MISAO AIKAWA-STEWART Personnel Technician Misao Aikawa-Stewart has supported the mission at Yokota for over 23 years. Before working for Civilian Personnel, she worked at Tama and Finance. Now as a Personnel Technician she overseas US appropriated funds employees allowances. Her job overseeing allowances is an important aspect in the mission, “I like to make sure the employee can get paid those allowances on time – the process can be very complicated.” Mrs. Aikawa-Stewart knows it can be hard making sure employees get paid on time and correctly, but she works her hardest to make sure that civilian employees are getting all the help for supporting the mission here at Yokota. She has enjoyed working and serving the military community, and now after over 23 years Mrs. Aikawa-Stewart is saying farewell to her FSS

family, “I’ve enjoyed my other positions and gaining the experience and knowledge was helpful for this position.” Leaving a familiar place behind is hard, especially when it’s been a home for so long. “I’ve been so pleased to have been able to work with wonderful people at Yokota – It’s so sad to leave Japan and for people stationed here in Japan it’s such a beautiful country.” But new places means new adventures and Mrs. Aikawa-Stewart is looking forward to hers. Goodbyes are never easy but we thank you for your service to the Yokota community and to the 374th Force Support Squadron.

The celebration of joy and the bond of companionship are only a couple things that have been missed without the renowned Friendship Festival. The Yokota Air Base is thrilled and honored for the tradition to continue this year. Yokota last held the festival back in 2019, but due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the event was canceled for the past two consecutive years. This makes the 2022 Friendship Festival even more special. The festival not only symbolizes the bilateral alliance between the United States and Japan. But, the opportunity for both nationalities to get together and learn about each other’s cultures. Every year that the festival takes place, the gates open and a crowd of visitors is visible from miles away. In 2019 over 135,000 people attended the event and this year it is expected that more than 15,000 more visitors will participate in this open gate festival. The event takes place in the heart of Yokota, the flight line. Participants can appreciate the military aircrafts lined along the flight line and have the opportunity to take a closer look inside the planes. The

curiosity and enthusiasm makes this area the most picturesque section of the festival. The fun doesn’t end here, attendees can relish live presentations, participate in carnival games and interactive activities allowing everyone to connect to form long-lasting relationships. The fun is equally divided into two days, allowing a more significant number of people to enjoy the festivities. 54 private organizations along with 19 offbase vendors will be selling food and souvenirs for everyone to experience. Savor different flavors ranging from American cuisine, such as hot dogs, funnel cakes, turkey legs, as well as traditional Japanese eats like yakisoba, yakitori, and takoyaki among others. The flight line will be filled with activities for everyone to enjoy, not to mention 36 entertainment acts will be taking place on two stages over both days. All the squadrons on base come together to make this event possible, covering over 33,600 square feet of space with activities, entertainment, and great eats.
The 374th Force Support Squadron plays a significant role in executing this event, the largest event hosted on base, attracting thousands of people every year. The Force Support Squadron organizes private organizations’ booths and entertainment to fill this vendor space and ensure that the event lineup runs smoothly. Their goal is to assure that there is always something available for everyone to enjoy, making the experience something that everyone in attendance can remember for years to come. Ten FSS facilities including, Vehicle Operations, Arts & Crafts, the Pet Care Center, Tomodachi Lanes and others will be present at the festival providing various services. FSS employees are excited to participate once again in the Friendship Festival. “I am looking forward to the first time in three years, being able to invite our counter parts from off base, on base, so we can host them. Welcome them into our space and just be good hosts as we interact with them. It’s a great opportunity and I’m glad that the wing is pressing forward and allowing us to do this,” Vehicle Operations manager Andrew Litchfield said.
To wrap up the iconic celebration, 1,500 fireworks will be launched Sunday at 8:20 p.m., illuminating the sky above the flight line and starting the countdown for next year’s Friendship Festival. Save the date for 21–22 May to participate in this special celebration where our bond with Japanese nationals gains strength. We know that despite the language barrier and cultural differences, we have one thing in common, we understand each other with a kind, friendly smile. Photos courtesy of 374 AW/PA
