Turbo Kick
Mon • 6:30–7:30 p.m. Sat • 10:15–11:15 a.m. $3/Class • SFC Kick and punch your way through this sweaty class. Turbo Kick incorporates kickboxing, HIIT and body-weight training for an intense, full-body workout, all choreographed to upbeat music. Strengthen your abs, arms and legs while also increasing your heart and breathing rate. Complete a series of warmup rounds including jabs and round-house kicks. This leads up to a fast-paced, intense round known as the “finale” — a compilation of all exercises done within the previous rounds. Wind down with a series of ab exercises and stretches. Kelli, the approachable instructor, goes over each move beforehand and leads students through each workout. She tells students, “You’ll get more comfortable with the moves but it never gets easy.” Get your butt-kicked at Turbo Kick!
Zumba These are just a few of the classes available at the Natatorium and SFC. To see what other classes they have to offer, see pages 29 and 30.

Mon • 5:15–6:15 p.m. Tue/Thu • 5:15–6:15 p.m. Wed/Sat • 9–10 a.m. Ages 16 & Up $3/Class • SFC $3/Class • Natatorium Tired of completing the same old exercises when you’d rather dance? Come join the party at Zumba and U-Jam! A fusion of dance and fitness — Zumba and U-Jam help burn calories and build endurance. Improve your run time by adding these classes to your regular workout routine. U-Jam incorporates urban dance whereas Zumba is rooted in Latin dance. Rock out and work out as Lynn — the energetic and charismatic instructor — guides you through each dance-inducing, catchy song. Have two left feet? No worries! You don’t have to complete the choreography perfectly to reap the benefits. Even beginners eventually find themselves dancing, shouting and high fiving with their fellow dancers.

E PT TEST WITH
Don’t stress over the PT test. Prepare in advance with FSS! The Natatorium and Samurai Fitness Center (SFC) offer numerous, out-of-the-box classes to help you get in shape.
Jiu Jitsu
Mon–Fri Mon/Wed/Thu Times Vary 6:30–7:30 p.m. $8/Class • Natatorium $70/Month • SFC Strengthen your physical and mental abilities with Jiu Jitsu! Jiu Jitsu boosts stamina and strength while also burning calories — a great way to prepare for all portions of the PT test. Roll and crawl your way across the gym floor during warmup which typically includes exercises unique to martial arts such as breakfalls and shrimping. Then, learn martial art moves from the instructor and practice them with a partner. During the sparring portion of class, test the moves you’ve learned as you wrestle a willing opponent. The Natatorium offers a range of classes including beginner, advanced and even a women’s class. SFC’s classes are for all levels; beginners can rest assured that when the going gets tough, a quick rest and drink of water will bring them back to the mat.
Water Aerobics
Tue & Thu • 6:15–7 p.m. Wed & Fri • 11:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Free • Natatorium Shake things up by taking your workout to the water! Use water resistance and pool equipment to build muscle in Water Aerobics. Class begins with a quick warmup to get the body moving. Feel your body fight against the water as you complete a variety of fullbody exercises exclusive to water aerobics. Complete crunches as you cling to the pool wall or use your arm and leg muscles to propel through the water. End class with a good stretch. Swim laps during Natatorium’s Lap Swim for added cardio!
CHICHIBU NIGHT FESTIVAL Mon • 3 Dec Cultural Connection
Considered one of Japan’s top three festivals, Chichibu Night Festival stands up to its reputation with giant spectacular floats, captivating plays and music. Witness the main event which includes six floats paraded through the city streets, accompanied by drums and flutes. Each float is ornately decorated with lanterns, tapestries and gilded woodcarvings. Watch in awe as the floats transform into stages and Kabuki plays are performed. Food stalls line the streets selling fair foods like takoyaki, bite-size kasutera and okonomiyaki throughout the event. Combat the chilly December night by sipping on a festivalfavorite drink known as “Amazake,” or sweet wine. Then, marvel at the fireworks show which provides onlookers the rare opportunity to enjoy Japanese fireworks during the winter season.

CHRISTMAS CERAMIC ORNAMENT PAINTING
Meet Monique Wilson: Air Force Photo Contest Winner
LIFE & LEISURE
“THE ABILITY TO CAPTURE A MOMENT IS WHAT DREW ME TO PHOTOGRAPHY.” Monique recently won first place in the Air Force Photography Contest 13–17 year old category. Her image, “As Free as The Ocean”, taken in April while vacationing in Guam, is a wash of blazing sunset colors and deep, rich shadows above a vast, picturesque ocean-scape. The view resonated with the 17-year-old who typically prefers taking pictures of people rather than landscapes. “I saw [the ocean view] as a metaphor for freedom,” she explained. Monique credits her win to Yokota High School Art Teacher, Margaret Appleby, who encouraged Monique to enter the award-winning photograph. Her first photographic exposure was a small Canon camera she received three years ago as a Christmas present from her mother, Chief Master Sergeant Nicole Wilson. Monique now works exclusively with Nikon cameras — a fan favorite of portrait photographers. The high school senior’s year-long internship at Pacific Stars and Stripes likely developed her photography skills. Viewers of “As Free as the Ocean” may be surprised to learn Shibuya is Monique’s favorite photography location. She explained her love for the bustling area: “There is just a mass of people and always something interesting [going on] there.” Monique classifies her photographic talent as a “hobby.” Her other passions include soccer, cross-country and basketball. She also loves art and finds people the most interesting subject to draw. As a first-place winner, Monique Wilson will receive a certificate, a $500 Amazon gift card, a Force Support Squadron gift card and her image on display at the AF Agency in San Antonio and the MyAirForceLife.com website. Monique recommends young photographers take as many photographs as possible because, as she explained, “you can’t capture the same image twice.”

ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS
The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) believes Enhanced Vision (EV) and Synthetic Vision (SV) technology can significantly improve general aviation utility and reduce the chance of accidents during night and Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) operations. LIFE & LEISURE
SYNTHETIC VISION Unlike EV, SV does not use sensors to “see” outside. Instead, SV relies on GPS information and a database to create a virtual representation of the outside world that you, as the pilot, would see. Using information from navigation databases, SV creates a picture of the flight environment and overlays that picture with aircraft instrumentation and weather information to create a single image that contains all of the information necessary for safe flight operations. One key advantage is that SV can be “installed” in many aircraft with minimal expense or effort. ENHANCED VISION EV systems use sensors to provide a better view of the outside world. These aircraft-based sensors use near-infrared cameras or millimeter wave radar to provide vision in limited visibility environments. EV systems can identify terrain in weather and detect wildlife or other obstructions on the runway. EV does however take some getting used to. You’ll have to make the transition to visual reference at some point, and that can be a challenge — especially if you’re not viewing the world through a Head-Up Display. Information obtained from the FAA ADVISORY Circular; “T=Terrain Avoidance: What does it Take to Use NVGS?”; and “X-Ray Vision and Alphabet Soup.”
