Month of the Military Child is all about celebrating military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and for overcoming adversity. From changing schools often and moving away from friends and family to being separated from parents for long periods of time– military children face a unique set of challenges. We reached out to child care facilities from all over Yokota Air Base and they selected outstanding children who go above and beyond in their military community. We asked them to tell us what being a military child means to them. Here’s what they had to say:

Age: 10
Youth & Teen Center
“Kids face lots of challenges, being in the military doesn’t make things any better. Your parents may deploy and it’s hard not always having them there and worrying that they may not come back. Having faith helps me a lot. My Dad is about to deploy for one year, which will be very difficult, but I know he’ll be back safely. Love you Dad!”
Mikai Egbon
Age: 11

“It’s challenging moving from place to place, but I love being able to experience different cultures.”
William James Richardson IV Age: 13 Youth & Teen Center
Jacob Hirvela
Victoria Lucsok
“I love when my parents go to help people through volunteering. I also enjoy going off base to eat at Baskin Robbin’s and Coco’s with my sister!”
“I get to travel and make new friends. I can learn about different cultures firsthand, including Japan. I enjoy living on base where I can understand the language, and when I travel to new places in Japan, I get to experience things that I have never seen before. I can also help others and feel more responsible and mature. I also feel safe on the military base. That is how I feel about being a military child.”

“I love playing Pac-Man games at school, seeing my friends, food and playing with Magna-Tiles. I also love being with my Mom.”
“I live next to the pool where I love to go swimming. I like the noodles and broccoli in Japan, watching T.V. and I have friends here.”

It can be difficult changing schools and being overseas in a new country can create a language barrier. However, I love making friends around the globe and that’s really what being a military child means to me.”

Fuji Shibazakura Festival, held between mid-April through early June, is one of the most popular locations to view stunning shibazakura flowers. In English, shibazakura translates to “pink moss” or “phlox moss.” The venue of the festival is located just south of Lake Motosuko in the Fuji Five Lakes area, offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, with the vast shibazakura flower field in the foreground. The best time to see the flowers varies from year-to-year, but usually falls into the first few weeks of May. Approximately 800,000 stalks of shibazakura of five varieties will be on display, producing delightful fields of pink, white and purple colors in different hues. Festival stalls selling pots of pink moss, Shibazakura-themed souvenirs, food and local produce complete the festival. While visiting, enjoy a delightful Chinese buffet lunch at the Highland Resort Hotel. This tour will also take you all the way to the fifth station of Mount Fuji, via the Subaru Line, so you can enjoy all the beauty of this bold dormant volcano. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture all of the incredible sights!

HORIZONS APRIL 2017
AERO CLUB & FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER
FLIGHT SAFETY & THE YOKOTA FTC/AERO CLUB We recognize flight safety as our primary objective and by raising the aviation safety bar to a higher level requires a team effort from all aviators flying in and outside of Yokota’s airspace. To keep with our safety program, below is a list of nine recommended practices and procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Increase pilot awareness on accident causes. Improve safety culture within the aviation community. Improve pilot training (i.e., weather briefing, equipment, decision-making and human factors.) Improve the quality and substance of weather briefs. Enhance the flight review and/or instrument competency check. Develop and distribute mountain-flying technique advisory material. Eliminate the pressure to complete the flight where continuing may compromise safety. Strives to ensure that our aviation activities operate as safely as possible. This means flying with airworthy aircraft operated by competent Airmen after good flight preparation. 9. Comply with all regulations applicable to us and to limit the risks inherent in flying as much as possible. Our Mission: Our number one priority is no accidents. To accomplish this, we encourage increasing knowledge of safe aviation among our customers, members and staff, which produces an environment in which safety has high precedence and becomes second nature.
