ART GALLERY/HIGH TECH DESIGN CENTER

DESIGN BRIEF:

For this project I would be developing an old Media Lab which is located near Stratford High Street. I would be developing it into a High Tech Art Gallery. I have chosen to redevelop this space due to its lack of attention of local people. The design of the building has been there since 2008 over the years the space has started to lack its purpose. The location of the space is even better due to being near Stratford High Street and Westfield/Queen Elizabeth Park. Stratford was originally a farming area the area has started its developed even more in 2012 due to the Olympics. My chosen theme for this project would be organic and flow and movement. Flow of movement would be a great theme to use due to the location of the building is next to the river flow. I would develop the space by bringing out the architectural aesthetic the space is lacking in. Organic Form will be used for both interior and exterior of the building.

SPECIFICATION:

o 2/3 floors-with an open roof

o Outdoor and indoor sitting area

o Each floor would have its specific space and theme

o The building in general will have a relation to the river side and the structure itself

o Disabled access

o Kids play area

o Washroom facilities(female ,male , disabled )

o Large open space on the second floor that can be used for a café shop with sitting area for studying or relaxing

LOCATION:

o The design of the space will link to more environmentally friendly themes( recycling products making them into sculptures , using technology and analyzing the river flow developing it into art)

o Open roof with sitting areas and greenery surrounding it

o Some floors will allow access to animals(dogs, cats etc…)

LOCATION

The space lacks in many aspects. The first problem is on my visit to the space I have come across to a lot of rubbish laying around the space and many cars parked anywhere they can find. Leaving no space for pedestrians to walk on the path. Not many people can be seen in that location in general due having no entertainment for children and for even elderly

On the other hand, the space has many good aspects too. Such as the space being right next to the River. The location is also near to rail services and primary schools for children. The space could be developed more by adding a space which will bring people together who would be willing to travel to the space and relax

My chosen location is an old Media Lab in Stratford High Street. I have chosen this location due to its surrounding space. The space in general is surrounded by residential flats, gyms and other entertainment facilities. Near the existing structure there is a bridge that leads to Olympic Park which is a great location for many tourist to come and visit the Art Gallery.

LOCATION ANALYSIS

The location is surrounded with many entertainment buildings such as fitness, clubs etc.. There is also residential flats and houses that are all spread around the location. (there is also new flats being built currently)

Stratford High Street was one of the famous spaces back in the days due to its massive markets and railway. But throughout the years the space has been forgotten by a lot of people. Which led the space to be used for only flats and houses buildings to be built.

Also, from my visit I have come across the roads are very busy and multiple cars pass by.( Right Infront of the building there is a bus stop)

LOCATION:

From my visit to the site, I have drawn many elevation views to give me and overview of the space and its size. The space is relatively small compared to the buildings surrounding it

I've came across on the right side of the building a basketball court that is being used by the local people which could be developed into a bigger space for children and local people in general

I have measured the distance of my chosen location to give me a rough idea of my building development

1858:

HISTORY OF STRATFORD

Since 1858, Stratford Broadway has been known as a mass productive market with many traders setting up stalls.

By the 19th Century Stratford was becoming increasingly industrialized with variety of new manufactures working in the area.

1896: Borough Theatre was built in 1896.It was the largest theatre project to be made. The venue had 3,500 seats without obstruction of the view and was also electricity lit.

In March 1933, the theatre became the ‘Rec Cinema’ with a new Interior design and a new auditorium of 1,889 seats.

1906:

Stratford has always had a massive connectivity with buses and trams.

Connections from East to Central London.

Espaces d'Abraxas:

Espaces d’Abraxas is the design of one of the most famous Spanish Architects Ricardo Boffil. His best known for his post-modern structures.

The space has many different buildings that have been combined throughout the years

The building is an enormous house complex which is located in Paris, France. The buildings is surrounded with many greenery from the inside and also the outside. The design of the building is to utilize classical motifs and new building technologies to achieve a luxury aesthetic

I have chosen this building as an inspiration for my final design due to its amazing detail in structure in general. The design has many small details that Ricardo Boffil has used on his previous buildings. The buildings from his previous years contrast to this a lot. The enormous outdoor space in his building is very unique to me due to not many Architects design their design in such way.

Espaces d’Abraxas: Analysis

I have drawn my favorite viewpoints of the building adding elevation views to it too. The space has a lot to take inspiration from

Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum

Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum is by the famous Brazilian Architect Oscar Niemeyer. The building is located in the city of Niteroi Rio De Jeneiro, Brazil. The building is one the famous city landmarks. The structure is 16 meters high with three floors.

The museum has a collection of 1,217 works from the art collector Joao Sattamini. The building is shaped as a modernist structure which can be viewed as an UFO.

Front view:

The Niteroi Contemporary Museum structure is 16 meters high. The building has diameter of 50 meters with 3 floor

5,500 tons of materials were bought.3,200,000 cubic meters of concrete which could raise a building of 10 floors.

Above the second floor is the exhibition hall which is surrounded by a glass circular balcony. Total area of a 1000 square meters. Through the glass you can admire the panoramic views of the Guanabara Bay

GUANABARA BAY:

Zentrum Paul Klee:

Zentrum Paul Klee is a museum dedicated to Paul Klee it is located in Bern Switzerland. The design is by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The structure of the building was inspired by the location and its hills. Renzo wanted to build a ‘place of remembrance’ in honor of the artist Paul Klee. The building has many rooms inside with different themes and sculptures.

I have chosen this space due to its overall appearance. The building looks identically as a wave. The building also has many movement and flow aspects from its bendable structure to the small details that can be seen up close.

I have drawn different views of the building due to its numerous detail and unique design

Side elevation: Renzo Piano

Plan view:

Side elevation :

The museum has a high tech and postmodernism design. Renzo Piano has a very open mind for space and designs. The interior of the building is an open space , light ,modern , natural but also old and new at the same time due to its exterior structure.

For these models I have combined different seashell and developed them into structural models

ORGANIC FORM ANALYSIS:

SEASHELL/SCALLOP
31

I have combined scallops and other different seashells together by drawing out the outlines of their shells. Which gave me a better knowledge and understanding of the different textures they have. Which then I can use on my models and develop them even more. The scallops have a bizarre design on the inside of their shell .Throughout the years the design changes depending on either the amount of salt water or even the location it is found

Plan view:

FIRST MODEL:

Side views:

The first model was mainly my starting point which would help me develop it to become even better. For this model I have added greenery, and people to give me a better perspective to how tall the building and each parts would be. I started the model by just twirling paper and cutting it out making small bits and pieces . The outcome of it was great which helped me develop my second model giving it more structure and a unique exterior view

SECOND MODEL:

The second model design is made up of three buildings which only two would connect and one of them would be the main building with art and other sculptures inside. The building will have a more modern design with an organic style. The building will be available for any disabilities due to there would be multiple activities. The building will have Café/restaurant with also a sitting area in the art gallery too

For my tensile research I have looked at different designs and how they work on the site but also to link to organic form structures. This design has been built in a university campus which has been used at night for students to go and read books or study under the tensile structure/pavilion

I have chosen to look at this design due to its link to organic form but also due to its structure. The model was made from bamboo sticks which were bended to produce an oval structure. It took 2 months for the tensile model to be finished and be open for use
