HINA KATO Date Estimated Return Overseas (DEROS) Manager After graduating from Sophia University in Tokyo, Hina Kato landed her first job at an e-commerce site and eventually gained the experience she needed to become an account manager at a background check company. But when the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake hit Japan, Kato’s life priorities were forever altered. She felt it was time to move closer to family, so she packed up her life, moved to her hometown of Fussa and inadvertently changed the course of her career. Kato now works as Yokota’s DEROS manager where she helps to change tour lengths for active duty members and their families. She thought the job would be a great transition from her human resource background, but found it to be drastically different and

HORIZONS DECEMBER 2020
had to “start from scratch.” Kato consults members about their life plan, and submits DEROS extensions and curtailment requests from members to the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) in Randolph, Texas — a job responsibility that requires a lot of communication and engagement. Kato also handles all the necessary paperwork for dependents who wish to go back to the States or their native country while their sponsor is serving a short tour assignment. She says the most difficult part of her job is clearly explaining the sometimes complex process and requirements to service members and their families. Of course, the difficulties she experiences pale in comparison to the rewards. When Kato is able to make a difference in the lives of the military members she serves, it makes all the hard work worth it.

JAPAN’S WINTER SEASON IS KNOWN FOR ITS MOUNDS OF POWDER-SOFT SNOW AND ENDLESS SNOW RESORTS, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO SPEND ALL YOUR WINTER MONTHS SKIING OR SNOWBOARDING. TAKE A BREAK FROM THE SLOPES AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A VARIETY OF WINTER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR.
NAGANO JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK Observe the wild Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, in their natural habitat at Jigokudani Monkey Park.
Established In 1964, The Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in the valley of Shiga Kogen — an area known for its snowy climate. The monkeys at Jigokudani are best known for escaping the cold by relaxing in the park’s natural hot springs. Rumor has it that the intelligent macaques learned this unique behavior from humans who frequented the baths. These delightful monkeys are extremely social and can be seen cuddling, causing a raucous with family members and playing with siblings. Be careful though, these mischievous monkeys have been known to steal cellphones, handbags and snacks from unsuspecting guests.
ICE WATERFALL WINTER HIKING Winter is the most picturesque season for hiking with almost guaranteed clear skies and snow-capped mountains. Trek through a beautiful winter wonderland as you hike up to a frozen waterfall. Trails are bound to be less busy giving you the opportunity to breathe in the cool winter air and witness unobstructed views of the glistening, snow-covered mountains.

If you’re looking for a beautiful winter getaway, Sapporo is your ideal destination. As the capital of Hokkaido — Japan’s northernmost island — Sapporo offers renowned seafood, unique cultural experiences and city entertainment. But what Sapporo is possibly best known for is their yearly snow festival — one of Japan’s largest winter events. Thousands of tourists from Japan and abroad flock to Sapporo to see the hundreds of intricate and creative snow statues and ice sculptures that line Odori Park, the grounds at Community Dome Tsudome and the main street of Susukino. For seven days in February, these statues and sculptures (both large and small) turn Sapporo into a winter dreamland of crystal-like ice and white snow.
SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL Marvel at intricate statues molded out of snow during this festival.
TUBING & SLEDDING Spend quality time playing in the snow with thrills appropriate for all age groups. With locations just two hours away from Yokota, tubing and sledding offers fun for the entire family. Many resorts offer rental equipment and a designated area for you to slide down the slopes. Some even offer other family-friendly activities like kids’ snow parks, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
WINTER ILLUMINATIONS Get into the holiday spirit while walking through colorful grounds covered by thousands of twinkling, majestic lights.
Although winter illuminations are not exclusive to Japan, the Japanese are known to take their light displays to the next level. Marvel at the beauty of the displays as you immerse yourself in a world of bright lights. Each display offers a unique perspective so you’re guaranteed to stay amazed and entertained.

Walk along the colorful streets densely lined with souvenir shops and a multitude of authentic Chinese restaurants. For a more Chinese cultural experience, visit Chinatown’s two extravagant and colorful temples — Kanteibyo and Ma Zhu Miao. Shop ‘til you drop at Yokohama’s Red Brick Warehouse. Built along the Yokohama waterfront, this big shopping area offers beautiful views of the bay. The two warehouses were once a Customs Inspection Office in the early 1920’s. MAKE SURE LASER-LIGHT DISPLAYS AREN’T AIMED AT THE SKY
LIFE & LEISURE
With the holiday season upon us, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants to make sure your laser-light displays are aimed at your house and not towards the sky. A well-meaning attempt to spread holiday cheer has the potential to create a serious safety risk to pilots and their passengers flying overhead. Each year, the FAA receives reports from pilots being distracted or temporarily blinded by residential laser-light displays. The extremely concentrated beams of laser lights reach much farther than you might realize. Many high-powered lasers can incapacitate pilots trying to fly safely to their destinations. Laser strikes against aircraft continue to increase each year. In 2017, the FAA received 6,754 reports of laser strikes against aircraft — a 250% increase since the FAA started tracking laser strikes in 2010. If FAA off base officials become aware of your laser-light display affecting pilots, they will ask you to adjust them or turn them off. If your laser-light display continues to affect pilots despite FAA warning, you could face a civil penalty. Intentionally aiming a laser at an aircraft is a serious safety risk and violates federal law. FAA.gov/About/Initiatives/Lasers/

CLASS SPOTLIGHT
TAEKWONDO
Taekwondo is one of the oldest self defense martial arts in the world. Participants use their fists, arms, feet and legs in a way that unifies the mind and keeps the peace within a fight. That’s the goal of taekwondo: to have peace, and students are taught this right from the beginning. For Kei Sakakibara, the Natatorium’s taekwondo instructor, taekwondo is a way of life that helps build stamina and gain strength. With over 32 years of professional experience that started with a dream to reach the Olympics, Sakakibara believes the guiding principles of taekwondo — consideration of others, integrity, perseverance, self-control and an indomitable spirit — are the biggest reasons for why a person should consider taking up the sport. It’s clear that these are the lessons Sakakibara’s students are learning. Each student bows as they enter the ring, and he immediately instructs them to run laps around the room. It’s all about discipline, and as each kid finishes, they immediately line up and await his instruction. As he stands in front of them with his cushioned SpiderMan paddles in hand, he firmly yells, “Roundhouse kicks, GO!” One by one the students kick until each has finished 10 rounds. He reminds them of the importance of controlling their kick and making sure they always watch their target. They love yelling the familiar “hi-YA!” with each kick and Sakakibara joins in with them. There is a fun energy about the room, and the smiles on the kids’ faces prove their enjoyment of the sport. Still, it’s clear that discipline is a top priority. He asks them to count with him as each student practices power kicks, but when Sakakibara realizes he is the only one counting, he asks again. Once again, he is the only one to be heard. The unyielding instructor does not ask again, but instead, simply asks his students to drop and give him 10 pushups. They immediately do as they are told without complaint. Sakakibara has taught at the Natatorium for over 10 years. His dream is to inspire students to continue their taekwondo education, and if one of them happens to make it to the Olympics, then his dream will be fulfilled. As they finish up class, he tells them to face the mirror, straighten their uniform, fix their belt and sit with their eyes closed for one solid minute of meditation. Peace between the mind and body — that is the goal of taekwondo.
