Don’t run when the weather is icy.

Know where to find shelter on your route.

Dress in layers. As the days get shorter, wear bright or reflective, so motorists can see you.

Fire Walking Fest ival

at Mt. Takao S u n • 12 M a r Cultural Connection

On the second Sunday of March each year, the Yakuoin Temple at Mt. Takao performs the firewalking festival. At the festival, Yamabushi (practicing monks) and other worshippers first pray for protection against sickness, calamity and safety within the family and then walk barefoot over the sacred fire that is smoldering and burning. The sight of Yamabushi bravely walking through the flames while chanting brings the event’s highlight. After the fire has been put out, public spectators may also participate. By that time, the actual temperature of the path is only slightly warm to step on and there is no worry of burning their feet. If you would like to participate, it is recommended to bring a wet towel or something else to clean your feet with after the walking. The flames and smoke are considered to purify people by burning all defilements away.
