The Yoshida Fire Festival, or “Yoshida no Himatsuri,”is held every year on 26 August to please the goddess of Mount Fuji and keep the volcano from erupting for another year. Yoshida no Himatsuri also serves as the closing ceremony for Mount Fuji’s climbing season. This lively festival is named one of Japan’s three most unique festivals and has been celebrated for over 500 years. The entire community comes out to watch the burning of large “taimatsu” torches and the parade of two “omikoshi,” or portable shrines. The Fire Festival is one of Fuji-Yoshida’s most prized cultural events, and this year’s festival promises to live up to its reputation.
Tour cost includes bus transportation, lunch buffet and boat ride. Spend the day in the Fuji Five Lakes area. Visit Fuji Yoshida Sengen Shrine, which stands in a dense forest, set off from the road by a long approach lined with stone lanterns and shaded by tall cedar trees. The shrine, which dates back to 1615, used to be the common starting point for climbing Mount Fuji and some dedicated climbers still begin their ascent with a prayer at the shrine before passing through the wooden torii gate. Then visit Oshino Village — a small town that encompasses eight ponds fed by Mount Fuji’s snow melt which filters down the mountain through porous layers of lava resulting in clear, spring water. Enjoy a buffet lunch at Sylvans Restaurant with freshly baked pizzas, meats, pastas, salads, desserts and more. Finish the day with a boat ride on Lake Kawaguchi to enjoy the local scenery.
Tour cost includes bus transportation and admission to the park and Buddha. Witness Ushiku Daibutsu — the tallest Buddhist statue in the world. The statue was built in 1993 to commemorate the birth of Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Japanese Buddhism. Explore the Narita Aeon Mall and grab a bite to eat before our visit to Boso-noMura — an open-air theme park that reproduces the Japanese scenery of the Edo Period. The park is lined with recreations of old samurai residences, farmhouses and other buildings. Take part in traditional crafts and cultural events or visit the museum which features exhibits from the primitive era to the present.
