DEMORCO (MARCO) WILKERSON JR. Plaque Shop Recreation Assistant When Marco’s dad suggested he move to Japan and work towards his graphic design degree at the University of Maryland University College (now known as the University of Maryland Global Campus or UMGC), Marco was hesitant. It was ultimately his mother who convinced him to make the move. It would be a great opportunity for Marco to reconnect with his father (who, at the time, worked at UMGC), and Tokyo is bursting with opportunities within the graphic design field. What started off as a temporary stay in Japan turned into a permanent life change. Tokyo is where he learned Japanese, met his wife and had his first son. It’s also where he started working at Yokota’s Arts & Crafts’ Plaque Shop. When he first moved to Yokota, Marco would often stop by the Arts & Crafts Center and draw for hours. The prior manager at Arts & Crafts, Fenton Fitzgerald, took notice of him and gave him a tour of the building — a tour that also included a trip to the Plaque

Shop. When the Plaque Shop supervisor, Don Flatt, engraved one of Marco’s drawings on a piece of wood, Marco was enthralled. His interest in engraving turned into an apprenticeship which quickly turned into a job. Engraving takes precision, practice and patience. The words and drawings are first created through a computer program before being tested and finally etched onto the material. The etchings must have a certain dimension, and one little mistake can mess up the entire etching. After having worked as a plaque shop assistant for over four years, Marco is a bit of an expert. He, on average, completes 20 to 25 engravings a day. Marco loves that his job includes two of his favorite things: art and customer service. He discovered his love of customer service in his hometown of Atlanta Georgia while working at Six Flags. It was a demanding job that involved 12 hour shifts and long lines of hungry, sometimes impatient customers, but he reveled in the challenge. He enjoys serving others and hopes to do it for the rest of his life through art.

HIKING MT. ISHIWARI TUE • 18 AUG • 12–8 P.M.

For those who were hoping to climb Mount Fuji this summer, Mount Ishiwari is a great plan B hike. Located just 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Mount Fuji, Mount Ishiwari offers stunning views of Japan’s most famous mountain as well as Lake Yamanako (one of Mount Fuji’s five lakes). Walk through lush vegetation, wooded forests and grassy plains all on one trail. Unlike Mount Fuji, nature thrives on this mountain as butterflies and blossoming flowers show off their vibrant colors and birds sing loudly among the hikers. A red torii gate greets visitors at the start of the hike. Climb cement stairs before reaching Ishiwari shrine. What the sacred shrine lacks in size, it makes up for in significance. The large boulder located just behind the shrine is split in two and is the reason for the mountain’s name (Ishiwari means “split boulder” in Japanese). An old wise tale claims that luck comes to those who walk through the narrow crack three times without getting stuck.

The trail gets steeper closer to the summit requiring hikers to grab onto the occasional exposed tree roots and thoughtfully placed, anchored ropes. Reach the summit for dramatic displays of Lake Yamanako and views of Mount Fuji so detailed you can often see parts of the trail etched into the volcano’s crust. Believe it or not, parts of Ishiwari’s descending trail offer even better views of Mount Fuji. Lake Yamanako signifies the end of the hike. At just 4,632 feet (1,412 meters) and 4.35 miles (7 kilometers), this hike is much easier than Mount Fuji’s trails. Still, the sometimes steep ascent will certainly get your heart rate going. Outdoor Recreation recommends participants bring hiking boots, a rain jacket, snacks and water. Need gear? Outdoor Rec offers hiking boots, backpacks, rain jackets and more for rent.

It’s a common story told by many overseas military spouses that landing a job can be a difficult task. But finding a job at Yokota Air Base is certainly feasible, and five of Yokota’s working spouses are here to share their lessons learned so you can land your next job.

MECHISA PINNOCK Mechisa has been a military spouse for almost seven years. Prior to marrying her husband, she gained experience within the education system in her home country of Jamaica through a variety of job positions including assistant librarian, assistant teacher and office automation assistant. Upon moving to Yokota Air Base in December of 2018, Mechisa substitute taught before acquiring her current position at the Yokota High School as an office automation assistant.

MERCED HOWARD Merced has been a military spouse for five years, and Yokota Air Base is her first base overseas. She has worked as a unit program coordinator at Yokota for two years now. Her position encompasses a vast array of responsibilities including support with government travel cards (GTCs), defense travel, the unit fitness program and more. Prior to moving to Yokota, Merced was a marketing coordinator.

FELICIA OLIVA Felicia has been a unit program coordinator within the Force Support Squadron for seven months. Her job requires her to wear many different hats including work as an information assurance officer (IAO) and unit software license manager (USLM). Before moving to Yokota Air Base, Felicia worked at Little Rock Air Force Base’s Child Development Center. She has been a military spouse for over six years.

JESSICA CHAPA Jessica works at Yokota’s Community Bank. Prior to her current job, she was a bar tender at the former Enlisted Club. Although relatively new to life as a dependent, she is prior military herself. While separating from the Air Force, she learned all about A&FRC’s services and still frequents the A&FRC for their employment and financial counseling services.

MARIEJHUN (MJ) GUEMO Mj is a registered nurse and aeromedical evacuation (AE) case manager. She has been a military spouse for close to 17 years and Yokota is her second base overseas. MJ completed a nursing travel assignment in Guam for three and a half months before accepting her current position at the 374th Medical Center. As an AE case manager, MJ coordinates the movement and care of base personnel whose medical needs cannot be met at Yokota Air Base.

STAY VIGILANT & GET INVOLVED

USE YOUR RESOURCES

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for job opportunities. MJ found a nursing travel assignment to Guam through Facebook, and she found out about her current job through a friend. USAJobs.gov is another great job-searching tool as it lists all of Yokota’s non-appropriated fund (NAF) and general schedule (GS) open positions. Mechisa stressed that if you can’t find a job right away, volunteer. It’s a great way to get involved within the community and build your network. It’s also something to add to your resume. Prior to finding her current job, Mechisa filled her time by volunteering at the Airman’s Attic and United Service Organizations (USO).

Upon moving to Yokota, Felicia fervently applied for GS jobs (at least 12 in total) yet still found herself unemployed. When she was denied an interview as a commissary grocery bagger because she “didn’t have the experience,” she figured it was time to seek help. After receiving counseling through A&FRC, Felicia quickly landed her first GS job. Jessica and Mechisa also refined their resumes and improved their interview skills through A&FRC’s employment counseling and workshops. Yokota offers a plethora of free and effective resources for those job searching, so why not use them?

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS It can sometimes be difficult to find a job within a specific career field, so consider applying for jobs outside of your work experience. MJ has always worked hands-on as an emergency room nurse but now spends much of her work hours coordinating patient care through emails and telephone consults. Still, she enjoys the change of pace, as it provides her the opportunity to see another side of nursing and expand upon her work skills. Felicia also went outside of her comfort zone by veering away from her childhood education career path and accepting her first secretarial job — a decision that led to a complete career change for her, as she hopes to stay within her newfound profession for years to come.

ONLY INCLUDE RELEVANT INFORMATION ON YOUR RESUME Your resume should be uniquely tailored to the job you’re applying for. If you’re applying to multiple jobs or positions, your resumes should not look the same! ASK FOR HELP Practice your interview with friends and family, and have someone edit your resume.

PROVE YOU’RE THE ONE FOR THE JOB While crafting your resume, use keywords (words that relate to the job requirements). Consider the job qualifications and how your skill set correlates. If you don’t have experience within the career field you’re applying for, consider how you have acquired the requested job skills through past work, volunteering or life experiences. Even though Jessica had never worked at a bank before, throughout the hiring process, Jessica emphasized her skills learned from past jobs. She’d never handled bank money before, but she had managed a cash register, and she had plenty of customer service experience. Merced also proved her competency as a unit program coordinator by emphasizing her experience in secretarial work and coordinating and managing events as a marketing coordinator.

APPLYING THROUGH USAJOBS? The GS and NAF resume style is different from a typical resume. New to writing a federal resume? A&FRC offers a Tips for Writing a Federal Resume class. RESEARCH THE BUSINESS Before your interview, research the business, facility, service, etc. Doing so may help you better prepare for the interview, and interviewers appreciate applicants who know their stuff.

FLIGHT SAFETY MEETING Due to COVID-19 precautions, the monthly safety meeting may be canceled for the month of August. Please call the Aero Club office for up-todate information.

FAA INFORMATIONAL LETTER TO PILOTS

LIFE & LEISURE

As a general rule, pursuant to Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), private pilots may neither act as pilot-in-command (PIC) of an aircraft for compensation or hire nor act as a PIC of an aircraft carrying persons or property for compensation or hire. Furthermore, to engage in air transportation, a pilot must hold a commercial or airline transport pilot license and must operate the flights in accordance with the requirements that apply to the specific operation conducted (i.e., Part 135). To meet the operational requirements, the pilot must be employed (as a direct employee or agent) by the certificate holder with operational control of the flight (i.e., a Part 135 certificate holder) or must hold a certificate issued under 14 C.F.R. Part 119. An additional caution to consider is flight sharing. Section 61.113(c) of Title 14 of the CFR allows private pilots to share certain expenses. Pilots may share operating expenses with passengers on a pro rata basis when those expenses involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures or rental fees. To properly conduct an expense sharing flight under 61.113(c), the pilot and passengers must have a common purpose and the pilot cannot hold out as offering services to the public. The “common-purpose test” anticipates that the pilot and expense-sharing passengers share a “bona fide common purpose” for their travel and the pilot has chosen the destination. Communications with passengers for a common-purpose flight are restricted to a defined and limited audience to avoid the “holding out” element of common carriage. For example, advertising in any form (word of mouth, website, reputation, etc.) raises the question of “holding-out.” Note that, while a pilot exercising private pilot privileges may share expenses with passengers within the constraints of § 61.113(c), the pilot cannot conduct any commercial operation under Part 119 or the less stringent operating rules of Part 91 (e.g., aerial work operations, crop dusting, banner towing, ferry or training flights or other commercial operations excluded from the certification requirements of Part 119). For more information on sharing flight expenses, common purpose and holding out see: • AC 61-142, Sharing Aircraft Operating Expenses in Accordance With 14 CFR 61.113(c) • AC 120-12A, Private Carriage vs. Common Carriage of Persons or Property • FlyteNow, Inc. vs. Federal Aviation Administration, 808 F.3d 882 (D.C. Cir. 2015) If you have any questions regarding dry-lease agreements or sharing expenses, please review the FARs and ACs. Additionally, you may contact your local Flight Standards District Office for assistance or seek the advice of a qualified aviation attorney.
