HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

ALEXANDER, 10

BLAIRE, 10

“I love playing sports with my dad, especially basketball. I have played with him since I was little and he’s taught me so much! He also is always making me laugh.”

“I like to play sports with him, like basketball and softball. He’s very humorous and makes me happy when I’m sad. He cheers me up and gets me to laugh. My dad is one of my biggest heroes. He’s always there for me.”

Dad: Billy Richardson, Youth Sports Director

Dad: TSgt Travis Mitchell, 5AF/A6OS

FROM 374 FSS

Father’s play such a vital role in their children’s lives; from teaching life lessons to being a role model each and every day. We visited the Youth & Teen Center and met with a few members who told us all about their outstanding fathers.

LIAM, 17 Keystone President

JORDAN, 16 Keystone Vice President

“I admire that he works hard. He has inspired my interest in civil engineering. I am graduating this year and am thinking about pursuing mechanical engineering because of him. Our favorite thing to do is joke around about the news and T.V. shows.”

“I adore him for stepping up as my father. He’s my stepdad but he loves me as if I was his own child. I love spending time with him and look up to him for all that he does for me and my mom. Right now I am learning to drive and he is incredibly patient with me.”

KUMAGAYA N I G H T F E S T I V A L (KUMAGAYA UCHIWA MATSURI) S a t • 2 2 Ju l Cultural Connection

Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri is held in Kumagaya city, located in the northern part of Saitama Prefecture. This festival is hosted by Yasaka Shrine to ward off ailments and pray for good harvest and prosperous business. Every year, the festival takes place for three days during the third week of July. During this time, people gather from all over Japan to join in on the festivities. Throughout Japan, matsuri, or festivals, are very popular during the summertime. Kumagaya is among the many cities that hosts several matsuri’s all summer long. One of the most prominent

matsuri, Kumagaya Uchiwa, is known for its Uchiwa fans which are flat and are made of paper and bamboo or plastic and wood. These delicate handmade fans are distributed throughout the festival to keep festival-goers cool in the hot and humid summer heat. This tradition originated in the nineteenth century when local shops would hand out Uchiwa fans to hot passersby. Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri is one of the most famous festivals in the Kanto region with a dynamic procession of floats and festival music. This dazzling parade features twelve exquisitely decorated

floats moving to the sound of flutes, drums and small gongs. One of these floats displays young men drumming in unison, also known as tatakiai. On the third night of the festival, the streets are lined with food stands and musical accompaniment reaches its peak as the floats come together at the festival square. Don’t miss out on this oncein-a-lifetime event!

GIVE PARENTS A BREAK (GPAB) See pg. 27 The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) recognizes that Air Force families are subject to unique stresses due to the

nature of military life - deployments, remote tours of duty, extended working hours, etc. In an effort to help these families, AFAS, in cooperation with the Air Force child care community, has agreed to provide funding for child care for active duty Air Force families. The purpose of this program is to offer eligible active duty Air Force parents a few hours break from the stresses of parenting.
