Volume 9, Issue 5 Ralph Turney Chief Visionary / Principal Marguerite Striler Publisher marguerite@yogaspamag.com
A New Season You may think because I publish a healthy lifestyle magazine that my self-care, eating and exercise habits are near perfection but, like a lot of folks, I’m a work in progress. For instance, most people lose weight in the summer and I tend to gain weight. I’m not sure if it’s what I’m eating and/or drinking but it happens every summer. I write it off as “stuff happens” and let it go because a new season is just around the corner. I love fall! Fall brings a certain crispness to the air that energizes me. Every fall I hit the pavement for long walks with my dog. It’s an add-on to my regular workout routine that allows me to shed the summer weight. I also get excited about sweaters, street fairs, weekend drives to wineries and the fresh smell of pumpkin everything. But, aside from all of that, there's a whole separate reason I love the season. It's the perfect time to shift into gear and start achieving your ultimate health goals before a new year roles in. This issue of Yoga & Spa celebrates women by focusing on ways to enhance their health and vitality. The articles speak to achieving inner balance with yoga, rebooting eating habits with healthy recipe choices and exploring alternative therapies to address health problems. We even offer a special Resource Guide in the back on local yoga studios and spas that we hope will encourage you to pamper yourself all the way to a fresh feeling of renewal. Please pick up extra copies of this issue to share with important women in your life. Mothers, sisters and wives will all benefit from the tips, products and services geared towards keeping them happy, healthy and vibrant. Enjoy!

Sit in a HOT BOX for 40 minutes? Why Would I Ever Want to Do That? by Traci Coughran
Well it's actually not just a hot box — it’s an Infrared Sauna.
Here are just a few of the health benefits: • Reduce Inflammation • Increase Circulation • Detoxify • Boost the Immune System • Reduce Stress and Fatigue • Improve Skin
Why an infrared sauna and not a conventional dry sauna? Conventional dry saunas have an indirect heating mechanism that heats the air (usually hot rocks). You step into the hot air and it warms you from the outside in. You sweat and get the health benefits of sweating. Infrared Saunas heat with infrared waves that penetrate your muscles and tissues approximately 1.5 inches deep. The infrared waves are at a frequency that cause the water in your cells to vibrate. Your body is warmed sort of from the inside out. This vibration reduces ion bonds and the eventual breakdown of the water molecules causes encapsulated gasses and other toxic material to be released. Inflammation is reduced, toxins are expelled and circulation increases. Yes, you also sweat and get the health benefits of sweating like with a conventional dry sauna, but you get so much more at a lower temperature.
Biotechnology Information and the Mayo Clinic, for starters. Supporting information is also easy to find in online magazine articles such as Women’s Health Magazine and Prevention Magazine. Be aware however, there is also plenty of hype and incorrect information available. Always be careful to verify the source and the motivation of the information you research.
Testimonies alone are not hard proof, but they are compelling. At our center, people have reported: “I feel like someone oiled my joints.” “After sitting at work I can stand up and just start walking again. I don’t have to lean on my desk and wait a few seconds first.” “My back doesn't ache anymore.” “I sleep well for 3 nights after each visit.” I am not a doctor or a certified health professional. I am just a person that has always had an interest in health and wellness and stumbled upon infrared saunas while trying to figure out how to not lose my flexibility as I get old. When I find something that works I like to share it with others. Infrared saunas are not the fix for everything that ails you, but they do great things for many people. Be sure to give one a try soon. Traci Coughran, owner of Feel Good Infrared Sauna Studio in Chesterfield has been involved
How long before I notice a difference?
with health and wellness throughout her career.
That’s an impossible question, but I’ll try to answer it anyway. Results can be different for everyone, of course, but it’s very common for our clients to report a noticable difference after just one sauna visit. Some of the changes they reported after a first visit include reduced pain from inflammatory conditions, clearer thinking, muscle relaxation and better sleep.
For more information visit FeelGoodInfrared.com, email Traci@ FeelGoodInfrared.com or call 636-898-6855.
Have these benefits been proven? Yes. Credible information can be found in studies by Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, the National Center for

Ritual identified the 9 most essential nutrients for women’s health backed by the latest data, then we sourced the most effective forms of those nutrients that actually work in the body, and finally we created a balanced product that provides only the amounts that are needed for optimal health. Our pill is not just good looking, it’s backed by much better science than the standard technicolor tablet. We use beadlet-in-oil technology that allows us to keep nutrients in their original forms and closer to what’s found in our food. Ritual practices true transparency. On our site, we invite our customers to trace each and every ingredient back to its origin. You can see what we use, where we got it, and why we chose to include it. Our ingredients are the best in the world, which means they can be pricey. But lucky for you, you have us on your side. Purchased individually, the nutrients in our Essential for Women would be 5x the cost. But, by eliminating the middle-man and selling direct to you, we’re able to make the highest quality ingredients accessible to everyone. www.ritual.com | Instagram: @ritual

Recognizing the Importance of Self-Care With the fast paced lifestyle today offers, and more responsibility placed on the women, it is even more important for women to “put the oxygen mask on first" and be that “healthy woman.” While recovery services might seem selfish, or even luxurious to some, the reality is recovery is as important as diet and exercise in the prevention of disease or injury. The modern healthy woman knows that a balance of exercise, nutrition, AND recovery services like those found at Radiance Float + Wellness is needed for optimal health. Studies show that nutrition is about 70-80% of the equation for weight loss. Radiance is proud to introduce a medically designed weight loss system that results in fat loss, while saving muscle mass. This system focuses on metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity and the necessary steps to restore normal metabolic function. The system is designed to quiet insulin output, support resolution of insulin resistance, support normalization of gut and digestive health, support the resolution of mitochondrial dysfunction, and allow for overall cellular repair. Another way to ensure adequate nutrition is to get nutrients IntraVenously. IV Nutrient Therapy boasts 100% absorption, where one can focus on certain goals and improve their nutritional status easily with our super-nutrients such as glutathione, vitamin C, NAD+, and others. Make sure to become an “IV League” Member and join the brightest and best! Reward yourself for all your hard work with the latest technology from Paris. The Cryoskin machine offers slimming and toning for permanent fat loss, cellulite removal, and the tightest non-invasive facial when diet and exercise are NOT enough. Radiance continues to encourage consistent and frequent use of our recovery services such as Float Therapy for the mental and physical reset of stress and gravity and Cryotherapy for the relief of pain, inflammation, stress and increased metabolism. Infrared Sauna rids the body of stored toxins from depths not cleansed before and Halotherapy calms inflammation in our respiratory system as well as our skin. There are also many add-on services and retail products at Radiance Float + Wellness that are carefully selected and placed together to improve and maintain the health of all. Be well, Dr. Zinia Thomas, M.D. Owner & Chief Healing Operator 1760 S. Brentwood Blvd. (Across from Whole Foods) www.RadianceSTL.com

Healthy Woman, Beautiful Woman by Carol Anderson
A healthy woman is a happy woman, and a healthy, happy woman is a beautiful woman. Time and how one lives their time influences the internal body and its functions and the external always reflects the internal. Your skin is your life and health “storyteller.” In a sense, your skin is sharing your life story.
There is a cast of characters at play in the story being told everyday by your face and body. This cast includes genetics, lifestyle, diet, exercise, sleep, and joy. If you have good genes and you have practiced a healthy lifestyle overall for all or most of your life, the number of your years will be a mystery to the viewer. If not, the number may not be as obscure. Can The Damage Be Corrected? The great thing about our body is that it really wants to heal itself and will, with a little help, correct the damage we have done over the years. For instance, if you are thinking the “sunspots” or hyperpigmentation in your cheeks or on the tops of your
shoulders and hands are from last years sun, rather, they are probably from childhood or maybe 10 years ago. This and other signs of stressors on the skin can be corrected, and your given beauty restored. The philosophy of Nouveau Medspa is one of whole body health and beauty. If, as our client, you have indulged over the years in sun, sugar, and less than healthy lifestyles that are being reflected in your skin, we will help you identify those practices, seek appropriate treatments that work for you and your budget, refer you if necessary, and coordinate a holistic plan of treatment to reverse the damage and set a new course for
a healthier, happier, more beautiful reflection of the woman you are.

Fall into Beauty During This Transitional Season

time for laser and applied energy treatments that resurface and ablate much of the damaged skin, resulting in new, fresher looking skin that is also tighter, smoother, and more evenly pigmented. The more dramatic of these treatments, and those that can accomplish the greatest effect over the shortest time, involve some degree of down time, making them a better fit for the fall when the intensity of active summer schedules subside. Even if the goal is to hold off a more aggressive cosmetic treatment until after the holidays, fall is an ideal time to reflect, evaluate, plan and save for winter rejuvenation. For those of us who are unable to allocate down time for a more rigorous cosmetic transformation, even in the fall, there are alternative pathways such as staged and stacked treatments that can produce similar results. On such an “installment program”, a greater number of less aggressive treatments are done over time and are often capable of providing analogous improvements to the more aggressive single treatment. And, because they are less aggressive, many of the installment-type treatment plans may actually involve no significant downtime. However, because multiple treatments are required over a longer period of time in this scenario, it is important to get started in the fall to make real progress before the calendar once again rolls over to summer, a time when many of us desire to be at our annual cosmetic zenith.
Fall is here. This is an ideal time to take advantage of the breathing room between the hustle bustle of summer (with more revealing clothes, warmer weather, family vacations, etc.), and the demands of the winter holidays, to explore cosmetic rejuvenation that is otherwise untimely. The arrival of autumn heralds one of the best opportunities to consider some of the more rewarding, and slightly more aggressive, procedures to address those issues that capture our attention when we stare at our “end-of-summer face” in the mirror. While it is possible any time of year, including the fall, to make small adjustments with fillers, Botox, etc, fall is a great time to consider those things that may have a bigger payoff, but which necessarily may require a bit more recovery time. For example, if facial texture, wrinkling, mismatched coloration, or other, less limited, issues are a cause for concern, and more than fillers or Botox can address, fall is the perfect

Experience the Healing Power of a Reiki and Gemstone Chakra Balancing Session by Jennifer Rogers
At the Aquarius Wellness Center for Healing Arts, our specialists work with clients to help them achieve deep relaxation and holistic healing. When clients receive a Gemstone Chakra Balancing, they experience the natural healing power of gemstones to realign the energies of the body for a renewed sense of harmony and well-being. A session scheduled with an Aquarius Health Practitioner will balance the energies in the body, awaken energies that are dormant, and restore the body’s vitality. The human body has seven Chakras, or energy centers, along the length of the spine. These Chakras are places of vital energy within the subtle body, and they can be experienced through both intuition and subtle sensory perception. When the Chakras are out of balance, blocked, or simply not working at their optimum potential, this can cause an imbalance in the corresponding energy type: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Occasional rebalancing can help patients reclaim their power and feel in harmony with their whole selves. Jennifer Rogers, a Holistic Health Practitioner at Aquarius Wellness, understands the delicate energies gemstones contain. She teaches clients how to select, cleanse, and charge gemstones for personal healing and growth. The natural and gentle benefits of gemstones are used for a number of healing purposes. They can act as a focal point for meditation, a defense against negative energies from our environment, a way to raise the body’s energy vibrations, and a source of inspiration and beauty. At Aquarius Wellness, clients have the opportunity to learn more about the body’s Chakras, explore therapeutic gemstones, and choose the stones that attract their attention, thus intuitively selecting the tools that will foster healing in the body and spirit. In a Reiki and Gemstone Balancing Session, gemstones are placed on the Chakras they correlate to and naturally resonate with. The energies of the gemstones help bring each Chakra back to its optimum state. During a session, Jennifer harnesses the energy of each Chakra stone to amplify the corresponding energy center in the body. Once blockages have been removed from the patient’s Chakras, Reiki healing energy is utilized to rejuvenate and balance the body on all levels. This therapeutic practice leaves the client with an overall sense of peace, balance, and renewed vitality. Jennifer Rogers received her Reiki certification in 2006, and certification in Gemstone Energy Therapy soon after. Jennifer has studied many other holistic healing modalities over her 20 year career as a Holistic Health Practitioner. She uses a combination of natural healing techniques, which are tailor fit to each client’s needs and goals. Call Aquarius Wellness today to schedule a Reiki and Gemstone Chakra Balancing Session and receive a 15 minute complimentary Intuitive Reading during the month of September. Experience the most effective way to free yourself from stress, anxiety and pain.
How Does Pain Work, Anyway? Imagine floating like a cloud, completely weightless, without the feeling of gravity. As time passes, you begin to forget where your skin ends. This very unique experience helps your mind without the distractions of sensory input so you can rest, heal, and grow.

Why is it that after sustaining an injury, sometimes the pain is immediate and sometimes the pain onset is latent, weeks or even years after the event? The short answer is that pain isn’t pain until the brain says it is! The transmission of pain signals is different than other sensory input to the brain, making the awareness of pain different than that of any other sensation. When the brain receives a stimulus of sight, sound, scent, touch or pressure, the brain immediately recognizes these pieces of information as what they are. However, pain is recognized by the brain on a threshold system. The brain won’t recognize the information as pain unless the impulse surpasses a certain level. This can happen with one large signal, resulting in an immediate experience of pain. Often, though, it takes an accumulation of signals over time to generate enough total pain impulses to the brain to exceed the level needed to be seen as pain. A person will not feel this pain until days, weeks, months, or even years later. In the case when the pain is realized immediately, the connection between injured tissue and pain is made easily and the treatment is very straightforward, but consider the following illustration of the complexities of latent onset pain. Susan has a side-impact car accident in which she strains her right neck muscles, but has no pain. Three months later she unknowingly starts slightly bending her neck to the right to relieve the strained right neck muscles. Five months after this, she starts subconsciously bending her back to the left to compensate for the right neck side-bend. Over the years, Susan changes her sitting posture at her work desk to a more hunched position, because it seems to alleviate the other curves in her neck and back. A decade later, she tells her massage therapist “it just came back out of the blue.”

It takes a thorough exploration of this patient’s history to unravel this accumulation of pain to its point of crossing the threshold 10 years later. Every piece of this chain must be addressed to get rid of the lower back pain, to keep it from recurring, and to prevent the onset of pain in any of the other links, such as rib pain or headache. It is essential that your pain-relief health professional can identify and treat all the links in the chain. Only then can the chains of pain be broken. Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and the most abundant protein in the body. Composed of the individual amino acids Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine, in nature it is found exclusively in animal tissue, especially bones and connective tissue. Collagen is responsible for giving skin its elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. In fact, the collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in the body, and 70% of the protein in the skin! The body’s natural collagen production declines with age and many modern lifestyle factors (like stress, poor diet, gut health imbalances, etc.) can also decrease the body’s ability to make it. While collagen is beneficial to the entire body, it is most noticeably beneficial to the skin. This is because as a person ages, the epidermis (outer layer of skin) thins and loses elasticity in a process known as elastosis. As this happens, a person tends to show more signs of aging and acquire more wrinkles. The good news is that these changes do not seem to be permanent or irreversible. A double-blind placebo study conducted last year found that women who took

YOGA&FITNESS YOU are the Most Important Factor in Finding Your Yoga Home by Johanna Avery
Within the past few years yoga in the U.S. has become more popular. There are more and more studies about how yoga is so beneficial for all types of people. The question is, Is all yoga right for everyone? Most people would answer that by saying that it is a personal preference. I would tend to agree. It has been said that there are generally 11 to 15 different types of yoga that most people know of, with experiences of one style being drastically different than another, and that is where personal preference comes into play. A person’s preference for one yoga over the other yoga may alter as you change into different phases of your life, but one thing is for certain: You have to go with what feels right to you and what your overall goal is. In general, there are two different ways of practicing outside of your home, in a gym or a yoga studio. There are wonderful things about gym yoga, and there are wonderful things about studio yoga, the key is to find what feels right to you.
Gym yoga class pros are: / Most cost-effective way to have a steady yoga practice
/ Studio classes may offer other aspects of yoga, like philosophy, history, workshops, etc. / More of a yoga community to help students dive deeper into their practice
/ It’s reliable / It has friendly instructors / It’s predictable, you know what to expect / At the same location or maybe multiple locations (i.e., Gold’s Gym)
Gym yoga class cons are: / Sweaty nature of gyms
/ Atmosphere of a studio: wooden floors, linen drapes, calming painted walls, dim lighting, soothing scents within the room / Teachers are required to go through teacher training and generally have more experience
/ Class etiquette, people coming and going as they please, cell phone out and interrupting class
Studio yoga class cons are:
/ Classes are more physically based yoga, rather than a blend of physical, mental & spiritual
/ Locations may be less convenient
/ Lack of community because the gym often has more foot traffic for different classes / Atmosphere of a gym: mirrors, carpeted or linoleum floors, fluorescent lights and other gym equipment / Teacher may not be certified or experienced
Studio yoga class pros are: / Classes are usually smaller and may be more personalized
/ Cost more for classes / More Intimidating to beginners Whether you choose to practice at a gym or at a studio, understanding the differences or factors should be considered when determining where you take yoga classes. With Yoga To You L.L.C. the yoga practice is brought to the comfort of your space, whether that be your home, office, your favorite park or in a parking lot, we cater (within limitations) to your yoga needs, for your comfort. For questions or to schedule one or more yoga sessions, please call Johanna (Jodie) at 636-368-8156 or email yogoatoyou00@gmail.com.
/ Class can be different varieties with multi-levels / Classes are more likely to be more focused yoga classes with different yoga disciplines

Yoga: A Union of Body, Mind and Spirit Perhaps the most obvious impact is made by acting on the connective tissue or fascia. When we get into these shapes we call yoga poses, we contract and expand our fascia - a complex system of organized and unorganized tissue that holds and runs through every system in the body. When we move the fascia, we’re acting on the continuum of tissue that holds the muscular, nervous and glandular systems, thereby inspiring and imbibing our bodies from the inside out. When we practice yoga, we’re bringing balance to our hormones, circadian rhythm and immune system. Woven into the asana (practice of the postures) is pranayama (breath practice). Pranayama’s health impact may seem less obvious but is exponentially empowering compared to exercise alone. Vegal tone is the effect on the heart when the parasympathetic nerve fibers are controlling it. It’s our “rest and digest” state. Healthy vegal tone is indicated by a slight increase in heart rate when you inhale and decrease when you exhale. Strong vegal tone means our bodies can relax more quickly after stress. Deep diaphramatic breathing with a long slow exhale is key to stimulating the vegus nerve.

If you’ve taken a Vinyasa yoga class, you’ve likely been exposed to Ujjayi Pranayama. Ujjayi (pronounced oo-ja-yi) breath is performed by creating a subtle tone around the throat while inhaling and exhaling through the nose. We breath this way while we move through and hold yoga poses and it’s benefits are miraculous. Beyond creating vegal tone, linking our movements to the breath creates the yoga: union of body, mind and spirit. The breath is the basis and measure of life itself. It is the vehicle for the life force. Imagine the fun of conducting the life force energetically through you while you move your body. That’s a yoga class!

Alignment Basics: Ustrasana (Camel Pose) To begin, from a kneeling position, set your knees and feet hip-width distance apart. Stack your shoulders over your hips and your hips over your knees. Press the tops of your feet into the mat. Place your hands at your low back with fingertips pointing down and palms pressing toward your back. Set your eye gaze forward. Take a deep breath in and lift your chest and eye gaze up toward the ceiling and pull your shoulders back and around your spine. As you exhale, drop your head back and walk your eye gaze across the ceiling and behind you. With hips pressing forward, reach one hand toward the heel and then the other. To go deeper into the pose, with each inhale, lift the chest higher to lengthen the spine and push the hips more forward. Walk your eye gaze from the ceiling, to the wall behind you and eventually to the floor, creating a deep back bend. The goal is to
lengthen and create space on the front-side of the body while creating an arch in the spine.
Modifications Tuck your toes under your feet to make your heels more accessible when reaching your hands toward your feet. Keep your eye gaze forward if dropping your head back is uncomfortable.
Some common misalignments and how to avoid them
is not. Avoid the lean back by lifting your chest up before looking back. The most common misalignment in Ustrasana takes places when practitioners focus more on reaching the heels rather than keeping the front of the body long while arching the back. Compression in the low back occurs instead of a deep arch in the spine. Arching and bending the back is healing to the spine and compression

Finding Peace and Strength through Trauma my pain and how yoga helped me through the process.
The Shift: When I decided to walk with
'It is not the easy moments of life that build character, it’s the tough ones. We gain our wisdom when our feet are to the fire.' Within the span of about 10 years, my sister was murdered, my first child was born premature, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my 15-year marriage ended in divorce. I’m sharing my story, so you understand that I’ve faced tremendous pain and I have learned some things along the way.

When these traumatic events were before me, I faced them head-on, working to tidy “the mess” as fast as possible. In trying to avoid these challenges with busyness, I failed to process my feelings. Years passed, and I kept waiting to be able to recall these events without heartbreak and heartache. I read book after book and spent several full weeks at a time working on myself and my life. On this journey, I discovered yoga and meditation. Through these practices, I learned to slow my mind and body and feel everything. The pain of the experiences still lived in my bones and I wondered if that would change. And then, I discovered one of the jewels of human existence. When you discover this truth, there is no going back, and the knowledge demands courage and no more hiding. It is not the easy moments of life that build character, it’s the tough ones. We gain our wisdom when our feet are to the fire. With every hardship I faced, I emerged with a greater appreciation for each moment of each day. I not only appreciate the easy days, I appreciate the challenging ones because I know they make me stronger and wiser. Here’s something else, the pain is mine and I don’t need to get rid of it. I need to face it each time it comes up. I need to acknowledge my experiences and pain, honor them, sit with them, love them and love all of me and then look around and soak in the beauty of life too. Walk with your pain and honor who you have become through all your experiences. Admire and honor your patina, the beautiful shine your soul has been given through the experiences of life. Walk in faith and in love, knowing that you are exactly who you are meant to be, right now, and you are exactly where you are meant to be, right now. And, should you find yourself on a yoga mat, know this… things are working out. Find the full story and follow Kellie’s blog at goyogaexpress.com/save-the-humans

Year A Tradition of Handcrafted Excellence Interview by Marguerite Striler
Cuba, MO is an unassuming little town about 1.5 hours southwest of St. Louis along Highway 44. The folks that live here are gracious, hospitable and as humble as pie. It’s a place where business is conducted by a handshake and your word means more than a contract. I visited Cuba, MO to interview Leroy and Ovia Marie McGinnis, founders of McGinnis Wood Products and makers of the finest wine and whiskey barrels in the world. Marie are working. I take a seat and can’t help but stare at Leroy as he hen pecks at an old black typewriter with little round keys. Ovia Marie explains – he’s preparing invoices. Leroy types invoices then stacks them at the corner of his desk to be faxed at the end of the day to customers around the world. It was a step back in time. From 1895-1920, Cuba was the largest producer, processor and distributor of apples in the state of Missouri. The apples were shipped in barrels. Although the apple industry is long gone, barrel-making remains one of Cuba’s most stable and productive industries with McGinnis Wood Products being a leading manufacturer. In 1968, Leroy McGinnis founded McGinnis Wood Products in Cuba, Missouri. The company started with a single building and eight employees manufacturing white oak staves (a single wooden plank attached side by side to make a barrel). Today, the company has grown to four buildings and 150 employees manufacturing the finest crafted wine and bourbon barrels in the world. I turn off Route 66 to McGinnis Wood Products. Jack McGinnis greets me and we walk down the hallway to an office where Leroy and Ovia
McGinnis Wood Products is a multi-million dollar, international company, and all of the deals are secured with only a handshake. McGinnis comments, “We have a good arrangement - nothing on paper, just an agreement. The only deal we have is that when I ship, I want my money. When we ship 2 containers to Spain on Friday, we’ll have the money in the bank by Tuesday. In all my years in business, that hasn’t failed." I jump into Ovia Marie’s truck and she takes me for a ride through acres of stacked staves, piles of logs and mounds of wood scraps waiting to be picked up by Kingsford and made into wooden fire bricks among other things. Inside the main barrel factory, workers place together between 30 and 32 oak staves to create a single barrel. The barrels are transported on a line through a steam tunnel that heats the barrels as high as 200 degrees Fahrenheit to make them more
pliable for steel rings to be added. At one station, an air pressure machine is used to test the barrel for leaks. McGinnis has one of the largest inventory of air-dried wood in the United States and possibly the largest inventory of air-dried white oak in the world. The demand for wine barrels made of Missouri white oak (Quercus alba) is everincreasing, and McGinnis is the top supplier of this commodity. "They’ve got the number one wine barrel in California." Leroy proudly states, “We have barrels all over the world and do a lot of business in Japan, Spain, Australia, Hungary, Scotland and France to name just a few.” McGinnis barrels are in cellars in every reach of the world. So, why Cuba, Missouri? Ovia Marie credits Missouri’s rolling hills, poor soil, rocky ground and the four seasons for producing the quality oak that makes their barrels so popular. “With the hills here, the trees grow more slowly, and there are less pores in them,” she said, describing the watertight wood. “It’s a tighter grain.” She notes that French and Hungarian oak are porous, which creates leakage. McGinnis Wood Products has grown to be among the largest cooperages in the country.

Back in Control of My Body
One woman’s personal story of unwanted bathroom breaks! by Michelle Somers
My kids are the greatest gifts of my life. But unfortunately, after two vaginal births, my ‘gifts’ left me unable to run long distances or sneeze without the fear of leaking a little. For several years, I just dealt with it and, honestly, tried to ignore it. But about a year ago I got really into a local circuit workout gym and found myself leaving class 3 to 4 times to empty my bladder for fear of peeing myself. I felt mortified every time the teachers would ask me if I was okay. I decided to do something about it and researched my options. That’s when I found Synergi MedSpa and their vaginal rejuvenation laser called the FemTouch. Was I embarrassed to call and actually admit out loud this was happening to me? YES! But I was MORE tired of running to the bathroom during class or—heaven forbid—getting a coughing spell! I’ve had two treatments so far and definitely feel a difference. My urges to run to the bathroom have gone down dramatically. In fact, it’s more of an old habit I have to mentally break because it’s no longer my body telling me I need to go. Just last week I made it through a whole class at the gym without running out. Like I mentioned earlier, I had been embarrassed to talk about my situation. I hadn’t even talked to my friends about it much. My consultation at Synergi was amazing, though, and they made me feel so comfortable and at ease. Even the procedure itself went smoothly. It felt ‘warm’ down there, but it wasn’t painful. After about 10 seconds my anxiety and tension went away when I realized I’d been worried for no reason! It’s been about 6 months since I started the FemTouch treatments and have one left. I am beyond happy I made this investment in myself. Nowadays, I not only talk about the issue with my friends, I highly recommend they go for a consultation at Synergi, too. I have experienced a change firsthand and want other women to feel this same way. No more hiding in the bathroom, stuffing large pads in my handbag, or wearing only black to the gym. We don’t have to worry, ladies. It’s time to take back our bathroom breaks and only go when we really need to! CBD Oil:
Essential Information to Know Before You Shop Not all CBD (cannabinoid derivative) products are the same or created equal, so you should do your research before purchasing CBD oil. There are certain categories and characteristics to be aware of when shopping for CBD oil, and making an educated purchase will ensure that you’re happy with the product.
Isolate vs Full-Spectrum CBD oil can be split into two categories: isolate and full-spectrum. CBD isolate is a pure CBD compound with no other active ingredients. Full-spectrum CBD, on the other hand, contains extra active cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds. It used to be believed that CBD isolate was a better option because it’s so pure. However, newer research suggests that full-spectrum is actually more powerful than CBD isolate. In one study on mice, CBD was more effective when combined with other cannabinoid compounds than when used in its pure form [1]. While it may seem like isolate should be stronger because it contains higher concentrations of CBD, other cannabinoid and plant compounds may interact in a way that strengthens the effects of CBD.
Hemp Source Hemp is a hyperaccumulator, which means it absorbs anything in the soil it grows in. Rich soil leads to high-quality CBD oil, but hemp that grows in poor-quality soil may be ineffective or even
dangerous. Soil contaminated by mercury, lead, or other heavy metals is especially harmful, and CBD made from hemp that grows in these conditions isn’t safe for human consumption. It’s typically better to buy CBD oil made from hemp grown in the United States. Farmers in the U.S. have required certifications, so you’ll know that the hemp is grown in safe conditions. Hemp from European countries is also usually trustworthy as the EU has strict agricultural standards.
Lab Reports The cannabis industry is unregulated in the United States, so sellers and manufacturers can get away with marketing lowquality products. The only way to ensure the quality of CBD oil is to see a lab report from a third-party that’s not associated with the seller or manufacturer in any way. Reputable CBD oil companies will provide third-party lab reports to prove that their oil is high in CBD, low in THC, and free of harmful compounds. If you make a CBD oil purchase online, the seller should have their lab reports available on their website. If you buy CBD oil in person from a dispensary, the seller should show you their lab reports on paper. The Natural Way in Fenton specializes in helping you stay healthy and fit. SPOTLIGHT
From Wall Street to Wellness I was looking for a change and a little adventure. I found what I was looking for and stayed for 20 something years. EK: What did you do for work while in New York?
Marguerite Striler is the CEO of Y&S Media and Publisher of Yoga & Spa Magazine in St. Louis, MO. She has a dynamic personality that lights up the room when she speaks about her vision for Yoga & Spa Magazine and its future. Striler was hosting a Bible study with twelve women on a hot summer morning in her home in Des Peres, MO, where she's lived since 2013. When I arrived at 9:00 am, they were just wrapping up. She greeted me at the front door, hair pulled back and in shorts and sandals, looking like an active L.A. lady coming home from a walk on the beach. As I waited, I stared at the large trees in her backyard and began to feel like I was in a tree house. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed interview. Ed Katcher: Where did you grow up? Marguerite Striler: I grew up in Spanish Lake, MO, surrounded by amazing neighbors and a few small vegetable farms that grew mostly corn and tomatoes (ironic, since we ate canned veggies for dinner). There were horses in the field out back of my house and a few lakes where my brothers would frog gig in the summer and the neighborhood kids would ice skate in the winter. I have fond memories of Ronnie and Sherry Miller’s house which is where my friends and I would go for candy and to see slideshows of their world travels. I’m guessing, they were the only folks in the neighborhood with a passport. It was fun. A fun place to grow up and just be a kid. EK: Where is Spanish Lake? MS: It’s in North County--north of St. Louis City. If you ride your bike about a mile from my childhood home, you’re at the Mississippi and Missouri River confluence. North County gets a bad rap, but it’s a beautiful area and in my opinion, a hidden gem. EK: Where did you go from there? MS: My parents moved from Spanish Lake to Chesterfield, MO, and I moved to New York City.
MS: In short, I managed projects for large investment banks in Manhattan. The projects were primarily driven by changing regulatory rules or driven by a need to improve productivity, decrease operational cost and increase the bottom line. EK: How did you go from investment banking to publishing? MS: It was an easy transition. The two roles are actually quite similar. There’s a lot of stress in managing projects and deadlines in an intense environment like Wall Street. While there, I learned to survive and to thrive on the intensity. Publishing is similar in that there are tight deadlines, which creates a high level of stress at the office, and there’s the constant juggling of priorities in order to meet them. EK: You seem energized by the work you’re doing at Y&S. MS: What energizes me is working with my clients and helping them get their message out to the public. What excites me is when they tell me they’ve gotten five new clients from a new ad campaign. I also love the creative side of publishing. The writing, the photography, the layout… it’s endless! I get the privilege of working with some of the best creatives in town! EK: What is your vision for Yoga & Spa Magazine? MS: Yoga & Spa Magazine is a high-quality publication with informative and inspirational articles that promote healthy lifestyles. We’re going to continue to build on that by creating a high gloss magazine cover that readers will want to display on their coffee table to reference at their leisure. We’re going to expand on the content to include fun recipes in the Food for Thought section and an advice column from a local veterinarian about pet health. My vision is to broaden readership by adding more quality and relevant editorial content. Yoga exercise and wellness information, both physical and mental, are cutting edge needs with a demographic hungry for new approaches to a sustainable highquality lifestyle. That’s all I’m going to share for now.
40 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com |SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018
EK: Why do you think the magazine content should be expanded? MS: The demographics of the United States have changed. The U.S. population is living longer and spending more time in retirement. They are well-read, college-educated individuals that want cutting-edge information on longterm sustainable health and wellness solutions. They don’t want to read about the latest pharma drug with side affects that (if allergic) could kill you. Really? How do you know you’re allergic until you take it? Bottom line, we’ve become an overmedicated society. It’s an issue and I want to help change that. EK: Are you apposed to prescription drugs? MS: I’m not against prescription drugs, but I am against pharmaceutical companies promoting drugs directly to consumers. I believe the decision about prescription medication should be left to the doctors, not consumers. Did you know that only two countries in the world permit direct (Pharmaceutical to Consumer) drug advertising? — the U.S. and New Zealand. Every other nation believes it’s unwise and irresponsible and I agree with them. EK: With your career achievements you obviously had other opportunities. Why did you pick Yoga & Spa for your next career step? MS: The need for a publication that editorially addresses new and significant health and wellness issues has never been stronger. It is almost like a revolution demanding new and better ways to address wellness. There has never been a better time to create a dynamic publication that spreads the word about alternative methods that enhance physical, emotional, and mental health. Marguerite is married to Rich Striler, owner of The Striler Group. She has three adult step children - Jamie, Jess and Joe, plus an old dog named Blue. She maintains an active lifestyle and is involved with The Ed & Norine Scholarship Fund, Angels Arms and The Revelop Institute. 60 SECONDS A WEEK NO PAIN ALL GAIN Interview with Jaime Zografos, the owner of OsteoStrong Ballwin. Why did you join OsteoStrong? I am a three-year breast cancer survivor and after my journey through cancer, I decided I wanted to live a life helping others improve the quality of their life. Many women are pushed into menopause with medications prescribed to them after their diagnosis, which can lead to extensive bone loss. Chemotherapy drugs have been known to reduce bone density as well. I want to be able to help any cancer patient gain their bone density back.
What is one of the first things I will notice when I come to OsteoStrong? One of the symptoms of declining musculoskeletal strength is a loss of balance. Because you engage your central nervous system and entire musculoskeletal system in a brief but very unique way at OsteoStrong, one of the benefits is an almost instant improvement in balance and agility. In fact, it's one of the first things that people notice.
Does OsteoStrong help people of all ages? Yes! Think of your bones as a bank where you deposit and withdrawal bone. Between ages 13-18, we bank the most
bone into our savings account. Around age 20, this evens out some. At 30 years old, we start withdrawing more than we bank. If the bone deposits don’t keep up with the withdrawals, then you may end up with osteoporosis when you get older. You can prevent this from happening by coming into OsteoStrong and getting more deposits than withdrawals for your bone health. While we increase the deposits into your bone account, we also strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding your bones!
the best bone density due to the force of impact they place on their bones. We emulate this force of impact with our patented equipment! Our members push multiples of their body weight to create an axial compression to start growing bone. When 4.2 multiples of their body weight is reached, the magic begins and bone growth starts. The studies have shown that 4.2 multiples of your body weight is the amount of force needed to trigger the adaptive response.
When and how would I see a decrease in my bone density?
I will buy you two sessions for you to experience OsteoStrong and see how we can improve your life. Send me an email, text or call. I am excited to see what we can do to help you; bring a friend too!
At age 30, virtually everyone starts to lose muscle strength, as well as bone density. In fact, if eating right and working out could hold off this natural course of aging, we would see professional athletes continuing their careers well beyond their 30s. We lose approximately 2% per year in bone density. Signs of a decrease in bone density are increased joint and back pain, increase in bone fractures and loss of height.
How does it work? OsteoStrong triggers an adaptive response in your body to grow bone. Research has found that gymnasts have

My What Muscle? What You Need to Know About Your Psoas (SO-as)
The psoas muscle (pronounced SO-as) may be the most important muscle in your body. Without this essential muscle group you wouldn’t even be able to get out of the bed in the morning! In fact, whether you run, bike, dance, practice yoga, or just hang out on your couch, your psoas muscles are involved. That’s because your psoas muscles are the primary connectors between your torso and your legs. They affect your posture and help to stabilize your spine. The psoas muscles are made of both slow and fast twitching muscles. Because they are major flexors, weak psoas muscles can cause many of the surrounding muscles to compensate and become overused. That is why a tight or overstretched psoas muscle could be the cause of many of your aches and pains, including low back and pelvic pain. Structurally, your psoas muscles are the deepest muscles in your core. They attach from your 12th thoracic vertebrae to your 5th lumbar vertebrae, through your pelvis and then finally attach to your femurs. In fact, they are the only muscles that connect your spine to your legs. Your psoas muscles allow you to bend your hips and legs towards your chest, for example when you are going up stairs. They also help to move your leg forward when you walk or run, flex your trunk forward when you bend over to pick up something from the floor and also stabilize your trunk and spine during movement and sitting.
Please check back next issue for ways to treat Psoas syndrome.
Call Kingen Chiropractic today and experience it for yourself... it works! The office is located at Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center, 2001 S. Hanley Rd., Ste. 220, Brentwood, MO 63144. She can be reached at 314-646-0013. Dr. Brenda Kingen has 25 years of experience. She utilizes Chiropractic adjustments, Active Release Technique, Acupuncture and Laser therapy in her practice.
Psoas contraction also occurs when you: • Sit for long periods of time • Engage in excessive running or walking • Sleep in the fetal position • Do a lot of sit-ups The types of movement which can strain your psoas muscles include standing/bending and twisting from your waist without moving your feet (think vacuuming or yard work), or any movement that causes your leg to externally rotate while extended, such as Ballet-style leg lifts, and even doing too many sit ups (your psoas muscles complete the last half of a sit up).

Growing Confidence Confidence can be described as a belief in one's self and one's ability to succeed. Striking a balance between too much and too little confidence can be challenging. Some would say that presenting too much confidence can come off as arrogant and standoffish. At the same time, having too little confidence can prevent you from taking risks and seizing opportunities—in school, at work, in your social life and beyond. Projecting just enough confidence helps you gain credibility, make a good lasting first impression, deal with pressure and meet personal and professional challenges head on. So how can you become more confident? A good starting point is to think more confidently. Confidence is introspective – it is how sure you are about things. Developing your ability to think confidently can promote more confident behavior. Conversely, by letting worries and anxieties take over, self doubt can take over and confidence can become curtailed.
Thinking Confidently
Fine Arts, Antiques & Collectibles
Appreciate who you are – Remind yourself regularly of your strengths, talents, skills, and attributes.
Learn to manage your fears – It’s natural to have some anxieties from time to time. You’re not alone, but don’t let your concerns overtake you. Know when they need to be managed and check how rational they are.
Practice Positive Self-Talk – Catch yourself when you are engaging in negative self-talk and replace it with encouraging positive self-talk.
Stop comparing yourself to others – Everyone is different. Each of us is fulfilled in different ways. You are your own unique self.
Develop a positive mindset – Focus on what you can take control of instead of worrying about what might never happen. Remind yourself of your past and current successes. Be proud of your abilities and capabilities. If you think you will fail, you may be less motivated and put forth less effort.
Retrain your inner voice – In situations where you believe you lack confidence, check what your inner voice is telling you, and if it’s saying something negative try to replace it with a positive voice. One of A Kind Items Available | Worldwide Marketplace New Showroom Now Open

Shamanism IS a Calling of the Heart! You have probably heard this word more in the recent few years than in your whole lifetime. Although, I feel like I have known the word Shaman my whole life, to define this word was a different story. There is some confusion in our society about what a Shaman is and what a Shaman does. There are several different kinds of Shamans who are doing their own work across the world, and there are many different ways of connecting to the Divine. What they all have in common is connection to the Divine. Not being fully attached to any specific definition, I was very drawn to travel to Peru. In 2013, I met a powerful Shaman woman who described her spiritual experience as a Peruvian Shaman of the Qero tradition. I knew that she was the person that I needed to travel to Peru with. So, in 2014 I went there with a group of 19, where I was one of only three US citizens. The Qero Shamans were exactly the tradition I had been seeking. They lived in the mountains for over 500 years and then were guided to move out to share the wisdom they had attained during this time. What they discovered was a concept that they couldn’t begin to understand. That people across the world were fighting based on religious beliefs. Because to them we are all one! Oneness is what they know and believe and needed to share, and Oneness is what our diverse group represented. I have trained in this tradition ever since that powerful and amazing experience. There are many different Shamanic traditions and many different people who called themselves Shamans. To me, the great honor I feel walking the path of a Shaman has changed me forever. The basic Qero Shamanic principles have always carried intense power. However, lately I am finding even more value embracing these principles and that there is a sense of Oneness as these values also fit a lot of other spiritual traditions that I am familiar with.
Non-judgement Non-attachment to outcome Non-suffering Walking in beauty These sound so simple, and I would really like to go into detail on each of these principles, as the depth in which love, peace, honor and respect for all life are woven together in this beautiful belief of Oneness that carries phenomenal power. Space in this article doesn’t allow me to fully explain. However, maybe if we can contemplate on the depth of these and a beautiful definition my friend Michelle Karen gave to us, we might all see a deeper meaning in life and see that embracing these principles could bring more peace and balance to our lives. Shaman practices are also very different, as each person utilizes this work in their own way while following the basic ideals that have been brought forth over many centuries. Some Shamans practice specific ways and stay very traditional. Others weave in different modalities and practices that work well together. Nonetheless, for each of us, it is a way of being and a way of life that is focused on the highest good of all!
“Shamans are keepers of ancient wisdom, a traveler between worlds. A Shaman says “Yes” to life. Shamanism is a path of magic, Oneness, enlightenment, the connection to Mother Earth and all of nature. A Shaman utilizes the tools of nature, simplicity, seeing the truth, the answers to synchronicity in life and nature. Shamanism is a way to come home, to get our own answers. It is the entrance to our truth, our Self.”
~ Michelle Karen

Beyond the Two Week Wait Tips for Mental Health Support During Infertility by Jen McCurdy, M.Ed., LPC
The last thing you want to worry about when trying to create a family is infertility. Let’s face it… romance quickly takes a back seat as a medical diagnosis takes over the most intimate aspect of your life. Infertility knows no boundaries; it affects women and men and can interfere with everything in your life. And, as many as 1 in 8 couples struggle getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. When coping with infertility, managing stress is perhaps the most important thing you can do. Stress does not cause infertility, but infertility definitely causes stress. Here are a few tips to support your mental health and create peace within your mind: Take Good Care of YOU: Infertility typically invites you into uncharted territory. From invasive medical testing, financial strains and emotional turmoil, you need to be sure to take good care of yourself. Be your own advocate. Keep a journal. Access your creative outlets. Be both active and mindful. Find the activity, place and mindset that helps you sparkle! Hope and Loss: The journey of infertility is such a unique process of ups and downs. Oftentimes, it

is difficult to manage the feelings between feeling hopeful and grieving loss. Remember that your partner is experiencing these emotions, too, even if it looks different from your hope and grief. Allow time for both of you to process your thoughts, and remember to ask for space when you need it most. Find your Tribe: We need one another, but it’s okay to be selective with your support system. Identify the people you can rely on most, and ask for support when needed. Also, remember to create your boundaries when it comes to social situations. You do not need to walk the infertility journey alone. Take good care of you by accessing the resources you feel will be most supportive of your journey. Jen McCurdy, M.Ed., LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in women’s mental health and wellness: infertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, attachment and transitions. Jen’s mission is to empower her clients to think big even when hope seems small. To learn more, visit JMWellness.net.
A Breast Friend is Forever Yoga Practice & Mental Health There are a litany of statistics published daily about the fact that we are becoming a medicated society in the area of mental health. Depression and anxiety meds are a huge pharmaceutical business. Health professionals and behavioral experts point out several nonmedical alternatives.
Here are a few examples:
Develop a scheduled routine: Structure and meaningful activities will fight depression.
Set Goals: When you are depressed, you might be inclined to avoid goal setting and meaningful activities. Goals will fight depression and anxiety.
Exercise: The amount of data based research on the relationship between mental wellbeing and exercise is overwhelming.
Eat Healthy: Eating healthy leads to better health. Good physical health has been positively linked to mental health.
Get enough sleep: Depressed people have trouble sleeping. Lack of
sleep increases depression. Napping makes sleep at night more difficult. Scheduling a reasonable sleep schedule can be helpful.
Do something new: Depressed and anxious people tend to negate
activities and trying something new, this makes your mental wellbeing worse. Be active and try something new.
Stay Social: Data based research shows that social interactions reduce anxiety and depression.
Reduction of Pain: Pain has been shown to have a causative negative relationship on mental health. Specifically, long term pain has been repetitively related to chronic depression and even suicide. Look for pain reducing activities.
There are other venues that mix exercise and mental health context together that have shown to be effective in anxiety and depression reduction. One highly successful activity is Yoga in several forms. Yoga combines physical activity, relaxation strategies and pain reduction as pathways to improved mental health. The author recognizes the profound help that mental health professionals offer including, but not limited to, medications. He simply wishes to offer additional alternative options to improving and dealing with the negative effects of depression and anxiety. Dr. Katcher is presently Vice President of ABC Parenting and an active educational consultant and motivational speaker. edkatcher@yahoo.com | 636-751-9695
“We are sorry to inform you that you have breast cancer” are the words NaToscha Meeks received the day before Thanksgiving 2016. “I was shocked,” stated Meeks. Those are words no woman wants to hear. As she attempted to suppress the devastating news she’d received, instead of celebrating Thanksgiving as many others were doing, she often found herself in a daze wondering if her diagnosis was a death sentence. Meeks is no stranger to breast cancer, her mother was diagnosed at the early age of twenty-one. She witnessed the matriarch of her family experience several recurrences of breast cancer before passing away eleven years later. “I was nine when I lost my best friend,” Meeks reminisces. “My mother was a great exemplar at giving cancer a run for its money! I knew I could defeat breast cancer from the morals instilled in my DNA. Breast Cancer is just a diagnosis, not a death sentence,” she boldly confessed. “I look at where I am today versus last year. It was stormy for me then but, I realized rain doesn’t last forever. I was determined to not give up, surrounded myself with positivity, great friends and family.” She adopted a positive attitude as well, telling herself “You’re a diamond, this will not break you,” Meeks shares with confidence. Written in honor of the taken, admired by survivors, and supporting the fighters. Today, everyone is at risk of breast cancer. We can change that! Take action! Early detection saves lives. Are You Determined and Motivated?
Radical Self-Acceptance and Intuitive Eating

Beth Koritz, M.Ed., LPC
As fall is upon us and we begin thinking of the upcoming holidays, our thoughts often turn (once again) to how we feel about our bodies, and losing weight. Do you find yourself contemplating which diet you will try this time? According to many large studies, 95% of diets fail, often resulting in more weight gain. Restriction can lead to binging, counting calories is a myth and living by our scale is a road to self-loathing. So what is the answer? How do we learn radical self-acceptance? Radical self-acceptance is the act of loving ourselves for who we are as a person and not basing our self-worth on the number on our scale or the size on our clothing. Take stock of all of your qualities, make a list. Look it over and then challenge yourself to double the size of it. You have so many more great qualities than you realize! Begin eating intuitively. Intuitive Eating is the practice of listening to your body. What is it telling you it needs for nutrition? Is it telling you that you are hungry? Then eat and listen for your body to tell you when it is full and then stop. It doesn’t matter what is left on your plate. Do you notice that you are eating

when you aren’t hungry? Ask yourself why. If you are bored, find something else to occupy you. If you are sad or angry, acknowledge your feelings so you can work through them in a more productive way than eating a bag of chips.

Meet Cocoa the Llama
Hello, my name is Cocoa and I am one of A Zoo For You’s llamas. I have an amazing life mission making people happy everywhere I go! I have a long slender neck, beautiful brown fur, and the most adorable face. Sometimes people confuse me with the alpaca but I am bigger than an alpaca, have larger ears than an alpaca and am typically raised to guard livestock and carry heavy loads long distances. I feel so lucky to be able to go to so many events in the greater St. Louis area, Columbia, and Illinois where I love to take selfies, photo bomb the other animals and even give kisses to the people who come to visit me! I will be all over Missouri and Illinois with A Zoo For You this fall at a wide variety of events! Cocoa advises the following if animals are wanted at a festival, event or birthday party. Be sure to ask if the animal provider is licensed by the USDA. Federal law requires petting zoo’s with certain animals (bunnies, sheep, goats, cows, llamas and alpacas and other exotic type animals) to be licensed. Find out if the animal provider company has petting zoo or pony ride insurance to limit liability in the event that something happens. Read online reviews to see what other people are saying about the company that you are about to hire. Ask for references and remember that quality and friendliness of animals is more important than the price. Post event be sure to leave online feedback to help other people hire the right company. A Zoo For You is fully licensed, insured and BBB accredited. Thank you very much, Cocoa (A Zoo For You) A Zoo For You is a proud sponsor of the #KeiraStrong foundation and donates to 25-30 events a year ranging from Autism Awareness and Down Syndrome events to fundraisers for PTO/PTA groups throughout the greater St. Louis Area. A Zoo For You is a class C USDA licensed company, fully insured and BBB accredited and has a wide range of packages to choose from starting at just $225/hr plus a small travel fee, depending on location. A Zoo For You provides entertainment that kids of all ages will never forget! Questions about their services? Contact A Zoo For You today by calling 314-325-9715 to schedule the mobile petting zoo or pony rides for your party or email us at reservations@azoo4you.com. Common Sense Tips for Running With Your Dog Whether you’re preparing to adopt a dog or already have one who matches you stride for stride, it’s mutually beneficial to know how to train properly with-and ultimately respect and protect-your favorite canine companion. Let’s start with puppies. If you’ve recently acquired a young dog or plan to do so, there are a few things to know when teaching your dog how to run with you. First, don’t even start running with your puppy until he or she is not a puppy. Veterinarian Tim Hackett, Chief of StaffSmall Animals at Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins, says seven months would be the earliest he would recommend a dog begin run training. Dogs must reach skeletal maturity first, which in giant breeds may not happen until up to 20 months, says Dr. Erick Egger, a professor of Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery at Colorado State. According to Elizabeth Simpson, who as owner of Boulder-based Tenderfoot Training sees the dogs of many athletes, “When a young pup’s muscles tire, they cannot support the skeletal system and now you are grinding bone against bone and doing damage.” Once your dog reaches skeletal maturity, best confirmed with a quick vet check-up, it’s time to start endurance training. Just like humans, dogs need to build up mileage progressively. “Treat your dog as you would a friend you are helping get started,” says Simpson. “Don’t ask too much and increase the time and difficulty only as he gets stronger.”
Hackett, who runs three paved miles every other day with his dog with one longer trail run per week, suggests starting with a mile a week while assessing recovery, watching how quickly heart rate and breathing return to normal and monitoring how your dog’s feet are holding up. Pad wear is arguably the most common injury in dogs that run regularly so consider running in grass instead of concrete and never run your dog on hot asphalt. Elite runners might start run training by completing a full, fast-paced run, then picking up Fido for a comfy cool down, suggests Simpson.
Training Tips As you continue to increase your dog’s mileage and pace, it’s important to remember a pet is always at your mercy regarding breaks, explains Hackett. “Your dog will run as long as you do, whether she’s exhausted or not, so don’t drag her on your marathon training run,” says Hirschfeld, who caps pooch-accompanied runs at 10 miles. Remember, too, that dogs don’t sweat like humans. They cool down through panting and disperse some heat through their feet. Neither of which are very efficient, Simpson points out. Knowing your dog’s resting heart rate and respiratory rate so you can assess recovery is helpful, says Hackett. For example, a rapid heart and respiratory rate that doesn’t slow with rest is one of the first signs of heat exhaustion. Others include collapsing, altered consciousness or unresponsiveness,
and high-pitched wheezing or gasping for breath. Taking frequent water breaks, choosing shady running routes and working out in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler are also important to your dog’s safety. Hirschfeld taught her dogs to drink from a portable hydration pack and water bottles. Others prefer a collapsible nylon dog bowl. A diet rich in meat protein and digestible calcium with lots of micronutrients, good bacteria and enzymes will help your dog maintain a healthy body and endure rigorous workouts, says Simpson. According to Hackett, “High-energy foods are fine, but you will still need to watch weight to be sure calories in equal calories out.” Jointeasing supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin may be beneficial for older dogs. Be careful not to feed your dog for an hour before and after you run. A dog’s stomach acts as a holding tank during digestion, explains Simpson, and eating too close to exercise time can make your dog vulnerable to dangerous gastric torsion or bloat. Beyond endurance training, safety habits and diet tips, what’s most valuable is your relationship with your dog. “Running really takes up a small portion of your day and the rest of your time with your dog will be spent living a normal life,” says Simpson. “Your dog needs to be a good match for you and your lifestyle.” Source: www.running.competitor.com

FASHION Looking Good & Feeling Great Starts from Within Shopping for undergarments is a dreaded task for most women. The majority of stores do not stock enough sizes, nor do they have enough staff to help you. Even with assistance a woman may not get into the correct size because they do not stock it. As a certified bra fitter I have a lot of experience with helping women achieve a proper fit. A properly fitting bra is important to a woman’s breast health, back health and self esteem. I offer women the opportunity to shop for undergarments through private fitting appointments, in home boutiques, office parties and women’s events. I make the experience simple, easy and fun! I am a mobile bra and bodywear store that travels to home or office doors. My fit kit contains 53 sizes of bras from 32a-44h, plus panty and shapewear items. Clients try on my samples and we place an order that will be delivered to their door in just
a few days. With so many sizes its easy to help women find their perfect size. I tell my clients bra fitting is an art not a science we use the tape measure as a guide but each women’s body is different so it is also about which bra feels the most comfortable. The look on a women’s face when she sees the difference a properly fitting bra can make her look and feel is priceless and makes me love what I do. In addition to helping women look and feel their best I also love helping women to start their very own mobile bra and bodywear business. The direct selling channel is a great avenue for female entrepreneurship. Essential bodywear was founded 15 years ago by women with a mission of uplifting and supporting women through great products and female entrepreneurship. Bra fittings are always free and every purchase supports a women in business. Every woman
deserves to look and feel her best so why not have your own bra stylist.

TRAVEL
Stay fit and have fun with FITrips, a vacation program exclusively from TotallyTrips
TotallyTrips is a full-service travel agency dedicated to providing the best possible vacation experience, including fun and exciting FITrips. Jennifer Evans and her team have been delivering premium, custom-tailored vacations for over a decade. Why does this make a difference to you? Evans and her staff have over 100 years of experience putting together premium, specially tailored experiences for their guests. Before recommending a trip for you, they travel to these destinations collecting firsthand knowledge, which enables them to make sure you get exactly what you want out of your vacation.
mixed with GETTING HEALTHY, TotallyTrips is now providing FITrips, one-ofa-kind fitness-focused vacations, throughout the year. Their vision for FITrips is to deliver unique and high-value group travel experiences that allow you to take your healthy lifestyle on vacation with you! What could be better than a thoroughly enjoyable vacation that is aligned with your fitnessconscious lifestyle?
Many people are under the impression that booking with a travel agent is more expensive, but that’s not true. The commission that agents receive comes from the resorts, not the consumer. The best part of the travel agency experience is that if there are any issues during your trip, you have a name, a number, and a real person to help resolve those issues! So you can sit back, relax, and they’ll take care of all the work… well, except for the packing.
Moving forward, FITrips will bring you a complete schedule of in-destination events, including larger scale group retreats and smaller, more intimate getaways – all hosted by our FITrips feature trainers and instructors. So, whether you’re in to yoga, spin/cycling, Zumba, Crossfit, Boot Camps, bodybuilding or just want a relaxing spa, wine and wellness weekend with some friends, FITrips will deliver the very best value and quality service you expect. As importantly, FITrips provide an opportunity to connect with others just like you – people who share the same unique interests in a fun, engaging and enjoyable beach vacation setting.
TotallyTrips provides unique experiences that cater to all of their clients, and they are partnering in a new endeavor for those who want an all-inclusive vacation experience
To ensure you get the best fitness vacation package, TotallyTrips is teaming up with just a few select resort suppliers, like Karisma Resorts, and combining forces with some
