SSGT. JOSEPH SZAFRANSKI Installation Mortuary Technician/ Unit Deployment Manager SSgt. Joseph Szafranski has been stationed at Yokota Air Base for almost two years. Prior to coming to Yokota, he was stationed at Aviano in Italy and then Kusan in South Korea. Here at Yokota SSgt. Szafranski works as a Installation Mortuary Technician and a Unit Deployment Manager. His daily responsibilities vary with his two positions. When he’s working at Mortuary, they consist of contacting different agencies here at Yokota and the family of the fallen member. He makes sure the family knows their benefits, entitlements and that their wants and needs are met during this difficult time. Working in a mortuary can be challenging, “It’s sometimes difficult knowing your boundaries – I care

about people but when it comes to a mortuary case you can only do so much and still be professional”. But SSgt. Szafranski knows it’s worth it when the fallen member’s family appreciate all things you do to get the member back home to them. When he’s not working at mortuary SSgt. Szafranski is a Unit Deployment Manager. Another important job for the Force Support Squadron. He works with the active duty members of FSS on all deployment training and makes sure they’re ready to support the mission when deploying or going TDY. When SSgt. Szafranski isn’t supporting the FSS mission, he’s traveling Japan, playing his guitar or producing his own music. His future goals include finishing his bachelor’s degree and hopefully one day getting into Officer Training School. SSgt. Szafranski looks forward to continuing to serve the Yokota community through Mortuary Affairs and Unit Deployment.

SHINGEN-KO SAMURAI FESTIVAL SAT • 9 APR

Every year the city of Kofu holds a festival that celebrates the legacy of Takeda Shingen, the feudal lord of present day Kofu. Shingen-ko, the biggest event in the Yamanashi prefecture takes place over three days every year on the weekend before April 12th, the anniversary of Takeda Shingen’s death. The highlight of the festival is the “Koshu Battalion Deployment”, a reenactment of about 1,600 armored samurais and 24 commanders led by a famous actor portraying Takeda Shingen down the streets of Kofu. Takeda Shingen was an exceptional military strategist, and was admired by his followers and rivals. His cavalry was said to have been the strongest in the 16th century Sengoku Period. This period was known as the “Age of Warring States”, a very turbulent and violent time for Japan as rivaling warlords fought for control. Experience a festival that was deemed by Guinness World Records as the largest samurai gathering in the world and commemorate the life a warrior who’s still celebrated half a millennium later.

From March to April, you can catch a glance of the beautiful yet fleeting cherry blossoms. Known as “Sakura” in Japan, these delicate pink flowers can be viewed throughout the region, but only for a short period of time. Once they bloom they can be viewed for about two weeks. Every season, people flock to streets, parks and festivals to catch a glimpse. Dating back centuries the origin can be traced to before feudal Japan, with folklore
