Summer 2018 Program Guide

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT YOUTH SWIM LESSONS Welcome to Our Upgraded Swim Lesson Program We are excited to launch our upgraded swim lessons program. Swimming is not only a fun, healthy activity, but an important life skill for all children. Learning basic water safety skills is a great introduction to the world of swimming that often continues with swim lessons and competitive swim programs, and can even lead to a career. In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, children can increase their physical activity by swimming. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal orientation and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn how to work well with teammates and coaches and how to deal with winning and losing. Over the next five pages, we hope you will understand how best to select the appropriate level for you or your child(ren) and learn about our upgraded program.

What’s New: • Frequent communications with parents on their swimmer’s progress • Lessons focused on critical skills for each progressive stage • Lessons accommodating students of varying abilities • Seamless transitions for swimmers between stages • Lessons that promote fun and enjoyment

If you have questions about swim lessons, please contact Kelly Boylls, Aquatics Director, at 812-492-6708 or boylls@ymcaswin.org.

“I want to share my great excitement with all of you. My son and I just got back from a 7 day rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, and I was able to do most of the hikes, one of which was an hour long major stair-stepper hike up the side of the canyon. I was so full of emotion, gratefulness, and LIFE at the top of that hike that I broke into tears (of joy of course). It was simply soooo amazing! Didn’t matter that I was next to the last person to the top. I really made it! Praise to God! I attached a picture of Jordan and I near the top (of the hike, not necessarily the canyon). If you can zoom in to the left of my shoulder, you will see our 2 blue rafting boats and camp, which is the beginning point from which we hiked. Many, many thanks to LiveStrong, fellow Survivors & Thrivers, Sally, Dusty & Denise, and of course the YMCA for caring enough to invest in our health and recovery from Cancer, all the encouragement & prayers, and making this possible for me!” - Dena, LIVESTRONG Program Participant We thank St. Vincent as well as Oncology Hematology Associates, Inc. for supporting this wonderful program.

Hydroriders are user-friendly, in-water cycling bikes that are perfect for any skill level. These biking-in-the-water classes mix the cardio and lower-body conditioning of spin with the gentle-onthe-joints resistance of the water. The class uses stationary bikes in the pool to place riders in waist-to-chest water while pedaling away. The equipment allows you to adjust resistance generated by paddle wheels. With a limited number of bikes, we ask that members reserve a bike at the front desk 24 hours in advance of class. Call 423-9622 or stop by the Downtown front desk to make your reservation.
