I n f o r m a t i o n , Ti c k e t s & T r a v e l ( I TT ) All year long, ITT provides easy and stress-free day trips for all Yokota residents that vary from monthto-month. Visit popular festivals or spend a day at Tokyo Disney, watch a thrilling Sumo tournament or observe adorable snow monkeys in Nagano; with so many options, you’re bound to find the perfect trip for your family. One of the most popular trips is to Manns Winery in the Yamanashi Prefecture, a town literally covered in grapes for harvesting. Once you have toured and tasted 20 pristine wines, learn about the great warrior Takeda Shingen at Samurai Temple. Finish the day at the Shosenkyo Gorge with gorgeous panoramic views of the Southern Alps and mystical Mount Fuji. ITT also offers great deals on Shinkansen packages to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima; bundling the bullet train tickets and your hotel. In Kyoto, discover the Imperial Palace and devour delicious local food. While in Osaka, experience thrilling rides at Universal Studios and visit Osaka’s main historical landmark: the sixteenth-century shogunate Osaka Castle. If you’re looking to travel outside of Japan, ITT will assist you with planning your entire vacation, including visa application assistance. They’re your one-stop shop for all things related to travel!
AERO CL U B The Yokota Aero Club offers different ways for you to enjoy flying on and off the ground. Begin your New Year by experiencing the breathtaking views of Tokyo first-hand on a private flight with two of your closest friends or family members. If you want to find out if you’d enjoy pilot training, stop by to try the Redbird FMX/CL full-motion flight simulator. It will give you all the sensations of flying without ever needing to leave the ground! For those passionate about flying, the Aero Club has everything you need for flight training and earning your pilot license. For more information about General Aviation, stop by a Flight Safety Meeting, held monthly at the Enlisted Club. Visit page 25 for additional information.
Tama Hills Enjoy a staycation at Tama Hills by booking a stay at one of their cozy lodges or pitching a tent and exploring the great outdoors on 500 acres of land. During your visit, pamper yourself with a relaxing massage, saddle-up for a horseback ride, rent a bicycle or practice perfecting your archery skills. Each month, Tama invites airmen to participate in their thrilling Tamattack Paintball tournament in addition to a variety of golf tournaments, great for spending a spectacular day on the green. Also, if you’re seeking a cultural experience, Tama Hills hosts the Inagi Festival every year, giving you a taste of Japan with traditional food, music and attire.
Arts & Crafts Join Arts & Crafts as they visit local craft shops in Japan where you can enhance your art skills and broaden your horizons. This includes refining pottery proficiency, venturing off to art galleries, and learning all about Japanese paper making. If you’re interested in trying out painting, pottery, Japanese gift wrapping or calligraphy, Arts & Crafts has exciting classes. Additionally, Arts & Crafts invites photographers and adventurers alike to explore beautiful destinations; most popularly the mesmerizing Shiraito Falls and enchanting Mount Fuji Milky Way. The focus of these trips are typically capturing the gorgeous landscape and discovering a different and spectacular view of Japan. After exploring, visit Arts & Crafts to print photographs from all your travels abroad.
Teen & Youth Throughout the year, Teen and Youth Programs facilitate trips geared towards youth, teens and their families. These trips are also available for both members and nonmembers to join in on the fun. Some of the trips include Summerland, Disney, Fuji-Q and fruit picking in Japan. Another popular trip is to Hakone Yunessun Spa & Resort. This spa is a fun, family-friendly trip featuring red wine, coffee and sake baths while children enjoy an exhilarating water slide. Also, if you have a teen that loves electronic games and anime, then Akihabara is the perfect opportunity for them to indulge in shopping dedicated to all the anime characters they know and love. Check with the Teen and Youth centers each month so you don’t miss out on all of the fun.
Ou t d o o r R e c r e a t i o n Winter, spring, summer or fall, ODR has it all! Looking to bungee jump, paraglide, experience snow adventures or conquer the glorious Mount Fuji while in Japan? Zenko-ji Light-Up Festival
&
Matsumoto Castle Febr u a r y Cultural Connection
The city of Nagano gained international recognition after hosting the 18th Winter Olympics in 1998. Prior to its claim to Olympic fame, the city was well-known for the seventhcentury Buddhist temple, Zenkō-ji, which continues to tower over the historical city. Zenkō-ji remains sacred to locals and continues to be utilized as a place of daily prayer and worship. In front of Zenko-ji lies a vast incense burner where visitors rub incense on their bodies for good fortune and health at early morning blessing ceremonies. Additionally, Zenkō-ji is one of the few remaining pilgrimage sites within Japan. Every year in February, the prominent temple is covered in thousands of beautiful lights that illuminate the entire city.
Another attraction in Nagano is the great Matsumoto Castle that was costructed over 500 years ago. The historical castle is world-renowned for being one of Japan’s premier wooden structures and still maintains its original wooden interiors and beautiful external stonework after many centuries. Within Matsumoto Castle lies the oldest structure in the castle category of Japan’s national treasures: the Northwest Small Tower, a Bunroku-era donjon. Historically, Matsumoto Castle primarily served as a military fortification and residence for the daimyo, or feudal lord, and his family. Each year, thousands of visitors are captivated by the castle and the breathtaking views of the surrounding Japanese Alps.

What is a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)? TCAS is a group of airborne devices that function separately from the ground-based Air Traffic Control system (ATC). It provides collision avoidance protection for a broad spectrum of aircraft types and allows pilots to successfully fly in low visibility conditions; especially at busy airports! All versions of TCAS offer some degree of collision threat alerting and a traffic display. Specifically, TCAS I versus II differs primarily in its alerting capabilities. For example, TCAS I provides traffic advisories (TAs) used to assist the pilot in the visual acquisition of intruder aircraft. In the Unites States, TCAS I is mandated for use in passenger-carrying, turbine powered aircraft that have more than 10 and less than 31 seats. Regardless of the plane’s size, TCAS will work the same. However, it only works on aircrafts that are equipped with transponders. Pilots will also discover TCAS I gives information on the position of the ‘intruding plane’ in reference to the aircraft’s bubble of protection area, while TCAS II gives pilots command to climb, descend or maintain altitude to avoid aircrafts from colliding into each other. Yokota’s Aero Club & Flight Training Center has installed TCAS I in aircrafts, and the system is also installed in numerous general aviation fixed wing aircrafts and helicopters. For more information or for instructions on how to use TCAS, stop by the Aero Club!

The famed Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano opened its gates to the public in 1964. Since then, millions of tourists worldwide embark on a journey up the snowy mountain at an elevation of over 2,700 feet for a chance to see Japan’s treasured Macaque or “Snow Monkeys.” Featured on many documentary specials, including National Geographic, the park’s monkeys are native to northern Japan and are known to thrive in winter temperatures while taking an occasional bath in natural hot springs that are tucked between the mountain’s valleys. Resembling human-like features, Snow Monkeys have distinctive red faces, hands and bottoms, a short tail and fur varying in colors of brown and gray. Males weigh approximately 20 to 30 pounds and females weigh half the size between 10 to 12 pounds. These long-time Nagano residents feed mostly on seeds, buds, invertebrates, leaves and tree bark; making the mountain’s lush forest and its untouched resources an ideal living environment. In addition to the area’s abundant feeding resources, the park’s location in Jogokudani translates to “Hell Valley,” describing its steep cliffs and several natural hot springs steaming out from the earth’s surface. Several hundred monkeys flock to these springs throughout the day for a chance to enjoy themselves in nature’s spa paradise. Park visitors are able to observe these monkeys in their natural habitat as they take a dip in the relaxing warm water and playfully chase each other through the thick snow after a 20 to 30 minute moderate hike on an unpaved snowy trail. All around the park, monkeys can also be seen grooming each other or curiously watching passersby. We highly recommend bringing your camera for a fun photo opportunity with these mischievous monkeys.
