Practice sessions should have a purpose. The majority of golfers practice only occasionally but even avid amateurs will find that time constraints limit opportunities. Here are some suggestions for practice: • Take the time to make practice swings before every shot. Remember your authentic swing is your practice swing. Trust it. • Make practice swings with your eyes closed to feel balance and where your hands are, what your hands are doing and when. S P O R TS & R E C R E A T I O N
• Visualize a straight line to the target and a straight plane angle between the club shaft and ball.

Three Trips Available!
It seems that stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) came out of nowhere and quickly established itself as one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. Paddle boarding appeals to people of all ages and athletic ability since it’s not too exercise-intensive yet allows users to play outdoors and stay active. Riders feel as if they’re “standing” on water and SUP boards provide the freedom to do just about anything whether that be standing, sitting, headstanding or taking a cool dip in the water. Experience the fad and join ODR on their SUP trip to Tama River. Glide along the strikingly blue water while taking in the serene, mountain foliage. This trip is open to all levels of experience; the guide will teach beginners how to get on the board, paddle and stand. Even the most experienced occasionally lose their balance and fall into the water, so competent swimming ability is required. Water proof shoes and a swimsuit are recommended as participants are likely to get wet. Life vests will be provided and are required to be worn throughout the excursion.

A woman strolls into Taka Uno’s evening Shodo class and reveals what looks like an ancient scroll written in an alien language. But Taka knows exactly what the symbols mean. He quickly reads through the text and informs his avid student the writing is a Buddhist prayer often recited at Japanese funerals. What may look foreign to the average American is “Kanji” — a writing system brought to Japan by the Chinese. Kanji differs from the English alphabet in that each character represents a thing or idea versus a sound. Shodo, similar to English calligraphy, transforms kanji into art. It plays a large role in Japanese culture. Most schools teach shodo and many practice it as a hobby. Prayers are written in shodo and Buddhists consider it meditative, as the concentration required forces the writer to focus on only the writing at hand. Just as handwriting is unique to each person, shodo is unique to each artist. Some combine Japan’s other writing system, hiragana, with kanji while others’ masterpieces resemble drawings more than actual writing. The student artwork displayed in Yokota’s Arts & Crafts classroom demonstrates the unlimited possibilities of shodo. Some simply display the kanji for “river” or “mountain” while another piece portrays a wispy figure flying a kite.
Meaning: Scenic Beauty
Despite its individualistic nature, professional shodo artists spend years perfecting their craft. They use thin paper (“hanshi”), traditional paintbrushes (“fude”), ready-made ink (“bokuju”) and an ink block (“suzuri”). Tradionalists make their own bokuju with an ink stick (“sumi”). A small amount of ink and a few drops of water are poured onto the suzuri. Use too much water and your bokuju becomes too watery; use too little and your bokuju is too thick. Practitioners then use the sumi to gently mix the water and ink.

Meaning: Water
4. 2.
Shodo requires extensive memorization and technique. Each kanji must be written a certain way (stroke order and style are important and specific) and artists have to recall which Japanese character best fits the feeling or idea they wish to portray. Taka Uno’s beginners learn to draw common kanji, like “water” and “mountain.” Repeat students progress to hiragana-kanji mixed styles of writing while advanced students can learn intricate kanji or express more artistry with picture-like shodo. For more information on Arts & Crafts’ upcoming classes, please visit YokotaFSS.com/Arts-Crafts or call 225-7837.ease visit YokotaFSS. com/Arts-Crafts or call 225-7837.

The Yoshida Fire Festival, or “Yoshida no Himatsuri,” is held every year to please the goddess of Mount Fuji and keep the volcano from erupting for another year. Yoshida no Himatsuri also serves as the closing ceremony for Mount Fuji’s climbing season. This lively festival is named one of Japan’s three most unique festivals and has been celebrated for over 500 years. The entire community comes out to watch the burning of large taimatsu torches and the parade of two “omikoshi,” or portable shrines. Class Spotlight Jiu Jitsu
I had to watch my step as I walked into the Natatorium’s classroom. Shoes and backpacks scattered the entrance and parents took up most of the available seating but I found a small spot in the corner to sit. I was there to observe the adult class but came by early enough to catch the tail end of the class for ages nine to fifteen. As the Jiu Jitsu instructors started pairing up the students, my eyes gravitated toward a middle-school boy. “Again?” he cried out when the teacher paired him with a slightly taller girl. I immediately assumed his frustration stemmed from having a female partner but quickly realized my misjudgment when they began sparring. Despite the boy’s best efforts, he was beat again, and again, and again. In between rounds, an instructor would whisper suggestions into the boy’s ear but it was obvious the girl was more experienced and he quickly grew tired. After a few minutes of sparring, the instructor called time. The boy shook her hand and moved on to his next opponent. I was struck by the incident. He shook her hand with zero resentment and zero misgivings. In that moment, I realized everything I’d heard about Jiu Jitsu — how it taught practitioners respect, humility and hard work — was true. Want to improve your fitness and character? Try Jiu Jitsu. The Natatorium and Fitness Center both offer classes. Beginners can expect a welcoming environment and the Natatorium offers a class specifically for adult newbies. Classes typically start with warmup drills unique to martial arts such as break-falls and shrimping. The instructor will then teach a new move and class ends with students practicing their learned moves with each other. For the SFC and Natatorium class schedules, see page 29 and 30 or visit YokotaFSS.com/Natatorium and YokotaFSS.com/ Fitness-Center.
