Kagura Ski or Snowboard Two-Day Trips
Ride slopes for days at Kagura. This ski resort’s extensive size and interlacing trails allow riders to glide through high-quality snow without having to wait in as many chairlift lines. Kagura also offers plenty of snow for powder-fiends, moguls for skiers, parks for freestyle junkies and breathtaking views. If that’s not enough, take a ride on Japan’s longest gondola for access to Naeba Ski Resort. After a gratifying day on the slopes, stay the night at Kagura’s lodge. The small hotel is positioned smack dab on the middle of the mountain guaranteeing first access to the slopes the next morning for yet another full day of skiing or snowboarding. This trip is not recommended for beginners as accessing Kagura’s lodge can be a bit tricky. Thankfully, ODR offers plenty of trips for riders of all levels. Take a look at the next page or visit YokotaFSS.com/ODR for more ski-worthy destinations.

Deployments are like a rite of passage in the military — those who stay in long enough will inevitably be picked up for one. Family separations can be tough, but Yokota’s seasoned spouses are here to share their expertise born from experience.
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS What meant the most to Arnie Williams during her husband’s deployments were the small but thoughtful acts TSgt James Williams did before deploying such as writing account passwords on her phone and leaving notes around the house. Karen Graves appreciated waking up to emails from her husband, SMSgt Christopher Graves, even if they were just a sentence or two. In turn, she and her two daughters sent packages filled with little but thoughtful gifts like his favorite candy or something he mentioned he needed like socks.
STAY CONNECTED Long-distance relationships test even the strongest of bonds but fortunately, for most deployments, it’s easy to speak to your spouse via video chat. Talk weekly or daily; whatever works for you and your spouse. Keep in mind, a service member’s location and job can affect how often they can talk. TSgt Kiirstyn Gunterman, whose husband recently got back from deployment, recommends finding out what their deployment will be like before they leave so you know what to expect.
Record or document moments whether that be a trip you went on in Japan or your child’s first steps. One of the memorable gifts Karen sent Chris was a picture book filled with photos taken during his deployment. For those with children, consider gifts that involve the kids. Karen and her two children made a pillow, while Arnie and her daughter decorated the care packages. James sent his daughter a journal so they could write letters to each other. Once the deployment is all said and done, consider surprising your spouse. Karen threw her husband a welcome home surprise party.
LEAN ON YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM
Kiirstyn warns that deployments can be isolating. Her solution? Build a community of friends to fall back on if you need help or emotional support. Join groups on base whether that be a church, book or fitness club. Crystal Weimer also recommends spouses stay in touch with family in the States and consider taking a trip back home.
PREPARE FOR REINTEGRATION
Believe it or not, your spouse’s return home can present its own set of challenges. After doing things on your own for so long, the transition into the old, normal routine can be difficult. Communicate about the reintegration process before your spouse gets home. The Airman & Family Readiness Center offers marriage counseling from licensed professionals as well as a Reintegration Briefing for service members and spouses.
STAY ACTIVE It can be easy to stay at home during the deployment but it’s important to get out of the house and stay busy. Kiirstyn is constantly flipping through Horizons magazine and scrolling through Facebook for activities and events to do in and around base. She describes the Yokota community and Force Support Squadron as unmatched. “It’s just one click or one flip of a magazine and you can find 15 things to do that month.” Crystal frequented parks during her husband’s deployment as her two children both love the outdoors. Her oldest daughter also took dance lessons at the Taiyo. Karen was a frequent visitor of the fitness center while her two daughters took advantage of activities offered on base like soccer, swimming and Youth Center trips.
LAST PIECE OF ADVICE Take things a day at time and remember that it does get better. Deployments do end. On Kiirstyn’s worst days, she took a deep breath and reminded herself, “You can do this. You’ve got this.” You’ve got this Yokota spouses.

Fire Walking F e s t i va l at M t. Ta k a o Sun • 8 Mar Cultural Connection
Each year on the second Sunday of March, the traditional “Hiwatari Matsuri,” or Fire Walking Festival, is performed at the sacred Mount Takao. Hundreds gather to witness Buddhist monks and worshipers pray for longevity and good health. In this heroic festival, one is taken back in time to rituals, chants and fearless acts derived in tradition.
The festival begins with monks chanting as they walk to the base of Mount Takao towards the crowd of awaiting photographers and gawking spectators. Observe weaponry performances such as archery, or watch as monks and worshipers attempt to cleanse themselves of evil spirits by flaying each other with branches dipped in boiling hot water. The main event begins with
the lighting of a traditional bonfire made of fern leaves and wood. Little by little, the fire grows so massive its heat can be felt from over 100 feet away. The flames and smoke are said to burn all impurities away. Monks walk barefoot on the bonfire’s hot coals to cleanse their bodies. Risk-takers in the audience are invited to walk across the sacred coals.

Arts & Crafts’ Woodshop Expert Seiji Kobayashi, fondly known as Kobe, walked into his future job at the age of 10 when a friend introduced him to Yokota’s Arts & Crafts Wood Shop. After years of practice, Kobe attained the position of woodwork instructor. He’s created plenty of useful and impressive woodwork during his ten years working at Arts & Crafts including surround sound speakers and ballpoint pens. Much of his art is hidden in plain sight at Arts & Crafts including a handy storage cabinet in
the Wood Shop and many of the torii gates and woodblocks sold at the Engraving Shop. Interested in woodwork? Stop by Arts & Crafts Front Desk to sign up for their next Woodworking Orientation & Saftey Class for Beginners. After the briefing, Kobe will provide you with a Safety Certification card so you can use the Wood Shop anytime during Arts & Crafts’ normal business hours. Kobe is always there to offer advice or a helping hand.

Need to Know: FAR, AIM & ACS FAR The Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) are rules prescribed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) governing all aviation activities in the United States. A wide variety of activities are regulated, such as aircraft design and maintenance, airline flights, pilot training activities, hot-air ballooning, lighter-than-air aircrafts, man-made structure heights, obstruction lighting and marking. Other regulated activities include model rocket launches, model aircraft operations, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) and even kite flying. The rules are designed to promote safe aviation and protect pilots, flight attendants, passengers and the general public from unnecessary risk.
AIM The Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) is the FAA’s official guide to basic flight information and Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures.
Built on the Practical Test Standards (PTS), the ACS adds aeronautical knowledge and risk management elements needed to support each PTS task. It does not change or lengthen the practical test.
LIFE & LEISURE
This manual is designed to provide the aviation community with basic flight information and ATC procedures for use in the National Airspace System (NAS) of the United States. An international version called the Aeronautical Information Publication contains similar information as well as specific information on international airports for international communities. This manual contains the fundamentals required in order to fly in the United States NAS. It also contains items of interest to pilots such as health and medical facts; factors affecting flight safety; a pilot glossary of terms used in the ATC System; and further information on safety, accident and hazard reporting.
ACS The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) provide a clear, easy-to-use “flight plan” for the material the FAA expects an applicant to know (knowledge), consider (risk management) and do (skill) to qualify for an airman certificate or rating. The ACS provides a single-source set of standards for both the knowledge test and the practical test.

CLASS Spotlight Koto Instrument
The koto’s origin goes as far back as the eighth century when it first appeared in Japanese courts. To this day, the ancient instrument is revered within Japan and holds the title of Japan’s national instrument. Similar to the western harp, the stringed instrument can still be heard in many musical performances and concerts. Its flexible tuning allows musicians to play a wide variety of songs from classic Japanese melodies like “Sakura,” to western classics like “Greensleeves” and even modern pop culture tunes such as Disney songs. Thousands of years after the koto’s creation, Fumiko Tachikawa joined her high school’s koto club and fell in love with the instrument’s deep, resonating sounds. She now teaches the koto to Yokota residents at the Taiyo Community Center. Americans need not be weary of the instrument’s foreign ancestry as Fumiko translates the music scores from kanji into English. She also accepts song requests including western and modern songs. For those looking to learn a new instrument or take a piece of Japanese culture with them wherever they go, stop by the Taiyo’s Front Desk and sign up for a private or group class. For the class schedule and price, see page 31.
