A Home Away from Home The Kanto Lodge serves as many guests’ first and last stop at Yokota Air Base. Lodging Manager Jose Lobo, fondly known as Joe, is aware of the Kanto’s responsibility and works hard to ensure guests leave Yokota Air Base with positive experiences and zero misgivings. Joe conceives the Kanto as a home away from home for his guests and the newly renovated rooms certainly feel like a warm apartment. The 6-month-long renovations were extensive – replacements included everything not permanently attached to the room. Kanto Lodge guests will notice new kitchen furnishings from the full-size fridge to the stovetop oven and four-person table. The living room invites guests to relax with a comfortable, family-sized sofa and flat-screen TV; and when work is required, there's a quaint office desk. The bedrooms have also been fitted with new beds and drapes. But it’s the little things that make the biggest differences: kitchen utensils, warm paint colors, new linens and great customer service.
8
horizons March 2019
The Kanto deals with a rapid check-in and out rate due to the incoming and outgoing Yokota residents and visitors. Yokota’s Terminal serves as the main hub for passengers traveling to other Pacific bases, increasing the traffic volume. The Kanto Lodge also plays an important role during evacuations in response to natural disasters. Just last October when Okinawa was hit by a typhoon, Joe was given 24-hours notice before Okinawan residents were hastily sent to the Kanto. But Joe doesn’t break a sweat. In fact, he can often be seen smiling at the challenges thrown his way as he promenades through the hallways, interacting with staff and customers with a big grin on his face. Joe works hard to ensure visitors leave Yokota with a grin as big as his.

Slopes, Snow Monkeys & Brewskis Sat–Sun • 16–17 Mar
Slopes 18 resorts consolidated to create Shiga Kogen — a skier’s paradise in the Japanese mountains. Shiga Kogen is the largest resort in Japan with over 51 lifts and 176 runs. Glide over some of the best snow Japan has to offer thanks to the mountain’s high elevation. So revered, these slopes were the site of the 1998 Olympics. New to skiing or snowboarding? Shiga Kogen has plenty of beginners courses and Outdoor Recreation offers free lessons.

SPORTS & RECREATION
Snow Monkeys Take a break from the slopes to visit wild Japanese snow monkeys in their natural habitat at Jigokudani Monkey Park, located downslope from Shiga Kogen. Rumor has it that on a wintery day, a troop of macaques spotted humans sitting in a hot spring and decided to follow suit. Now, guests come to the hot springs to watch the snow monkeys take a break from the cold in the warm waters. These delightful monkeys are extremely social and can often be seen cuddling, causing a raucous with family members and playing with siblings. They’re highly intelligent, and
interact with their environment as a human child might. Be careful though — these mischievous monkeys have been known to steal cellphones, handbags and snacks from unsuspecting guests.
Brewskis The fun doesn’t stop once the sun goes down. Try over 100 Japanese craft beers at Shiga Kogen’s renowned beer festival, Snow Monkey Beer Live. Dance the night away to live performances from accomplished DJs and bands and meet visitors from all over the world.

Just past the bustle of Tokyo you’ll find Tama Hills — a quiet, recreational area where street sounds and city views are traded for bird chirps and scenic routes. Take in all Tama has to offer during the upcoming spring season. Hike or mountain bike through Tama’s trails. Earthy paths are tucked well within Tama, far away from Highway 41, providing for a hike with zero traffic noise and plenty of soothing nature sounds. Trees flourish along the scenic routes — especially during the spring and fall months when they come alive with color. The shortest trail extends a quarter mile, while more adventurous trail blazers can connect the paths for a 4-mile hike. Mountain bikers will appreciate the challenging hills. Those new to mountain biking can stop by Tama’s Outdoor Recreation Center to rent a bike and pick up a map.
Take in Tama’s sights and sounds on horseback. Take your riding further with lessons or bring your children to Tama for a pony or trail ride. Horse lovers will jump for joy at the opportunity to hop in the saddle and even those new to riding can enjoy a relaxing trail ride. Tama’s horses are extremely well trained and knowledgeable with most being over the age of 10 — an experienced yet prime age for horses. The instructors are also experienced having ridden and shown for years.
Kick your adrenaline up a notch at Tamattack Paintball. Cocooned between two hiking trails, Tama’s paintball field provides a woodsy environment for enthusiasts. To keep things interesting, Tamattack also has inflatable bunkers of all sizes. Join in on Tama’s monthly games or call Tama Recreation to schedule a private game with friends, family or coworkers.
And that’s not all Tama has to offer. Golf, basketball, tennis and even archery. No matter what you choose to do outside, bets are Tama has it.

HIMEJI CASTLE & KOB E C I T Y Sat–Sun • 6–7 Apr Cultural Connection
From a distance, spectators strain their necks to gawk at Himeji Castle’s immense size and brilliant white facade. The impressive fortress — also known as “Shirasagi-Jo,” or White Heron Castle — is considered the finest example of a Japanese castle. The estate is one of only three still in original condition, alongside Matsumoto and Kumamoto Castle, and recently underwent extensive renovation to restore the stark white color. Explore the massive grounds’ winding alleys to discover well-preserved fortresses and immaculate gardens. Enter the main donjon’s interior and walk up numerous stairs to reach the highest floor to get an up-close look at the intricate roof and an aerial view of the estate.
Then, wander through Kobe — one of Japan’s most alluring and historical cities. Located between Osaka Bay and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is often described as pleasant and laid back despite the massive skyscrapers and colorful city lights. Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries and was among the first Japanese ports open to foreign trade. Stop by one of the many Kobe beef restaurants to taste the renowned meat in its place of origin. Witness the city’s famous whirlpools that occur in the Naruto Strait during high and low tide when large volumes of water move between the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean — an extraordinary, natural phenomenon you’ll have to see with your own eyes.
