SELENA HERNANDEZ
Work-Life Specialist
Military & Family Readiness Center
From the very beginning of our interview, it’s clear that Mrs. Selena Hernandez is dedicated to serving members and their families here at Yokota. “I’m passionate about supporting, helping our community, advocating for resources and our needs,” she shares. As the Work-Life Specialist at M&FRC, Mrs. Hernandez has a hand in the Key Spouse program, Exceptional Family Member Program and the Transition Assistance Program.
“Prior to arriving at Yokota, I was actually working in the behavioral health field as a transition facilitator. In my role, I was helping teenagers and young adults transition to adulthood.” Mrs. Hernandez highlights the similarities between her previous work and her efforts now in TAP,
noting, “I taught those independent livings skills that range from getting employment to emotional regulation to coping skills; how to ask for things or how to advocate for yourself. […] I already had experience with a lot of the community, local resources and helping those young adults transition to adulthood. […] Now, I’m helping service members transition to civilian life.”
When Mrs. Hernandez isn’t too busy advocating for the families on Yokota, she spends her time hiking, painting and exploring the area. “I love to travel. My husband and I are very spontaneous travelers. Being in Japan, we like to go everywhere, try everything and have the best food.” Whether she’s assisting service members as they begin their civilian journey or adventuring to the best ramen spots in Japan, the 374th FSS is excited to have Mrs. Hernandez as a representative of our community!

in Japan
In the spring months, Sakura season blankets Japan in pink and white petals that come and go in the blink of an eye. Rivers, streets and shrines are lined with people who are trying to get a look at the fleeting beauty of peak bloom. If you’re looking for your next adventure, check out some of the best locations to see the cherry blossoms before they fall.
1. UENO PARK
Mid Mar–Mid Apr
The paths of Ueno Park are lined with over 1,000 cherry trees, the first of which were planted by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1868). Located only four stops from Tokyo station, Ueno Park is conveniently placed and a wonderful way for the whole family to see the blossoms. After the festival, the family can stop at the Ueno Zoo or one of the many museums surrounding the area to round out a day of fun.
2. OKAZAKI CANAL
Mid Mar–Early Apr
The historical city of Kyoto is the backdrop to the Okazaki Canal, where hundreds of sakura trees border the waterway and create stunning scenery for a 25-minute canal cruise. Home to the Nanzenji Temple and the torii gate of Heian Shrine, a trip to Okazaki Canal is one that promises to be full of beautiful blossoms and traditional architecture.
3. HIROSAKI CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
23 Apr–5 May
Though the sakura trees are stunning to see in a daytime stroll, Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival offers an illumination that you won’t want to miss. With over 2,500 trees surrounding Hirosaki Castle and the park, this unique view of the blossoms is a detailed look at the variety of cherry trees that the season has to offer.
4. SAKURA FESTIVAL
8 Apr
Our very own spring festival, Sakura Fest, is the perfect way to admire the beauty of the blossoms on Yokota Air Base. Stroll the east side and view the blossoming sakura trees that line McGuire Ave. Enjoy hanami (flower viewing) with the family without having to travel far and be sure to see the glory of the Sakura season before it ends.
