DUSTIN HANEY Supply Technician Dustin Haney was stationed with his family here in Japan for 15 years, and has always felt a strong connection to the military community. Graduating from Yokota High School in 2004, he decided to come back to where it all started. “It’s really weird because I’m an American but Japan has always felt like home.” His career began at United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka, working as a Material Handler for six years. Wanting to advance in his career he decided to move back to Yokota. Mr. Haney has now been working as a Supply Technician for four years. Crunching numbers, processing orders and delivering items to facilities are just some of his daily responsibilities in making sure our warehouse for FSS

runs smoothly. Port and supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges but Mr. Haney and his coworkers make sure that the facilities get their necessary items for day-to-day operations. “I’m kind of the guy that touches a little bit on everything ‒ half of my job would be blue collar, the other half office work.” When Mr. Haney isn’t contributing to Yokota’s mission, he’s enjoying Japan by exploring and enjoying the culture. “ Japan has a little bit of everything, I do a lot of outdoor activities that I love ‒ hiking, snowboarding and being by the water.” Mr. Haney looks forward to continuing to serve the Yokota community while growing his career and immersing himself in Japan for as long as he can.

It’s no secret that mental health, fitness and overall wellness go hand-in-hand, but, taking care of one doesn’t mean taking care of the other. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five adults in the U.S. live with a mental health issue — a statistic that has doubled in recent years due to the pandemic. It can be challenging to practice healthy mental and physical health strategies. Which is why we asked FSS instructors and personal trainers how they handle mental and physical health while promoting overall wellness, not only for themselves but their clients.
“The most important characteristic a person needs to achieve their wellness goals is consistency — being motivated to get that workout in.’’ said Rachel Harris, a personal trainer at the Samurai Fitness Center. The first step in starting a healthy habit is changing your mindset and adapting the discipline needed to make your changes habits. Wellness is motivating yourself to move your body and make healthier choices. Crissy Saalborn, a yoga instructor at the Fitness Center understands that mental and physical health have an immediate connection. “The importance of movement in the body — whether it’s walking, biking or swimming — It’ll have a positive impact on your mental health.” Taking care of your mental and physical health can seem scary and overwhelming but setting small, attainable goals makes it easier to create a routine and gain confidence to keep going on your journey. “Take it day by day, give yourself grace and go easy on yourself — it takes 14 days to make a new habit and even longer to see changes when starting that habit” said Rachael Weist PT, DPT., a fitness instructor at the Natatorium. It’s important to understand when making any lifestyle changes that failure often comes before success. So whether you’re making steps to better your mental health or starting physical activity, know that the journey is just as important as the destination.

The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel is the world’s largest underground flood water diversion facility. Located in the Saitama prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo, this underground infrastructure consists of 5 silos, a tunnel and a water storage tank. Each silo is 213 feet deep and has a diameter of 105 feet. It was designed to protect the city of Tokyo from flooding caused by heavy rainfall and typhoons. The water is then stored in the water tank or “underground temple” and discarded into the Edogawa river. Take this trip down under and see the massive pillars inside and the construction that took 17 years to finish.
