The Best Serving the Best—FSS!
FSS Employee Spotlight
Dennis Patton
Hometown: Boulder, Colorado What is your job and how long have you worked with Yokota FSS? I have been working as a Child & Youth Program Assistant for the prekindergarten age group since November 2016. Describe your typical day on the job. I primarily work with three to five year old children. Each day is a mix of working through lesson plans, regular routines and keeping each child engaged to have a great experience every day. Since joining FSS, what has been your most rewarding experience? Every day is rewarding to me, knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of children by helping them to develop and meet milestones. It is especially great when parents thank me for assisting their child and their overall development. What got you into your career field? After retiring from my career with the exchange, I knew I had to remain connected with the Yokota community. I wanted to continue to serve those who are serving our nation. What better way than to help develop and grow the minds of their children! What are your hobbies? I love the outdoors; especially skiing, biking and hiking. I am also a music lover and enjoy playing guitar. What is something you’ve always wanted to try? I have been very fortunate to have challenged myself to many things. Next on my to-do list is definitely bungee jumping or skydiving.
Magdalena Smith-Zieba Hometown: Walbrzych, Poland

Friendship Festival
Sat & Sun • 16 & 17 Sep 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Hangar 15 & Adjacent Flight Line
Each year in September, Yokota Air Base opens the gates to the Japanese community for its renowned Friendship Festival. Last year, this popular festival attracted over 120,000 Yokota residents and Japanese locals alike. This year, both nations will join together again in harmony to enjoy two days filled with delicious festival food, parades, live music and exciting activities for the entire family. This coveted event celebrates the decades long Japanese-American relationship, allowing local nationals to enter the normally gated and secured flight line. “Friendship Festival is the one time of the year that we get to open the gates to our wonderful neighbors and let them see up close what it is that we do on Yokota every day. It’s our way of saying thank you and continuing to strengthen our close relationship with our host nation,” 374 AW/PA SMSgt Gregory Bluethmann said. Over the span of two days, there will be 39 performances including live bands, Taiko drummers, dancers, cheerleaders and karate demonstrations. Additionally, there will be an exhilarating Japanese sword fight between professional swordsmen. Activities for children include bouncy castles, games and exploring a variety of aircraft. One of the biggest highlights of Friendship Festival is the extraordinary Strongman Competition which takes place on the Main Stage on day two. During this nearly three-hour long event, Yokota
18

residents and local nationals will compete in a variety of categories including farmer’s walk, overhead log press, tire flip, yoke walk and truck pull. “This competition provides an outlet for strongmen to come out and put their strength to the test, lifting as much as 400 pounds and pulling up to 3,000 pounds. Bystanders can also enjoy a thrilling bus pull exhibition by a special guest strongman,” 374 FSS Fitness Center’s SSgt Breona Battle said. In addition to live performances and fun-filled activities, there will be 80 on-base and local vendors providing a variety of freshly prepared foods throughout the flight line. Attendees can dine on western favorites, as well as delicious Japanese and international cuisines. From juicy steaks, turkey legs, sweet cake and fried sweets to yakisoba, yakitori, curry and Turkish ice cream; there is incredible food for everyone to enjoy! At the end of day two, Friendship Festival will finish out with an awe-inspiring twenty-minute display of fireworks featuring hundreds of bursts illuminating the night sky. Don’t miss out on this once-in-alifetime experience, where the bond between Japanese nationals and Americans is not only celebrated, but strengthened. Event date and time are subject to change and/or cancellation. Visit.AirLiftMagazine.com/ friendship-festival for the most up-to-date information regarding Friendship Festival.

very year on 17 October, Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine celebrates its Grand Autumn Festival. The main attraction at this magnificent festival is the grand procession of men dressed in samurai costumes. Grand Autumn Festival serves as the re-enactment of the transfer of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s remains from Kuno-zan Shrine to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, in accordance with Tokugawa Ieyasu’s will. Led by an Omikoshi
(a portable shrine with Ieyasu’s spirit), the samurai procession travels half a mile from the Futarasan Shrine and heads for the Otabisho; a temporary resting place for the portable shrine. The samurai procession consists of hundreds of men dressed as archers with bows and arrows, warriors with spears and calvary. This festival provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals to gain incredible insight into seventeenth century Japan. N
