Club History / Achievements

Barry Town on the Oval Who Would of Thought?

Today's visitors are no strangers to success as was their dominance in the 1990s and early 2000s of the Welsh domestic game, Barry racked up the air miles with European adventures both in the Uefa and European Cup.

Back in 1996 a 3-3 draw with former cup winners Aberdeen before going out on aggregate over two legs was just one of many a night for the Jenner park history books.

It was the 01/02 season that saw their greatest European moment beating Azerbaijani side Shamkir FC 3-0 on aggregate in the first qualifying round of the Champions which set up a glamor tie with the 1987 & 2004 European cup winners FC Porto.

The first leg at Porto's historic and now demolished Estadio Das Antas saw an emphatic 8-0 victory for the Portuguese host including a hattrick from future Ballon D’Or winner Deco in front of 55,000.

The return leg saw a much changed Porto side travel to South Wales still with future European championship & Premier League winner Richardo Carvalho in the heart of defence.

A crowd of 2,300 witnessed history at Jenner park that summer night as goals from former Cardiff City player Lee Phillips, current Walsall manager Mike Flynn & dragons hall of famer Gary Lloyd saw the linnets humble one of Europe's giants to write a new chapter in the clubs history.

Over twenty years on it still remains one of the best results by a Welsh domestic side in European competition and for those in attendance a real I was there moment….

Trip Down Memory Lane

As we go into today's fixture in this inaugural Welsh blood service League Cup competition we look back on one of the FAW’s now historic competitions. The FAW Premier Cup and although we never featured in it our own Craig Hughes was a winner with Newport county in 2008 the last time the competition was held.

Following it's conception in 1997 Wrexham had the most success in the competition lifting the trophy on five occasion’s and reaching 8 of the 11 finals, but today's visitor's took the trophy to Jenner park at the end of the 1998/99 season.

The victory meant Wrexham who'd won the inaugural competition the previous season were denied back to back successes, though for Barry it was a triple success having been crowned league of Wales champions (now JD Cymru premier) and league Wales cup (now Nathaniel MG cup).

In order to get the final the linnets had overcome both Swansea and Wrexham in the group stages before a quarter final grudge match with their old southern league counter parts Merthyr saw them win 1-0. A two legged semi final with Inter Cabel saw Barry emerge 5-2 winners on aggregate setting up the final at the Racecourse ground.

Going in at HT 0-0 Barry took the lead just before the hour mark through a Justin Perry goal, an equaliser from Wrexham legend Karl Connolly set up a grandstand finish before Lee barrow netted in the 84 minute to secure a Barry victory.

Man of The Match Board

Another first for the club this year we are but we delighted to have renewed our affiliation with Brendan of ‘Lyons Den’ who has kindly agreed to sponsor our new ‘Man of the Match’ board.

Todays Match Day Sponsor

For todays fixture we would like to thank Robert Price Builders Merchants who are ones of the clubs core sponsors for the 22/23 campaign.

Great business who offer first class service and products, don’t hesitate to visit one of their local yards.

Expectations for this Season – 100% Staying Up

The Illustrious100 Club

Not one who likes the limelight but following our last home game to Trefelin, it saw just the 6th player in the clubs history to score 100 goals for the club.

‘The Tank’ has been an absolute credit to the three different managers he’s played and scored under, the 100 goals have been achieved across six different divisions in just 158 appearances.

For those that have watched the clubs rise these past few years I think we can all say its not just his goals that makes him a special player his work rate for his teammates is an example for any youngster coming through.

Leon now joins the all time list of Chris Perry, Gavin Fry, Damian Roberts, Craig Wells and current all time leading scorer Cei Mason. #hesoneofourown

Double Centurion

A shout out to our long serving left back Zack Philpott who a few weeks ago made 200th appearance for his hometown club

Had it not been for injuries, the odd suspension in his younger days and a brief spell applying his trade on the rugby field as the Gavin Henson of Wattstown RFC he would be pushing the 300 mark by now.

However this season he’s re-gained his fitness and we have no doubt he has plenty of years left in what has been a great career with the buns to date.

Over 200 games across 8 different divisions and 6 Tier’s of Welsh football, during that time he’s scored some unbelievable goals and has singly handily kept the freeze spray profits at an all time high.

Blood, Sweat & Buns

As a club we are delighted to be working with the Welsh blood service as part of their blood sweat and cheers campaign.

Along with the FAW and all the clubs that make up the Cymru league's we are looking to raise awareness of the lifesaving work that the Welsh blood service do and to hopefully encourage more of the Welsh footballing fanbase to donate blood.

If your over the age of 17, in good health and would like more information or to book a donation appointment please follow the link below.

Long Live The

The word ‘Legend’ is often used too lightly with little to no evidence to quantify such a statement / title.

However for anyone associated to the club or those with a good understanding of our history I think we can safely say that Cei

‘The King’ Mason more than deserves such a mantle.

He’s represented the club since 2005 and has applied his trade from Tier 7 through to Tier 2, even he thought that this would be one achievement too many in what has been an illustrious career but a few weeks ago he broke the 150 milestone and hasn’t stopped there as he sets his sights on 200+

There have been some great players over the years with only a handful in the exclusive 100 club but Mason is now out in front and this may be a record that that remains unchallenged for many a decade to come.

His work rate on the field is unreal but the last 4 years its his work off the field, that many would not of seen, but for those that have I think we can confidently say had it not been, we would quite simply not be applying our trade at this level.

From everyone at the club we wanted to say a massive thank you to West Link Mechanical Services who are the new sponsor for our Reserves Team home kit.

This was worn for the first time in the clubs outing on the impressive Baglan field a few weeks ago.
