work of the Y. After that introduction many years ago, Gracie has continually, and without hesitation, given so generously of her time, talent and treasure to support the work of the Y. Since joining the board in 2016, she has served in multiple roles and has been a constant advocate, telling the Y story at every opportunity. Gracie is the epitome of a servant leader who cares deeply about her community. She is very special to our Y family, and I can’t thank her enough for her heartfelt support and dedication. – Steve Saxton

Frank Burkholder Downtown YMCA

Perhaps no one left a mark on our Downtown YMCA quite like Frank. His support of our renovation and expansion truly changed Nashville’s skyline and imprinted his legacy on the Y he loved. We will be forever grateful for Frank’s life and the positive impact he had on our organization, our Y family and the thousands of members he will never meet, but who will come to know what it means to be in community with one another at a YMCA in the heart of downtown Nashville. The staff and members of the Downtown Y and the entire Middle Tennessee association had no greater advocate than Frank Burkholder. We are proud that he called the Downtown Y his home, and we will never be the same without his smile and positive attitude. On December 13, 2017, Linda lost a beloved brother and the Downtown Y lost perhaps its most devoted member and a true friend. – Sharon Stiteler

Wayne Begarly

Jerry Painter

Clarksville Area YMCA

Van Stokes

Faye Redden

As an alumnus of our programs, Wayne knows firsthand the impact Youth in Government and Model United Nations have on the young people in Tennessee. Wayne gives countless hours of his time and talent to the Y Center for Civic Engagement every year. There is nothing he can’t or won’t do to make sure thousands of young people have an exceptional experience. Wayne is well known on Capitol Hill as the Y guy who is there at dawn and who singlehandedly sets up all the sound equipment for the high school and middle school YIG conferences. He does it year after year with a smile and a servant’s heart. He epitomizes the term servant leader and we couldn’t imagine a conference without him. – Susan Moriarty

From teaching swim lessons as a Y employee in the late 1970s and 1980s to being an incredible presentday volunteer, Jerry’s heartfelt dedication and commitment to the mission of the Y has been unwavering. In 2017, Jerry stepped into the board chair role at the Christ Church Y earlier than expected and did so without hesitation. His love for the Y is evident in all he does, and we are a better organization because of his leadership. On behalf of the Christ Church YMCA, thank you, Jerry! – Steve Saxton

Van wholeheartedly embraces and lives out the YMCA’s mission, both as a member and an ambassador to the Clarksville community. He is diligent in uplifting the Y, seeing the needs of the community, and finding ways to partner together to meet those needs. His passion and dedication are priceless to the Clarksville Area YMCA, our staff team and board. – Amanda Gill

Every week, Faye brings hope, health, encouragement and community to her class. For over 10 years, she has continued to pour her time and talent into helping others move and have fun. She approaches each class with a positive attitude, encourages participants to be themselves and welcomes all levels and ages to join in. Her warm spirit and passion for fitness and helping others is evident in all she does. – BJ Keener

Dr. Ogle B. Hall

Brian D. Taylor

Elizabeth C. Gerken

Kevin Xavier Martinez

As a member of our Spirit-Mind Committee, Ogle led the charge to create a Holy Land Gallery in the café of our Y. He provided the pictures and commentary for the gallery, which he took during a visit to Israel. Ogle published his pictures in a book called “Scripture Pictures of the Holy Land,” and gave several copies to the Y as a way of saying “thank you” to our donors. The Holy Land gallery has become a jewel at the Franklin Family Y and often leaves members and guests enlightened. – Drew Freeman

Brian’s commitment to the YMCA is unwavering. His willingness to help in any situation is invaluable to the community we serve. Brian helps us address the hard issues we face and helps us develop solutions that work for all involved. He deserves to be our 2017 Volunteer of the Year for his positivity and servant heart. – Laurel Wilson

It has been an honor to work alongside Elizabeth. As a board member and volunteer, she has always given a 100% effort and led our program and marketing committee and staff in ways that ultimately meant great things for our kids and families. Her insight and leadership elevated Widjiwagan’s program enhancements and reach throughout Nashville. We are so much better as an organization since Elizabeth shared her talents with us. – Jeff Merhige

Kevin is an exceptional volunteer who believes in the YMCA Latino Achievers vision and works with the YLA team to turn that vision to reality. He arrives with a smile on his face and a warm disposition, allowing students to feel safe and heard. He comes ready to engage with our kids, encouraging them to imagine a brighter future and emboldening them to reach for success. As a working college student, Kevin demonstrates that giving back is a rewarding experience that has the ability to inspire young lives. We see Kevin not only as a volunteer, but also as a cherished member of our community. – Adrianna Flax

Colton Wherry

Catherine Birdwell

Maresa E. Morrow

Vincent E. Malone

Colton embodies what it means to take an active role in strengthening community. His ‘get-it-done’ attitude, infectious energy and vision all come together to help us fulfill our mission and do what’s needed to ensure our neighbors can be part of our Y community. His leadership of our 2017 Tomato 5K and community coat drive are just two of many examples of his servant leadership. – Judi Winfield-Ferri

Catherine is a true servant leader. She gives and leads selflessly in every endeavor. Her heart is guided by a love for Christ and true passion for our YMCA. Whether it is in service to our board, chairing our Annual Giving Campaign, or co-chairing our Heroes in Heels event, she brings spirit, class and authenticity to every role. Catherine is a morning regular at ‘The Farm’ and takes an active role in creating community at our Y. She has also twice offered her place of employment, Holy Family Catholic Church, as a location for our all-staff meetings, directly contributing to feeding the souls of our staff. Her desire to serve and willingness to say ‘yes’ to new adventures will have a lasting effect on countless lives. I could not ask for a better advocate for our Y. – Jodi Schroer

Since joining our board, Maresa has made an immediate impact by filling positions such as Golf Committee Chair, where there were huge shoes to fill by previous board members who recently rolled off. She constantly steps out of her comfort zone to help our Y and never turns us down when we need her. She has an amazing upbeat and can-do attitude that is infectious. We are so thankful to call her part of our Y family. – Joey Hassell

Vince Malone was selected to receive the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Award for the Northwest YMCA for his dedication and commitment to this community and to our Y. If ever there was a time and opportunity to step up and lead, Vince has done it. There have been some critical moments where Vince has been the face and the voice for our board, and he’s always been a strong advocate for our center, participating in many of our special events such as the Tennessee Titans’ Courage House Dedication, the Titans’ Caravan Tours, Fall Festival, Splash Bash and many others. He is an avid fundraiser for our Y, garnering sponsorships and building relationships in the community. – Nicole Rowan

Pastor Matt Smallbone

Matt’s many years of serving as a youth sports coach have had a significant impact on the lives of so many children in our community. Parents of some of the kids Matt has coached perhaps say it best: ‘a trajectory of a life was fundamentally changed in a massively positive direction simply because he was in our lives;’ ‘Year after year the messages of hard work and never giving up were reinforced to every player he engaged;’ and ‘it was great to watch him interact with his players and teach them not only the skills required to play the game, but also skills that will carry them through life.’ It’s clear lessons learned from Coach Browning will last a lifetime. – Chad Smith

Jennifer has exemplified the spirit of true partnership. As the Director of Extended Learning Programs for Metro Nashville Public Schools, she has been extremely supportive of the YMCA Fun Company program. She routinely seeks to determine how the Y and MNPS can work together to maximize the benefits that students receive from after-school programming. Last year, MNPS was a recipient of a multi-year grant to provide support to under-performing schools, and Jennifer partnered with the YMCA to deliver this program at existing Fun Company sites. Jennifer has also worked tirelessly to leverage her resources to enhance our programming, whether that is through training or advocating on our behalf to schools. – Rico X

Dane is an incredibly giving person. He not only shares his treasures with our YMCA, but also donates his time in so many ways. He has spent countless hours volunteering at our YMCA with projects that took him away from his business and family and always does so with humility and a great sense of humor. Thank you, Dane, for believing in our YMCA and for taking such great care of us! – Kathy Raglin

Matt Smallbone is a true example of what being the ‘hands and feet’ of Jesus really means. He is a ‘dealer of hope’ in the eyes of our staff and kids at Y-CAP, and he embodies 1 Timothy 4:12 – ‘Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.’ – Jill Tramel
