“Don’t limit yourself and don’t ever give up. Realize you’re capable of doing whatever it is that you want to do. Don’t let yourself be limited by external forces. If it’s a desire of your heart, go forward. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get there the first time, keep going until you reach your destination.”

“Hard work pays off. Even when challenges come, don’t take the easy road. Learn from your mistakes and always push forward. At the end of day everything will work out – you might have to do things you don’t want to do at times, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.”

“Don’t let someone say you can’t do something because you can. You limit yourself, other people can’t limit you. You define you, no one else defines you. Don’t allow anyone else to paint you in a box. Often we let peer pressure dictate who we are and what we can do based off of others. We’re a lot stronger than we think we are. Use your voice, speak up, be heard.”

T

he word “empowerment” has expanded, inverted, politicized and is now bracingly synonymous with “Women’s History Month.” It stirs inspiration when spoken aloud and paints a picture of “Rosie the Riveter” or “Wonder Woman.” Centuries of extraordinary women collectively depict a portrait of strength for today’s generation of feminists. They continue to infuse “power” into the ever-inspiring word “empowerment.” In honor of Women’s History Month, 374th Force Support Squadron spoke with a select group of female leaders within its dynamic organization about empowerment, what inspires them and how decades of women’s movements paved paths for them that were never before imaginable.

18

horizons March 2018

Before Women’s History Month was officially recognized by U.S. Congress in 1987, an International Women’s Day was celebrated globally in the early 1900s. For nearly 11 decades, women across the world have joined together to overcome barriers of unjust treatment. Chief Master Sgt. Tresse King has dedicated her career to speaking up and igniting change, “It’s important to step up and be the voice for those who feel voiceless. Change came because I challenged the status quo,” she said. Defying the odds is the essence of Women’s History Month – with generations of activists fervently working to triumph and prevail over hardships of gender inequality. One of the most influential women in history, Susan B. Anthony, fought passionately for the women’s right to vote and was a leader in the abolitionist movement. From suffragettes to women in government, millions of defiant advocates

“Life is about taking chances and building relationships and friendships. If you don’t take risks or challenges in your life, then you’ll never know your potential. Never be afraid to make big decisions even if you’re not sure about the outcome. Don’t be afraid to jump into something because that’s how you make your way through life. Make that leap and you will reach potentials that you may not know you had.”

“Remind yourself of what you have been through to get to this point. Have mantra’s that say, ‘yes I can do it,’ and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. You are smart, you are a great leader, you are beautiful.”

“Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it can’t be done. You can be the one to do it! People say, ‘I can’t,’ but my golden rule when people say why – I say why not? You have to reach beyond the gap and find your own path to reaching your goals. Everyone has their own unique way, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t make it the same way someone else did.”

like her have triumphed over social norms to create more opportunities for the modern-day woman to have an advantage and a voice in today’s society. “I’m often the only woman in a room full of a dozen men in uniform or more, which at times can be really intimidating. But I feel empowered to speak up which is essential in my position because my job is to support my Airmen and provide them the proper tools to be successful,” Capt. Jennifer Smith, superintendent of Sustainment Services said. During early colonial times, women served in the U.S. military working strictly during times of war, primarily in roles of non-combatant support. Nearly three centuries later in 1948, Congress legally permitted women to serve as permanent members of the military. Since then, military service women continue to make great strides which has been a driving force for Smith since her childhood.

“Growing up in a corrupt and violent area, I was inspired to join the Air Force to protect the people I love and it’s empowering to have the choice to make a difference in this world,” she said. Smith was afforded the opportunity to influence change as a direct impact of efforts made by centuries of women before her who fought for the right to serve in the U.S. military. Similarly to Smith, Chief King, superintendent of 374 FSS, also wanted to make a difference by joining the Air Force. With a highly decorated 26year career, King has achieved the highest non-commissioned officer rank which encompasses roughly only one percent of the Air Force enlisted force. According to the Military Personnel Data System (MilPDS), women make up approximately 19 percent of active duty enlisted and 21 percent active duty officers. Even in small numbers, women continue to break barriers and

Affectionately called sakura by Japanese, the recognition of cherry blossoms began over 1,000 years ago during the Heian period in Japan. People were so breathtaken by their beauty that they would a stare endlessly in awe, unknowingly planting the seed for a new tradition called hanami, which directly translates to “watch the flower.” During modern-day hanami, families, friends and couples will gather beneath sakura trees to enjoy the view as they picnic, sip sake or simply relax. In the early 1970s, the Japanese government planted sakura trees on McGuire Avenue at Yokota Air Base as a sign of friendship. Over 40 years later, we are using those same majestic cherry blossoms to build a sense of community with our Japanese neighbors. In early April, Yokota opens its east gate to allow our off-base friends an opportunity to admire these symbols of friendship lining McGuire Avenue. Grab a picnic blanket and head out early to secure a spot under the sakura. Wander the street and peruse different food and beverage vendors. Whether you’re interested in iconic Japanese festival food or looking forward to a piece of home with traditional American food – the Sakura Festival has it all. But don’t stick to your picnic blanket, there is still plenty to see and hear. With live performances from the PACAF Band and the Samurai Taiko Drummers, as well as face painting and balloon artists, there is fun and entertainment readily available for the entire family. Sakura typically stays in bloom for about two weeks during the spring. Don’t miss your chance to experience this piece of Japanese culture in your own backyard!
