LONG DISTANCE IN THE MILITARY
MISSING OUT ON HOLIDAYS, BIRTHDAYS AND EVERDAY MOMENTS DUE TO OVERSEAS TOURS, LONG DEPLOYMENTS AND TDY’S CAN TAKE ITS TOLL ON MILITARY COUPLES. WE TALKED TO A FEW COUPLES WHOSE LOVE SHINES THROUGH EVEN WHEN THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY.
F
or about a year, Staff Sgt. Ashley Terry and her husband Quentin have been in a long-distance marriage. They met through the military where they instantly connected. When it came time for him to go on a oneyear overseas tour, they knew their bond was something special, so they continued to pursue their relationship. “It’s difficult being away from one another over long periods of time. We’ve spent our first year of marriage apart. We both miss just being together, having quality time and that immediate support system,” Terry, NCOIC Commander Support Staff said. Like all military couples, the Terry’s combat separation by maintaining communication everyday. “We talk about everything and nothing at all. Just having him there on FaceTime is the closest I can get to him being with me. It allows us to still connect and keep each other up-to-date. Sometimes we do things together like watch movies or cook,” Terry said. Terry and her husband have been fortunate in that they’ve both been able to travel to see one another often. He has visited Japan a few times now and they love being able to explore new things together. A few of their favorite experiences were visiting Tokyo Tower, Round 1, Virtual Reality (VR) Zone and Tama Zoo. Despite the distance, the Terry’s are currently planning a wedding celebration with friends and family for after Quentin’s tour. “It’s challenging being apart during this process. We don’t get to go see the venue, go taste wedding cakes, pick out flowers, etc. It’s something we definitely would have wanted to do together in person instead
of online, but we’ve still found a way to make decisions together,” Terry said. During the springtime, Terry will be moving back stateside with her three-year old daughter Aubrey. However, Quentin will still be fulfilling his overseas duty during this time. “One of the biggest obstacles is going to be moving everything without his help and we will still be separated almost up until our wedding in the fall,” Terry said. Through it all though, even if he can’t be there physically, she knows that she has Quentin to lean on. “He’s my sanity. He keeps me grounded and has helped me make it through some tough days. I’m just looking forward to the day when we no longer have to be apart. When we can all be living under one home together with our two kids and dogs,” Terry said.
Another couple maintaining a long-distance marriage is Senior Airman Don Sandridge and his wife Tianna. They have been together for almost five years now after growing a friendship and eventually falling in love while stationed at Beale Air Force Base, California. When he was reassigned to Yokota Air Base, breaking up wasn’t an option. “Distance doesn’t make or break a relationship when you truly love someone. If there’s a will, there’s a way. Not being able to be there all the time and the limited ability to support her is difficult for me. I miss her a lot, but communication is definitely key. We talk often to stay connected,” Sandridge, Combat Arms Instructor said. They’ve only seen each other twice since they were separated nearly a year ago, but they certainly make the most of their time together.
“I explode with excitement when I see her. Holding her tight and finally getting to kiss her is like heaven. Our favorite things to do once we’re together is go to music parks, hang out and go out to dinner. Anything where we get to just enjoy being together,” Sandridge said. Sandridge plans to be reunited with his wife sometime this year. “We’re hoping that she will be able to join me here in Japan by spring of this year. We just want to be able to finally live together as husband and wife.” Aside from unaccompanied tours and married couples stationed at different bases, many military couples and families experience long deployments and TDY’s. Captain Nathaniel Roesler and his wife Aliece had to endure a six-month deployment not long after getting married. “We missed out on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, birthdays and more. It was so hard spending those first few months away from him. I was fortunate to have a great support system and a job that kept me busy, but nothing could possibly replace him being there,” Aliece said. Regardless of distance and other obstacles many military couples face - they work together everyday to keep the love alive. 374 FSS celebrates its military couple’s strength and we wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day! Check out page 6 for ideas on places to take your loved ones on this very special day.
“I LOVE THAT WE BALANCE EACH OTHER OUT. HE’S RESERVED, I’M OUTGOING. I ALSO LOVE HIS INTELLIGENCE AND HIS MATURITY. HE IS AN AMAZING FATHER. HE HAS HIS OWN DAUGHTER, BUT HE ALSO LOVES MY DAUGHTER AS IF SHE WAS HIS OWN. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR RELATIONSHIP EXCEPT THE DISTANCE. HE’S MY SANITY, HE KEEPS ME GROUNDED.” –Staff Sgt. Ashley Terry, husband Quentin Terry
“HE CAN MAKE ME LAUGH EVEN WHEN I’M NOT HAVING THE BEST DAY. HE IS MY BEST FRIEND - I FEEL COMFORTABLE GOING TO HIM ABOUT ANYTHING AND I KNOW HE WON’T JUDGE ME. HE IS ALWAYS CONSIDERATE OF ME AND MAKES ME FEEL LOVED AND APPRECIATED. WE WORK WELL TOGETHER BECAUSE WE BALANCE EACH OTHER OUT. HE ALWAYS PUSHES ME TO TRY NEW THINGS AND BE THE BEST IN ALL THAT I DO.” – Aliece Roesler, husband Captain Nathaniel Roesler

“WE’VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR EIGHT YEARS NOW AND I LOVE THAT THROUGH EVERYTHING, SHE HAS ALWAYS REMAINED TRUE TO HERSELF. SHE IS THE SWEETEST AND MOST CARING PERSON I KNOW AND SHE HAS THIS STRENGTH AND PERSEVERANCE ABOUT HER THAT PUSHES ME TO BE MY BEST SELF. Sun • 4 Mar Cultural Connection
Ancient Japanese village, Iyashino-sato, stands on the site of a former farming village on the western shores of Lake Saiko. The village was reconstructed and reopened as an open air museum and traditional craft village where people can learn about the culture and buy different local handicrafts. The village is made up of more than twenty houses that have been converted into shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Each of the shops specializes in a traditional craft such as pottery, incense or weaving. A few of the houses contain museums, such as the Watanabe House which has exhibits on the daily life of the farmers who used to live in the region. The remaining houses include an art gallery that displays local artworks, a produce shop and a portrait studio where visitors can try on kimonos or samurai armor for a small fee and take photos. Restaurants with local Japanese foods and rest houses can also be found around the village. Next, we will visit the small village of Oshino in the Fuji Five Lake region, located between Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several hundred years ago. It has a set of eight ponds which are fed by snow melt from the slopes of nearby Mount Fuji that has filtered down the mountain through porous layers of lava for over 80 years, resulting in very clear spring water that is revered by the locals. The Mount Fuji World Heritage Center is located at the base of the mountain and is known for being a World Heritage site to local visitors as well as to travelers from around the world. Conservation efforts and studies are also conducted here. The center of the main exhibition room features a large replica of Mount Fuji made of Japanese paper that is 50 foot in diameter. It acts as a three-dimensional screen and displays Mount Fuji changing with the seasons using brightly-colored illuminations. The first floor is also covered by an image of Mount Fuji and stations have been set up using videos and audio recordings to explain the history of the Fuji religious beliefs and crafts inspired by Japan’s most sacred mountain.
