FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CHILD CARE Parents Night Out

Enjoy a night out and take the worry out of finding a babysitter. Children ages 3 to 12 will participate in fun activities, games, and crafts. A fun snack and drink will be provided. Children must be potty-trained. Children will be separated into age appropriate groups. Space is limited so please register by the Wednesday prior to the event.

School Days Off Program

We know that working parents face a dilemma when school is cancelled due to single day holidays, short breaks and inclement weather. That is why we have filled in the gaps with the School Days Off program. We offer supervised games, swim time, open gym, and activities in our youth center.

Each child should bring a sack lunch, swim suit and towel daily. A $15 pre-registration fee is required by 5:00pm the day before; no registration is allowed same day.

Safe Sitter

Would you know what to do if a child was choking while you were babysitting? Would you know how to call 911 or how to handle a nosebleed? Safe Sitters will learn all these things and more!

Safe Sitter is a nationally recognized babysitting preparation program for boys and girls 11-13 years of age. Gift Certificates are available for purchase. Students need to bring their own lunch. Manual is included.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP Academic Enrichment IN IT TO WIN IT

IN IT TO WIN IT, through a partnership with Youth First, Inc., with grant funding from the Old National Bank Foundation, is a FREE leadership program open to 7th and 8th grade youth. Based on the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey, IN IT TO WIN IT is an eight week program which introduces youth to the leadership qualities they already possess and how to grow stronger in areas such as time management, prioritizing, goal setting and resisting peer pressure as well as building strong relationships with friends and family. (An Alumni Day is scheduled for Saturday, January 21 for all youth who have completed the IN IT TO WIN IT program.) Come and refresh and remind yourself of the 7 habits that are so crucial to success!

Boy Scout Troop Aquatics

The YMCA of Southwestern Indiana hosts programs for both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of all ages. Boys can experience a variety of Aquatics, Sports, and Fitness programs offered to fulfill badges, rank achievements, belt loops and pins, but they can also be customized to suit the interests of the group or just for fun. Girl Scout Journey Program

The YMCA has partnered with the Girl Scouts to offer programs that support the Girl Scout Journey Program. For a fee of $7 per scout, we’ll help you Discover, Connect and Take Action through various workshops and classes. Call 426-6210, ext 3316.

ARTS AND HUMANITIES Express Yourself Art Classes for Kids

Our art classes strive to meet both an educational and technical aspect of art while having fun with our students. For the first session, students will create many “stained glass” artworks and learn about the artist Henri Matisse who started creating stained glass art at the age of 77. The second session students will learn about the artist Victor Vasarely’s optical illusion drawing techniques along with several different drawing methods including speed drawing, blind contour drawing, and linear contour drawing. Finally, the third session will focus on screen printing along with color theories and pop art.

Children will have the opportunity to engage in activities which will benefit them emotionally, physically, and educationally. The camp is conducted and planned by staff trained to meet the needs of the children and to provide adult role models. The children will participate in field trips, crafts, gym time, and much more.

Summer Day Camp The Y’s Day Camp programs provide youth ages 3-13 with supervised activities that teach core values, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. Kids have fun while making new friends, building self confidence, appreciating team work, and growing in self-reliance. The Y offers a fun and happy place for kids to play, create arts and crafts, swim, participate in field trips, appreciate nature and discover and value our many cultures.

Through positive reinforcement, caring and competent staff, a safe environment and Christian values (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith) the Y’s Day Camp will provide a place for your child to become the best that he/she can be!

Activities: At the Y Summer Day Camp, your child will go on a field trip 4 days a week! Field Trips include: swimming, roller skating, putt-putt, the zoo, parks, bowling, bounce houses, and much more! In addition to the numerous field trips, camp programs include: arts & crafts, guest speakers, SPARK physical activities, songs, and story time.

Our original cabins have been retired. FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SWIM, SPORTS, AND PLAY Youth Swim Lessons Join us for a swim YMCA lessons use a learn to swim progression from water orientation to stroke development that meets the needs of swimmers at all levels. For your family’s convenience, the Y offers twice a week and once a week sessions. The classes that meet twice a week will run for 4 weeks and classes that meet once a week will run for 6 weeks.

AQUATICS REGISTRATION DATES 6 week sessions January 6 - February 15, with registration dates December 2 (FM) / December 9 (PM).

The Y difference: • Y swim lessons have a 1 to 5 ratio and a 1 to 4 ratio for preschool to allow for more time in the water.

• Convenient class days and times for parents to choose from.

• Participants learn water safety skills and stroke development in a fun and supportive environment.

Parent/Tot - (6-24 months of age) This class is designed to be a time that the parent spends with the child in the water. This is not a traditional swim lesson, and the children will not be taught to swim on their own. Both parents (and grandparents) are welcome to attend.

Perch (age 24-36 months of age) – This level helps children start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. Parents learn more about assisting their children. An adult is required to be in the water with each child.

Private/Semi-Private Swim Instruction Private swim instruction is available for those children who feel a one-on-one lesson with an instructor is preferred. FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Homeschool Swim for Fitness Parents looking for a class to supplement a physical education curriculum will find it here. Children 6-18 years of age will learn/improve all four strokes with emphasis on correct form, conditioning and stretching. Children will also have the option of swim team participation if interested.

Swimmers must be able to complete 1 length of the pool without stopping.

Stroke Technique Clinic

This month long clinic is an excellent introduction to the sport of competitive swimming and is a great lead up for any swimmer wishing to participate with the YMCA Riptides swim team.

It’s also a great way for current swim team members to brush up on their skills. Participants will be presented with the four competitive strokes, starts and turns, and introduced to various drills and workouts for each. This class meets 3 days per week.

Open water swimming requires skills not usually taught in a pool setting. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is approximately a 25-hour course which provides participants with the knowledge, skills and training necessary to become a lifeguard.

Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider Recertification The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program is to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This is the course that needs to be renewed every 2 years by lifeguards. It’s not about Pickles! Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball (waffle ball) and composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. It can be played in singles or doubles format (like tennis, but on a modified court with modified equipment). Recommended for ages 14 to 104.

No equipment rental fees…paddles and game balls for game play are included in session fee. Playing time is scheduled by signing up in advance.

FAMILY TIME Community Marriage Builders The YMCA is offering “REVIVE”, a workshop from Community Marriage Builders for distressed couples. This workshop is designed to give couples immediate skills to start healing their troubled marriage. Couples will be taught skills to aid them in resolving conflict and communicating effectively.

TRX Pilates Fusion

Pilates and TRX have many similarities so we have combined both of these core-targeted exercise systems into one class. It is a Pilates/Yoga inspired work out. TRX Pilates Fusion uses body weight resistance to combine strength and flexibility that is easy on the joints and a great challenge on your abdominal muscles. Youth Wellness Orientation All YMCA members, ages 12-13, must complete this orientation class to use the Dunigan wellness center. Youth, ages 10-13, must complete this orientation class to use the Personal Fitness Center at the Downtown Branch. This orientation will provide information such as proper use of equipment, safety and how exercise affects the body. The participant will also learn how to set up a fitness program and use the cardiovascular and weight training equipment with proper technique.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Indoor Triathlon Have you ever wanted to compete in a triathlon, but have not yet tried or are you a veteran triathlete looking for a challenge in the off season? If so, our Indoor Triathlon is just for you!

This event consists of a 15 minute swim, 15 minute bike and a 15 minute run/walk with 5-10 minute transitions between each event. Pre-registration is required and begins December 1.

YMCA SPLASH! SWIMMING & SAFETY SPLASH, a national Water Safety Training, will be presented at the Downtown & Dunigan branches during your Spring Break. Serving youth in our community who don’t have access to water safety training, SPLASH provides in and out of water education on how to keep children safe. Children ages 6-10 years are eligible.

Community CPR/AED The American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) CPR and AED is a combined CPR and AED program designed specifically for those who do not work in the healthcare field but are occupationally required to, or desire to, have CPR knowledge and skills. Emergency response teams in business and industry, school bus drivers, teachers and child care workers are just a few of the many professions that this training is suited for.
