Top Eight Tips for
Climbing Mount Fuji Every year, thousands of locals and tourists visit mystical Mount Fuji during the months of July and August to trek the over 12,000 foot mountain. If you’re interested in taking on the challenge, then check out the tips below so you can successfully reach the peak!
1
2
3
4
Be well rested
Avoid wearing cotton
Climb at a steady pace
Wear hard sole boots
Make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep before the big hike. The climb is rigorous and requires all of your focus and energy to make it to the summit.
The temperature fluctuates throughout the climb from warm/hot at the base to freezing at the peak. Since cotton products do not dry quickly, breathable and waterproof materials are recommended.
Take several short breaks and stay hydrated throughout your hike. Avoid long breaks as you may have a difficult time continuing the trek.
Due to the uneven trail, it is important to wear shoes which will protect your feet and keep you from slipping. Tennis shoes are not recommended.
5
6
7
8
Bring durable rain gear
Watch the time
Do not over pack
Bring extra yen
Pack a heavy-duty rain jacket and pants. Ponchos are not recommended.
Ascending can take anywhere from five to seven hours, while descending averages three and a half hours. Due to exhaustion and loose rocks on the way down, descending can be even more difficult than climbing.
Your backpack can weigh you down. Only pack the essentials (a full list is available through ODR). There are several huts throughout the climb with food and water which you can stop at during your trek.
Take small bills and coins for the bathroom, water and snacks. If you would like to collect memorabilia, bring enough yen to purchase a climbing pole (¥1,000-1,200) at the fifth station and collect stamps (¥250-500 each) along the way.
Stop by Outdoor Recreation (ODR) and conveniently rent all of the necessary gear for climbing Mount Fuji including gaiters, rain gear, hiking boots and poles. Check out page 13 for a full list of August Mount Fuji trips ODR has to offer. For additional tips on climbing Mount Fuji, a full list of necessary gear and an overview of the climb, visit YokotaFSS.com/odr/#fuji.

Winner
2017 BGCA Fine Arts Contest
Yokota Youth Programs Presents
Leilany’s print submission, Hidden Figures.
School Age Care attendee Leilany Ware has been selected as the winner for the prestigious 2017 Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) Fine Arts award in the printmaking category for her piece Hidden Figures. She was one out of thousands of youth to submit artwork to BGCA’s National Fine Art Exhibit. Eight-year-old Leilany, child of MSgt Davisha and MSgt Deone Ware, first discovered her love for art last year in first grade while taking art classes. Her passion for art motivated her to submit her print for BGCA’s National Art Exhibit, “Art is a way for me to express myself and show my creative side. Hidden Figures was inspired by other drawings I have seen with hidden figures within the drawing. For this piece, there are hidden faces. My art is often influenced by other creative artworks around me.” The BGCA encourages youth from all over to express themselves through a variety of art including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture. These unique artworks are first put on display at both local and regional exhibits for the local community to enjoy. From here, a panel of distinguished judges select arts works to be presented at the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Being selected to have her art exhibited on a national-level is an outstanding accomplishment for Leilany, “I feel really honored and proud that all of my hard work paid off.” Outside of creating art, Leilany is a fun-loving girl who enjoys dancing, playing outside, creating entertaining activities and spending time with her family. With all of her talents and ambitions, Leilany has a bright future ahead of her!

In addition to Nintendo, other big name companies including Sony and Microsoft have consistently attended over the years. In the past, new releases and updates have included popular game consoles such as PlayStation Portable (PSP) and Xbox. Held annually in Chiba, Japan by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), this worldrenowned convention is one of the largest game shows worldwide. Throughout a two-day period, TGS garners over 250,000 video game enthusiast. Last year, more than 345 exhibitors from 36 countries and regions participated, exceeding the previous year’s attendance. This year, spectators can experience exciting new technologies in play style such as Virtual Reality and e-Sport, which will be displayed on a variety of platforms from consoles and smart phones to PCs.
