SPORTS & RECREATION
URABANDAI THREE-DAY TRIP
Urabandai, the highland area of Mount Bandai, may just be one of Japan’s best kept secrets. Despite its high elevation and ideal snow conditions, Urabandai’s three ski resorts (Grandeco, Nekoma, and Alts Bandai) remain uncrowded. In fact, weekday ski and snowboarders frequently feel as if they have the resort all to themselves. Beginners will appreciate the rookie-friendly runs at Grandeco while advanced riders can enjoy the long, winding black diamond trail. Nekoma offers high-quality powder, a park and mogul runs. Alts Bandai is the biggest of the three extending over multiple mountain ranges. Freestyle riders will stay entertained with the five terrain parks and there’s plenty of trails for the low-key riders. Wind down after a long day of carving at a cozy Japanese lodge. The western-style common area invites guests to gather with friends and take in the stunning views of the neighboring snow-covered lake.

With over 76 years of experience at Charlie T’s combined, the chefs decided the menu needed a facelift. With the support of manager, Martha Rowland, they embarked upon the journey to curate a menu the entire community can enjoy. Charlie T’s has been a Yokota staple for over 22 years, serving good quality food at the right price. The restaurant lives inside the Enlisted Club and offers traditional American flare foods. During the COVID-19 pandemic the restaurant closed and the staff shifted their focus on providing meals for transient military members. The staff found themselves with a lot more free time which afforded them the opportunity to try new chef driven menu ideas.
WEEKLY LUNCH BUFFET:
MON | HEALTHY LEAN
TUE | ASIAN
WED | ALL AMERICAN
THU | SOUTH OF THE BORDER
FRI | ISLANDER
A la carte menu is also available featuring handmade burgers, wraps and salads.
The best sellers remain on the updated breakfast menu alongside new options. The Full Stack offers three fluffy pancakes, bacon, and eggs served with warm syrup. The Golfers Skillet includes eggs, shredded chicken, vegetables, and potatoes covered with melted cheese. The French Toast Plate offers a slightly less sinful meal with its smaller portion size. Charlie T’s offers the convenience of home, being one of the few local restaurants offering traditional american breakfast.
The chefs have a passion for cooking and it shows. The Seafood Linguine is loaded with shrimp and crab meat tossed in a rich creamy sauce. The Vegetable Stir Fry, blends fresh vegetables in a sweet asian blend sauce. The tender Garlic Mussels are sauteed with garlic and butter. The dessert menu was created by Shin, a former pastry chef and the homemade desserts don’t disappoint. Once Ms. Rowland became aware of his experience, she asked that he create the two new desserts featured on the menu.
The Chocolate Banana Mousse Cake is light yet intensely flavorful and the Brownie Delight is an elevated twist on a classic dessert of brownie with ice cream. The team at Charlie T’s vow to keep the menu fresh. They are excited to show more of their skillset and creativity once health precautions are lifted. Ms. Rowland looks forward to introducing the restaurant to new patrons and encouraging the team she describes as “versatile and hard working.” It is their desire, that the menu reflects their passion for cooking.

HORIZONS FEBRUARY 2021
From a distance, spectators strain their necks to gawk at Himeji Castle’s immense size and brilliant white facade. The impressive fortress — also known as “Shirasagi-Jo,” or White Heron Castle — is considered the finest example of a Japanese castle. The estate is one of only three still in original condition, alongside Matsumoto and Kumamoto Castle and recently underwent extensive renovation to restore the stark white color. Explore the massive grounds’ winding alleys to discover well-preserved fortresses and immaculate gardens. Enter the main donjon’s interior and walk up numerous stairs to reach the highest floor to get an upclose look at the intricate roof and an aerial view of the estate.
Then, wander through Kobe, — one of Japan’s most alluring and historical cities. Located between Osaka Bay and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is often described as pleasant and laid back despite the massive skyscrapers and colorful city lights. Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries and was among the first Japanese ports open to foreign trade. Stop by one of the many Kobe beef restaurants to taste the renowned meat in its place of origin. Witness the city’s famous whirlpools that occur in the Naruto Strait during high and low tide when large volumes of water move between the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean — an extraordinary, natural phenomenon you’ll have to see with your own eyes.
